Highlighting Awesome Individuals Sharqiya’s running hero: Somaya Al Ghazali. By Hajer Al Alwan
Currently studying English Literature at King Faisal University, Somaya Al Ghazali juggles her time between being a student, working her graphic design job, doing social work and running every single day. Back in 2009, Al Ghazali’s mother pushed her to go out walking or running every day for the sole purpose of being active. “At first, I did it and I didn’t know why,” said

Somaya Al Ghazali runs an average of 5-10 kilometers every day after an hour of stretching and yoga practice. In the past three years, she has run more than 4,000 kilometers and she hopes to add another 1,200 to that by end of the year.
know she was brave enough to do and quit her job. “I started working on my wellbeing more and going for walks every day. Eventually, this became the focus of my life,” said Al Ghazali. At first it was difficult for her. She could barely run for three minutes without getting exhausted, and she only went running at Corniche. But, with each day the habit grew on her and she always made time for it. In 2013, her mother passed away and it was a very difficult time for Al Ghazali. Running every day helped her pick herself up and eventually move on. As she got more and more committed to the lifestyle, she started walking in the streets and used walking as her main means of transportation. She admits that sometimes she’d even walk to work.
“If I have to give one reason to why I do it, it’d be that that it brings me peace of mind,” shared Al Ghazali. “It’s also made me a calmer and more in-control as a person.” When we asked Al Ghazali about the difficulties she faced while running in her abaya, and doing something that is not commonly done by women in public areas, she said that it was all in our heads, and that she simply looked at it as a challenge that she couldn’t help but overcome. Somaya Al Ghazali has been working with Ruqi Society’s photography team. The program prepares girls for the future by honing their various talents and passions and teaching them how they can use their skills to give back to the community. soalghazali

While also introducing the third brand of Ascott international, Somerset, Spectrums is expecting yet another grand opening in 2018.

Owned by Abdul Samad Al Qurashi Group, Adel Kaki, the Global Investor Company, Essam Al Tayyar and Khalid Al Jehani, United Spectrums’ mission is to close and bridge the existing gap within international and local standards of furnished apartments. “We will not stop at this level,” claims Al Tayyar. “We are further introducing a local concept managed by Ascott international with the flagship brand of Spectrums Residence set to open in April at Prince Sultan Road, offering 69 serviced apartments with lavish essential facilities.” With the market rapidly expanding, Spectrums success foretells expansion and further development, possible penetrating different disciplines within the tourism, hospitality, and residential industry. Yet achieving this target couldn’t have been made without the support of Prince Sultan bin Salman, the head of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage, and the Western Province team headed by Mohamad El Amri.

WHO’S WHO
Watch out glass ceilings, Hind Al Zahid is coming for you. By Arwa Al Mousa
16 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JULY 2017
STAFF PHOTO/ALZAHRA ALDAWOOD
SKY’S THE LIMIT
Sharqiya’s renowned businesswoman Hind Al Zahid is proof that there isn’t a job too big for a woman. Hired as an executive director, Hind manages King Fahd International Airport, the largest airport in the world by size.
We spoke to Hind Al Zahid, the first Saudi woman to work as an executive director and member of Dammam Airports, about her personal life, professional journey, future goals and the position of women in the Saudi workforce.
Tell us about yourself.
I’m a wife, mother of two and a businesswoman. Beside my work as an executive director and member of Dammam Airports, I’m the head of the Businesswomen Center in The Eastern Province Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EPCCI), an advisory member in the King Faisal University and Imam ibn Abdulrahman University advisory boards, a Steering Committee member for Women’s Employment and the co-founder of Zoha Arabia Co., a retail company based in Khobar. I hold a BA in English literature from Imam ibn Abdulrahman University and an MBA from Gulf University in Bahrain.
What is the biggest obstacle facing Saudi women in labor?
It’s the unequal opportunities in the workplace, also known as the “glass-ceiling” effect, which prevents women from obtaining promotions and upper-level positions. This is not an institutional problem because, as of 2006, the law had been very clear in allowing equal opportunities. However, it’s the stereotypic assumptions that need to change; the ones
that perceive women as unfit for leadership roles. My mission is to change that. I aim to empower women and to give them those opportunities.
What could be done to solve this issue?
I believe in implementing a top-down approach which simply puts women in places of power to press for change that empower women and advance their rights. Thankfully, our country is extremely supportive. Vision 2030 gives a significant emphasis to the Saudi woman and believe in her abilities and her leading role in developmental changes. On a larger scale, I strongly believe in establishing specialized institutions that ensure decent work opportunities for women and protect their rights as workers. I hope that one day we can establish a Ministry of Women and Family Affairs or a Supreme Council for Women.
What do you think of the current status and conditions of Saudi working women?
There’s no doubt that it has improved a lot and I’m very proud to have witnessed and even been part of some of these changes. In my job with EPCCI, we were involved in changing many of the labor laws. For instance: previously, the law required women business owners to always have a male manager running things. Now, women can solely DESTINATIONKSA.COM

and completely run their own business. Also, we helped in granting official beauty salons licenses where previously no such license existed; instead they had been operating under tailoring licenses. Official licensing is important to increase the quality of the offered services, promote healthy competition and allow better monitoring. better
monitoring.
What’s the secret to your success?
Knowing my mission in life: Women empowerment. Every one of us has our own mission. Everyone is put on earth to deliver a message and fulfill a purpose. Know what it is that wakes you up excited to start the day every morning and pursue it unwaveringly.
What helps you recharge outside of work?
I slow down, stay in the moment and enjoy the simple things in life, like the taste of a good cup of coffee or the smell of a fragrant flower. I also have an early morning ritual where I wake up at 5 a.m. every day and walk for an hour. This clears my mind and sets me up for the rest of the day.
Can women balance between life and work?
Of course they can but this will require some effort. I always put my family first. I dedicate my weekends to my family and never attend events, weddings or gatherings. On weekdays, I have two fixed hours (from 4 to 6 p.m.) during which I make sure to spend some quality time with my two kids. 18 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JULY 2017

DREAM A LITTLE DREAM OF YOU Budoor Shadawi shares her dream social network. By Hajer Al Alwan
Tell us about yourself.
I was born and raised in Khobar. I’m 35, going on 20! I’m also a certified skydiver, I’ve hiked two of the seven summits, I love kayaking and I love trying out anything new that would give me a rush of excitement. I did my bachelors in Montreal, Canada majoring in MIS and Marketing, then I finished my MBA in Boston. When I came back, I worked for my family’s business for a while, then I went to work in Microsoft for a couple of years. I’m currently back working in my family’s business running their marketing department, but the big thing on my plate is that I’m launching a social network Dream@ soon.
What is the idea of Dream@?
Dream@ is a free social networking platform that encourages people to live more 20 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JULY 2017
fulfilled lives. The idea behind Dream@ is to live in the now and focus on doing what we love every day.
How did you come up with the idea?
Even though small and passionate communities in different areas of interest are growing, it feels like the attitude of pursuing your dreams is still deficient in this region. I came up with Dream@ as a way to introduce this whole mentality of taking control of your destiny, becoming more active and giving your life an even richer meaning outside of just amassing material things.
How does it work?
If Facebook and Pinterest got married, Dream@ would be their love child. There are lots of social networks with the same idea out there, but the difference between them and Dream@ is that
Dream@ is bilingual (English and Arabic).
STAFF PHOTO/HAJER ALALWAN
Also, while other social networks tell you what to do and stop there, Dream@ goes the extra mile and assists you in achieving your dreams. We’re like a middle person between the dreamers and the dream makers, and that’s where our value-added services come in. So, if someone says “I want to climb a mountain” and clicks “Seek Help”, we give them different proposals from our dream makers/ partners based on the specifics they provide. It’ll begin with nine categories when it launches, with more planned in the future. These include social responsibility and community outreach, self-improvement, learning languages, honing skills and even adventurous activities. We’ll also feature subject experts in short interviews on the website. DESTINATIONKSA.COM

What do you attribute your success to? A passion for living and surrounding myself with inspiring people. Everyone should make a conscious decision to surround themselves with people that push them to do more instead of bring them down. I remember being a couch potato in middle school. One of my closest friends since then, Mona Shahab, came up to me and told me that she’d always wanted to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. She planted the seed in my head, and even though I’d never stepped in a gym before then, I trained heavily just to go on that trip. I struggled, fainted twice on the climb, got altitude sickness and

wished the whole thing would be over, but the satisfaction I felt once I got off the mountain made it all worthwhile. If it wasn’t for Mona, I wouldn’t have gone and had this experience. And because of it, even though it’s tough, I still go five to six days a week to exercise and train. There’s so much to see in life and I want to be around for as long as possible to experience it all!
What advice can you give to our readers on fulfilling their dreams? Visiting the Mongolian Kazakh Eagle Hunters during a trip with Husaak Adventures.
Don’t wait till tomorrow or “that one day” to pursue your dream. Every tomorrow will just become another tomorrow until you run out of them. Why wait? I encourage you to sit down and write out the things you want to do, why you want to do them and why you haven’t done them yet. So often we never pursue our dreams, big or small because we never simply sat down and said, “I’m doing this right now!”

BETTER RELATIONSHIPS, ONE GAME AT A TIME They create the games you love. Rock.Paper.Scissor was founded in 2015 by Rola Badkook and Rafah Sahab. We spoke to the duo to know more about the company that’s changing the way people interact and have fun.
What’s the idea behind Rock.Paper.Scissor?
Our ambition is to improve relationships, one game at a time. We strongly believe that playing games has the power to spark constructive and deep conversations and to cultivate pure joy and laughter amongst people. Our concept is all about that connection.
What inspired you to start Rock.Paper.Scissor?
Rock.Paper.Scissors started as a service based business. We began by inviting mothers and daughters for play dates. In April 2015 we were invited to the Idea Conference by the LEGO Foundation in Denmark. It was an inspiring event that brought together brilliant minds and experts from around the world to engage and think about how playful learning can be made more accessible. What do you think about the tabletop games trend that’s happening in Saudi?
GAMES FOR THE SUMMER Tar Min Agly A quick and easy game that’ll make everyone laugh while trying to forget common words we always forget. Hakawi Al Safar A game that can be played anywhere. There are four different games within Hakawi Al Safar that will challenge your imagination.
Bedon Kalam This game comes in three editions; rasm and movies and music. Adults and kids both will have a fun time trying to enact what’s on the card. Hakawi This is a cool game that’ll encourage your gathering to discuss many different topics.
We are happy that the game making industry is starting to flourish, until recently we were just consumers. When we released Eid Carnival, the market didn’t have any games except Saudi Deal. It is great because, according to research, the MENA region is the second highest spender in the world with little contribution in the gaming industry.
What are your upcoming projects?
We are working on a very exciting educational game that aims to broaden children’s perspective and encourage them to approach the world with more curiosity and love instead of fear and hate. Game of Thrones or Die
Gather around citizens of Westeros, for winter is here By Areeb Al Shathri
July 12 marks the day that one of the greatest shows, (just a fact, not opinion), will return to our screens. The newest season of “Game of Thrones” GoT promises to be one of the most intense ones yet. With only two more seasons to go, fans of the books and series are awaiting the premiere with bated breaths. When I say “fans” I mean us. By us, I mean me. With its intricate plots, bevy of characters and its constant need to surprise you, GoT is best watched with a group. And like everything worth 30 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JULY 2017
doing, a GoT viewing party must be done right, or not done at all. It's a big deal, my friends, so for this to work we need to establish a few rules.
Game of Thrones merch is a must! Cushions, mugs and sigil flags - keep them ready.
RULES OF GOT NIGHT
1. Everyone must be settled and ready before the HBO logo appears. 2. You must NOT, I repeat, must not skip or fast-forward the show’s opening credits. -Singing along is not required, though highly recommended. 3. The person most
knowledgeable about GoT (GoT Captain) gets control of the remote. Why? Because when things get confusing for someone, and it will, the captain can pause, explain, and then continue. If the question does not require explanation, the captain may choose to ignore it. This guarantees that everyone is well informed and on the same page.
4. There is no such thing as
“postponing” a GoT viewing party. If you don’t watch it now, it’s your fault. There will be no spoilers ruining the show for anyone.
5. If someone has already watched the episode, they may not attend GoT Night. Part of
the fun is the communal feeling of “What is going to happen?” And besides, no one likes a smarty-pants.
6. Decorate or dress up! GoT is like sports. There are many teams fighting for the same spot. The champion will be awarded a prize, or in our case, a very uncomfortable iron throne. The battles/matches are epic and unpredictable. And, of course, fans of the different teams support them feverishly. I, for one, am team Tyrion all the way.
A friend told me that her mother and friends also have their own GoT night. Each woman rocks a t-shirt with her favorite character’s picture every week. We salute you Aunt Amal and her friends! It’s a lot easier than it sounds. A GoT night is when a group of friends gather and share in a common interest. Some people gather to play video games, some to have beauty days, and others to watch beloved characters get slaughtered on a weekly basis. The joy is in the communal experience of being horrified together. Stay tuned for Season 7 this month!

This series has been going on for twenty years on a daily basis! Impossible to describe but it’s incredible just for the sheer intricacy of the plot threads that weave in and out, with clues and hints dropped in that don’t pay off until several years later. 34 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JULY 2017

WHAT TO BINGE-WATCH?
It's about clones, corporations and conspiracies. Watching the lead actress play a dozen characters, each with unique personalities is just awe-inspiring. Darkly sci-fi with welcome respites of comic relief, now’s the time to binge this because the final season is airing right now!
Halt and Catch Fire What started as a not-so-stellar Mad Men style show set within the computer industry of the 80s bravely redirected to focus on the two lead women as they start a gaming company. Character development is top notch and once you get past the first season, the narrative just gets you in its grips and never let’s go. Fourth and final season of this underrated show is slated for later this year.

Gowns and Suits and Jeans, Oh My! Our coverage of the recent Arab Fashion Week By Dalia Darweesh
Founded in 2014, Arab Fashion Week is an annual fashion show held in Dubai, hosted by The Arab Fashion Council. What makes this show especially impressive is that it’s now considered one of the five most important fashion shows in the world and has been added to the International Fashion Week calendar right alongside New York, London, Milan and Paris. Following that international lineup, Dubai’s edition makes sure to not focus solely on designers in the Arab world. This year, for example, they showcased many international designers such as Laura Mancini, Next Generation, Marchesa and Laquan Smith. This gives everyone the chance to expand their market and set up their brands in Dubai and within the Arab world.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM ARAB FASHION WEEK 2017
We noticed floral and pastel looks for the Fall/Winter 2017 collections, particularly in Bruno Caruso’s collection. I guess florals aren’t only for the summer!
SOURCE PHOTO
What makes Arab Fashion Week unique is that they just started a new fashion concept of “ReadyCouture” collections. Dubai is currently the only city in the world that implements ReadyCouture fashion shows and holds them twice a year in May and December.
Many designers showed off a bounty of breathtaking bridal designs. Designers included Speranza, Sylwia Romaniuk and Marchesa Bridal, whose. collection was especially mesmerizing with its elegant yet modern Disney princess gown look.
Leather was dominating the runway with Laquan Smith’s awe-inspiring collection which included skirts, jackets, dresses and thigh-high boots. Not to be outdone, men’s fashion had great representation thanks to designers Rad Hourani and Jenanne Filat, showing off everything from clean-cut suits to classy and laidback winter coats and jackets. This review cannot be concluded without highlighting the beautiful collections of modest fashion by Bekraf and Zoe Eckett. Their jalabiyas and abayas were tasteful features inspired by current Middle Eastern style. Zoe Eckett

Mother and daughter duo Suzan Farhoud and Leen Al Shieshakly were the only Saudi designers at Arab Fashion Week this year, representing their brand Jeans Couture. Even though Farhoud started with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, she still pursued her passion in jewelry design and interior decorating. This fed directly into her love for oriental and European art, not to mention a particular fascination with denim and European fashion.
Between Al Shieshakly’s solid background in the fashion industry and Suzan’s artistic style and love for jeans, the duo came up with the idea of creating a chic and classy denim fashion brand. Thus, Jeans Couture was created.
Her daughter Al Shieshakly attained her bachelor’s in entrepreneurship. Later on, she followed her dream of becoming a visual merchandiser and studied fashion merchandising. She became the head of Visual Merchandise for Bergdorf Goodman and worked with high-end designers such as Christian Dior.
We spoke to Jeans Couture and we learned that their inspiration for the FW17’ Collection came from Spain and Spanish music and rhythm. That’s why we notice their designs have rhythm, movement and layers. “We always like to combine our Eastern and Western heritage. Spain is one of the countries that has a beautiful culture with its music and clothing.” 40 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JULY 2017
The brand’s concept revolves around the phrase: “Couture art-to-wear and attachés for confident, elegant and cosmopolitan women.” Their plan is to be a leading denim brand for art-to-wear couture of luxury clothing and handbags without the use of fur and leathers. Leen’s advice to Saudi designers who are just starting out their careers in the fashion industry was: “Patience. You have got to be patient because it really does take time for something to boom. Especially because this is a product market, not a service market.” Web: jeanscouture.co JeansCouture

Are you looking for cute and easy summer hairstyles? Summer time calls for simple and effortless hairstyles, like braids and half updos. We’ve picked out some easy ones for you that can be done at home.
Your Favorite Childhood Hairstyle is Trendy Again!
This braid look is easy and requires very little effort. If you have curly hair, you’ll need to blow dry it first. Section the front of your hair into two medium-sized sections. Twist them, pull them back towards the middle of your head and secure them with hair pins. Then, braid the rest of your hair. Loosen up your braid so you can give it that natural look and, if you like, you can add these beautiful floral accessories that can be found at H&M, Forever 21 or Zara.

Side Braid Pony
Why go for a normal ponytail? Upgrade it by sectioning the front of your hair and doing a side braid. Pull the braid back and twist the end of it on the base of the ponytail. Voila! This would also be perfect for messy, post-beach hair.
Want to give it a bo hochic look? Find these piece s at H&M!
Half Updo for a Quick Hairstyle
Have no time in the morning for braids? Don’t you worry. If you have natural wavy hair, this is an option for you. But, you can also curl it with a curling iron, or straighten it if you want a sleeker look. Section the front of your hair into two sections. Do a loose twist on both sides and pull them back towards the middle of your head, making sure the sectioned ends are tucked in underneath the twisted sections. Then, secure them with hair pins and let your hair down. Add a nice hairpiece or you can even wear a floral crown! Hairstylist: mno.36

DO CHOOSE the best tanning and sunscreen lotions. If you have a light skin tone, you are at a higher risk of getting exposed to UVI rays. Therefore, pick a sunscreen that contains at least SPF 30. (Neutrogena UltraSheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen. Broad Spectrum SPF45) Available at Whites Pharmacy.
DO WEAR sunglasses and a hat (bonus points for the floppy variety). Hats can protect you from getting heat stroke.
SOAKING UP THE SUMMER SUN
DO DRINK a lot of water while tanning. Staying hydrated while getting exposed to the sun is a must.
Here are some tips for safe tanning. By Dalia Darweesh
Summer is here! It’s finally time to hit the beach, bask in the sun and get that summer tan and glow going. Let’s make sure we get our lovely glow while avoiding any mistakes that could harm our skin. How and with what creams? Well, we’ve got you covered! (Pun totally intended.) 44 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JULY 2017
SUN BATHING DOS AND DON’TS: DO APPLY sunscreen. This is the most essential part of protecting your skin during the summer. It’s recommended that you apply it daily regardless of tanning.
DO PROTECT your hair and apply a good oil to take care of it. (NUXE Huile Prodigieuse Multi-Purpose Dry Oil) Available at Al Dawaa Pharmacy.
SELF-TANNING DOS AND DON’TS: • DO PICK the best self-tanner product for your skin tone, whether it’s light or dark. Hoola Zero Tanlines Allover Body Bronzer from Benefit Cosmetics. It is a gel body bronzer with a custom sponge applicator for a messfree and smooth mattebronze finish.
• DON’T WAX or shave within 24 hours of tanning. Skin can be sensitive and exposing it to the sun could cause skin irritations, breakouts and possibly burns. • DON’T SPEND more than 2-3 hours of tanning a day.
Available at Sephora.
• DO READ the instructions on the bottle to insure you are using it correctly. • DO EXFOLIATE before applying your selftanner. Exfoliating will remove the dead skin cells, making it smoother to apply evenly on your skin. • (If you’re still going to do this outdoors) DO APPLY sunscreen before the self-tanner.
• DON’T FORGET to moisturize after that sun exposure. (Moisturizing & Regenerating After-Sun Balm from Sephora). Hang on, maybe the beach is too far, the weather is too humid or you just want all the joys of tanning without getting exposed to the sun? Yup, you guessed it: let’s talk about self-tanning.
• DON’T USE your bare hands while applying the tanner. Use a glove or mitt for better application. • DON’T SWIM or shower until 4-6 hours after applying the self-tanner.
Available at Sephora. DESTINATIONKSA.COM

DINING AROUND TOWN
THE HUNT FOR ICE CREAM Hottest Coolest ice cream places in town! By Nourah Al Khunaini
It was a particularly hot day when one of my friends suggested to go on an ice cream hunt, hopping from one ice cream shop to the other.
BELLAMIA
We began our journey at Bellamia and ordered the Mascarpone cheese with caramelized figs and the dark chocolate. The odd combination of the first flavor made it intriguing and, even though we had our doubts, it was surprisingly good. The dark chocolate, though, was rich, decadent and not your average chocolate ice cream. Both were very smooth and velvety in texture. Location: Prince Mohammed bin Fahd Rd., Dhahran
We were pleased and excited headed to our next stop: Cold Stone Creamery. There were so many flavors to choose from, but we ultimately went with peanut butter ice cream with brownies. The portion was huge, and even though I’m not a peanut butter fan, seeing the girls’ reactions convinced me to give it a shot. It was magnificent. And the brownies added this lovely chewiness that mixed well with the peanut butter. Definitely filled us up quick. Location: Al Rashid Mall, Khobar

COLD STONE CREAMERY
G GLACE
At this point, I was getting full. But G Glace was near so we had to give it a try. Their displays were enticing and I wanted to try all the flavors, but we landed on a mix of pistachio and Fererro Rocher flavor, surprisingly both of them complemented each other well. The Ferrero Rocher tasted like the real deal, and my friend commented on how “the crunchy bits in it make it very Ferrero-Rocher-like, so extra points for them.” The pistachio left a strong lingering aftertaste that left me happy for the rest of the hunt. Location: Mall of Dhahran, Prince Faisal bin Fahd Rd., Doha, Dhahran
MÖVENPICK
We went in to the Mövenpick shop, and, against our usual tastes, went with the lemon sorbet just to try something different. Plus, it sounded cool and refreshing, and felt just right for this weather. It was sweet yet sour, tangy and utterly delicious. The three of us quickly finished the small cup. Location: Alshihab Altaifi St., Khobar
I FELT HEAVY FROM ALL THE DESSERTS WE’VE HAD, BUT MY FRIEND WAS DETERMINED AND HAD TO FINISH THIS ADVENTURE OF HERS NO MATTER WHAT.

GODIVA
Our next stop was Godiva and we knew we had to get their classic ice cream. I like vanilla while my friend loves chocolate. Thankfully, we were three people. “One order of the classic soft serve, a mix of vanilla and chocolate, please!” I mean, you can’t go wrong with that. The chocolate was divine and, combined with vanilla, it was sheer delight. It was gone in a flash. Location: Gosaibi Village, Prince Turki St., Khobar
“KHALAS, GIRLS. I CAN’T DO THIS ANYMORE,” I EXCLAIMED. “JUST ONE MORE. YOU CAN DO IT.”
HÄAGEN-DAZS
Häagen-Dazs was right next to Godiva, so it seemed like the obvious choice. We walked in and asked for a recommendation since we were too full and making a decision was impossible. “Why don’t you try the salted caramel?” He had me at the words salted and caramel. I just had to have it. We couldn’t have ended the hunt on a better note. Location: Gosaibi Village, Prince Turki St., Khobar
The adventure was fun, silly and extremely enjoyable. I highly recommend you get some friends together and do an ice cream hunt that’ll fill your stomach with tasty treats and your heart with awesome memories. 60 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JULY 2017

GET JUICY!
EXAMPLES OF SOME VEGETABLES AND FRUITS THAT CAN BE JUICED INCLUDE:
The A to Z on the juice cleanse trend
• Kale and spinach – rich in iron and folate
By Shaistha Khan
Media have been abuzz the past few years about juice cleanses as the go-to way to incorporate healthier eating habits. Amid the hype you’re bound to have questions about it all.
WHAT IS A JUICE CLEANSE?
As the name suggests, the juice cleanse is a detoxifying diet that comprises entirely of raw vegetable and fruit juices. Vegetables and fruits that are rich in nutrients and provide a variety of health benefits are juiced and consumed directly.
62 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JULY 2017
• Cabbage – packed with vitamin C • Wheatgrass – loaded with nutrients and vitamins • Carrot – a great source of vitamin A and a natural sweetener for your juice • Cucumbers – rich in vitamin K. • Apple, tomato, blueberries and pineapple – all rich in antioxidants and provide a natural, sweet and refreshing taste to your vegetable juice.
HERE’S AN EASY AND VIBRANT RECIPE TO GET YOU STARTED: INGREDIENTS: • 1 beetroot • 1 red apple • 2 carrots • ½ inch fresh ginger • Juice of ½ lemon
METHOD: • Wash all the ingredients thoroughly and pat dry. • Peel beetroot and carrot. • Cut beetroot, apple and carrot into small chunks.
IS IT FOR ME?
STAFF PHOTO/ALZAHRA AL DAWOOD
Food today can be overloaded with toxins, pesticides, additives, saturated fats, allergens and more, all of which will take a heavy toll on your diet and life. Mix in caffeine consumption, poor sleeping habits and overeating and things just get worse. If you feel bloated, lethargic, craving junk food and caffeine all the time, or having skin breakouts, this cleanse might just be the right way to “jumpstart” into a healthier lifestyle. Consuming a nutrient-dense, plant-based juice diet allows the digestive system to detox and repair itself. However, we highly recommend you consult your doctor and dietician before you begin a cleanse and limit the detox for only three days at a time.
HOW DO I START?
It’s best to consume the entire fruit or vegetable— the core, rind, pulp and seeds— as they are high in fiber. Most fruits and vegetables can be juiced in your blender or juicer, and the end result is best consumed fresh on the day that it’s made.
IS IT IN TOWN?
If the thought of juicing is too tedious, don’t worry— we’ve found the best all-natural juice bars around! At the Green Fix, you can order revitalizing fresh juices in delicious flavors like The Hulk (apple, spinach, cucumber, celery, lemon and ginger) or Smooth Almonds (cinnamon, almonds and dates). WORK THAT CORE STAFF PHOTO/ ALZAHRA AL DAWOOD
Why you should take up Pilates this summer.
Fitness trends come and go but there are a few that become core in the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle, like Pilates. Its techniques are much older than the trend itself. Pilates was first created by Joseph Hubertus Pilates, who came up with the idea based on his knowledge of different fitness styles such as gymnastics and yoga, and developed exercises that would strengthen the mind and body through mental control, breathing and relaxation. Pilates focuses on the correct posture of the body and the core muscles of the abdomen, back and hips.
64 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JULY 2017
Benefits The benefits of this workout are very comprehensive and wonderful and include toning muscles, correcting bad posture, improving elasticity, coordination and getting rid of abdomen fat quickly.
Who’s Pilates for? Those who wish to tone, gain elasticity, lose fat and strengthen abdomen and, above all else, correct body posture. It’s especially useful for pregnant women.
Other benefits we should highlight are: • Practicing concentration on your movements and breathing control helps eliminate stress and improve your mood. • The deep breathing that you learn during practice will vastly improve your sleeping habits. • The more Pilates you do, the better posture you gain and the more confidence you have with your own body.
Classes
For any Pilates class, you need a well-lit and spacious room, comfortable clothes and a yoga mat. Some people like to wear socks but I personally feel more comfortable working out barefoot. The first few classes usually start with some gentle warming movements, breathing control exercises and correctly aligning your body. Then you’ll move onto the basic exercises that will be the core of every session, helping you gradually gain confidence and elasticity with each class.
In the first few classes, you may not have great flexibility, but don’t give up! Over time you’ll see progress and become much more aware of your body and happy with the changes that happen. As you progress, different accessories, advanced exercises and even cardio workouts will be introduced to the class to make it more intense and effective. WHEN ART AND WORDS COLLIDE Artist Saman Sohail helps us visualize “Visual Words”. By Zonaira Chaudry
Visual Words is now available at Words Bookstore.
In an exclusive interview, Sohail shares her insight on this creative collaboration.
What is the inspiration behind “Visual Words”? As designers, travelers and observers of the world, telling stories through our work has always been significant. Each word we chose represents an expression of dreams, hopes, loves, heartbreaks, courage and discovery which all of 82 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JULY 2017
us have experienced at some point in our lives. The alphabet offers endless opportunities to select words that describe those emotions. The book carves a story of its own because each person who explores it becomes a part of its journey.
Tell us about the creative process. I was sharing a series of abstract watercolor circles “The #PaintedCircleSeries” on Instagram which were inspired by various quotes and poems. Anushka sent me a message of appreciation when I painted a few verses she had written and we ended up talking about a collaborative project. We narrowed down 38 words from the English language that resonated with us and that
embraced various emotions within them. Anushka would choose a word, then string more of them together to lend beautiful meaning to them in poetry. I would then take the poetry and paint my abstract interpretation of her words in watercolor. The book took about a year and a half to complete.
What does “Visual Words” mean to you? “Visual Words” came to us at a challenging time in both of our lives. It helped us to deal with, express and even resolve certain emotions and ideas. We’ve woven pieces of our souls into each letter and every streak of color. Location: Palm Square, Budaiya Highway

IN BAHRAIN
HAPPINESS IS A GOOD MEAL Two Spoons presents: Sri Gowri Kkrishna
While driving around I had spotted a big restaurant with a plain green and white sign outside called Sri Kkrishna. That’s right, two K’s. We walked around for a while trying to find it - not wanting to give up our gold dust of a parking space and eventually got there with half an hour to spare until they closed for the afternoon. Already fearing the worst - running out of food, no tables, etc. - I felt a little dejected. Two seconds after opening the door, all my fears evaporated as the place was bustling away, the waiters were all smiling and friendly and the food looked amazing in the little thali trays that seemed to be on everyone’s table. 84 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JULY 2017
We went simple, with Mo ordering a thali (basically a selection of dishes featuring a range of flavors all served up in one platter) and me ordering my favorite chana masala (spiced chickpea dish) - which was simply excellent. I am seriously considering doing a ‘Top 10 Chana Masala’ article in the future as every restaurant is just so different when it comes to this staple dish.
patti Masala, Cha a n a h C , li a Th o = SR 25 Meal for Tw
We sat in silence doing our crossword as the throng of customers gradually subsided and the waiters began to clean up around us. I polished off the last of Mo’s gulab jamun and we paid up, feeling a thousand times better than we had an hour before. Isn’t it amazing what a good meal can do for your mind? Food really is the best medicine. Let me know what you think of this place.
The Author Two Spoons aims to discover Bahrain's multicultural richness through its delicious and authentic food. On a budget and on a mission, Mo and Sally bring you the best of the best every month. Grab a spoon and share in our adventures! Web: two-spoons.com twospoonsbh two.spoons.bh
