A SENSE OF COMMUNITY Community – a group of people living in the same place or having characteristics, attitudes, and/ or interests in common. It’s the feeling members have of belonging, that they matter to one another. What communities do you belong to, Sharqiya? What communities have you cultivated? The themes above are what we explored in this issue, leaving us elated and proud. We start off with Abdulaziz Al Nemer, a community mover and shaker who has made it his mission to explore our lands and spread awareness on how to preserve it. We sat with Saeed Khabaz, a man whose love for his community drove him to dedicate all his time to its growth. We spoke to Hana Al Zuhair, a warrior who made it her mission to fight everyone’s fight. We explored communities of readers and collectors, lovers of words and history, helping us understand how beautiful it is to belong, and more importantly, make others feel like they belong, too.

Putting this issue together felt a little different. Maybe it’s because everyone featured here is different in their own way, or define community differently, or because while learning more about them, they helped us gain insight into ourselves. Or maybe it required heart, all heart, in preparing. Which makes sense; your community starts there. Love completely, Sharqiya.

SKILLS FOR KIDS Aloula empowers the underprivileged with early intervention programs By Omar Batterjee
In today’s volatile and rapid work place, the gap between skills people have and skills they need widens every day. This is especially true when it comes to underprivileged children who don’t have access to modern learning institutions, and who grow up with outdated skillset. For a person to succeed and achieve upward mobility in life they require 21st century skills, such as critical thinking, information literacy, and self-development. 12 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2018
Aloula, the oldest non-profit organization (NPO) in Saudi Arabia, supports children in need through early intervention and equips them with skills to thrive in the 21st Century. They do so through programs that are designed to fulfill every aspect of a child’s needs. Aloula’s Basic Needs program satisfies their basic needs, such as food, shelter, and clothing. They use this foundation to empower children to learn essential skills they need to succeed. Finally, they use a sports program to teach children about good health, punctuality and discipline. Dania Al Maeena, CEO of Aloula said, “What they learn in our programs will enable them (to break the cycle of poverty) by conditioning them to be globally aware, better able to navigate the digital world and more engaged as 21st century citizens. These skills will qualify them to solve the problems they face, self-teach new skills, and adapt to most environments and achieve success in college, career and life.” Aloula’s skills program focuses on self-development skills such as critical thinking, problem solving and communication. Simultaneously, the children also learn about information, media, and ICT literacy. Finally, the program focuses on life and career enhancement skills such as adaptability, accountability, and self-direction.

Additionally, their skills are measured before and after the programs to evaluate outcomes, along with measuring, quality of life, emotional intelligence and wellbeing of their beneficiaries using advanced innovative assessment tools such as Six Seconds EQ.
Aloula has been working on community development in South Jeddah for more than 55 years. Through its new strategy Aloula is dedicated to helping children realize their personal goals and become contributing members of society.
Recently Aloula was recognized by the King Khalid Foundation as the NPO with the most distinguished intervention strategy.

Mind Over Mountains
Meet Aziz Al Nemer, a man on a quest.

16 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2018
When the mountains called him, Abdulaziz Al Nemer answered. His journey to explore started back in 2010, while he was studying in Arizona. He had a hard time adjusting at first, so he chose to be physically active to feel better. Aziz thought of trying something new. “I realized Arizona is filled with mountains, I decided to explore the trails nearby. I had no idea what I was doing,” he recalled. After his tough, yet successful three-day trip at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, he found comfort in his solitude and in nature. That’s when AzizWalks was born. “I like being solo. I started organizing trips for myself around the state taking the Greyhound buses. It was scary at first, but the adventures were worth it.” He then discovered ThruHiking, and the more he read about it the more he got into it. This type of hiking is very long in distance, and involves hiking beginning-to-end trails in one season, lasting up to six months.

Followed by a chuckle, he mentions: “Some die before reaching to the end. I thought the people embarking this venture were crazy. Now I’m in the process of becoming one of them.” Aziz’s transition from being out in nature all the time to a corporate job was not a walk in the park. After a lot of planning and hesitation, he realized he didn’t want to wait until retirement. He decided to

Upon his graduation in 2014, Aziz set a far-fetched goal to hike the 4,279 kilometer long Pacific Crest Trail when he retires. He finished college and returned to Sharqiya and started working.
quit his job and go forth with his ultimate goal: to hike the PCT. Aziz is currently training for his upcoming bold journey. As a result, he started going on his own exploration treks around the area. “I needed to learn crucial survival and planning skills prior, and now it feels like I am rediscovering my home,” he explained. “When you hear Sharqiya you think of corporate companies and oil. We are much more than that, we possess natural and historical wealth.” From Mangrove forests, Portuguese forts, to ancient open-graves, Aziz has been on the move around town. These sights set him on a quest to spread awareness. The mission: to

preserve our heritage and to be environmentally cautious. When Aziz visited one of the last Mangrove forests in Al Qatif coast, he was quite disappointed. The forest is shrinking, and due to that the seagulls are gone. “They used to be all over the coast. When was the last time you saw a seagull around?” In Tarout Island, Aziz came across precious territories and forts that go back to the Ottoman Empire and the Portuguese invasion. Unfortunately, they are abandoned and inaccessible. “Khobar and Dhahran are young cities that were built after discovering oil, if you’re looking for rich history look into places around Al Ahsa Oasis and Al Qatif. History that 18 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2018

traces back to the Phoenician ancient civilization.” The history of Tarout Island dates to five thousand years BC, one of the oldest parts of the Arabian Peninsula. When we asked him how he was getting by, he explained that so little is documented and it is just a word of mouth. “I had to scout for stories and information from the local elderly,” he says. His latest finding was just around the corner. Aziz’s little trek through Al Muraikabat Mountain Park in Al Dammam left him with an interesting discovery. On these rocky mountains, there are open stone graves where an ancient
society used to leave their dead to rest. “Who knew that there are ancient open-graves in a family park here? It’s all unnoticed.” We ask the same question, what a find. Aziz will do anything to give back to nature, as nature healed him in ways he never thought of. When we asked him what is the most important thing the wilderness has taught him, Aziz mentioned, “Physical pain is nothing, you get over it and become numb. It’s the mind that you need strengthen.” We wish him all the best on his upcoming journey, and to come back safe to us. Salam! Website: azizwalks.com azizwalks DESTINATIONKSA.COM 19

Nothing Less than Extraordinary A man, his community, and the love that binds the two. By Noura Al Joaib
It was in a classroom in 1974 that Saeed Khabaz got his first, and most life altering, reality check. Call it fate or an instructor’s acute insight, the following question set the tone for what came next in Khabaz’s life: “You know you can do better, right?” Ever since, “you can do better” has been the credo Khabaz lives by. From an apprenticeship program in the oil conglomerate Saudi Aramco to being the first Saudi professional in Human Resource Management in the company, Khabaz’s career spanning decades sought to pay tribute to the Physics teacher’s question. Still, that wasn’t enough. In 1999, a special early retirement package made itself appealing for Khabaz who already knew then that it was time to move forward unto a new adventure. Enter the next era of his professional career: Buying a medical clinic in his hometown Tarout, in desperate need for revival. And he did. Since then, the clinic has flourished, becoming one of the best, serving its area. Again, that wasn’t
enough for the charismatic and intelligent gentleman. Aside from running the clinic, Khabaz began mentoring, training, and coaching youth from his community. “My goal is to revive the local economy,” he tells me with the conviction of a man who believes nothing is impossible. “With our evolving economic climate, there are opportunities rising. I decided to begin working with our young talents to identify these opportunities.” He spearheaded, with the region’s Chamber of Commerce, the Qatif Investment Forum back in February of 2017 with the aim of investing in ripe opportunities that would contribute to the economic landscape of the Qatif area. A few months down the line, he established a voluntary mentorship program called “100 Female Millionaires”. The program seeks small projects run by women and develop said projects so they may reach at least 1 million in sales in a year. After running for about 9 months, the program currently mentors 12 projects. Khabaz has shifted his focus to mentor the mentors

themselves to assist a wider number of mentees locally. “We want to cultivate the inherent entrepreneurial talent in women.”
With women being one of our nation’s most significant untapped resource, Khabaz wants to spend the remainder of his years assisting in realizing that potential as integral contributors to their communities.

“Why only women, though?” “It’s because they’ve been suffering a lot. They want to do more. To serve their country. Many don’t need the guidance; just the venue to shine. There are others that need mentoring to better harness their capabilities. It’s their turn, your turn, now.”
During the Life Long Learning conference in 1998.
Born, raised, and remaining still in Tarout, I couldn’t help but ask what made Qatif a close-knitted community far surpassing neighboring ones. “Its indigenousness plays a role,” he responds, “plus, we all know one another. It’s usually the case in farming communities, much like Al Ahsa. It hasn’t changed with time.” It’s a growing community of 600 thousand individuals with a high unemployment rate. This makes it a good place to cultivate private businesses. “Vision 2030 encourages the creation of jobs, not create jobs themselves. The oil economy made us reliant on seeking jobs. Now, it’s our turn to create the jobs. It is a very challenging vision but if we help the government, then it is achievable.”
Away from oil, how do you see Sharqiya contributing to the realization of Vision 2030? By taking advantage of its location, of massive conglomerates such as Aramco and its research centers. Additionally, and maybe more importantly, the discipline that is inherited from the fishing/farming heritage of the province.
Fishing/farming heritage? How so? Farming and fishing teaches patience. You plant a palm tree and wait 6-7 years to see the first fruit. That kind of discipline and alignment with what people can do, is what makes the vision doable.
Sharqiya, home to Khabaz and million others, is a professional multi-cultural melting pot. “At one point during my career in Aramco, I worked in a building alongside 57 different nationalities.” Indeed, Sharqiya’s professional landscape contributes to its diversity. That, coupled with its rich heritage makes it a hotbed of economic growth and innovation, “but only if one truly believes in oneself and learns how to plan.” A disciple of dreams, Khabaz does not discount the importance of fanciful reveries and the heights it could take us. Still, strategic planning is key to making our dreams come true. “The most difficult thing in my opinion is not having the right dream and the right path to actualization. When it comes to love, we don’t want a replication of Qais and Layla. We want a love where Qais meets Layla.” A man full of calm, unwavering faith, he sets forth to create a better future for his children and grandchildren; simply, youth everywhere. “I have 6 grandkids. I don’t want them to feel sorry for themselves. I want them to seek opportunities where opportunities exist. Which is why I do what I do.” Today, 44 years since his instructor asked him that fateful question, Khabaz has not only done better, but made it his business to create lifelines of opportunities for his community, instigating a ripple effect where hundreds, if not thousands, “do better”.

of about 340 special educators. The money donated was also used to perform bone surgery for more than 120 children, as well as improve the conditions of roughly 80 children annually. Finally, the donations also helped integrate 34 special needs children from special needs schools to general education. Needless to say, the initiatives done by NCB are life-changing for children nation-wide. These campaigns were done as a part of NCB’s Ahalina (under the slogan ‘our duty’) program. The program’s
goal is to contribute to the community through three facets of society: women, youth, and children. The “Donate by Saying No” campaign’s focus is on the latter, and NCB needs your help in order to exceed last year’s goal of SR 1 million. ahalinancb It cannot be emphasized enough how much children need everyone’s help, and with an initiative that requires no money, no effort, and high social awareness on your part, NCB is asking you to do one thing: Just don’t print your receipts. SIMPLY DONATE BY SAYING NO.

EMPOWER WOMEN Hana Al Zuhair’s iron will and the community she created By Dalia Darweesh

EMPOWERED WOMEN
There is little in life that is as moving as witnessing women support and stand up for each other, especially through obstacles, struggles, and life’s drawbacks. Our protagonist is no stranger to perseverance. And to persevere, one must have had barriers to overcome. I had the honor of sitting down with the influential Hana Al Zuhair, Executive Vice President of Prince Sultan Fund for Women Development (PSFW), who turned her dreams into a reality, and fought to support women. “My life began as a journey with multiple stops. I realized that with every end came a new beginning.” After obtaining her Master’s degree in Business Administration 15 years ago
from Bahrain, she gained new insights on business development and management. Life presented her with two opportunities then, and she chose to be the president of the Businesswomen’s Center at Asharqia Chamber, after being the Vice President for two years. Her many achievements include attending a prestigious business consultancy program, and being the only Saudi there. “I’m proud to say that I was amongst the top 3 internationally certified business consultants.”
She was also invited to the White House by US President Barack Obama during his term, to speak about the fund. “Ten years ago, our mission as women was to reach to where we are today, despite the
obstacles and society’s lack of acceptance,” she said. Al Zuhair wanted to establish a Center of Excellence that offers Business Administration courses from UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization) for Asharqia Chamber. It was implemented a week after she spoke with Prince Talal bin Abdulaziz, then later was implemented in 27 chambers, Kingdom-wide. Asharqia Chamber started implementing business training courses for women by 2004. “I noticed the enthusiasm and passion in Saudi women who wanted to start their own businesses.” Al Zuhair had higher aspirations: she wanted to start a fund DESTINATIONKSA.COM 27
for women to support small businesses. “For us women, a dream is only a pathway to achieving our goals, but it was a challenge. I was challenging myself, to prove that this dream wasn’t impossible.” She has always believed in training, explaining that it is a wonderful beginning to creating a new generation, with new outlooks on life. It is important that women aim to strengthen their competencies, to have an impact on our community. “It’s not wrong to admit that you don’t know what your skills are; what’s wrong is not discovering them.” Through education, self-improvement, training, and seeking guidance from those who are experienced, you improve as an individual. 28 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2018
In 2005, she witnessed a transitional shift, when the United Nations invited her to represent Asharqia Chamber. By then she got to share the idea with the UN, even though the fund was still under process. Al Zuhair knew then that she found the perfect time to begin planning it. Women are the building blocks of society, and Al Zuhair managed to bring her vision to life. The Prince Sultan Fund for Women Development is a non-profit organization that was established in 2008, with the consent of Prince Mohammed bin Fahd. Its purpose is to focus on Saudi women’s development and empowerment. The fund has three main centers. The first of which is a Business Support and Funding Center, providing a platform for women pursuing small to medium-sized businesses in need of training, funding, and technical support. Whether it’s starting a new business, or refining an existing one, the center’s goal is to create opportunities for women in the community. The second center is the Prince Mohammed bin Fahd Youth Leadership Center specializing in human resources development and competency rehabilitation programs. These programs are to prepare a pioneering generation of women culturally and economically, providing them with the necessary tools while instilling a selfleadership culture to maintain creativity and excellence. Finally, Princess Jawaher bint Nayef Center for Women
Studies and Research which gathers data and information on various Saudi womenrelated topics through a virtual library, becoming a main source of fundamental studies. This year, PSFW signed a contract with Modon, the Industrial Property Authority, to establish a Social Innovation Technology Center. This will create investment opportunities that support both businessmen and businesswomen, alongside small and mediumsized businesses, to increase their success.
With Vision 2030, we are witnessing a positive change in the roles of Saudi women. The Fund will start a unique program called Big Sister, suited for those with a certain talent or interest, seeking to expand on their dreams. This is achieved by providing a mentor who is experienced, to teach and guide them through their journey. Lianak Sanadi (Because You Are My Support) is an initiative on behalf of women to the men supporting them. “Men and women don’t compete with one another other. They complete each other.” Another beautiful program that PSFWD will implement in 2018, called Adopt an Orphan, instills human values in us while enriching the values of social work in the community. “Come and spend a day with us here,” Al Zuhair said. We’re very happy we did. Location: 11 St.., and 22nd. Industrial Area Number 1, Dammam Web: psfw.org pfsw DESTINATIONKSA.COM 29

THEY DON’T MAKE ‘EM LIKE THAT ANYMORE Discover Taybeen Museum: a man’s timecapsule to the good old days. By Tyma Hezam
30 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2018
In a world moving so quick, where everything is stored in 0’s and 1’s, we have started taking memories for granted. Collector Majid AlGhamdi is stopping time, so that we can revisit our childhood, breathe in that innocence once again, and smile. You know that feeling you get when someone mentions playing the Atari, or watching Captain Majid again? Talk about old school goodness. Tucked away in Alazizyah, Taybeen Museum is a hidden gem serving all that nostalgia, and so much more. Since he was a little kid, AlGhamdi has been fascinated by the idea of collecting everything that is old. From drinks, games, sports equipment, to old devices, basically anything new that entered the Kingdom in the ‘70s and ‘80s. He never had a plan, he just realized new editions of products would arrive and the designs of the packaging is changing. AlGhamdi wanted to catch ‘em all.
STAFF PHOTO / ALZAHRA AL DAWOOD
While he itches to find missing editions of vintage magazines and posters, his collections, packed in boxes, have reached up to the ceiling! Those memories got out of control, until one day when he decided to open the boxes, organize his fortune into categories and decades, and— voilà!—the concept of Taybeen Museum was born. In the beginning, AlGhamdi started

off by participating at events and festivals around Sharqiya and the rest of the Kingdom. Not so long ago, Taybeen Museum was an interactive space at Atareek, The Historic Jeddah Festival, where AlGhamdi and his team created huge View-Master reels with old photos of Saudi Arabia around the 50’s and 60’s. The visitors would spin them and relive the past, and Taybeen Museum became a crowd favorite.
32 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2018
With the help of family and friends, AlGhamdi then decided to turn his initiative into a joyful space set up on an area of 300 meters at his family’s guest house. He requested anyone travelling to help him complete his collection sets, to help him own all editions of collectibles from different decades. The museum is small in size, true, but big in heart. With more than 10,000 items structured into a maze with specific zones, Taybeen Museum is the literal definition of ‘taking a trip down the memory lane.’ It has a zone for everything: old candy, classic games, devices, vintage clothing, and much more, plus Barbie dolls, Kodak polaroids, Majid magazines, VCR players, and the list goes on and on. AlGhamdi’s refreshing passion is evident through all the little details. From ad prints on the wall to cassettes on the ceiling, every nook and corner of the museum offers something for the eyes. Along the zones, there are curated themed sets – an oldschool candy store filled with goodies like Rico wafers, Grendizer bubblegum, and diamond ring lollipops, for instance. Just outside this store, there’s a phone booth to call the 90’s back. A few zones further, after the Macintosh computers and floppy disks, there’s an 80’s themed living room, where old popular

AlGhamdi truly created an experience that leaves anyone yearning for a happiness felt in a former time. With a couple of years being an invite-only space, Taybeen Museum is officially opening to the public this March. Through social media, he was able to create a community of thousands of collectors and old-school fanatics discussing ideas and waiting impatiently to visit. He doesn’t want it to stop there: he hopes to promote the culture of donating and preserving old items around Saudi Arabia. For now, he’s just very grateful for his parents’ support. He couldn’t have done this without his father’s continuous help to make this project come to life, and his mother’s patience throughout those years. Twenty years and counting of “junk in his room” turned into a delightful venture with an outcome loved by all. Location: Ash Sheraa Dist., Khobar taybeen1982

WHERE WOR(L)DS COLLIDE Meet Saudi wordsmith Ashraf Fagih
By Dalia Darweesh
Ashraf Fagih – masterful writer, prolific reader, and advocator of the compelling power of words – is a man of many hats. He’s notably known for being one of the first to introduce the Arabic readership to the ever imaginary, exciting and unexplored world of science fiction. He began his journey in authorship with a story written at the age 9. “It’s not something to brag about, because many kids do so at that age,” he told us. Yet, he had higher aspirations. By the age of 14, he was more interested in writing science fiction comics. Not so long after, in 1997 and by the age of 20, he published his first Arabic science fiction short stories collection, which was titled Ghosts Hunter.
Ashraf comes from a generation that was traditionally conservative, a generation that was mostly deprived of the leisures the younger generations have nowadays. It was somewhat limiting what people could and couldn’t do. Consequently, he wanted to reach out to the outside world through his books. “I add a local touch to my stories, like a female character fixing her hijab, for instance, just to hint 34 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2018

In 2000, he published his second collection of short stories, which was titled Longing for the Stars.
that this is not Japan, this is not the anime world, this is not Star Wars. This is us, this is KSA.” Between 2000 and 2012, Ashraf wrote nothing. “I got married, I had 2 kids, I went abroad to get my Master’s and PhD. I was being reshaped, reformatted, mentally and psychologically.” The fact that he was writing in science fiction also made it somewhat difficult to continue, explaining that the writing process is not simply about expressing yourself: you’re expressing an idea, a concept, and a thought, all contributing to the creation of characters and worlds in any science fiction story. TV factors in killing science fiction books nowadays. “The reader should be taken by surprise, by the sheer wonder of the idea. If this is already being shaken by TV, you would lose your niche.” In 2012, he decided to shift his writing style to a different genre: historical fantasy. Hence The Impaler, a story exploring the Eastern origins of Dracula, that he released. I asked Ashraf what inspired him to have this passion for writing. “Being a Virgo is one thing,” he said jokingly. “I grew up in a house that had a considerable library. My family spoke respectively of the elite: people of thought. Perhaps this also inspired me in a way to go and obtain my PhD later on.” I was instantly inspired by, and perhaps a bit jealous of, Ashraf Fagih’s library once I stepped into it. There were books from different genres,

authors, and times. “I believe that a writer should find or create his own comfort zone.” His library is his sanctuary, his creative space, away from all distractions; it’s where all the great characters in his books are born. He is currently working on a strictly historical work. “I’m swinging between the past and the future, with the hopes that I will find myself in between.” His accomplishments don’t stop at that. Ashraf contributes to society through raising awareness on reading. He was a part of the iRead initiative led by King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture, one of the most life-altering initiatives he has ever experienced. He was also invited to participate in many talks and workshops, including one at the Eastern Province’s Literary Club in 2005 and a science fiction
workshop in Kuwait’s Takween in 2016. He is a constant guest on Hakaya Misk, a festival that creates cultural and educational values for younger people, held by Misk Foundation. He’s also a science editor at Al Qafilah Magazine to spread and advocate the culture of science. Ashraf shared his thoughts with us regarding the challenges that Saudi writers face today. “Commitment and a mission. You seldom find a writer with a clear mission in writing.” In Sharqiya specifically, Ashraf says that it’s a place with a well-calibrated level of intellect. “Sharqawis are career-driven. The dedication is there, but time isn’t always.” Some of Ashraf’s favorite Saudi writers include Abdulrahman Al Muneef, Layla Al Juhani, and Mohammed Hasan Alwan. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 35

Ashraf’s book The Impaler
The more important question is, where can we find his books? They’re available through his publisher Athar, and they can also be found at Jarir Bookstore. Our best bet would be to find them at book fairs in Riyadh and Jeddah. If we aren’t lucky enough to find them, we don’t have to worry – Ashraf is working on republishing one of his short story collections, through Kindle.
A final message from Ashraf Fagih to our readers: “Read more, please”.

MUSIC
A Conversation With
SRRAH AL GHEITHY …ON (MUSIC) NOTES FROM THE HEART. I have a 7-4 job that I mostly don’t relate to. I’m currently doing my masters in Renewable Energy online; which is a field I want to pursue. I’m also an aspiring pianist. You see, I come from a musical background, with parents who have always encouraged me and my sisters to take music lessons. I’ve only been playing piano for three years now. But ever since I started, I have been questioning why I haven’t started before. 38 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2018

Tell us a bit about yourself.
How did you discover your talent?
COURTESY PHOTO / @SAUDIARABIA
I was in no way interested in piano before. My sisters took piano lessons, while I did guitar. Ironically, when I went to college, all my friends decided to take a piano class, but I still took a guitar class. My roommate once left her piano with me, and one day I decided to give it a shot. Then I figured: wow, I can actually do this. It started out as something I was learning to do, and it evolved to: “I can’t wait to go home and play the piano!”.
Do you have a routine that you follow?
If I have a lot on my mind, or have a really stressful day, I just go play. It makes me forget what I was upset about. To be able to focus on playing, is a stress reliever to me.
Who are your favorite pianists?
I would have to say Ludovico Einaudi, Yann Tiersen and Yiruma. My favorite piece to play is Valse by Evgeny Grinko, I like the beat, and I play this piece the best.
learning how to play some songs on YouTube, and I was afraid of telling her. When she found out, she told me “there’s no one right way to play the piano”. If you play something and you feel good about it, then that’s enough.
If your family and friends had to describe you in three words, what would they be?
A word of advice to Sharqawis who are interested in playing the piano?
They will definitely describe me as a pianist, (because I keep bugging them about it). Positive vibes, since I say that all the time. I’ve also hypnotized them enough to associate me with a solar energist.
Best advice you’ve ever received?
I had a tutor for six months, and she used to teach me how to read notes. I was also
So many people tell me, “I have always wanted to play the piano”. Sometimes, they assume that I’ve been playing it for so long. I want everyone to know that it’s never too late to learn. UNDER THE ABAYA A #streetstyle book of Saudi fashion
The initiative had a humble beginning, with an Instagram account and a short video (in collaboration with Saudi videographer Nada Hakeem of The Loft) of 12 Saudi female fashion designers, with a monologue written by Mossalli, which was screened at The Mondrian, LA in June 2017. This month, fashion history was made with the publication of the first street style book from Saudi Arabia, appropriately titled Under the Abaya: Street Style from Saudi Arabia. It aims to expose the Saudi female’s unique versatility through a series of photographs submitted by the women themselves and their photographers. “It is an ode to our fashion, but even more so, an ode to the amazing women wearing it,” explained Mossalli. Under the Abaya was produced by Niche Arabia in partnership with Cadillac Saudi Arabia, 42 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2018

Yves Saint Laurent once said, “What is important in a dress is the woman who is wearing it.” And we couldn’t agree more. That’s why Shoesanddrama’s founder, Saudi fashion editor and luxury consultant Marriam Mossalli, decided to launch her Under the Abaya initiative last summer when she was asked to speak about female entrepreneurship by the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture in Los Angeles in a series of academic talks.
Whether it’s simply a younger, more confident generation, or an overall shift in our nation’s mentality to be less conformist and more open to celebrating our individuality and achievements regardless of gender, the Under the Abaya initiative seems to still be at its very beginning. “This edition is just the first!” promised Mossalli. “I see this evolving into an ongoing platform to fight against the media stereotypes of women in Saudi.”
and published by local Saudi publishing house Kholoud Abdulrahman Attar Publishing House (KAAPH). Proceeds of the book’s sales will go toward Niche Arabia’s Fashion Design Scholarship Fund, in which financial aid is offered to underprivileged Saudi girls who are pursuing degrees in fashion design. The concept of the book was something Mossalli had dreamed of doing, but two years ago, she was met with hesitation when women were more weary of having their faces published. “When Misk Art Foundation & Crossway UK asked me to participate at their first Art Books Jeddah Fair this month, I decided to give it one last push,” said Mossalli. “We had over 1,000 submissions in a week! Over 80% of the submitters noted that not only would they be willing to show their face, they actually preferred it!”
And with that intention, undertheabayaksa.com was also launched as a platform for women to submit their Saudi street style photos. “We received a lot of lowresolution phone images that we couldn’t publish in the book, and I didn’t want them to go to waste! So we decided to include them online—where most of Saudi’s population seems to live—and have another edition published in March for International Women’s Day.” “I want people to know that we are proud women under our abayas, and that those garments aren’t ones of suppression— but rather national identity. We have always been dreamers, pioneers, and achievers underneath them. I hope this initiative allows people around the world to realize that, too.” Based on all the positive changes happening in Saudi, Mossalli believes we will soon have a choice to wear them in the Kingdom—and she also believes many of us will continue to choose to still wear it… she, being the first one! #TeamAbaya under_the_abaya DESTINATIONKSA.COM 43

Baraa Alluhaidan
Making Every Ride Count Meet Saudi Arabia’s first female cycling coach and advocate. By Jou Pabalate
56 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2018
At 25 years old, Qassimborn and Riyadh-bred Baraa Alluhaidan is one of the millennial champions of Saudi Arabia’s new paradigm, a paradigm described by many as forward-thinking, innovative, and looks upon its youthful generation to set the tone for the future. Baraa’s journey began in university, while she was getting her Bachelor’s degree in English to appease her father. She knew early on that her passion and interest lies in sports. To find a balance between her family’s wishes to have a good degree and what she wanted, she started emailing international agencies in hopes of finding a program that would train and certify her as a coach and trainer one day.
After sending out dozens of emails, one international agency finally replied and told her she could train under their program. She would study during the day, and right after that, proceed to her training while also working part-time in a gym. Meanwhile, in the Eastern province, her brother Ayman Alluhaidan was also very busy with an NGO project of his own. He first established Spokes Hub to service and develop the cycling community in his university, KFUPM. Eventually, to make it a sustainable endeavor, they turned the store into a social enterprise for more to join. It is at this point that Ayman
asked Baraa to co-found Spokes Hub and take care of its marketing arm. Baraa has always been interested in sports in general, so she happily accepted and started traveling in between Riyadh and Sharqiyah. “I would ride the train to Khobar and couch surf (staying in her friends’ houses, invading their couches). I’d stay for a week or two; I also manned the shop, but back then, as you know, there wasn’t a directive yet for women to be able to work in stores. So the university informed me I shouldn’t be working there, so in a way, I got kicked out from my own store,” said Baraa with a chuckle.
I fell in love with cycling instantly. At first, my parents weren’t too sold on the idea. So, in the beginning, I’d borrow my cousin’s bike and sneak out for a ride, or I’d go with my brother Ayman. — Baraa Alluhaidan
Baraa’s curiosity towards cycling grew as she learned the ins and outs of Spokes Hub. Eventually, she decided she should get on a bike to better understand why everyone loves it. Needless to say, she was hooked on her first ride. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 57
After a while, she wanted to do more with her passion for the sport. She wanted other women to experience the exhilaration and freedom that riding gave her. And so she reached out to the General Sports Authority and connected with the Saudi Cycling Federation. “They were, and still are, very supportive. After some discussions and preparation, they made me the first Saudi female cycling coach. Princess Reema bint Bandar also paved the way for Spokes Hub and myself. They provided me with the facilities I needed to train other women at the Princess Noura University.” Likewise, as an entrepreneur, Spokes Hub was able to reach new heights in a short span of time. The enterprise now also provides guided trips through trusted Marshals. While a lot of them are currently being done in the Eastern Province, their goal is to provide different trips all across the Kingdom. The specialized sport store is now also under the wing of 9/10, an accelerator for startups, and is developing its e-commerce site. From being a fitness lover, Baraa turned into a cycling advocate in just a matter of two years. We asked her why she felt strongly about the sport, and she says, “When I ride my bike outside, I feel like I own myself. At some point, I started commuting on my bicycle to and from the gym I was 58 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2018
working at, a few years back. It was just a few kilometers away from my house, but the feeling of independence, of being able to move on my own, is amazing.” Baraa also started designing and eventually selling Abayas specifically for cycling, which her mom excitedly gives her input on. Her parents are proud of what she has accomplished and continues to support her endeavors— including travelling with her brother and volunteering in different bike shops and even farms around the world, to gain more experience. Baraa is a fine example of the Kingdom’s new generation of role models. She has a gogetter attitude and backs it up with hard work. Her spirit is relentless, never abandoning an idea that benefits others or an opportunity to make things better, just because it’s difficult. If anything, it drives her to make it happen. Her efforts are quickly paying off. She will soon occupy a seat as a board member of the Saudi Cycling Federation. She will not only be the first female on the board, she will also be the youngest, which is a great acconplishment. Baraa shares, “Whenever I tell my friends about doing something different, they’d always say “You’re crazy!” and I just reply, “I am, thank you!” How else could you do things differently?” Web: spokeshub.co

BOOST YOUR WELLNESS WITH MIDDLE EATS Building a healthier community. By Yasmeen Al Haj
62 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2018
What if I told you that in order to build your community, you should focus on yourself? That before anyone else, your mental and physical health must come first? Yes, you can change the world, and all you have to do is to be a little selfish.
Start by scheduling some time to do things for your body, mind, and soul.
“To change the world, you must change yourself.” When I first read this, I thought that it was telling me to mind my own business. But the truth is, to live a happy, healthy, and successful life, loving yourself is in fact a necessity. You are more important than your work, social network, and even your family. You might ask, how? What does putting yourself first mean? To me, it means many things. It’s making it a priority to get enough sleep, eat nutritious foods, and dedicate time to myself. It’s sitting out under the sun, making time to do the things I love, like watching movies and playing the piano. Prioritizing yourself is in no way neglecting others. Contrary, you become more capable of helping them when you are fostering a healthy lifestyle. In a way, putting yourself first is telling everyone around you that they truly are important to you. Making other people a priority in your life just leads to burnout. When you don’t stop to refuel, eventually you stop being able to give any longer. With an adequate amount of energy and positive attitude, every aspect of your life begins to thrive. At work, you become more productive.
Your relationships with your friends and family thrive. Your wellbeing reaches such a peak, that others begin to follow you by example. For this reason, in your community, you are the most important person. Think about it this way: Let’s say you, Dana, decided to start incorporating healthier foods into your diet. Your co-worker, Sarah (there’s always a Sarah), notices that you’ve started to have more vegetables for lunch. Sarah thinks, “Hm. Adding whole foods to my lunch doesn’t seem that difficult, Dana does it every day.” Sarah starts having a serving of vegetables with each meal. She quickly adds exercise to her healthy routine. This significantly boosts Sarah’s mood. At home, Sarah’s brother, Abdullah notices the improvement.
Seeing the changes she’s making he thinks: “Eating well and exercising regularly doesn’t seem that difficult, Sarah is doing it.” Inspired by Sarah, Abdullah starts making changes to his daily routine. Weeks later, Abdullah’s friend, Khaled, follows in his footsteps. Khaled’s wife, Deemah, follows his. Khaled and Deemah maintain this balance and their kids grow up to adopt a similar lifestyle. Boom. Community building. All because YOU decided to put yourself FIRST. Start by scheduling time to do things for your body, mind, and soul. You will inspire others, because change is contagious. Throughout this journey of self-love, you’ll only regret not having started sooner. One by one, we will build a healthier and stronger community. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 63

DISCOVER TAROUT ISLAND A page from Sharqiya’s history By Abdulaziz Al Nemer
Tarout is an island off the coast of Qatif, with a history that goes back thousands of years. The island was named after the Phoenician god Ashtarout, which some of the island inhabitants used to worship in pre-Islamic times. Historically, the island inhabitants work in farming, fishing, and pearling. The island’s main villages are Tarout, Dareen, and Sanabes. The rich history of this island makes it worth a visit. Here we highlight a few places of interest.

Tarout Castle
This should be your first stop in Tarout. The castle sits atop a small hill in the middle of town. The castle itself is currently closed to visitors, but you can still see it up close and walk around it. According to archeological research, the earliest structure in the castle was constructed during the 16th century BC. The castle was used by different kingdoms throughout history. The Portuguese invaders are particularly known for their use of the castle as a defense point during the 1500s AD. The castle was built using sea mud, gypsum, and sea rock.

Hammam Tarout
To the west of the castle you will find a structure known as Hammam Tarout which used to be fed by a natural sulfur spring in the castle. The water was warm during winter, cool during the summer months. The Hammam was used by fishermen from across the gulf. Times to use the Hammam were allocated for both males and females. Currently, the building is closed to visitors, and some say that the spring has dried up.

Mangrove Forests
Mangrove forests used to surround the island, but as time went by, the forests became more vulnerable and faced destruction. Mangroves are important for the health of sea life and to protect the shoreline from erosion. Currently, there are a few remaining mangrove forests in the island, which you can visit. Along the north of the island you will find Al Mourj Mangrove Forest, and to the east, you will find a large forest by the remaining farms in As Sawari.

Dareen Airport
This building was used to store fuel back when the airport was operational.
Some records mention that this is the oldest airport in Saudi Arabia. It was built and used by the British Empire during World War I (1914 AD). The airport used to have a weekly flight to Bahrain. The Saudi government took over the airport in later years and had plans to establish an aviation school at the site, but later switched the location of the school to Jeddah. The airport was abandoned by the year 1939, and most structures in the airport were demolished in 1970. However, there is a remaining structure in the airport which still can be seen if you visit.
The only remaining structure in Dareen’s airport
Mohammed Bin Abdul Wahab Palace
Also known as Dareen Castle, it was constructed in the 16th century AD by the Portuguese, and restored by Mohammed Abdulwahab Al Fayhani in 1885 AD, who used to be one of the richest pearl merchants in the Gulf. Located by the sea in Dareen, the palace used to be composed of two stories and multiple rooms, a warehouse, and lounge areas in addition to yards. The palace is characterized by traditional and Islamic architecture. Similar to Tarout Castle, Dareen Castle was used by different powers across history. The Ottomans used the castle as a residence for their soldiers and as a customs house. Some historians say that the castle is the location of the Dareen Treaty between King Abdulaziz and the British Empire. The palace is largely destroyed, but you can still walk around it and see the remains.

Mark poses in an abandoned Aramco vehicle during a weekend trip to the desert in 1979, Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia.
THE SOLITARY BEDOUIN
A winter’s day in the middle of nowhere By Mark Lowey
It was a Friday in January 1979, my only day off each week as a contractor to Aramco, and I was ready for an adventure. My American friend, Rob, drove from Al Khobar and arrived around 6 a.m. at the door of my single room in the Abqaiq contractors’ bachelor camp. I borrowed a meal chit from another friend for Rob to use, and we headed to the mess hall to enjoy a hearty breakfast of bacon, eggs and pancakes. Pork products, including bacon, are banned in Saudi Arabia, so I was gradually becoming accustomed to the taste of beef bacon. The plan for the day was to venture into the desert in Rob’s two-wheel-drive pickup truck to take photographs with our new cameras, the Olympus model OM-2, which 72 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2018

we had recently purchased in Al Khobar’s electronics souq. The OM-2, one of the first affordable cameras to offer an “automatic” setting with a built-in light meter, was purportedly easier to use than the then standard single lens reflex cameras that were operated manually and required separate light meters.
We were eager to try out this latest technology. We headed west from Abqaiq down the Ain Dar road and turned right at the T-junction near Ain Dar GOSP-1. Ninety minutes into our journey, we reached the Fazran GOSP (Gas Oil Separation Plant) construction site. I commuted
to this site six days per week, so I knew this route well. Fazran is where the pavement ended. We were in the middle of the age-old migration route that pastoral nomads (Bedouins) travelled seasonally to graze their camels and sheep between the Empty Quarter and Kuwait. To continue north, we had a choice of routes: the drillers’ roads or the Bedouin tracks. The compacted claymarl drillers’ roads, built for transporting Aramco equipment between oil wells, were about three truck-widths wide. Straight and rolling, rising and falling with the desert terrain, the clay surface was sometimes eroded by the wind and heavy use resulting in a rippled “washboard” effect. Not only a bone-jarring and noisy ride, it was often difficult to steer at speeds above 20 mph. Smaller sand tracks created by the Bedouins’ vehicles paralleled and diverged
1950 Ford truck; Rob’s truck in the background
from the drilling roads in all directions. What a relief it was to transfer to the relative tranquility of the smooth, soft sand. However, the trade-off was that a two-wheel drive vehicle could easily get stuck in the sand. As a precaution, we deflated the tires slightly so
they would not sink so readily in the dunes. The trick was to maintain speed and not turn the steering wheel suddenly or use the brakes. Once or twice we bogged down and came to a sudden stop, the rear wheels spinning in vain. We had to dig ourselves out with a shovel
Bedouin sand tracks crisscross the desert.

in the mid-1900s, Aramco provided permanent water supplies, often in the form of concrete camel troughs, fed by fresh water from deep wells, which were more easily accessible and were used by the Bedouins. As we were driving later that afternoon, we encountered a handsome, dignified gentleman walking alone in the opposite direction. He was dressed in a navy blue sports jacket over his beige winter thobe and had a leather satchel strapped across his chest. In my journal, I called him the “constable,” because he carried a rifle with bullets and had a very serious demeanor. We stopped, got out of the truck, shook hands with him, and exchanged pleasantries in our limited Arabic. After his response,

and coax the truck onto wood planks placed under the tires. This was hard work and could take hours, always with an eye down the road in search of another vehicle that could help us get moving again. It had been a wet winter with periods of heavy rain. All around us, the land was tinged green with tender shoots of grass and shrubs. There were even small, impermanent lakes where the rain water had collected in low spots. Steadily making our way northward, we reached an area where many Bedouin families had relocated their tents and encampments to graze their goats and 74 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2018
camels. Just over a small hill on the drillers’ road we came across an Aramco vehicle that had been abandoned in the desert decades before. The truck had long been stripped of any removeable parts, and its faded red paint had started to resemble the color of the surrounding desert. Yet, remarkably, the vehicle identification number was still legible. Nearby was an old artesian water well, the type that has helped Bedouins survive for centuries. Salty and brackish, the water was lifted out with buckets. With the expansion of the oil and gas plants
Mark “Abu Jack,” during a visit to a traditional Bedouin gathering north of Fazran, January 2016
there was a long, awkward silence. He looked at me with a stoic, slightly walleyed gaze. None of us really knew what to do next. Finally, I motioned that I would like to photograph him and he agreed. As we were headed in opposite directions, we thanked him and continued on our separate ways, leaving so much unsaid.
A Bedouin walking alone in the desert
Through the ensuing years, I often wondered about this mysterious man on his lonely trek across the desert expanse. What was his story? What tribe did he belong to? When I returned to the kingdom 35 years later, I showed the photo I took of him to dozens of Saudi Bedouin friends who had grown up in that area near Fazran. They, in turn, sent the picture to friends and relatives but, try as they might, we have been unable to identify him. The only clue is that his facial features appear to be those of the Al Marri tribe.
