FROM THE EDITOR

We’ve missed you, Sharqawis! For the lot of you, you’re probably heading back from vacation wondering what you’re going to do now. Well that’s what we are here for my friends. In this issue, we focused on positive influences, in the form of human beings that are an example to us all. Learn from Samia Al Idreesi, who fought for higher education rights for Saudi women in the ‘70s, and won. School’s just around the corner. Calm down Sharqawis, we can hear your groan over the pages of the magazine. To add a little sunshine to your days, we’ve rounded up a list of the best stationery you can get your hands on. To avoid falling into the humdrum of studying, we compiled another list of places perfect for meeting those deadlines and learning those equations. This is the time parents look forward to. We can also hear you, parents, cheering your eminent return to normalcy. But before you do, cherish remaining free time you have with your children by spending time with them, maybe by watching a movie. We’ve recommended an inspirational list to make sure the movies they see have a motive.

THE STRUGGLE FOR WOMEN’S EDUCATION Meet Aramco’s first Saudi women’s training center principal, Samia Al Idreesi. By Noura Al Joaib

Though hired as a translator –the first Saudi translator employed by the company I should add– life had other plans for Al Idreesi. A few years down the line, she was assigned as principal of an allnew training center established by the company. The center trained graduates of middle school and high school to become keypunch operators and typists. In a time where very few Saudi women were hired as professionals to core businesses in the company, those jobs were as high as one could reach on a career ladder. What Al Idreesi saw after that was something else. She saw ambition, determination and a hunger for more. 12 DESTINATION SHARQIYA AUGUST 2017

It’s not often one finds themselves in the presence of a catalyst for change. We can narrow down the odds further when the catalyst is a woman, fighting for equal higher education opportunities to be given to Saudi women, in the late ‘70s. Our protagonist is none other than Samia Al Idreesi, who, upon getting employed by the oil giant Saudi Aramco in 1974, was unaware of the chain of events that would change lives of hundreds of young Saudi women of that time.

Don’t let the safety of your comfort zone prevent you from realizing your ambitions. — Samia Al Idreesi

“Let them at least sit for the TOEFL exam,” she pleaded. After countless of meetings, the top performers from the training center sat for the exam and the results were what Al Idreesi expected: her students had scored higher. With test scores and grades in one hand and uncompromising determination in the other, Al Idreesi had built her case and won.

However, correcting the system was just one aspect; there were still the cultural challenges of the time. Young Saudi women leaving not just Young women with bright minds and a desire to learn was their homes, but country, was a hard pill to swallow. all our protagonist needed to challenge the status-quo. But nothing could deter our protagonist. She knocked on While the training prepared doors and spoke to families. those women to be typists She explained and exclaimed and operators, their male and slowly, but surely, the counterparts were learning number of women armed chemistry, math, physics, with a scholarship and their advanced English; levels of families’ blessing started training where, when passed, to grow. the young men of that time were given the opportunity to Because of one woman’s join a “fast-track” that would belief in the power of make them eligible for a company-backed scholarship. education and the potential of her countrywomen, a generation equipped with the Those scholarships would tools taught both in school and enable the male students to life returned to the Eastern obtain a higher education abroad; a privilege the female Province and became the professional pioneers of our students were denied until Al time. These very women Idreesi fought, relentlessly, became the role models we for her students to be given looked up to growing up. equal opportunity.

After serving the company for 20 years, trying on different hats and continuing to learn something new with each role, Al Idreesi left Saudi Aramco to try something different. Al Idreesi continues to forge her own path, shifting roles seamlessly; from translator and writer to advisor and educator, then later in her life a businesswoman, she is always ready for a challenge. As I sat and listened to her calm voice tell me her life’s journey professionally and personally, I found myself brimming with admiration and awe. While waxing philosophical on changing times and minds, it’s almost impossible to not get inspired. At the end of the day, of the multitude of hats she has worn throughout her life, the most complex, and ultimately most fulfilling role has been being true to the woman that she is: the heart of her home, wife to a husband who has cheered her on every step of the way, mother to children who grew up to be adults that fill her with pride and joy, and have made her a grandmother, and great grandmother, too. Here, before me, is a woman with a life lived. Here before me is a woman who has learned and taught and loved and made it her life to learn, teach, and love. DESTINATIONKSA.COM

The Queen of Resumes Meet the best weapon for your job hunt. By Hajer Al Alwan

Need a resume? Then you need Isra’a Garatli and Resume Reborn, the first Saudi-based resume writing service.

How did you come up with the idea of Resume Reborn? I started working at a young age and was lucky to have a boss, Ahmed Alshargawi, who was patient, supportive and who believed in me. He challenged me to interview tons of applicants for positions I had no idea about. It was intimidating because I had to interview people with many degrees and years of experience. Eventually my email address went viral and people believed I was a recruiter when I really wasn’t. I received many emails with resumes and I started editing to make them more presentable before passing them on to my contacts in contracting companies. Soon after, I received a lot of thank-you emails from the majority of people who ended up getting hired. I did this as a hobby for almost 12 years. Fast forward to 2013, I had just helped edit and submit a resume for a colleague. Within two minutes, I received a phone call that they wanted to hire her 14 DESTINATION SHARQIYA AUGUST 2017

immediately. I wasn’t surprised since she was qualified; however, I was very curious about how they were able to make a decision so quickly. “We’ve never seen a resume so straight to the point, easy to read, professional looking, and so organized, coming from a Saudi candidate.” This comment made me both happy and sad, but it also made me realize: “Oh! This is MY cupcake!”

Your Cupcake?

(She laughs) Back then cupcakes were trending in a big way. And, I had been worrying that my life was going to be me stuck at my cubicle doing routine work forever. When I got that call, a lightbulb flashed and my cupcake was born: Resume Reborn!

What are the services provided by Resume Reborn?

We’re the first Saudi-based company to provide resume writing services. We cater to people of all backgrounds; whether you’re a fresh graduate or experienced professional, applying for university, jobs or otherwise.

Talk about some of the challenges you faced?

It was a challenge whenever I got resumes for backgrounds I wasn’t familiar with, such as marine engineering, zoology or aviation. I had to do plenty DESTINATIONKSA.COM

of research to learn all the right keywords and methods to list relevant information under the experience fields. Time is a challenge too. I started this business independently, and so far, I’m the founder, accountant, communication officer, social media and marketing specialist, resume writer and website developer. I’ve luckily been able to manage everything on my own but obviously it’s extremely time consuming. Still, it never fails to put a smile on my face every time I write a resume and know I’m helping someone get hired for a job they want.

How do you describe your success so far?

We started slow and simple and let the business gradually expand through word of mouth, so being active on social media helped tremendously. Back in 2014 I was interviewed on MBC, which was a huge boost to my reputation, and in 2015 I received the Women Appreciation Month “WAM” award. Meanwhile, I’m regularly asked to speak about resume writing at career fairs, schools and universities.

What are your future plans for Resume Reborn? I plan on hiring a staff of young professionals, add in Arabic writing services and eventually expand into headhunting and recruiting. Email: info@resumereborn.com Web: resumereborn.com ResumeReborn

ISRA’A’S TIPS

ON RESUME WRITING - Keep your resume to one page if you’re a fresh graduate or have minimum experience.

- Ask a friend to proofread your resume for spelling and grammar before submitting it.

- Never exceed two pages, no matter how many years of experience you have. You only need to include what is relevant to the job you’re applying for.

- Research the company you’re interested in and use related keywords that apply to you within your resume. You can find such words in their mission and vision statements or job descriptions.

- Begin your resume with a short summary paragraph instead of an objective. This is your elevator pitch where you talk about your core qualifications, areas of expertise and what you bring to the table.

- Personal information should only be your name, city, country, email address and one phone number. Don’t include irrelevant information such as marital status, government ID or the number of your children.

- Recruiters spend no more than 20 seconds looking at a resume, so make those seconds count by writing a compelling summary that grabs their attention.

- There is no right or wrong way to write a resume; it’s all about how you want to represent yourself on paper. That said, there are best practices, tips and tricks (like this list) to help your resume pass instead of get tossed.

- Avoid using colors and funky fonts! Keep it easy to read.

NERD PRIDE Get inspired to do whatever you put your mind to. By Hajer Al Alwan

18 DESTINATION SHARQIYA AUGUST 2017

STAFF PHOTO/ALZAHRA ALDAWOOD

S P E C I A L F E AT U R E

Eventually, after doing a lot of research and being asked for advice by lots of students, I realized I needed to write a book about it. Around the same time, I was working with my work coach, Scott, and he kept telling me I needed to focus my efforts instead of work on a hundred things at once. So, he helped me cut everything else and focus on writing.

Have you always been into writing?

I had a blog a while back, wrote articles and even published some of them. It helped me improve my style and learn from my mistakes. Then, in early 2016, I published my second book, “Bobo Doll”.

So, were you a dafoor yourself? work there as a change management consultant.

We caught up with author Mohammed Al Hussain to talk about his books and his life as a dafoor (slang term for being academically proficient in school; think “nerd”).

Tell us about yourself.

After earning a degree in accounting, a master’s degree from the University of Chicago and an MBA from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, I joined Saudi Aramco in 2005 and currently

I hate having any downtime, so I’m always trying new things. I tried out making mobile apps, then got into writing for a while and ended up publishing two books. Oh, by the way, I’m really good at bowling too!

Where did the idea for this book come from?

Three years ago, I was having a picnic with a group of young students in Chicago, and they wanted me to give them a lecture about the habits of being a dafoor. Their reaction was extremely enthusiastic and I started sharing my thoughts on the topic with more people back home.

Yes, definitely. My mother was illiterate, so she emphasized to me how important education was and encouraged me by saying how good a student I was. Thanks to her support, I was always a high honor student both in my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.

How can you describe your experience at publishing your first book?

It felt like giving birth to my own baby! It was a difficult journey because publishers weren’t interested in my first book, so I had to self-publish. I met with people in Jarir and others that had published books before to learn the whole process, but it was like driving in a thick fog. You don’t see DESTINATIONKSA.COM

19

more than 20 meters ahead of you, but you drive anyway! With my second book, however, publishers started approaching me to work with them. I’m not going to lie: it felt good.

What tips on publishing can you share with aspiring writers? Well, If you’re doing fiction and you know the basic techniques of writing, you should just start writing immediately.

But, if you’re working on non-fiction, then you need to know your topic and do lots of research. I’ve been a dafoor for 24 years but never felt credible to write about it until I read a dozen books about it and made sure I had a source for every fact I stated.

Any tips to our readers who are dafoor-wannabes? Read my book!

Also, never make excuses. Everyone can have a bad teacher, boring curriculum or unsupportive family. It’s easy to be a lazy or bad student, but a real dafoor will focus on the solutions, not the problems. When you make that commitment to stop complaining and just focus on what you can do to be better, that’ll make all the difference.

What are your future plans?

Right now, I’m working on publishing the English version of my book. It’s already been translated by a British company and will soon be available in stores. It’s also being developed into an audiobook. 20 DESTINATION SHARQIYA AUGUST 2017

How Can I Become a Dafoor? This Arabic book is basically a summary of Mohammed’s 24 years of experience in classrooms. After reading many books about the subject, and lecturing lots of people about it; he decided to write a book about it.

Bobo Doll This Arabic book is a collection of Mohammed’s articles contemplating life, taking time to appreciate the little details and sharing true stories from his experiences. Find his books at Jarir and Virgin.

Heroism 101 Students majoring in being awesome to their communities. By Lujain Al Heraiqy

When Al Othman began his volunteering activities, his main focus was to change the community surrounding him for the better, but little did he realize how much it would change him to be a better person as well.

Age: 22

University: King Fahad University of Petroleum and Minerals Occupation: Mechanical Engineering 22 DESTINATION SHARQIYA AUGUST 2017

Whenever in doubt about how much one person can accomplish, Al Othman always falls back on his own credo of sorts: “If one person can affect 10 people, those 10 will affect 100, and those 100 will affect 1,000 and those 1,000 will affect a whole community.”

Fares Al Othman

During his more than 800 hours of volunteering work, the most inspiring person Al Othman encountered in this journey was a nine-year-old cancer patient who told him, “I thank God that all I have is cancer, which has a treatment, unlike being blind or deaf. I thank God I have hands to hold things and feet to walk with.”

When Al Darea began volunteering as a student, he learned that not only was he able to be more sociable and brave enough to speak in front of large audiences, he also discovered he could affect the lives of those around them, or even save them.

Saleh Al Darea Age: 23

University: Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal University Occupation: Traffic Engineering

This journey started with being a lifeguard at Half Moon Beach, hence saving lives. Then he started volunteering at many more events, including iftar tents, zakat-related collections and even his university’s support campaign for Hajj. Through volunteering, not only did Al Darea learn about better time management and getting over his fear of taking risks, he also learned about patience, persistence and how to always keep a smile on your face and an open mind in your head. Al Darea’s new-found volunteering spirit has even made him a better learner. He’s had several experiences where he’s gotten involved in the aftermaths of traffic accidents to aid the victims and just be there for them until help arrived. Working on a degree in traffic engineering, such experiences have made what he’s learning a personal mission as well as an academic one. DESTINATIONKSA.COM

Al Ibrahim is a passionate volunteer and firmly believes that keeping up with schoolwork brings her a step closer to serving her community later with all that knowledge. Still, she knows that knowledge is nothing without the experience that comes from directly serving the community personally. Al Ibrahim has led and managed many events for raising awareness of key issues, helping the youth and fundraising for several causes. It wasn’t easy to do, though. She constantly faced criticism about her age and being told she was too young to really help the community. Still, she persevered and never wavered from her path. Al Ibrahim has also mentored volunteering groups, held a summer course for refugee kids in Turkey and fundraised to support their education and even volunteered for a project in Boston, Massachusetts that provides prisoners with books donated by the community.

She won Best Arab Volunteer 2013 in Qatar by the Arab Federation for Voluntary Activities as well as earned an award for Best Volunteering Project in a contest arranged by the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture in Dhahran.

Volunteering since he was ten years old, Al Rotoue’s been doing it for so long that it’s just a part of him. It’s never been about the awards or the accolades, but rather simply about the smiles he gets to put on every person he works with, from the elderly or the less fortunate to the kids diagnosed with cancer or autism. Bringing happiness and joy to them is the only thing he’s ever wanted to achieve. Studying business administration for his major, Al Rotoue definitely sees a big impact on his school performance thanks to his volunteering past. Movies with Motives Movies with positive role models for your children. By Areeb Al Shathri

“Up”

The heartwarming tale of an old man, a little boy, a dog and balloons is all you need for a good family movie night. This classic odd couple story has the ability to teach your kid lessons that they'll appreciate later on.

DUDETTES

“E.T.”

This timeless Steven Spielberg movie features a group of kids banding together to make sure that "E.T. go home." It's an enduring tale of friendship with enough action to keep you engaged and on the edge of your seat.

“Mulan”

The story of a young woman who assumes a male identity to fight for father, her family's honor and her country. It'll teach your child, especially your daughter, that they can fight back too.

30 DESTINATION SHARQIYA AUGUST 2017

“Bilal”

Bilal is based on the story of Bilal ibn Rabah. When making the film, the director's purpose was to provide Arab children with a familiar hero that they could relate to. Ayman Jamal's movie aims to replace the typical default

heroes for kids, such as Superman or Spiderman, with figures such as Bilal ibn Rabah who actually overcame many obstacles to become one of Islam's greatest warriors and also became the first muezzin in Islam.

“A Little Princess” After having to transfer from India to England, daddy's little princess is sent to live in a girls’ home. The story teaches the importance of defiance, compassion and imagination.

Honorable Mentions “How to Train Your Dragon”

“To Kill a Mockingbird”

“Hugo”

“Harry Potter”

It’s the story of an orphan who discovers he's a wizard and is immediately drawn into an entirely new universe where the impossible is suddenly possible. It's a tale about friendship, morality and bravery.

“Moana”

Moana is the tale of a girl who sets out on an adventure to save her family. The visually stunning movie is an animation and musical masterpiece. It’ll make the whole family laugh.

“Billy Elliot”

It’s a beautiful coming-of-age tale. This movie teaches that you don't have to stick to the status quo; that you too can -figuratively- be a little British boy dancing your way through life's less than pretty streets.

“The Indian in the Cupboard”.

“Wadjda”

This film follows a fiercely independent little Saudi girl who just wants to ride her bike. A film for the whole family, each member may walk away with a different, but important, lesson. DESTINATIONKSA.COM

Hala Alyan

Laced with poetic language and poignant instances of life, “Salt Houses” by award-winning Palestinian American novelist and clinical psychologist Hala Alyan does great service to the narrative of displaced families and the notion of belonging. the successive generations of the Yacoub family, ending with Manar, Salma’s great granddaughter who is visiting Jaffa in 2014 to reconnect with her family’s history and heritage. In between the reader becomes intimate with the rest of the Yacoubs and the key moments in their life that define them. What’s notable about “Salt Houses” is Alyan’s portrayal of how even wealthy and prosperous families are deeply affected by war and its disruptive nature. This is not a story of poverty, tents and deprivation. It’s a story that shows that privelege does not discount the turmoil of loss. It’s a story that’s easy to get lost in because the love, loss and hope felt by the characters is all too real. And above all, when you filter out the sociopolitical conditions you’re left with raw human emotions that we all taste in life. Cherishing family above all else is a dominant theme in Alyan’s poetic novel. Because of war and the resulting ripples, the characters are often faced with situations that make them stand back and appreciate the family they have left, while remembering those they lost. Like all great literary stories, this one houses a secret too - a bundle of letters that were never sent. This is a book that will challenge you as a reader and also give you a story to remember.

HOLE IN THE WALL We all know they serve the best food in town. By Alzahra Al Dawood and Noura Al Joaib

When we decided to do a feature on the best bufiyah sandwiches in town, we got weird looks from the rest of the team. For those who don’t know what a bufiyah is, it’s colloquial for cafeteria. Derived from buffet (we assume), they are tiny food counters scattered everywhere and open around the clock. Admittedly, like any “hole in the wall”, they get a bad rep. Usually located near gas stations or in dingy back allies, this is clearly one of those “there’s more than meets the eye” situations. So sit back, relax, take our word for it and try these super yummy budgetfriendly sandwiches:

DINING AROUND TOWN

LOVELY LUNCHBOXES How to keep lunch simple, nutritious and exciting.

Wraps

Keep containers full of chopped fruit in the fridge so you can pack up handfuls as needed (try to pack at least two portions). Mix together a big box of popcorn, raisins, dried cranberries and small crackers to make a trail-mix you can quickly pop into small bags throughout the week. Buy trays of yogurts (preferably plain) to put into the lunchbox last minute.

These are an ideal alternative to sandwiches and can be easily customized to suit everyone. Try hummus, cucumber and zaatar in a wholegrain wrap, or turkey, grated cheese and dill pickles in a spinach wrap.

Leftovers

Every lunch doesn't need to be made from scratch. Shop smart and your lunchboxes can still be super nutritious, without any preparation from

you. Buy mana’eesh or fatayer with a range of toppings and fillings or pick up savory croissants from your neighborhood bakery.

Plan a meal the day before so that the leftovers work for next day’s lunch. Pasta is perfect: add sauce for dinner and save some pasta to make a salad for the next day. Even leftover kebabs with some flatbread and pickles can make a fantastic quick lunch.

DIY Tins Keep a range of tins at hand: sweetcorn, white beans, fool medames, beetroot and tuna - you can quickly mix up salads according to everyone’s tastes by tossing in herbs, mayonnais or lemon juice to add extra flavor.

Save yourself some of the hard work and send everyone off with ingredients to assemble themselves. Lunchables: crackers, turkey ham, cheese and a tomato dip sauce. Tacos: mini tortilla wraps, grated cheese and a small container of chilicon-carne.

MOM’S FAVORITE:

kidney beans, white beans, beetroot and mackerel fillets with parsley, olive oil and lemon juice dressing. Just stir and go!

Spread Awareness, Not Disease

Living in a big city means we’re sometimes at risk of getting exposed to infectious diseases, especially if we don’t follow health protocols. Thankfully, there’s a strong campaign that’s championing the health cause and spreading awareness everywhere.

the way for a healthier Saudi Arabia. The two organizations are collaborating on raising health awareness in the Saudi community. They're also working hard to develop the means to address the issues and make Saudi Arabia a healthier place to live in. The MoU actually supports the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan in the region, a plan that calls for growing Unilever’s business while reducing its environmental footprint. It’s also a way to enhance the company’s positive social impact.

APPROACHING HYGIENE One of the approaches under the MoU is to design training materials for a program that targets infectious diseases in public hospitals. The Saudi Ministry of Health also plans on actively endorsing a digital hand hygiene campaign developed by Lifebuoy. They also plan on supporting a large campaign to improve the health and well being of the pilgrims coming to Saudi Arabia’s holy cities. Another great aspect of the partnership is their approach to target residents and the community directly. The Lifebuoy team will be joined by representatives from the Ministry of Health on trips to schools, hospitals and malls where they will deliver the message of health and hygiene to the community.

Isam Badwailan, the brand protection director at Binzagr Unilever Limited and Lifebuoy commented on the significance of the campaign, “Positively impacting the health and well-being of our people in built into our corporate DNA. It is a formal part of the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan, and also a key element of the Lifebuoy brand identity. We are delighted to have achieved the support of the Saudi Ministry of Health in taking our campaigns on health and the importance of hand-washing in stemming the spread of diseases, to wider audiences Kingdom-wide.” In 2015, Binzagr Unilever won the King Khalid Award for Sustainability Initiatives, and earlier this year they received the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Excellence Award. DIY Gym How to stay fit during the school semester.

64 DESTINATION SHARQIYA AUGUST 2017

Location Location Location Dumbbells It’s important that your workout space is a refuge from all the hectic distractions of your home or college. Make a dedicated space, roll out the yoga mat, blast your favorite workout music and follow the next few tips depending on what exercises you want to focus on.

A set of dumbbells should be part of every home gym because you can train all your body muscles using them. At the very least get three weights you’ll use the most, like the 5, 10 and 15 lb ones, but I recommend just getting a full set of good quality dumbbells.

STAFF PHOTO/ALZAHRA AL DAWOOD

Students love to come up with excuses for not working out, but the big one is usually how much it costs to join a gym. Listen: It's not about which gym you go to or which clothes or shoes you get, it’s all about your motivation, your goals and how much you care about your health. It’s not about the outside, it's about the inside. And to prove that to you, let’s see how we can very inexpensively set up your own gym.

Don’t Skip the Cardio

Make sure to develop a cardio circuit where you move from skipping to jumping jacks to aerobic steppers when you exercise. On a daily basis, you can use the hallways in your college or work to walk, and make sure to always use the stairs. Move more and keep that heart rate up!

Resistance Bands

What I love about resistance bands is that they are

inexpensive and versatile, useful for beginners or experts. They come in a variety of resistances, including light, medium and heavy, and you can even use multiple bands at once to increase the challenge. Strap it to a door, table or bench, and you’ve got yourself a cheaper universal machine with the same results! You can do pull-downs, standing chest presses, squats and shoulderrelated exercises.

Stability Ball

Stability balls are light and more than just fun to bounce on; they're a great way to target your lower body, upper body, abs and core. YouTube has a ton of easy to learn exercises that utilize stability balls, so check there for a good routine. You can substitute dumbbells with sand-filled water bottles.

Resistance Is Not Futile Work your whole body with TRX.

STAFF PHOTO/ALZAHRA AL DAWOOD

The class can be done anywhere you can anchor the suspension bands and belts, so many gyms now dedicate spaces with anchor points for group training in TRX. An adjustable nylon resistance band is used that has an anchor point on one end and hand grips or foot support on the other.

The birth of Total Resistance eXercise (TRX) training lies with the U.S. Navy’s “Sea, Air and Land” (SEAL) teams, when they needed to exercise but were lacking adequate time, space and equipment. To solve this problem, they developed a series of functional exercises by using just the belts of their parachutes. The practice of TRX training is based primarily on exercises in suspension, where the

practitioner does a sequence of exercises using belts or ropes while different parts of their body are on the floor. The difference between TRX and other strength training genres is that the practitioners here can focus more in developing their core body strength and stability. Also, by taking advantage of your own weight, it’s possible to exercise almost every muscle of the body.

Benefits of Suspension Training • Allows you to train the whole body • Improves flexibility

• Reduces risk of injury • Reduces potential for lower-back pain

SAUDI ARABIA’S Oldest Cities that are Still Inhabited The 2017 Arab Capital of Tourism By Mohammed Mirza

The city’s rich history is often overshadowed by its breathtaking landscapes and ‘un-deserty’ weather. Alongside Makkah, Taif was a major pilgrimage center in the preIslamic era. The entire city used to be walled and at that time just like today, Taif was known for being agriculturally rich. A famous historic fair called Souq Okaz took place annually in the northern part of Taif. The fair saw traders coming in from all around the peninsula trading bedouin crafts such as rugs, tents, 74 DESTINATION SHARQIYA AUGUST 2017

agricultural produce, pottery, jewelry, perfumes, and various spices. The spectacle also saw renowned poets converging

here to display their talents. In recent years the Saudi government has restarted the festivities of Souq Okaz.

2. DUMAT AL JANDAL Located in the northern part of Saudi Arabia, this city is referred to in early texts as Adummatu by the Assyrians; they described it as the capital of an Arab Kingdom. Dumat Al Jandal is perhaps most famous for being the capital of five famous Arab queens close to 3,000 years ago.

Visitors to the city today can stroll through an ancient part called Al Der District that dates back to the mid-Islamic era. This district was actually built upon ruins of other dwellings that are believed to be from over two millennia ago.

Standing on the incense route, frankincense, myrrh, spices, precious stones, pearls, silk, fine textiles, animal skins and gold all passed through Dumat Al Jandal. At its peak, Dumat Al Jandal was one of the most important trading cities in Northern Arabia.

3. JEDDAH There are various opinions on when the city was first inhabited; some claim it to be one of the earliest in the world as it is customarily associated to be the place where Hawa (wife of Adam) is believed to have been buried. Others believe that the city was inhabited after the collapse of the Marib dam in Yemen around 2,100 years ago and then there are others that trace its origins to the Stone Age. Nevertheless, it was a hamlet at most and rose to prominence only after entering the fold of Islam. Caliph Uthman turned the hamlet into a port city and, throughout its history, it served as a port of arrival for the majority of pilgrims coming to the Holy Cities. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 75

4. MAKKAH Muslims believe that Makkah was first settled by Prophet Ismail, his descendants and tribes from Yemen. The Kaaba was a major place of worship even in pre-Islamic times. After the birth of Islam and its rapid spread, the number of pilgrims arriving in Makkah surged. Makkah never became the capital of any Islamic Kingdom or Caliphate, but the rulers under whose realm Makkah existed during various periods contributed generously to the upkeep of the Grand Mosque and the city.

5. TAYMA Tayma was famous during the Iron Age, according to Assyrian texts dating back to around 2,800 years ago. It was once the home of the Babylonian King Nabonidus. The modern town is built on top of about one-third of an ancient settlement, which has an estimated area of 950 hectares. Historic walls stand as a reminder of the city’s age.

6. MADINAH

After the arrival of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) Madinah saw what is believed to be one of the earliest ever documented constitutions, that is now known as the constitution of Madinah. It’s from Madinah that Islam spread from the borders of China in the east to the Atlantic Ocean in the west. 76 DESTINATION SHARQIYA AUGUST 2017

SOURCE PHOTO / OUR ANCIENT WORLD

Formerly known as Yathrib, the city’s history dates back to more than 2,600 years. It was first inhabited by Jewish and Arab tribes.

7. UNAIZAH Dating back to the pre-Islamic era, Unaizah was mentioned in numerous Arabian poems including those of celebrated Arabian poet Imru Al Qais. After the arrival of Islam, it acted as a stopping point for pilgrims coming to Makkah from Mesopotamia and Persia. Its beautifully rich architecture and warm hospitality of its people has left western travelers baffled. The famed traveler Amin Al Rihani even went so far as to call it the “Paris of Najd.”

8. TARUT ISLAND

Tarut Island passed into the hands of multiple rulers including the Portuguese. A fort which is believed to be made by the Portuguese still stands on the island as its major attraction.

Shrouded in mystery, the historic island continues to intrigue visitors even after close to 7,000 years of existence, making it one of the oldest cities not only in Arabia but in the entire world as well. Tarut Island was at the heart of the Dilmun Kingdom and played a crucial role in maritime trade within the Arabian Gulf.

9. NAJRAN The mysterious city of Ukhdood is over 2,500 years old. The city once housed grandiose palaces and was a major trading hub. It’s believed to be the town that is referred to in Surah Al Burooj which states that residents of a town were cursed as they were bystanders while true believers were being thrown into a fiery trench. A LOTTA FALAFEL

Niche entry: Ahud Cafeteria By Sally Bosson

Oh how the times have changed. I’d since then become vegetarian (or pescatarian if you’re into labels) and I’ve noticed that it’s very difficult to find quick and easy takeaway food. Remembering Mo’s falafel, I decided to begin the Great Falafel Hunt, starting with a couple of restaurants by our house. Unfortunately, they were always too dry, too oily or just plain old boring. Finally, my search ended at a little hidden gem of a place: Ahud Cafeteria in A’ali. I won’t lie, the rest of their food is average, cafeteria food. My friend asked for a 78 DESTINATION SHARQIYA AUGUST 2017

wiches falafel sand o = SR 7 Meal for Tw

But! Their falafel is the best falafel I have ever eaten. Crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside, delicately flavored and so perfectly complemented by whatever the hot sauce is that they use. They aren’t heavy on the oil either which makes a huge difference to the flavor. Super cheap, so you really have nothing to lose by trying it out. I’ve personally raved about them to just about everybody, to the point of forcing them upon friends when they visit the house, forcing them upon colleagues at work…I’m sure you get the picture. The guys who work there are friendly, speak a little bit of English but better Arabic and will greet you with a smile every time, especially when you keep coming back!

Gufool is one of Bahrain’s

There are spice vendors so pick up some dried limes for your tea, not to mention the oldest aloo basheer shop where I insist you get samboosa, aloo, and nakhi before lunch at Mandali’s Kebab Restaurant. Around for three decades, it's filled with pictures of old friends and costumers, making it a special fixture of the community.

I also recommend getting a cone of saffron ice cream from Nasif, a restaurant established in the thirties, or even a simple cup of red tea at Haji’s café.
