DEAREST SHARQAWIS, There is something reassuring about Ramadan. No matter how things change and evolve over the course of our lives, for better or worse, we can count on Ramadan to bring us back to our center. This holy month is a reminder for us of all the things that truly matter in life: faith, family, community, and, underneath it all, ourselves. While Ramadan provides the comfort of traditions that stretch back for generations, those traditions ultimately exist to help us reflect on our personal actions. Fasting and prayer help us reflect on our spiritual growth and relationship with Allah. Gathering around the table for iftar with family and friends allows us to reflect on how much these people truly mean to us, and how much we have put into maintaining and developing our relationships with them. Volunteering helps us reflect on our place within our community and what we have done – or can do – to contribute to its growth and evolution.

Arabian Woman Fashion Expo Days of Glitz and Glam It’s not every day that we get to experience a well-put, perfectly organized, and neatly executed fashion event. But this is what Touches Events managed to achieve hosting the Arabian Woman Fashion Expo, held at Moda Mall from 28-31 March, under the patronage of Shaikha Hessa Khalifa Al Khalifa. Attracting local, Khaleeji, and international businesses and fashion designers is what made the Arabian Woman Fashion Expo a memorable event,
simply for having a diverse environment, in all the beauty that it brings. We were instantly mesmerized by the different brands that were being showcased, from kaftans and jallabiyas, to beautiful abayas and jewelry. The expo allowed attendees to interact and meet with designers and business founders themselves, which in turn allowed them to learn more about the designers and their latest collections, adding

WHO’S WHO
The Importance of
BEING NAJEEB The father, the writer, the philanthropist By Noura Al Joaib
18 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MAY 2018
Najeeb Al Zamil is one of the most recognized names in the Gulf. He is a prolific writer, whose work can be found in newspaper columns, books, and even social media. He is one of the most influential figures in volunteering, having established the Saudi Volunteer Work Organization – one of the largest associations in volunteerism. Oh, and he is also a former member of the Shoura Council. But, that is not how I first came to know of him.
his only daughter, Noura. How, then, did I come to read a father’s personal letters to his daughter? He had published them online, that’s how. That might seem unusual, but Najeeb Al Zamil is anything but usual. In these letters, Najeeb passes on to his daughter advice and wisdom that, in his words, “are the truest and most honest expressions of love, because a father’s words to his daughter can’t be anything but honest and true.” In these letters, he also expresses his hopes that his daughter will live a life true to herself, a life full of happiness, and a life where wisdom and thought are her guiding principles. He augments these wishes with literary and historical allegories and precedents, rolemodeling how one can learn to live a happy and full life by learning from the experiences of others, wherever and whenever they come from. These letters, which never fail to bring tears to my eyes, are but one aspect of the man that is Najeeb Al Zamil.
I was first introduced to this extremely well-read, articulate, and opinionated man via his letters to his daughter. I had not met Najeeb Al Zamil before this point, and neither had I ever interacted with
During my talk with Najeeb, I asked him why he chose to create the Saudi Volunteer Work Organization. Instead of answering my question, he redefined for me the meaning of volunteerism in perhaps the most eloquent and insightful manner possible: he explained to me that volunteerism must be self-driven, must influence a community positively, and must be done with no desire or expectation of return or reward,
be it financial, emotional, or otherwise. By that definition, many mandatory community service programs run by organizations are not truly volunteering efforts; they are public service efforts, which he sees as excellent, but do not reflect true volunteerism. This distinction is important as volunteerism is a critical aspect of social and cultural development that must be cultivated in addition to other social development efforts. This is necessary to create a stronger sense of community and a society with individuals who appreciate the value of selflessness on their personal growth. I asked Najeeb Al Zamil why he chooses to write. His response was one that I was unprepared for, yet highlighted to me what makes him more than just a writer: “You write because of something inside yourself that you can’t control. Writing is an answer to a need much greater than yourself. You do not choose to write, you are compelled to.” It is a response that will stay with me for a long time, and one that I will continue to reflect on, being a writer myself. His answer also brought to mind a quote by Oscar Wilde, a writer whom Najeeb admires greatly: “Yes, I am a dreamer. For a dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world.” You too, are a dreamer Mr. Najeeb Al Zamil, and we are lucky to have you. LAUGHING TOGETHER Director Abdulkhaliq Al Ghanem, and how comedy made us better. By Noura Al Joaib
STAFF PHOTO/ABDULRAHMAN AL BINALI
Whenever I see a bottle of Vimto shelved in a supermarket at any odd month, or smell the aroma of freshly fried samboosa, or notice lanterns lining an otherwise dark window, I instantly become nostalgic for the holy month of Ramadan.
20 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MAY 2018
Ramadan, has, and will always be, my favorite month. I don’t know if it’s the humane side of humans that surfaces exponentially, the sounds of Quran recitation lingering in the air, or the desire now acute for the company of our loved ones, (or maybe it’s all three and much more) the month is special in more ways than one. Another stimulus that is sure to bring in the nostalgia full force is the Ramadan advertisement breaks on MBC with the accompanying Ramadanthemed melody. The moment MBC starts using the melodic segment a few weeks before the month begins, you are instantly reminded of nights spent with family and friends gathered around a TV following the unfolding of a favorite show airing that month. I for one never follow a show on TV any other month. But during Ramadan, it’s almost a given, as it is in many households across the Middle East. It is in this shared practice that a community, for lack of a better word, is built. And there in no community of shared viewership as popular and integral to the month quite like any person who recalls the consecutive evenings spent in front of a television set waiting for Tash Ma Tash to begin. Tash Ma Tash was one of the longest running Saudi shows, airing in 1993. It ran for 18 years, during which its satirical representation of Saudi life served as one of the most honest and controversial
social commentaries on Saudi society. More than simply a television show, Tash Ma Tash became the platform through which a dialogue could be started on Saudi social issues; once Tash Ma Tash had publicly discussed a topic, the doors were opened to others to further engage in social debate; all of this before the advent of social media, when the avenues for social discourse were more limited and more tightly regulated. Yet Tash Ma Tash consistently braved a variety of social issues, entertaining while, at the same time, encouraging critical thinking and a holistic perspective to these issues. I recently had the privilege to sit with none other than Abdulkhaliq Al Ghanem, director of Tash Ma Tash for 12 of its 18 seasons. In his beret with a neatly trimmed moustache and beard, Al Ghanem spoke eloquently and confidently of his time as director of this iconic show that helped define Ramadan for a generation. Iraqi by birth and formally trained in filmography, Al Ghanem articulated fondly the strong relationship between himself as director, the writers of the show, and its legendary actors. “It starts with the script,” he tells me. “I had a dedicated landline in my house for the long conversations I would have with the script writers. You see, a well-scripted scenario is the first step to success.” He also spoke about the challenges they faced in producing Tash Ma Tash: from DESTINATIONKSA.COM 21
social backlash to the casting of female actresses on a Saudiproduced television show. Conversely, Al Ghanem also spoke of the strong support the production team received from various government agencies and individuals to continue with their work. Tash Ma Tash was as much a vehicle for social development as it was a medium of entertainment. The esteemed director also took some time to speak about the art itself, and how he and the production team crafted entertaining comedy for almost two decades. As he described to me, comedy is hard. It’s easy to have someone fall and get a laugh out of that. It’s quite different to be able to take a complex subject, like marriage, death, or illness, and be able to get your audience to laugh about it, maintain the gravity of the subject matter, and keep them engaged for the duration
of an episode. It’s even more challenging to have them walk away and still think about that episode and its subject matter. It takes great writing, great actors, and a director whose job is to put it all together and make it work. When I asked him what the role of the director was, specifically, he explained: “Have you ever heard someone tell a good joke badly? A director’s job is to make sure that a good joke gets told well. That’s what we do. We take good writing, good actors, and make sure they deliver a great performance. You can get away with mediocre actors. However, for a good performance, you must have a good director.” With a deep understanding and love of his craft, I was sure that Al Ghanem must be working on something just over the horizon. I was happy to hear
Al Ghanem going over the script with actor Abdullah Al Sadhan
Al Ghanem during Tash Ma Tash’s earlier years
that he is currently working on a feature film which will be a historical drama, and a passion project of his. He does not yet have a title or release date for the film but “it’s a love story,” he tells me, “a love story in a time where romance was out of place but can’t be denied. It’s also a tribute to our culture. The culture of the Khaleej and the industries of the sea.” Although Tash Ma Tash is no longer a fixture in our Ramadan schedules, its impact is everlasting. The Holy Month of Ramadan has always been a time of prayer and reflection. Al Ghanem reminds us that shows like Tash Ma Tash helped us realize that reflecting on our society is just as important as reflecting on our own spiritual growth. May your Ramadan be full of love, family, growth, and lots and lots of laughter.

these in your soup is definitely acceptable, if not recommended.
A typical Najdi iftar starts with gahwa and some Kholas or Sukkari dates. Qassimis in particular take pride in their dates, making sure there’s enough stocked for family, neighbors, and friends.
No Ramadan table is complete without a variety of drinks. Orange juice and Vimto are prepared in large jugs. Each plate would have a glass of laban and water, and lest we forget, a finjan of freshly brewed gahwa. Ramadan nights consist of lots of visits between relatives. Both young and old dress in their jallabiyas and thobes – wardrobe staples during the Holy Month of Ramadan.
Once the fast has ended, families enjoy a bowl of Quaker soup made with heartwarming spices and mutton. A tray of assorted fatayer (bread and pastries usually stuffed with cheese, olives, and zaatar) is served side by side samboosa stuffed with cheese, meat, chicken, or potatoes. Dipping
While nowadays, Riyadhis prefer to keep their iftar light, some Najdi matriarchs may still prepare a main dish of rice and protein or macaroni. Kabsa, Ghorsan, and Margoog are local favorites.
The long nights are spent playing games, sitting with the elders, and yes, watching about a dozen seasonappropriate soap operas on TV.

Before the adhan starts, three main drinks are present: Zamzam water, gahwa, and laban, all curated to complement the taste of your dates, usually Ajwa or Sukkari, with a tiny dip of tahini sauce or cream on the side. After everyone breaks their fast, there is a silence as they make duaa, and then you can hear the rush of time. Little by little, the tunnel vision expands to different dishes – samboosa stuffed with ground beef, farmooza, ta’mea with tamarind dip, fool scented with bakhoor. There on the edge sits a whisk of wheat soup, hab (grain) soup, or the deliciously sweet aroma of shoshbrak soup. In between the dishes are the salads
– green, fatoosh, or taboola. When you step away, the table sparkles with its lavish colorfulness, so effortlessly expanding you forget all the hard work that went into it. Of course somewhere on the table are some of our favorite Ramadan drinks – Vimto, Tang, Sobya, Tamarind and Gamar El Deen. After the main course, the family gathers, prays Maghreb, then they sit and chat, drink green or black tea, play games like Karom. Then we enjoy some sweet desserts including tatlti, konafa, mohalabeya, debyaza, labanyah, and almasya – all ingredients of a delicious Ramadan.

They say the heart of one’s home is its kitchen. The reason, I’m sure, isn’t because it’s where all the food is. No. It’s the heart because kitchens are usually where people sit around a table and break bread. What is it about sharing a meal at a table that brings people closer to one another? It’s where families talk about their day, where people share good news,
do “more with less”, families are rarely getting the chance to sit around a table, together, at once. But not during Ramadan. I've always loved and looked forward to the month. It has embodied what I love and care for the most: reflection, acts of kindness, meals shared with loved ones, reaching out and reaching in, seeking those
closest and dearest, a sense of belonging, festivities, purpose. At the call of Maghreb, everyone gathers to break fast, passing around dates and glasses of water. Smiles and prayers exchange, as the kids run around a little longer before everyone gathers at the table; a table with an almost gravitational pull as dishes
line up and aromas fill the air. A Sharqawi table reflects our culture – inclusive and diverse. You would typically find balaleet, jareesh, oats soup, thareed, sago, and of course, the month’s returning star, Vimto. These dishes, and much more, whether local or native to neighboring regions, are part of what makes Ramadan a memorable experience. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 29

Khaleeji Lovin’ Traditional never goes out of style. No matter how much we love our burgers and sushi, we can’t deny the irresistibility of traditional Khaleeji cuisine. Yes, we cannot go without our mashkhool and thareed. And do bring on the balaleet. Previously, one would have to rely on good home-cooking for our beloved cuisine. Not anymore. More and more restaurants are popping up that are serving these local classics with flair. But what we absolutely love is the atmosphere in many of these restaurants, the ambiance. Here are a few of our favorite spots to hit when the cravings kick and you’d like to indulge in a different experience.
BAIZ
This restaurant is perfect for those who love a little Khaleeji humor with a modern twist. Poppin’ bright colors, kitchenware used creatively and artistically, and popular sayings and expressions adorning backs of chairs are but a few of what patrons will enjoy and come to love at quirky Baize.

Qaisariyat Al Waha is located in one of the oldest malls in Sharqiya. It has been able to attract patrons since its opening for its relaxed authentic vibe, good traditional selection of food and beverages, and a surrounding décor that depicts deep Khaleeji heritage that is beloved by those who frequent the restaurant/café. It’s usually quiet but gets very busy during Ramadan, so make sure you go early if you’re looking for a place for sohour! ISTIKANA
Much like Baize, this spot is a delight with its artwork and vivid colors. It’s the perfect hangout spot and especially for unwinding tea time. It’s small, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in character. We love the artwork adorning the walls; a take on pop art, Khaleeji-style. Totally Instagram-worthy. We also love the creativity, particularly when it comes to their spin on desserts, re-engineered with a little traditional flair. Saffron cheesecake? Yes, please. This is the place to go to during the long Ramadan nights with a group of friends. Location: Makkah Al Mukarramah St., Ulaya Dist., Khobar estikanahksa
Madina (Arabic for Our Past) is a local favorite. It isn’t merely a restaurant; it has, along the years, become a tourist attraction. Its diverselydecorated rooms depict interiors and styles from different regions, making it both fun and a semi-learning experience with every visit. We recommend this place for big groups as their rooms accommodate big numbers, when needed. Be sure to try their best-seller: The Dammami Kabsa. Delicious! Location: Yarmouk St., Khobar khobarvillage

MADINA
OAH YA MAL
This rather big establishment provides indoor and outdoor seating (perfect for long Ramadan nights when the weather is cool), with private dining rooms. Overhead lightbulbs are strung across the courtyard, much like how old Khaleeji homes used to light their own private courtyards at night. The arches all around give the place an almost majestic feel, a total throwback to simpler yet majestic times. In the courtyard, you’ll find a throwback store, full of quintessential Khaleeji items for sale. As for the menu, it is brimming with old-time favorites. Make sure to order their Harees, you wouldn't want to miss it! Location: King Faisal Rd., As Sadafah, Dammam oah_ya_mal
MUGALAT AL FAREEJ This spot is for anyone with a penchant for good ol’ Khaleeji dining in an atmosphere that is authentic with catch phrases and colloquial expressions founds everywhere. Mugalat Al Fareej became instantly popular, since its opening, with diners returning for both the wide range of mouthwatering dishes and the comfortable, almost home-like atmosphere. Their traditional breakfast spread is how great days start off. Follow their Instagram account for fun quizzes and their latest updates. Arab Fashion Week: It’s Our Time
Adding to this year’s many firsts, Arab Fashion Week introduces Riyadh as an up and coming fashion capital.
By Nora Al Eisa
AFWR ran for three days, with the most noteworthy highlights being Dubai-based Saudi designer Arwa Albanawi, Lebanese eveningwear designer Basil Soda, and the Fashion Star Arabia winner, Saudi designer Arwa Alammari of Aram Designs.
Launched by the Arab Fashion Council, which recently opened an office in Riyadh, Arab Fashion Week Riyadh (AFWR) goes hand in hand with Saudi’s Vision 2030 in boosting the creative economy. 44 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MAY 2018
According to AFC’s honorary president, Princess Noura bint Faisal, “One of our goals is to nurture and develop creative talent in Saudi, and create a platform trusted by both local and international designers.”
About the inspiration behind her latest collection, Arwa Al Banawi said, “It alludes to the idea that culture wins. This collection was really inspired by the culture of Saudi Arabia. We incorporated the gold bisht embroidery and sadu fabric, and there were also fabrics that were very symbolic to the western world, like the tweed checkered fabric, which is very London inspired. I mixed east and west to highlight the contemporary modern Saudi woman; she’s a traveler, she’s educated, she’s smart, and she’s the future.”
also no shortage of support from some of our favorite fashion savvy influencers, such as Lama Alakeel, Tamara Algabbani, Sausan Alkadi, Soha Nowailaty, Noha Nabeel, and Hala Alharithy, who was actually part of the AFC team, as someone in charge of several tasks, ranging from the management of workshops at the Harvey Nichols pop-up to influencer presence.
Harvey Nichols did a popup tent showcasing Saudi designers, our favorites being Nora Alshaikh and Reema Alshubaily. It was also the venue for a number of workshops, our favorite being Lillian Ismail’s workshop on Art Jewelry, or as she likes to call it “anti-jewelry”.
On our way to the Gala Dinner, I caught up with AFC ambassador Rafeea Alhajsi, who said, “It was so nice seeing the Saudi girls backstage working passionately and really giving it their all. From the organizers, to hairstylists, makeup artists, and the volunteers! Without Arab Fashion Riyadh we wouldn’t have been able to witness their talents and abilities.”
The next AFWR is scheduled for next October. We’re excited to see how they plan to elevate the event. We’d love to see more local street wear designers on-board, since luxury street style is a proven crowd favorite. It would be great to include men from the industry. They are strong contributors to the ecosystem and can benefit from this platform, too. There is also good reason to revisit the ticket prices, making the show accessible to individuals keen to benefit from the experience. At the end of the day, AFWR has set a milestone in the capital. It signals a new era in Saudi Arabia and made the Kingdom part of the global conversation.
Arab Fashion Week Riyadh proved to be a great platform not just for Saudi designers but for behind the scenes talents as well. It felt like a historic step towards creating a fashion ecosystem in Saudi Arabia by diversifying jobs available in the fashion industry. Whether it’s Saudis with years of industry experience or young students wanting to break into fashion, the atmosphere was that of eagerness to help and build each other up. The Holy Month is upon us. This is the time of year when we go on spiritual journeys and enjoy the company of our loved ones, may it be over iftar with family or spending long Ramadan nights with friends. Something else we experience in Ramadan? The shift in clothing and style. When we think Ramadan fashion, we usually think traditional jallabiyas; they are timeless, and no one can ever deny that. Yet slowly but surely, to meet our fast-paced lives while also keeping up with current fashion trends, we are opting to choose pieces from designers who are redefining classic jallabiyas. Presenting us with elegant and delicate masterpieces. We are also adding our own twists onto our outfits. Take a casual outfit for example, and add a turban to it, (because turbans are so 2018). Saudi Cultural Days A Whole-istic glimpse into the Kingdom’s creative communities. As part of its charge to promote and nurture the Saudi arts and creative talent, the General Cultural Authority organized the first international Saudi Cultural Days. The latter is an international program that brought the Kingdom’s heritage as well as leading Saudi cultural influencers and artists in three major capitals: London, New York, and Paris. The cultural caravan gave guests the opportunity to experience a variety of interactive exhibits, tailor58 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MAY 2018
made for each of its pit stops. It was led and tied together by the Whole-istic exhibition of Saudi contemporary and modern art curated by Aya Alireza. Whole-istic provided a glimpse into a wide variety of creative genres, including film screenings, music performances, art and photography exhibitions, and a virtual reality experience. A highlight of the exhibition is the inclusion of King Abdul Aziz Library’s unique
collection of historical photographs that document the status of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia prior to modernization.
Saudi Arabia has a rich cultural heritage – it's a story that is deeply rooted within a vibrant past and is an impactful force for an incredibly exciting future. Our aim is to open visitors' eyes to the diverse culture of Saudi Arabia and to provide a more complete image of what makes Saudi Arabia the country it is today. — Ahmed Almaziad, CEO of GCA
During the exhibition, film screenings shed light on the young talented filmmakers in the Kingdom, including the
award-winning “The Bliss of Being No One,” as well as “A Colorful Life,” a documentary about the empowerment of women, produced by GCA. Al-Qatt Al-Asiri is considered one of Saudi Arabia’s most renowned traditional crafts, it is an age-old art practice espoused by the female community of Asir to decorate the interior walls of their homes using colorful painting
techniques, specifically rooms for hosting guests. The art enhances social bonding and solidarity within the female community, and its continued application in most households ensures its survival. Observation and practice are the key methods for transmitting knowledge, technique and skills for AlQatt. In 2017, it was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 59
NEW YORK
Held at the Allouche Gallery on Gansevoort Street, New York Saudi Cultural Days offered a unique repertoire of activities that showcased the Kingdom’s creative diversity and heritage. One of the highlights was a panel moderated by Raneen Bukhari, who runs the art gallery Desert Designs in Sharqiya. It examined the role of social media in cultural exchange. Basmah Felemban, a graduate of the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts in London, hosted a Q&A exploring the themes of selfexpression through street art in Saudi. The exhibition showcased a range of musical performances by Saudi students studying in the US.

Paris Saudi Cultural Days was held under the patronage of the Minister of Culture and Information and Chairman of the Board of Directors of GCA, Dr. Awwad Bin Saleh Al-Awwad, at the Palais De Tokyo in Paris. The panel discussions on film creation, women empowerment, Social media and Cultural Exchange, and art, brought some of the brightest Saudis together on-stage. “Very few places in the world celebrate and value culture and arts like France,” said Minister of Culture and Information and Chairman of the Board of GCA, Dr. Awwad Bin Saleh Al-Awwad at the opening ceremony. “Learning about culture is like receiving a gift, and it is our commitment to
preserve and build upon this gift. As Chairman of GCA, our goal is to enhance and support a creative society and showcase our history and contemporary Saudi culture and the arts both at home and abroad. In this spirit of artistic diplomacy, we open Saudi Cultural Days at Palais de Tokyo and look forward to welcoming and engaging with Parisian visitors.”

HABITAT OF PEACE
A real community within a community that came to life Destination was eager to see what happened with the sustainable, award winning development, Diyar Al Salam. We were looking forward to seeing the challenging dream become a reality, transforming to a real masterpiece in the heart of Jeddah and built with a focus that caters to the professionals in our community. It is proof that it is possible to achieve what the people need and that there is no more room for overpromising or bad quality in the market. As you approach the building, you see the simplicity of the doves on the elevations and a well-defined entrance that ignites your sense of curiosity and joy. As you begin to enter the building you feel drawn in with a sense of both grandeur
and tranquility and as you enter the lobby you are overcome with a sense of belonging. You are greeted with a smile from a receptionist who guides visitors. In addition, the waiting areas in the lobby provide space for owners to come and greet their guests. We were shown two different units, the first of which was the three-bedroom apartment. It was a spacious apartment, well designed, demonstrating superior quality and we couldn’t help but gravitate in as the amazing amount of natural light filled the space. As you walk in you will find the salon on your left, followed by an open living and dining room that has the aura of a happy family. On your right you will find the imported and fully fitted Italian kitchens

with all the appliances already installed. It was also fitted with all of the other equipment designed and made according to the requirements and international standards. It was a well thought of plan which encompasses all what is needed to bring families comfort and peace of mind in their homes. We felt an overwhelming sense of appreciation in regards to what is currently offered in the market. One thing that blew us away was the fact there was this mechanism of sliding walls and it is applied in both the typical apartments and the penthouse. The sliding walls are used to segment the house and provide flexibility, as in they open or close off the kitchen, separate both the guest and living areas, or open or close off the bedroom areas from the rest of the living spaces, to cater to the local cultural needs. The housekeeper’s room is well positioned within the unit and from the living room there is a spacious hallway that leads to the bedrooms. As we walked through the master bedroom and into the master bathroom, we were amazed by the attention to detail in the design, including the treated non-slip floors, to the skirting details. The penthouse is a spectacular five bedroom two level sky villa. The first level includes the salon, main living and dining space, kitchen, a guest room that doubles as a second master bedroom, the housekeeper's room, and a study space. The second level contains four bedrooms including a spacious master
suite and a secondary living area. Outside, the penthouse boasts an expansive terrace, including an outdoor dining area which overlooks the reflection pool, a courtyard that is zoned into different levels to be utilized for different purposes, and a private swimming pool. Most importantly, there are very high walls which provide privacy while you are swimming and enjoying the outdoors. They also have an expansive sky garden with an area of around 2,000 square meters which is a community hub called The Level, which provides residents access to the
lounges, two fully equipped Health Clubs for males and females, a multipurpose room (The Club Room), which the residents can use as a space to host gatherings and celebrate their occasions, a day care and a library- all overlooking the sky garden’s centerpiece, an outdoor reflection pool. It is a vibrant, beautiful space to look at and experience. So if you are looking for a home and you are looking for a better living experience, get in touch with them for a tour! Halla Bint Khalid
how, as a little girl, art became her respite and allowed her to see the world in vibrant colors.
A morning with beloved fine artist, children’s book author, illustrator, and designer, Halla Bint Khalid
“At the age of ten, I stumbled upon my father’s paint-box. It brought me out of the darkness of timetables and Arabic grammar, and into the light and beauty of the world around me.”
Riyadh’s Story Weaver & Creative Pioneer By Jou Pabalate
For over three decades, Halla Bint Khalid has had a love affair with the arts and the magic of stories. She is a pioneer Saudi artist, and a luminary in the field of children’s literature. One who is driven by her passion to create, she continuously develops her craft, keen on elevating the design scene with her works that take you playfully into the heart of the Kingdom and its people.
64 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MAY 2018
Halla is a natural storyteller, having an innate ability to find the simple joys and nuggets of wisdom out of everyday moments and life experiences. Perhaps it’s this gift to effortlessly weave words and invoke vivid images that makes her books delightful and insightful all at the same time.
Ten years later, Halla surfaced onto Riyadh’s art scene with her first solo exhibition. At a young age, she became one of the first Saudi female fine artists to showcase her paintings both locally and internationally.
As we conversed over marmite toasts and coffee, Halla shared
While she did take time away from her canvases to start and
focus on her own family, her creative spirit would take her into the world of children’s literature, as an author and illustrator. She produced her first two titles in 1997, under her own publishing house. She would draw inspiration from her everyday adventures as a mother to five wonderful children (Saud, Moothi, Tanah, Khalid, and Leen). “Each book is a manifestation of a conversation, a teachable moment, or an anecdote I’ve witnessed from my kids. Hiccups for example is a book I wrote about fearless Leen and her brother, Khalid. Everywhere was my way of teaching Tanah why it’s not a good idea to sip water from a fish tank. They are the characters in most of my books, a fact that still makes my children blush,” Halla shares with a light laughter.
Since then, Halla Bint Khalid has continued to write in both Arabic and English, illustrate, and design her own books for children. Each of her work takes an average of two years to complete. In April 2017, she managed to cross into the international scene, when her book One Hundred was published in Barcelona, in both Spanish and Catalan.
Always keen to broaden her horizon and contribute to the creative community of Saudi Arabia, Halla ventured into the world of design. Partly inspired by her love of museum stores, she set out to create stationeries and merchandise that capture the Kingdom’s identity and diversity. “I started dabbling in design a couple of years ago, and last year, I launched a new company called Halla’s Designs. It’s a joy for me to create different collections
inspired by my culture and it fills a gap in the market. People are looking for products that showcase the beauty of our heritage, which they can keep or share with others.” The Camel Series created by Halla drew positive reviews during its showcase at Saudi Design Week 2017. She is also developing quality stationery that are inspired by petroglyphs, Arabic proverbs, and the like. Halla Bint Khalid’s journey is not marked by choosing a road less travelled in the past, but one wherein she had to blaze her own path. Through her imagination and talent, generations are able to find themselves in the pages of her books, and provide others with a glimpse of the Kingdom’s heritage and traditions. BOOST YOUR WELLNESS WITH @MIDDLEEATS How do you stay motivated? By Yasmeen Al Haj
The core of the issue is not that we can’t stay motivated, because that is inevitable. It’s that we rely on motivation
When you consciously decide to make a change, at first you’re excited and energetic about it. Soon, that motivation

disappears and you start to procrastinate like it’s your job. So then how do you accomplish long-term goals and lifestyle changes? There is a secret no one’s telling you: if you want to accomplish something, you must be disciplined – motivation will let you down. A successful person does what needs to be done to get a certain outcome, whether

to keep us committed. You can spend hours on Pinterest searching for motivational quotes, and while “Remember why you started” is good advice to spark that energy every now and then, sometimes it just doesn’t cut it. You’ll need something more solid to rely on.

themselves. In these times, I think to myself: I will get up and complete this task to the best of my ability, simply because I want to practice discipline. My advice to you is this: decide what your goal is, pinpoint the steps you need to reach that goal, and switch your focus from trying to be motivated at all times, to being disciplined. Let go of the belief that you must be motivated to get work done.
Discipline is the secret to commitment and consistency, because you’re not always going to feel like doing it.
they feel like doing it or not. That person knows that you’re simply not always going to feel like it, and waiting for that motivation will just delay you in reaching your goals. I get asked this question about motivation whenever someone hears that I’ve lost a significant amount of weight. I wish I could tell you that I’ve mastered the art of waking up every day enlightened by the idea of doing countless circuits
of burpees. Nope. The truth is, losing a significant amount of weight and keep it off, just like accomplishing any long-term goal, requires discipline. As much as I enjoy staying active and staying healthy, there are days I stare in contemplation at my running shoes for 10 minutes before actually putting them on. There are days I wished my bell peppers would chop
You’re not always going to feel like doing your laundry, or studying for that midterm. You’re not always going to feel like emptying the sink every night before going to bed. Some days you’ll wake up and dread going to the gym, or even be at the gym and want to leave just before your warm-up has ended. Yeah, we’ve all been there, and at some point, we’ll all probably be there again. In all cases, do what needs to be done – one baby step at a time. 70 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MAY 2018
Nothing beats the sweet smell of the sea and the sand beneath your toes as the scorching sun unknowingly tans every exposed part of your skin. Monaco offers the best of the three. A principality that enjoys over 300 days of sunshine makes it the best destination for a business stay or for a tourist-y holiday. A microstate that holds the soul of Monaco, France, an Italy makes it the ideal place to discover. A big plus is the easy access it possesses; a short distance of 30 minutes from Nice, Côte d’Azur airport and an even shorter 7-minute ride by helicopter, the Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer Resort is where we had the pleasure of being invited to. The Monte-Carlo 4 SBM resort houses different hotels, but our trip mainly focuses on Hotel Hermitage and a couple of the monuments that are the pride of this famous location.

A namethat packs history behind it, the hotel is called legendary and not for nothing. Upon entering the lobby, our eye automatically drifted to the glass dome that illuminates the reception area as the sun rays hits the glass, bathing the lobby in a sense of calmness. The luxury does not stop there.

The beautifully decorated room overlooked the marina where a glance outside gives view of the yachts docked on the water. Each room and suite at the hotel has its own special design, with artwork and decorations to complement it. With high ceilings and arches everywhere, the hotel is a modern day palace. What is largely known as the center of attention, the Belle Époque dining room is the jewel of the hotel; its intricate ceiling is the work of French painter, Gabriel Ferrier. The hotel is also home to Michelin Stat
restaurant, La Vista Mar, where dinner could only be described as a gastronomic experience with the dessert, the reigning champion of the night. We also got the pleasure of trying out Cryotherapy at the Thermes Marins MonteCarlo. Cryotherapy uses cold chambers that go down to almost freezing temperatures for therapeutic purposes, the 3 minutes spent there was more than enough before moving on to other treatments at the spa.

With so many restaurants to try from, we headed over to Buddha Bar, an Asian Fusion restaurant. Expecting excellence from what we have previously experienced, we were not disappointed. Every aspect was perfectly executed; the food, design and music made the perfect meal.

The luxuriousness of MonteCarlo is evident in every aspect of the principality, and that includes prominent monuments like the Casino and the Opera Monte-Carlo. From classical architecture to the internal grandiose interior of the buildings; gold embellishments and velvet furniture, the design speaks volumes about the luxurious life of Monaco. A trip like no other, the 4-day getaway was the perfect way to sit back, put our feet up, an enjoy all that the hotel and Monaco had to offer. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 73

DUBAI ART SEASON Where culture and art collide
Self-expression comes in many forms, the most famous being art. Dubai, being a melting pot of cultures, is adamant to not let its cultural imprint be forgotten. For the past two months, Dubai has been in the midst of holding the 5th edition of Dubai Art Season; a series of cultural events to highlight the Emirati creative landscape; the events, hosted under the patronage of her highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed, are held throughout the duration of March and April of 2018. 76 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MAY 2018
Starting out with the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature, the event is one of the largest gatherings of like-minded book enthusiasts in the Arab World. From March 1, an incredible number of authors and visitors gathered under a roof to join workshops, attend panels, and participate in competitions. This year, the festival celebrated its 10th anniversary. To commemorate the milestone, a book was put together. For the Love of Words is a book that features the most influential voices that
DESTINATIONKSA.COM 77
participated in the festival over the last 10 years from the likes of Jacqueline Wilson, Anthony Horowitz, Mohammed Al Murr and Victoria Hislop. Following the Literature Festival, the festivities continued with Art Week, headlined by Sikka Art Fair. Sikka is known for being the platform of the contemporary artist, situated in the heart of Dubai, at al Fahidi historical neighborhood. What set this year’s Sikka Art Fair apart is the heavy presence of Saudi Arabia in their midst. By order of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed of the collaboration of the United Arab Emirates and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in many fields, art being one of them, ‘Saudi House’ was erected at the Sikka to showcase the talent of over 20 creative Saudis in calligraphy, pottery, art and photography. Of the names that made us proud of their accomplishments were Sara Maiman; who showcased her work in the ‘Majlis Area’, ‘Photography Room’ by Khlood Alkhaldi, Moath Alofi, and Abdulrahman Aldgelbi, ‘Calligraphy & Graffiti Room’ by Ayman Alhafith, Maha Al Ghanmi and Maryam Abushal and much more. Participating in the Dubai Art Season was the Van Gogh Alive – The Experience; an exhibition which has been touring the world, that showcases some of Van Gogh’s most famous work. With a soundtrack to accompany the acclaimed artist’s artwork, the exhibition really was as promised, an experience. 78 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MAY 2018
As we all know, the word art does not fall under one form; music is also a big part of that, which is clearly shown in the hosting of the World Doctor’s Orchestra at the Dubai Opera, where doctors put down their tools and pick up a musical instrument for a one night only charity concert. Other events include the Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Awards, the Middle East Film and Comic Con, the ING Creative festival, and World Art Dubai; where you can experience art and should you love it so much, even take it home. There is nothing that brings people together like shared experience of the appreciation of beauty.
WHERE TO STAY? AL BANDAR ROTANA With two connecting towers located on Baniyas Road and in close range to major attractions, Al Bandar Rotana and Al Bandar Ajraan, are contributing to Dubai’s growing tourism business by providing properties to support the numbers coming into Dubai.
