FROM THE EDITOR
And so the adventure begins here. Our third edition has been yet another exhilarating experience in discovering Sharqiya with the excitement of a tourist and the pride of a native – two juxtaposing feelings we aim to encourage in all the residents of this province – natives, expats and visitors alike. Each of our editions aims to bring out a new side of Sharqiya and this time we bring to you all the people who keep this city active: from golfers and bikers to cyclists and tour guides. We hope they will inspire you, as they did us, to push for your goals with perseverance, integrity and passion. We are proud to be featuring Sharqawis who are creating a balanced life in the city and inspiring others to do the same. We hope you will be taking advantage of the start of spring: dining outdoors on the weekends and taking your fitness routines outside, enjoying the breeze while you take a jog or heading out for a relaxing stroll – you can never have too much fresh air. At Destination, aside from being the ultimate city guide, we aspire to be a lot of things for our readers: a timeless record of all things beautiful, a source of inspiration and the silver lining on a dreary day – we’re here to remind you every single day your life, your city and your home are beautiful in the utmost way.

BUSINESS
FINANCIAL PLANNING WITH REEM ASAAD
START NOW
SO LET’S GET STARTED: STEP I: CREATE A TABLE Create a table with the following items in two separate columns:
INCOME
Any income stream that will continue throughout your life (retirement benefits, property rental, bonds, dividends). Divide that figure by 12.
EXPENSES
- Estimate of the amount of money you need after exiting the job market and/or ending your career on a monthly basis. - Other needs and wants on a monthly basis (travel, medical, other). - Emergency needs.
Part one of the how-to series. You may not know the right tools used for it, so you just shelve off the thought till time is due. Well, the interesting news is that you
are probably overdue, in planning and implementing that is. And since it’s never too late, let me give you a few pointers.
Generally, financial planning depends on three key legs:
SAVING
Building
INVESTING Growing
Any sound Personal Finance plan depends on these three pillars. If this helps, think of it as a solidly built tripod; the stronger and leaner,
12 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2016
RETIRING Relaxing
the better the outcome. Note that saving and retiring are more directly related since retirement requires an early start.
STEP 2: MULTIPLY YOUR EXPENSES BY 12 - Deduct that number from the monthly income figure. - If the result is positive, then you are in a relatively safe zone. If not -which is mostly the case, due to inflation and unexpected life eventsthen please think it over thoroughly. Do not wait till it’s too late. A Guide to Using
SOCIAL MEDIA
for Your Business Thinking of expanding your horizons? Social media might be the answer. By Lama Alem
POST
CHOOSE
Social media allows direct interactionwith customers; ask for feedback without overpromoting yourself; focus on conversation and visibility, not sales. Take the constructive criticism, and ignore the “hate.
EXPLORE
Familiarize yourself with the various social media platforms. Understanding their function and uses is the first step to finding the most suitable platform.
STAFF ILLUSTRATION/SUZAN ALQUASMI
Keep in mind WHY you want to use social media; to promote, to get feedback, etc., and pick the platform that best serves your objectives.
Giving people an inside look, behindthe-scenes footage and special promotions makes them feel special. Pick the optimum posting time.
INTERACT
14 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2016
PLAN
Schedule when and what you post. Organization creates a bigger picture of the brand and helps you stay consistent.
Tips to Remember
• You do not need an account on every social media platform. •Some platforms require more time and effort than others. • Stay on top of your game.
ANALYZE
Many social media platforms offer statistics and profile activity analysis. This comes in handy with your marketing strategy development. Discover your popular posts, peak response times, average customer age, etc.
•Trial and error is key; that’s how you learn what works and what doesn’t. • People love images, so use them! Infographics and short videos depict your ideas in minimal time. • Facebook and Twitter offer customercentered polls. • Use these statistics to evaluate your own performance too.
REVISE
Before sharing posts, check your spelling and grammar. For visual posts: Remember quality over quantity. Lastly, ask yourself: Does it serve its purpose and fit with your brand image?
WHY SOCIAL MEDIA? • Reach a wider number of customers. • Gather customer feedback. • Be accessible to customers and media outlets.

It is considered a social group more than a biker’s club since its members have actively participated in many charitable events in Sharqiya. Every Ramadan the group has been volunteering to hand out Iftar meals at traffic lights. They also joined in a Eid ceremony for senior citizens at the Prince Sultan Rehabilitation Complex in Dammam, participated in the Arab Orphan Day, Traffic Safety Week, as well as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

Founded in April 2012, Adnan Alkendi started Sharqiyah Bikers as a social initiative to take on youths from the streets and change the stigma that is usually associated with bikers. By the beginning of 2013 it became a part of the Saudi Arabia Motor Federation.
The group is seeking to promote that motorcycles are not dangerous, as long as all the safety precautions are followed. Alkendi stresses that “Safety First is their key value. One of their most recent regional activities was a first of its kind 7-day 4,500 kilometer rally across the Gulf countries. The trip started in Kuwait, passed through Bahrain, Saudi, Qatar and ended in Oman, which coincided with celebrations of the Omani National Day. Alkendi was ecstatic with how things went, saying that it was a huge success and that members of other groups in every location joined them on the trip. Adnan Alkendi

Did you know that Jubail has its own cycling club? A volunteer group established it back in 2002 for the pure love of cycling and with a simple mission to promote it to everyone. The Jubail Cycling Club (JCC) currently has more than 50 members of all nationalities and they meet every week for group bicycle rides.
We had a quick chat with Norman Vidal, JCC Activities and Events Coordinator, about this active group.
Who is the target audience for JCC?
JCC welcomes any and all cyclists above the age of 18, regardless of their level of experience.

Do you offer coached training sessions? What are some of the activities and services you do in JCC?
We like to do weekly club rides and annual races. We also enjoy providing community support services annually on Earth Day where we get people together to clean up the trash at Jubail Beach. In fact, we loved it so much that we are
planning to do such cleanups quarterly throughout the Jubail area.
Is the JCC sponsored commercially?
We tried it in the past, but now we have a monthly financial contribution system through which the members sustain the club and its needs. It helps
We’re still a small operation and the majority of our members already have a lot of years of experience in bike riding, so we don’t offer coached training at this time. SAUDI TEE TIME
We hit the fairways with Saudi golfer, Othman Almulla. By Mona Sabr
This is actually one of my favorite stories. I grew up like any other Saudi teen, having love for one sport: soccer. I’d play any chance I could get, to the point that I was training on AlNahda Football Club’s under-16 team. Unfortunately, my grades took a small hit and that was the end of that for my parents. I was told that I could enjoy my summers any way that I wanted but I could
20 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2016
no longer play soccer. So I decided to try something new and joined some of my expat friends in Saudi Aramco to play the sport that would shape my life thereafter: golf.
What kind of training does golf involve?
Well, the beautiful thing about golf is that it caters to everyone interested in playing, from the beginner who can only enjoy it during the weekends, to the elite player that wants to push
STAFF PHOTOALZAHRA ALDAWOOD
How did you first get started with golfing?
at the prize ceremony they played the Saudi national anthem and raised the Saudi flag. There is nothing more fulfilling than representing my country and it’s such an honor to achieve results that become a part of Saudi’s history.
Favorite golf course? Oh that would have to be the Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia. Definitely.
What keeps you motivated?
Generally I have short-term and long-term goals that keep me going. But my main motivation is my family; having them join me for tournaments and travel around the world with me keeps me focused and puts me in the right environment to achieve my goals. their own games to the farthest reaches. The latter would be a more intense program of golf training, 5-6 times a week for hours at a time. Although golf isn't the most physical game, flexibility and core training can only help improve your game.
Who are your team members?
The Saudi National Golf Team has six players that represent the first team: Khaled Attieh, Ali Alsakha, Fahad AlMansour,
Omar Hariri, Saud Alsharif and myself.
What is your most memorable golfing moment?
Golf has been very good to me and I’ve had lots of memorable moments. But if I had to choose one it would have to be when I won the Red Sea Pan Arab individual championship in Egypt. It was the first time a Saudi had won the tournament, and after receiving the trophy
What advice would you give to young Saudis interested in learning to play? Go out and try the game! Golf has a lot of misconceptions in the region, especially the stereotype of being an old or rich person’s game. Through my own experience, I believe that golf is a true reflection of life. The game teaches you patience and strength and a strong sense of belief in yourself. Web: ksagolf.com

MOHAMMED NAIF
The Super Car Enthusiast
By Jou Pabalate
Since the beginning, Mohammed Naif, 26, has always been fascinated with cars. Unlike most boys however, he carried and nurtured his passion for automotive ingenuity all the way through, eventually making Saudi history by creating the very first Super Car event in Riyadh. Naif wanted to create a community of fellow enthusiasts who share the same love of the motoring world; a 26 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2016
task which at first would seem rather difficult considering the private nature of super car owners in the city. However, this did not deter Naif. On his last year at Al Faisal University, he decided to organize the first Cars and Coffee event, with Shell as the official sponsor. Cars and Coffee is one of the most famous auto meet ups happening in different cities around the world, where enthusiasts gather
to show their most prized machines and build a sense of camaraderie among owners.
What makes Cars and Coffee a bit different in KSA though is the level of exclusivity it now entails. It has also given birth to Superior Automotive, a company founded by Naif, that aims to create events for super car enthusiasts, including crosscity and country road trips and visits to the best auto factories in the world.

One such visit was to the McLaren headquarters, Naif’s favorite brand. At some point, he wanted to be a professional racer and even took international courses towards a career in F1 racing. While he has changed his direction, he remains enthralled by the experience of being behind the wheel and on the road. “I don’t consider myself a collector; I’m an automotive enthusiast. I don’t buy a car to have it in the garage
and have it driven only once a year. I respect the science, the engineering behind the machine. I want to ride it, to experience its power.” Off the road, Naif also has a room of die-cast collectibles, (miniature versions that are exact replicas of their real-life counterparts). This collection alone speaks volumes of how enthusiasts take their hobbies as a way of life—it is also telling of Naif’s love of innovation and ingenuity. Apart from being a gearhead, Naif is deeply involved in fostering advanced technology in the Kingdom. He worked for three years at Aramco and wants to create an impact in the
area of solar and renewable energy. He has also managed to bring a new advanced security system to Saudi Arabia, which he states is the first of many entrepreneurial endeavors he wishes to pursue.
Superior Automotive is set to attempt another feat soon, with a project called “Stampede,” a digital media show that will focus on the super car lifestyle, while at the same time showing a different side of Saudi Arabia to the world. superiorautomotiveblog superiorauto

Get Your Glow Back
with these Oils Face oils: look younger, feel younger By Zareen Muzaffar
Face oils are not restricted to those suffering from extremely dry skin. It’s one of the best ways to get supple skin and the highly coveted dewy look. Whether you go for grapeseed, coconut, jojoba, argan or almond oil; keep in mind that they vary in texture and richness. Test and trial, and inspect results.
Clarins Face Treatment Oil
Editor's Pick!
Clarins offers three kinds of face oils: lotus (combination to oily skin), blue orchid (normal skin) and santal (very dry skin). Use according to your skin type, as these rebalancing oils are made from pure plant extracts.
L’Occitane Immortelle Divine Youth Oil Interestingly, the Divine collection is formulated with Corsican Immortelle; the everlasting flower that never fades, even after it has been picked. Initially, I thought it’s just a marketing angle, but this oil does leave your skin feeling soft and it’s said to have antiaging properties as well.
40 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2016
Bobbi Brown Extra Face Oil With a very calming fragrance, it moisturizes and softens the skin. A blend of Vitamin E, sesame, sweet almond, olive and jojoba oil. Apply before makeup for a soft base or before bed. For normal to dry skin.
Dior Instant Gentle Cleansing Oil
Jojoba Oil Excellent for sensitive skin, jojoba oil acts as a natural barrier to environmental allergens. Due to its antimicrobial properties, it helps to slow the growth of bacterial and fungal microbes. Get your hands on a bottle from healthcare stores or an apothecarist.
Dior hasn’t come out with an independent line of face oils yet, but this oil promises thorough makeup removal. A great option if you don’t want to use makeup removing pads or tissues that can leave the skin overly dry post-cleansing.
Estee Lauder Nutritious Radiant Vitality Essence Oil This oil can’t be used by itself, especially if you have dry skin. Use a few drops along with your moisturizer for an added skin boost. It is heavily fragranced, but if you don’t mind the scent, go for it.

Using the Right Makeup Tools
“Makeup is meant to magnify existing beauty.” By Zareen Muzaffar
There are skeptics who don’t believe in using makeup tools. After all, two fingers can help you apply foundation just as effectively as any brush can. Then came the Beauty Blender and scores of other brushes that we
eventually started giving a chance. After a recent meeting with a highly talented and popular makeup artist in Toronto, I have reaffirmed that these makeup application tools are must-haves.
MAC’s Masterclass Oval 6 Brush
All you need for flawless foundation application. To all makeup users, it is ideal for cream foundations; this brush can also be used for liquid foundations. Tap the head of the brush onto the cream foundation and glide it on the face in a downward motion to create the perfect base.
Beauty Blender
Fan Brush Fan brushes are excellent for a sheer touch of blush or bronzer. They help create a softer look instead of the chiseled one. This brush is also good for applying powder foundations or shimmers.
42 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2016
This small, hugely popular sponge helps you apply foundation for sheer coverage or buildable full coverage. Sephora came out with their own version, which is actually cheaper.
Editor's Pick!
Eyelash Curler Taking just a few seconds, such a simple step can accentuate your eyes. This works wonders on light eyelashes, and mascara application will further bring out your eye color.
Cotton Swabs Essential for last minute cleaning around the eyes or lips when your makeup runs or smudges. Use to perfect your makeup or simply to clean any excess.
Sigma brushes and Real Technique brushes are available at Whites Pharmacy. whites_ pharmacy
Eyeshadow Brush
Angled Brow Brush
MAC and Sigma’s E55 is your best option when it comes to finding effective and easyto-use eye shading brushes. Blending doesn’t seem like a chore if the brush is good and easy to use.
Sigma Beauty’s angled brow brush in E75 is one of the most popular brow brushes out there. It fills up any gaps and helps create the perfect arch. It can be used with powder or gel products.

together we can elevate the quality of the food in the marketplace.
I sat down the other day with Wejdan Ismail who, along with Sinan Khatib, owns and runs a delightful burrito place in Bahrain called Burrito Loco. They opened their most recent branch in Khobar November last year.
How did you get into the food industry?
I used to work in the banking industry, but I was really frustrated and felt I wasn’t doing enough. Khatib asked for my help with a project, so I took the opportunity and 48 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2016
we opened up a cafe called Bite Me in one of the museums in Riyadh. I was there for a year before we felt the call to do something new and decided to move and open a place in Bahrain.
What’s your vision with your business?
Two words: fast and fresh. Khatib and I want to make good food at a reasonable price and show our customers that by simply investing in fresh, quality ingredients, they can taste the difference, and
I was there from 10 - 1 a.m. every day for about six months, getting everything running, tackling any challenges that came up, working alongside our staff and just putting in the time and effort. It was tough, but it was so satisfying to see what we built come together like that. The key to our success has been by keeping our investments really low and putting our money into good ingredients and good workforce. We can punch things out very quickly.

How was the experience of starting up your restaurant?
Don’t be lazy. You have to get your hands dirty and do the work. No one else is going to make money for you. — Wejdan Ismail
We moved to Bahrain in July 2014, found our first location in August and opened in November. We made back our investment in three months, found the location for our Hamala branch in February last year and opened it in May purely from the profits. We then started on the Khobar branch in August and opened it last November.
Any lessons learned for other aspiring restaurateurs?
Don’t be lazy. You have to get your hands dirty and do the work. No one else is going to make money for you. Also, keep your overhead low. It’s easy to solve problems by throwing money at it, but it’s so much more satisfying to be DESTINATIONKSA.COM

smart and make every Riyal make sense. It’s your money on the line; fight for it. Early on, I bought a menu board from someone and negotiated and thought it went well. Recently I was thinking about the individual parts of the board, including the cost of wood, the paint and design and I realized, “why was it that expensive?” That’s called paying an ignorance premium. I don’t have that anymore.
You know how musicians can’t listen to music anymore without critiquing and studying it? Do you find yourself analyzing every place you eat at? (She laughs knowingly) I can’t go to restaurants normally anymore. All I see is their lighting, tables, chairs and even staircases. I’ve actually been kicked out of places because I’d try and measure their staircases surreptitiously! But, you just keep judging 50 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2016

and adopting different ideas and learning what works and what doesn’t.
Was there a moment when you realized: Wow, I’m really doing this?
Two moments actually. When this one customer came three times a day and I noticed that this place became something real for other people. I realized that this no longer belongs to me; it’s for the public. Second, when it dawned on me that we were giving 20 people a livelihood that feeds them and their families. A year ago there was nothing and now I’m directly responsible for all of them.
So what’s next for you? We just opened Noodle Box, where you choose raw
ingredients that we wok up then and there as rice or noodle dishes. As always, with the same vision of fresh, fast and quality food. We hope to add more locations of both it and Burrito Loco in the future.
Finally, do these burritos make you go loco? Or are the burritos themselves insane?
Hah, you figure it out when you see them. They’re so big it’s crazy. I did in fact go after the interview to have one and it was crazy big and crazy delicious. Loco indeed. Vitamin D3
Supplements Aimed at Combating Deficiency The sun is now in your hands.
DO SOMETHING!
The Prevalent Problem
According to a research carried out by King Saud University, vitamin D deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency in the world. Although Saudi Arabia is one of the sunniest countries, vitamin D deficiency has been a predominant problem among the population.
ALARMING STATS
What Vitamin D Does
Biologically, vitamin D basically helps make healthy bones. It also aids the body to fight infections and protect itself against the development of different types of cancer including colorectal cancer and breast cancer.
How is it Made?
Vitamin D3 is specifically made within the skin through the exposure of ultraviolet light B of the sun, or from specific food intake such as eggs, liver, fishy oils, fortified milk and cereals. 56 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2016 ADVERTORIAL
A study that was carried out in November 2009 on medical students in Dammam, showed
100 %
deficiency in the vitamin D level. A study carried out in 2015 showed that
84 %
of Saudi women had the deficiency due to lack of sunlight exposure during the day. This shows that the shortage of both sufficient protein food intake and sunlight can create a deficiency that is only solvable through supplements.
• Take vitamin D test. • Consult your doctor or pharmacist. • Learn about the different dosage forms of Vitamin D.
Stay healthy and get some sun! A dose of sunlight in a capsule.

Surviving Your First Workout Class You can do it! Just follow these tips. So you’ve decided you want to join a group workout class instead of your normal routines, but you are a bit nervous on how the class will be and whether or not you would be able to catch up with the rest? Well there’s nothing to be nervous about, we’ve all been there. Here are some tips to help you ease through your first couple of classes.
Most importantly don’t quit.
RESEARCH
First of all take some time to research a bit about the class. For example, the class is boot camp. Find out the fitness level required to enter the class, ask the gym/ instructor if it’s a private training center, ask for more info on what types of boot camps they are running; will it include weights, is it outdoors, etc. Knowing what you are getting yourself into will help you feel more at ease.
GO EARLY
Be there before the scheduled time. This will give you time to speak to the instructor and introduce yourself; also you can mention any difficulties or injuries you have or ask them any questions. Going early can also give you a chance to mingle and ask other members their thoughts of the class.
58 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2016
DON’T COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHERS!
A general rule of advice would be to not compare yourself to anyone else. If you feel that you have overworked yourself or are really tired, do not look at the person next to you and try to compete. If you need a break then give yourself a break, you are just getting started.
Force yourself to keep going and be committed and you will start seeing results with time. But First… CAFFEINE Caffeine-free treats to fuel and sustain you. To all coffee lovers out there who need a morning dose of coffee to function, did you know you can actually replace that caffeine with different food combinations that still give you the energy you need for your day? According to Ashley Koff, RD, a dietitian
in Washington DC, “Our energy crisis and subsequent reliance on caffeine actually has a lot to do with our nutrition.” After working with thousands of patients, she concluded that energy is a result of the type of nutrients you eat, and not from caffeine.
HERE ARE FIVE DIFFERENT FOOD COMBINATIONS THAT CAN HELP YOU BEAT THAT AFTERNOON SLUMP.
Cinnamon Apple Almonds
Cacao Banana Nut Butter
62 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2016
Bananas are a great source of healthy carbs and potassium; important for hydration, thus an energy booster. The nut butter is a healthy combo of fat and protein, and the cacao gives you that chocolatey flavor.

Apples are known to be quick energy fixes because of their natural carbs and sugar. Cinnamon can be sprinkled to stabilize blood sugar, and almonds (healthy fat) which will prolong your satisfaction and make you fuller.

Eggs are rich in protein. Combined with the healthy carbs from spinach and berries, with good fat (avocado), this combo will definitely give you a lasting gush of energy.
Berries ½ Avocado Eggs Spinach
Nuts Broccoli Leaf Hummus
3 Whole Wheat Peanut Butter Ginger
Tortillas are a healthy carb which sustain energy, in addition to the healthy combo of fat and protein from the nut butter. Ginger can be added as a heating spice.

Hummus is a good source of healthy carbs and protein; the veggies will give you additional energy and the nuts will give you the satisfying serving of healthy fats.

UNLOCKING THE ELIXIR OF A LONGER LIFE Junk food saves time. Healthy food gives you time. Did you know that changing your lifestyle can add more than 10 years to your life expectancy? A few years ago, a National Geographic project identified five places with populations with the highest life expectancy: Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Loma Linda, California; Ikaria, Greece and Nicoya, Costa Rica. The diet and lifestyle patterns of these populations were extensively researched and consequently found to be among the healthiest diets: low in calories and rich in antioxidants, fibers, omega 3, 6 polyunsaturated acids, polyphenols and flavonoids.
Recommendations The Mediterranean Diet and the Okinawa Diet
64 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2016
Other factors that can contribute to longevity: • Daily 20g of at least 70 percent dark chocolate/day • Daily 125ml red grape juice.
Okinawan Dish
Diet Recommendations • Low in calories, high in nutritional density. • High water density. • Low in: meat (less than 500g/week with emphasis on lean), full-fat dairy products (maximum 3 portions per day), refined grains, saturated fat, sugar and salt.
• High in vegetables (around 7/day- particularly root and green and yellow vegetables) and fruits (3/day – particularly anti-oxidant rich fruits (raisins, strawberries, raspberries and papaya) and red colored fruits (tomatoes for collagen production).
• Moderate in fish products (minimum 120g twice/week) and marine-based carotenoids, such as seaweed, algae and kelp.
• Emphasis on complex carbohydrates (whole grains, oatmeal).
• Moderate in healthy fats (olive oil, nuts and avocado).
• Liberal use of herbs and spices (turmeric, cayenne peppers, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, black pepper and thyme).
• Regular tea consumption (jasmine or green tea). • Emphasis on probiotics and prebiotics for healthy intestines.
• Adequate intakes of vitamin D and calcium.
• One tbsp of ground flaxseed/day.
KEEP THIS IN MIND Longevity is a complex phenomenon with emphasis on general wellbeing. A healthy body is the one that will live longer. Considering the low level of physical activity, the fastfood culture and the social pressure to eat more, it might seem difficult to make such changes; if you make the effort now, it will pay off in the future.

FAMILY
10 STEPS
TO GET YOUR PICKY EATER TO EAT HEALTHY Tired of mealtime tantrums and tears? Worry no more! Many parents get frustrated at mealtimes, with their children refusing to eat most of their food, but there are simple steps you can take to overcome this.
1 Focus on Yourself
Parents often surrender to their child’s wants to avoid a mealtime tantrum… It’s a trap! There are some steps to help you improve your attitude towards food.
Respect Your Child’s Opinion
Don’t force-feed a child who claims to be full or not hungry; it undermines his/ her sense of hunger or satiety. Children’s palates are very sensitive, so maybe your child simply doesn’t like the food.
Be Patient and Persistent
Food rejection is a natural part of child development. Children need repeated exposure to the same food before they’re willing to taste it.
Be a Role Model
Your children will eat what they see you eat.
66 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2016
2 Establish a Routine
Picky eaters snack throughout the day, thus getting full before meals. Prevent this by scheduling meals and snacks.
3 Start Small
• Introduce new foods in tiny portions (1/2tsp). • Introduce during snack time; the child who refuses to eat will be hungry by the next meal and will eat anything.
4 Subtly Introduce New Foods
• If your child likes rice, try shredding new vegetables over it or add small pieces of broccoli over spaghetti. • Always taste a meal first; make sure it’s appetizing.
5 Involve Your Child
Ask your child to help with selecting and preparing food.
THURSDAY March 17
FRIDAY

6 Be Creative Serve Attractive Food Cut shapes, mix colors and include sliced vegetables with their favorite dip. Know Their Preferences Crunchiness/smoothness, saltiness/sweetness, and try to modify food texture accordingly.
7 Seek Help From a Friend
A study by Dr. Helen Hendy found that preschoolers were more likely to try mango when another classmate tried it.
8 Minimize Distraction
SOURCE PHOTO/PICKYEATERSARABIA.COM
Shift Focus to Something Other Than the Food’s Taste Its color, shape or texture.
The whole family should be seated at the table for meals, with eating being the sole focus.
By making small and steady changes, you can promote healthy eating habits which your child can carry throughout his/her life.
9 Avoid Food Rewards
Children should identify food as fuel, not reward. Rewarding with specific foods (like chocolate) leads to poor eating habits. Your child may associate eating with achievement or stress relief rather than hunger.
10 Don’t Buy Unhealthy Foods
Even if your child asks for it! Massa Bitar, MSc. RD. Registered Clinical Dietitian and Food Safety Expert MSc in Nutrition from King's College London Massa's nutriclub Massa.nutriclub

SPIRITUALITY
the
HOLY QUR’AN
A GUIDE TO SALVATION The infinite rewards of Qur’an recitation. “And We have certainly made the Qur'an easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?” (54:22) The Qur’an, the speech of Allah, which was revealed to the Last Messenger in the Arabic language through Angel Jibreel, is a source of ultimate guidance for mankind. We learn from the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) many virtues for reciting the Qur’an with a pure intention.
1. Tranquillity and Mercy Descend The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Any group of people that assemble in one of the Houses of Allah to recite the Book of Allah, learning and teaching it, tranquillity will descend upon them, mercy will engulf them, angels will surround them and Allah will make mention of them to those in His proximity.” (Sahih Muslim)
68 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2016
2. Countless Reward for its Recitation The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah, he will be credited with a good deed, and a good deed gets a ten-fold reward. I do not say that Alif-Lam-Mim is one letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter.” (Al Tirmidhi)
3. Raise in the Ranks The Prophet (PBUH) said: “One who was devoted to the Qur'an will be told to recite, ascend and recite carefully as he recited carefully when he was in the world, for he will reach his abode when he comes to the last verse he recites.”
(Sunan Abi Dawud)
4. Closest to Allah The Prophet said: “'Allah has His own people among mankind.' They said:'O Messenger of Allah, who are they?' He said: 'The people of the Qur'an, the people of Allah are those who are closest to Him.'” (Sunnan Ibn Majah)
5. It Acts as an Intercessor on the Day of Judgment The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Read the Qur'an, for it will come as an intercessor for its reciters on the Day of Resurrection.” (Muslim)
6. The Best in Conduct The Prophet (PBUH) said, “The best amongst you is the one who learns the Qur'an and teaches it.” (Sahih Al Bukhari)
Also, the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “I am leaving behind me two weighty things. One of them is the Book of Allah; that is the strong rope of Allah. Whosoever holds firmly to it, will be the guided, and whosoever leaves it goes astray.” (Riyad As Saliheen) Web: aateam.org theislamicteam

Cordoba from Watch Tower

In this journey through two of the key cities of Muslim Spain, Cordoba, the Umayyad
Caliphate’s capital; and Granada, where it all came to an end, we will offer a glimpse of Al Andalus through its most important and charming remnants.
CORDOBA
Whilst tourists head to Granada, connoisseurs come to Cordoba. “Europe was darkened at sunset, Cordoba shone with public lamps; Europe was dirty, Cordoba built a thousand baths … Europe lay in mud, Cordoba’s streets were paved … Europe’s nobility could not sign its name, Cordoba’s children went to school; Europe’s monks could not read the baptismal service, Cordoba’s teachers created a library of Alexandrian

Greece and Italy are often cited as the cradles of modern western civilization, where we get notions of democracy, academia and more. However, an increasing number of people are starting to question this notion and instead are appreciating the significance of the Muslim period in Spain Al Andalus (711-1492). A time when culture, civilization, academia and society peaked, it even included periods of amazing inter-faith tolerance. Could it be that in fact Spain is the real cradle of European civilization?
achievement was designed to appear like a forest of palms, allowing light to flood in and the praying spirit to soar. Opened in 785 AD, on the site of the Church of St. Vincent, which Abd Al Rahman had bought, today it is again a Christian place of worship. That was irreversibly sealed in the 16th century, when the center of the mosque was ripped out and replaced with a cathedral. Fortunately, the stunning scallop-shaped mihrabs remain.

It may have lasted a mere 30 years, but this palace city was built by Abd Al Rahman III in the 10th century to make a statement. He had declared himself Caliph of Islam - the only time a caliphate was declared in Europe. Madinat Al Zahra took 10,000 laborers setting 6,000 stone blocks a day for 40 years to complete, and was completely sacked by Al Mohads. This is why today, at times it can seem like an uninspiring pile of rocks, somewhat compensated by the impressively new museum built into the ground, which contains interesting exhibits and an auditorium showing what the opulent palace city would’ve looked like in its brief heyday. Dressed in Arab finery, the royals made the ceremonial walk to the top and entered the fort-like palace. Inside, Abu Abdullah Muhammad XII, the last Nasrid king (later known as Boabdil), was waiting for them, the key to his ancestral home, in his hand. As it was passed over, in what
was essentially a token gesture since the terms of surrender had been agreed months before, this signaled the end of nearly 800 years of Muslim and Jewish presence in the country.

Once you have visited the Alhambra, you will spend your whole life yearning to go back. As the narrative says, this was merely home to the last ‘petty’ Muslim ruler of Al Andalus. EXPLORE KSA
One of the many streams.
On the Trail of a
Natural Hot Water Spring Following the stream leading to the water. By Mohammed Mirza
While many disbelieve the chances of there being natural springs in KSA, much to their astonishment there is at least one known spring in the country. In fact, some local water companies boast of their water being sourced from natural springs. The specialty about the springs at Al Lith is that they are natural hot springs, something one would expect to find only in places like Europe or Japan.
80 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2016
Although they are commonly referred to as Al Lith Hot Springs, the spring is not actually in the town of Al Lith - it is situated around 50 kilometers from there. Close but not quite there.
The Journey
The ride to the town of Al Lith from Jeddah was an easy one for us as it is located on the major Jeddah-Jizan Highway. This same highway goes all the way to Yemen as well. Once at Al Lith we knew that we wouldn’t be left with many options for food, so we decided to eat at a massive
food court in the main city. The place we stopped at has a plethora of restaurants and sits right on the main highway. It is also a popular stopover for buses carrying travelers to the southern parts of the Kingdom. We had what Al Lith is known for – seafood. As expected it was tasty enough, despite its lack of spices. We got off the highway and headed onto an adjacent single lane road. This road goes all the way to the hot spring, running through a number of small villages on the way. There were just two signboards on this road, which confirmed that we were heading in the right direction. The road itself was flanked by small trees, and right before we reached the spring, the greenery in the surroundings seemed to increase. A final signboard marked the location and from there the springs were a stone’s throw away. We parked our cars and walked towards the water.
Luxuriant grass greets us.
A stream running into a thick forest.
On the Trail of a Stream
There were multiple streams gushing from the spring. We put our hands in the nearest one to us and much to our surprise it was refreshingly cold.
We couldn’t see where these streams started. We walked over them until we came across the biggest one. At that time we were told by a passerby that the hot spring was to the east of us. We decided to visit the hot springs later and explore the stream in front of us that meandered its way calmly into the unknown. Here it felt like we were in the middle of a tropical rainforest with all the lush green trees and luxuriant grass that surrounded us. The stream was flowing from the north and we walked by it towards its source.
We continued walking, with the stream at times getting kneehigh. There were areas where we barely made it through because of the thorny plants that blocked the way. We continued till we could go no further and by then the stream had gotten visibly smaller. Nearby was a place where the dense forest opened up into a desert that had a beautiful backdrop of chestnut-colored mountains.
I found it to be quite similar to a previous hiking experience I had in the jungles of Kodaikanal in India. The place felt so tranquil; a spot where one could just lie down, hear the birds chirp and listen to the pleasant sound of the flowing stream. DESTINATIONKSA.COM

earth’s mantle. They are normally found in volcanic regions. In KSA, this hot spring near Al Lith is the only known one in the country so far.
The Hot Spring
At the Hot Springs
We then went on to where the hot springs were. From a distance we could see groups of people just standing by it and staring deeply into it. Some were even seen filling big plastic bottles with 82 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2016

However, this hot spring has higher than bathing temperatures, so hot in fact that we couldn’t place our hands in it for more than a second; perhaps just enough to get our feet and hands cleaned by quick taps on the water. The hot springs were muddy and had algae growing in it, which is surprising considering its high temperatures. On the whole, we were left in awe by the experience, as it was the first time for us to see one in real life. But what we enjoyed more than that was the trail of the stream that we followed. Definitely a place worth visiting.

The Mysterious Wells of Al Kharj The history of Oyoun As Seeh and Oyoun An Najm. By Mohammed Mirza
These wells have been used by the residents of Al Kharj and travelers for centuries, but of late the wells have dried up; though some amount of water can be seen in them after it rains.
Located less than a kilometer apart, two huge natural wells known as Oyoun As Seeh and Oyoun An Najm are one of the biggest attractions of Al Kharj, less than an hour drive from Riyadh.
SOURCE PHOTO/FLICKR.COM/ALHARBISEYE
While some believe that they had been formed by a meteor shower, others disagree and suggest that they are actually massive sinkholes; sinkholes so deep that they have reached the watery beds within the earth’s crust.
While the exact time of the formation of these wells is not known, records show the area near the wells to have been inhabited for over a millennium.
Recently, the wells have been fenced off but it still hasn’t deterred visitors. When the peninsula used to struggle for drinking water, Al Kharj had plenty of it, boasting of date farms and pastures that were unseen in the region. This oasis in the desert did not only have these wells as part of its water supply, it was also blessed with a network of ponds and natural aquifers. Considering its rich past abundant with water, an iconic water tower was constructed in the city that even has a revolving restaurant inside it. DESTINATIONKSA.COM

One very cool highlight is the wind tower (badqir) fitted with vertical air ducts that direct the wind from the outside, providing a clever and natural cooling system for the home and right into the majlis. Location: Sheikh Abdullah Bin Isa Ave, Muharraq Tel: +973-17293820

Khubz Tannoor Traditional Bahraini flat bread.
Balaleet
Sweet vermicelli topped with an omelet.
There are three locations, but you definitely have to check out their branch in Shaikh Salman Fort – also known as Riffa Fort. The fort itself is architecturally mesmerizing, a highlight of which is their exquisite doors carved with Qur’anic verses. As was Arab custom, the date of establishment of the fort and dates of great events were also preserved with phrases carved on the doors.
One can relax in the café’s outdoor seating overlooking the valley and enjoy a traditional Bahraini breakfast. Instead of a menu, there is a set breakfast platter that consists of traditional dishes with modern touches, such as baked beans, foul beans, mini grilled cheese sandwiches and alo chab sandwiches. NASEEF CAFÉ Located in a mall within the Bab Al Bahrain souq, Naseef Café is known for its locally famous ice creams, traditional breakfasts, lunches and dinners. The café is styled in a modern setting but decorated with old-fashioned Bahraini benches. Breakfast is served on old-style trays and bowls, giving a sense of culture and tradition. Tel: +973-39622882 Location: Bab Al Bahrain Mall, Al Mutanabi Ave, Manama
