THOUGHTS TO PONDER

Thumbs Up to to Charitable Acts

This thumbs up goes out to all organizations doing good deeds such as giving to charity and in this case, not wasting food. Reem Al Bawadi restaurant, for example, doesn’t throw leftover food. They gather it all and the owner herself packages it and gives it away to the less fortunate. A new law states that it is mandatory for grocery stores to give customers proper change in coins rather than gum or candy. Following that, another thumbs up goes out to supermarkets such as Panda, who have started donating change less than SR 1 to charity, after asking customers for permission first of course.

The New KAIA

The new King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA) is under construction. Due to the fact that it’s a massive project, it has been divided into three stages. The first stage is due to be completed by the end of 2014, the second stage by 2025, and the third stage by 2035. By the end of the third stage, KAIA will be able to serve an estimate of 80 million travelers per year. Visit www.jed-airport.com for more details.

Historic Jeddah Festival: Jan. 16 marked the first day of the 10-day Historic Jeddah Festival in Al Balad. The main objective behind the festival (organized by Bench Mark) was to educate people about the Hijaz’s rich history and promote tourism in Jeddah’s Historic Quarter. The festival was a huge success; thousands of visitors were present everyday. Long-time Balad residents were proud to showcase their home, and visitors enjoyed walking through Old Jeddah and seeing craftsmen, carpenters and sellers of traditional foods such as baleela. Visitors had the opportunity to step back in time and see how life was in Old Jeddah. It was a beautiful eventful festival and we all hope for more events promoting Al Balad and our origins.

Almost nothing in the world feels better than lending a helping hand to someone in need, and knowing you made a difference in their life. We thankfully have many charity organizations in KSA, and based on our talk with some of them, we learned that one of the greatest types of love is felt when you do good and only expect the wellbeing and happiness of your community and loved ones.

Jeddah Institute for Speech and Hearing (JISH) Jeddah Institute for Speech and Hearing (JISH) is a non-profit organization aimed at delivering speech and hearing services. In order to deliver nothing but the best, JISH adopted the American SpeechLanguage-Hearing Association (ASHA) standards of clinical practice.

“In 1983, when our son was diagnosed in the West with a severe to profound hearing loss and needed speech-language therapy, there was none to be had in our hometown of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Two hearing impaired children followed and in the absence of quality services we were forced to travel to the West, in particular to the USA, where our children received the best possible intervention. Today, all our children are educated and lead productive and satisfying lives, having fulfilled their full potential. Sadly, this was not the fate of most of the children in our community with communication disorders; most of them would have very limited opportunities. As a result, in 1991 the Jeddah Institute for Speech and Hearing (JISH), a non-profit organization, was established to help all those with communication disorders (i.e. articulation, fluency, voice, receptive and expressive language delay, pragmatics, oral/ aural rehabilitation, aphasia, etc.) achieve their maximum communication potential.” -Sultana Alireza-Zahid, Founder and Chief Executive Director Location: Al Rawdah Dist., Jeddah Tel: +966-12-6675311 Email: jish@jish.com.sa Web: www.jish.com

ALS-SA ALS Saudi Arabia revolves around providing high quality care for people living with ALS. Through ALSSA’s website, people can share their experiences with this illness, learn more about it, and learn how to cope with it. Siblings Alanoud, Noura and Lulu Bint Faisal Bin Migrin Bin Abdulaziz give us more insight about ALS and how ALS-SA began. Please explain ALS:

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also referred to as Motor Neuron Disease, is a serious neurological illness that moves very fast taking away your ability to control your muscles. This terrible disease takes everything from you but your brain, sharp as a tack, and you are unable to do anything about it. How and why did ALS Saudi Arabia begin?

For us it’s personal; our mother was diagnosed with ALS. We had to read and research it since we had no clue what it is. After two years of learning about it and how to cope with it we decided to launch a website for ALS in Saudi Arabia to help raise awareness of this horrible disease for those who have not experienced it in their family. Since this illness is so expensive too, we would like to help patients with providing equipment they need by donating to the companies on the website and we will be the ones to deliver the equipment to the patients.

Do you personally know someone who suffers from this illness? If so, how did you learn to cope and deal with them?

Yes, on top of the world and healthy our mother was diagnosed with ALS at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore in 2010 and was told her life was about to change and there was nothing they could do about it. It was very hard watching our mother struggle. Since we knew a little about it, it took us time to learn how to treat an ALS patient – our mother – and we are still learning everyday. Since our mother is fully paralyzed we try to cheer her up by changing the furniture in her room every once in a while, have friends come over, watch comedy movies or series, and etc. For us the best way to cope with it is to talk to other ALS families and share experiences since loved ones become full time caregivers. If you could ask society to do one thing to help, what would it be?

We’d ask them to share this website www. als-sa.org and help us raise awareness. They can also help patients to live their lives easier by buying equipment from companies we provide on the website. Are there any upcoming events people should know about?

We just launched the website on Jan. 10. Any future events will be announced on our website. May God help us fight ALS. Web: http://als-sa.org

What is love? Baby don’t hurt me… Just kidding, I don’t mean the song. I mean, seriously what is love? Love is a complex emotion you must feel in order to understand. Although common sense, artists and poets use hearts as a symbol of love, it is actually the brain that produces chemical signals to help people understand love. The ancient Greeks came up with the following four terms to describe the different types and styles of love:

Agape:

Phileo:

Storge:

Eros:

Agape is an unconditional love that accepts someone regardless of his or her imperfections. It revolves around the “giving and expecting nothing in return” type of mentality. Storge is the style of love associated with family and in some cases, certain friendships. It is the type of love that family members naturally have for one another. Storge love is unconditional; and forgiveness, comfort and security are words to describe it. 28 DESTINATION JEDDAH

This type of love is affectionate, warm and gentle. It makes you want to build a friendship with someone before loving him or her unconditionally. Literally translated, phileo means how you feel about someone. Words to describe Eros are intense, passion and new relationships. Eros is when someone in a relationship says “I love you” too soon. It is a romantic type of love that involves risk but is still emotionally beautiful.

Just like the ancient Greeks, we decided to come up with our very own types of love, but with our own unique style.

Unconditional Love is the love exchanged between parents, siblings and children.

F Snuggle

By Reina Vidad Tejano

When it comes to keeping your relationship sweet and meaningful, nothing beats the basics. Yes, a lavish trip for two to a honeymoon destination would be amazing but it’s not something you could do every day. Making a relationship work and staying in love doesn’t take thousands of riyals. Here are some things you could do daily to continuously show your partner that you value them in your life and that is sure to make them feel special and loved.

30 DESTINATION JEDDAH

I am an advocate of hugs and whether it’s the winter season or not, spending an extra five minutes before getting out of bed to cuddle and mumble sweet nothings to your spouse is nothing short of an intimate moment. Never mind that you’re late for work or the kids are causing a commotion in the hall, just give your partner a tight hug and make them feel that nothing stands in between the two of you for that one (or five) seconds of physical togetherness. It can make all the difference in making each other’s day better and brighter.

In the span of time that you’ve gotten to know your husband or wife, things can get flat – by way of already knowing everything there is to know about each other. But that shouldn’t encourage you to be mediocre, instead get inspired to do something unexpected but significant to your partner. It can be anything simple from a love note posted on the bathroom mirror to a getting a signed memorabilia from his favorite athlete. It’s about paying attention and noticing the little details that usually get filtered out. If done effectively, giving your loved one a surprise will definitely etch you in his or her memory for a long time.

F Say “I love you”

While actions do speak louder than words, I know a lot of people (by people, I mean guys, most of the time) don’t say the actual words “I love you” a lot. Sure, saying it too often may diminish its impact but life is short too. As quoted in one famous movie, “If you love someone, say it, say it right then, out loud. Otherwise, the moment just passes you by.” Sometimes, it’s easy for us to assume that our wives or husbands already know that since we’ve married them already, but letting your loved one hear those words sincerely will always, always warm their hearts.

Granted, not a lot of people go around walking in KSA, but there are a lot of spaces where married couples can go for a stroll. Walks can be romantic provided with the right scenery and conversation. Whether you two share that time in silence or walking off a hefty dinner, it’s always good to feel that you’re treading a path side by side the person you love.

F

F Surprise each other

F Go for a walk

Make each other a homemade present

Another opportunity to be creative and show thoughtfulness is by making something with your own hands. It’s easy enough to buy a present at a store, but whether it’s a handwritten card or a scrapbook of your photos and remembrances from your young love days, making each other a homemade present shows you’ve dedicated some real time and effort into making something nice for your partner.

F Cook a meal together

Nothing brings people together more than food, so why not put on both of your aprons on and get cooking in the kitchen? It doesn’t have to be Food Network-perfect, but cooking together is a simple way to bond. If either one of you doesn’t know how to cook, well it’s a good opportunity for you to teach them something new. If both of you can’t cook, well, let’s just say a food fight can always turn into a romantic activity.

KSA’s How I Met Your Mother By Bassma Al Toaimi

Unlike the sitcom, “How I Met Your Mother,” we won’t let you wait too long for stories about how some loving couples in KSA met. Some are sweet and some are inspirational. Read, enjoy and share your stories with us.

“The Leg Lady”

He was an outgoing, popular, lovable young man who wanted to get married and settle down. He was walking down the street one day in his neighborhood when he saw a young lady step inside a car. When she lifted her foot to get in the car, he got a glimpse of her lower legs, and decided right then and there that she was the one. He quickly asked his friend who this woman was, and went straight to her father to propose. Unfortunately, he was rejected and because of this rejection, he changed his 32 DESTINATION JEDDAH

mind about getting married. But he never forgot that woman although he only saw her leg. Two years later, the young man heard that someone else had proposed to his “leg lady” and also was rejected, so he went to the woman’s father and tried again. The father said yes this time. The man and his leg lady have been happily married for 55 years, and are now surrounded by their beautiful children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. See what a lady’s leg can do?

Arafah Day

A woman and her daughter had just moved back to Saudi after living years abroad. On Arafah day during Hajj, the mother was wholeheartedly and loudly praying that her daughter would find her happily ever after and be able to settle in and get accustomed to life in KSA. As soon as she finished her sentence, a young man tapped on her shoulders and said, “Can I marry your daughter?” When they got back to Jeddah after Hajj, they met, and the rest is history.

The Boss and the Reporter

He was her boss and she reported to him. On her second day of work, the Reporter introduced herself to the Boss. Shortly after, they started talking and for the following three months, the Reporter continued to wear her niqab so he fell in love with her before he saw her face. They have been happily married ever since.

“La Vie En Rose”

The bride and groom’s sisters work together. When the two employees discussed their siblings, they noticed plenty of similarities between the to-be bride and groom. The bride’s sister was telling the groom’s sister that her sister (the bride to-be) is the only one of them who absolutely loves listening to Edith Piaf, otherwise known as the voice of France, and the star who sings “La Vie En Rose.” The groom’s sister shockingly stated that her brother (the groom) loves this singer as well. That’s when those two employees began thinking like cupid. At first, both bride and groom were hesitant. Nine months later, they actually met, instantly clicked, and Shakespeare’s “The first time I saw you I felt in love and you smiled because you know,” was on their wedding cake topper.

The Way it was done Before

In 1961, a teenage girl was in her room, when her father walked in and said “Congratulations sweetie, you just got engaged!” This couple has been happily married for 53 years now, and every year they celebrate their anniversary with more love for each other than the previous year.

“When I tapped the side of my wheelchair and told my husband, ‘you’re the only reason I want to be free from this contraption,’ he kissed me on my forehead and said, ‘honey, I don’t even see that thing.’ ” “Exactly 10 years ago almost to the minute, I stopped at an intersection and a car rear ended me. The driver was a student at UF, just like me. He was cordial and apologetic. As we waited for the cops and the tow truck we chatted and started laughing together about all sorts of stuff. We just celebrated our eighth wedding anniversary.” “Exactly 20 years ago to the hour, I risked my life to save a woman who was drowning in the rapids of the Colorado River. And that’s how I met my wife – the love of my life.” “Today, as I watched my 75-year-old grandmother and grandfather being silly with each other and laughing in the kitchen, I felt like I got a short glimpse of what true love feels like. Creative gifts for your other half

By Mohammed Mirza

It can be pretty disheartening to realize that your loved one already has the gift that you carefully and lovingly picked out, but then again it’s easy to give duplicate gifts when you purchase common items at local retail stores. Fortunately, you can get creative and give your loved ones gifts that they probably don’t already have and will not forget for a long time. Keep reading if you’re looking for creative gift ideas!

01

A Personalized Mug

Instead of giving a gift that will simply sit around and collect dust, you can give something useful by investing in a personalized mug. Keep in mind the interests of your loved one and make a mug that depicts those interests. You can have photos printed on the mug, a catchy line typed on it or you may just paint it yourself. Many gifts lose their appeal after a few weeks or wear out after a few months, but this isn’t the case with this personalized mug. 54 DESTINATION JEDDAH

02

edible arrangements

One gift that is becoming quite popular is the edible arrangement. You can send your loved an edible arrangement pack they can enjoy in more ways than one. Not only does it look great, but they can also savor the treats it's made of. There are endless possibilities with what can be placed in your edible arrangement. You can add chocolates, desserts, or even fruits if you’re looking for something a little healthier.

04 05

03

KIT IN A JAR

No matter what kind of interests your loved one has, you can arrange a personalized kit that’s in a jar. These can range from a survival kit, spa kit, travel kit, makeup kit, so no matter which kit you opt for just pack all the essentials related to it and place them in a jar. This will show the recipient that you really know them and care about their interests. You may also add a note on why you picked out the particular kit as a gift.

ALL ABOUT YOUR BASKET

Make notes of all the reasons you love your loved one, then buy small gifts to go with each note. For example, reason you love your spouse is for their passion for listening to a particular singer. You can add an audio CD of that singer and attach it to the note. Similarly, put all the notes and attached gifts altogether in a basket, this one is sure to prove your affection.

scrapbook

This is probably the best way to show some love. A scrapbook is not only something people can save forever, but also fun to share with others and can capture thoughts and memories that might have been otherwise forgotten. Get hold of all the different memories you have with your loved one such as photos, letters and all other sorts of memorabilia. Buy an empty book, stick them all in, personalize the cover and empty spaces with drawings, paintings and captions. You can be assured that this gift is bound to fill a special place in your loved one’s heart. DESTINATION JEDDAH 55

Jeddah’s Seafood Scene

Fish Market

By Mohammed H. Henaidy

Being a coastal city, Jeddah has always been known for the high quality seafood it offers. We have here selected six of the best seafood restaurants in Jeddah, each with different styles and target markets. Keep reading for my thoughts and ratings of each.

58 DESTINATION JEDDAH

La Mer: La Mer opened over six months ago, but did not do enough marketing and advertising so far. La Mer (meaning “the sea” in French) is a Lebanese style seafood restaurant with a wonderful atmosphere and food quality. However, the quality of service needs to be improved. A newcomer should always offer better quality than competitors in order to gain market share. Taste: Freshness: Quality of Seafood: Ambiance: Service: Price: Overall:

Amou Hamza:

La Mer

Fish Market: Fish Market is not only one of the finest dining restaurants in Jeddah, but also offers a combination of very good service, ambiance and high quality seafood. Price is really high compared to its peers, but it is no doubt a must-try. Taste: Freshness: Quality of Seafood: Ambiance: Service: Price: Overall:

Targeting a wider market share, Amou Hamza’s ambiance is much simpler and more modest compared to the first two restaurants on the list. But seafood quality is still good and it deserved its position among Jeddah’s best six.

Taste: Freshness: Quality of Seafood: Ambiance: Service: Price: Overall:

Kaddoura: Similar to Amou Hamza, but with an Egyptian style. Reasonable seafood quality, but unfortunately somewhat disappointing atmosphere.

Twina

Taste: Freshness: Quality of Seafood: Ambiance: Service: Price: Overall: DESTINATION JEDDAH 59

Sayadiah Express: The best choice for seafood lovers who have a very tight lunch schedule and cannot wait for a fancy meal to be cooked slowly. Reasonable quality and service compared to the time spent in preparing your meal (510 minutes) and the very affordable prices. Taste: Freshness: Quality of Seafood: Ambiance: Service: Price: Overall:

Twina: La Mer

If you like seafood but your are not ready to go all the way to “Thahban” area to enjoy the catch of the day, then Twina has found the best solution for you. You can surely experience a very similar quality of that branch but this time at their recently opened branch in the middle of Jeddah city. And yeah, don’t worry; service and ambiance have been improved to comply with the new location. Taste: Freshness: Quality of Seafood: Ambiance: Service: Price: Overall:

Perfect Combinations

By Jou Pabalate and Mohammed Al Dughaishm

The “winter” season may be drawing to a close in the next couple of weeks but we in Jeddah love our hot drinks all year long. For the sweet issue, we didn’t want to miss letting you in on one of favorite foodie affairs, the perfect marrying of local hot drinks with delectable treats.

Turkish Coffee • Traditional Desserts Turkish Delight and Burma Khadayif • Dark Chocolate Mint • Nuts Did you know? Turkish coffee is a local afternoon and after meal drink in KSA. It’s always served with water so you can cleanse your palette first and enjoy its bold taste to the fullest. The sweetness of the Turkish coffee can either be sada (no sugar), orta (medium) or one teaspoon of sugar, or sekerli very sweet or two teaspoons of sugar.

Café Lattes and Cappuccino

Espresso Shots

• Classic – Brioche or Croissant • Fruity – Berries and Apricot • Cheese – Soft and light

• Rich – Chocolate fudge cake, dark chocolate to complement, white to subdue the strong tones of Arabica beans. • Creamy – Cream brulee, New York cheese cake • Fruity – Berries, oranges, don’t go for a fruit that’s too sour, it can overpower your espresso or leave a not so nice after taste.

DJ Recommends: The Cheese Plate at Paul is a perfect combination with espresso and cream based hot drinks and we love their croissant. It’s a wannabe Parisian’s onestop shop.

64 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Gahwa – Arabic Coffee • Dates – Especially Al Khalass and Al Sukkari varieties • Basbosa • Baglawa Did you know? Gahwa is a traditional sign of generosity and hospitality stemming from the Bedouin culture. As much as possible, you should accept the first cup and some traditional Saudi homes do practice the odd number rule, you either drink one, three, or five cups. Don’t expect your finjan (cup) to be filled to the brim since it’s considered impolite to do so.

Hot Chocolate • Tangy – Citrus fruits, green grapes, strawberries and raspberries • Salty – Popcorn, peanut butter, and nuts • Sweet – Mint flavored chocolates

Tea

We didn’t forget the tea-lovers among our readers but since there’s just a long list of tea varieties, here’s some combinations of the most popularly enjoyed ones in Saudi:

• Earl Grey tea with milk and a bite of a raspberry scone • Red tea with mint is warm and refreshing along with super sweet Middle Eastern delights like Baglawa and Kunafa. • Aromatic Jasmine tea is light yet flavorful and enjoyed best with Digestive or Gingersnap cookies. • Chai Karak (karak tea) is spicy, creamy and ohh sooo sweet! Best solely on its own or maybe with a rotti bun!

The Marmoreal Village of Dhee Ayn 66 DESTINATION JEDDAH

By Mohammed Mirza

Stunning landscape, incredible weather, utopian village up in the mountains, the village of Dhee Ayn offers it all. Dhee Ayn, also known as the Marble Village, is a 400-year-old historic township in the Al Baha province of Saudi Arabia, built on top of a mountain distinguished for its numerous white stones. At just over 400 kilometers from Jeddah, the charming village of Dhee Ayn is also famous for its pure mountain water, unique settlements, rare bananas and aromatic flowers. Surprisingly, we didn’t plan to visit the place. We just happened to cross it on our way to Abha. We were driving on one of the most beautiful highways I have ever been on. It cuts through the Sarawat Mountain range and connects Taif to Abha. After crossing the city of Al Baha on the highway, we took a turn towards the King

Fahd Road, which took us from the unruffled Sarawat highlands to the scalding Al Tihama coastal flats. Far away we saw a group of old buildings sitting atop a white hill. The place was visible for several kilometers as we approached the village. Even from a distance the place can easily be located by the white glow impending from it. Initially we thought it was just one of the many villages that we happened to cross by. We were soon proven wrong. As we were going closely past it, the dark somber colored buildingsat a distance were becoming clearer. I realized that this was not just any other village but the historic village of Dhee Ayn. It was a memorable sight, historic houses amidst beautiful mountains; it looked like the structures of Dhee Ayn were caressing the sky.

At about 24 kilometers southwest of Al Baha, the village of Dhee Ayn is near the terminus of the main escarpment road. Several impressive historical stone and slate structures dot this road that leads to the village. The village looks perched, seemingly defying gravity by levitating atop a lucid cloud. The admirable stone settlement is set on a white marble stump in the middle of a palm circumscribed pocket canyon. The surroundings of the village are lush green from the ample rainfall the place gets. The houses of the village itself are not made of marble, but of flake stones and slate. Instead, the village got the moniker "Marble Village" for the rocky outcrop it is built upon. The outcrop is a luminous rocky hill of white marble, which stands in sharp disparity to the grayish dark slates with which the houses were constructed. DESTINATION JEDDAH 67

The gray mountains that loom behind the outcrop and the green fields in the forefront add to shining marble that the village calmly rests on. The village was supposedly inhabited over 400 years ago; many structures still survive to this very day. In its heyday the place was a major gold mining site and was renowned for its high quality craft products. The village also witnessed several battles that occurred between local tribesmen and the invading Ottoman forces. It was eventually abandoned around 30 to 40 years ago, which makes the village even more transfixing. We were allowed to drive right up and climb its ramparts and explore the mysterious rooms within its numerous houses and buildings. The settlement is abandoned and it was appalling to see that the village is unguarded and tourists are allowed almost everywhere, including those structures that are on the verge of collapse! We had to be careful when wandering around, as many of the structures are in a serious state of decay. Some of the weaker structures have already caved in the ground, while others have walls leaning at precarious angles under the weight of natural forces over a long period of time.

We were really eager to see the village at sunset because we heard that the marble beneath it tends to glow even more during that time. But we were unable to since we had many more places to explore on our itinerary in a short span of time. Moreover, we were not able to spot any banana plantations nor the mountain springs that village was well known for. During our visit we were spellbound by the attractive scenery of the village, a great interweaving of the colors of nature and history all in one place. It was a great experience to enter the historic structures and observe their minutiae. We were a bit disappointed by the village’s present condition, but things are bound to ameliorate by the growing attention being amassed by the village.

Things

to Save Jeddah’s Coast

By Mohammed Mirza

We Jeddahwis have been blessed with nature’s gift in the form of Jeddah’s 75 kilometer-long coastline. Although the recent news of increasing pollution among this beautiful coast is heartbreaking, we have a responsibility towards safeguarding our coast. Below are a few ways that you may be able to contribute in achieving so.

1. Travel the coast sensibly

Practice responsible boating, jet skiing and other recreational activities on the water. Never throw anything overboard, and be aware of marine life in the waters around you. If you’re set on taking a cruise find the most eco-friendly option.

2. Help take care of the coast

Whether you are having a picnic or just relaxing by the coast, always clean up after yourself. Even if you do not find a garbage bin nearby keep a bag with you so that you may carry the trash until you come across a bin. You may go even further by participating in local beach cleanups. 78 DESTINATION JEDDAH

3. Do not purchase items that exploit marine life

Near Jeddah’s coast you may find some vendors selling certain products that may contribute to the harming of fragile coral reefs and marine population. Avoid purchasing items such as coral jewelry or seashell accessories.

4. Support those working for a better coast

Many organizations are fighting to protect marine habitats and wildlife. Find a group that plays an active role in safeguarding Jeddah’s coast and consider giving financial assistance or volunteering for hands-on work or advocacy. There are many corporations as well that are trying to protect Jeddah’s coast as part of their corporate social responsibility program, try to support their efforts.

5. Educate yourself on problems that Jeddah’s coast is facing

The more you learn about the problems that Jeddah’s coast is facing, the more you’ll want to help and ensure its health. Later on you may share that knowledge to educate and inspire others among your friends, family and community.

SPIRITUALITY

Al Wedad Charity Foundation By Maryam Al Dabbagh

It is a well-known fact that “a society’s advancement can be judged by how it treats its weak: the elderly, the disabled and the orphans.” In its care for orphans of unknown parentage, Al-Wedad Charity Foundation is doing its part to advance Saudi society.

80 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Their work is fulfilling, in essence,

“Those who wish for their hearts to soften should take care of orphans.” -The saying of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

AL WEDAD CARING From infancy to 3 years old, the children at Al Wedad are cared for until they can be taken in by families through breastfeeding by the mother (whose milk can be medically induced, if not natural). From the professional, dedicated care of the Al Wedad staff, they emerge fully prepared for a better life. THEIR HEALTH To care properly for the children, Al Wedad does not merely depend on common knowledge of its temporary foster mothers, but utilizes the special knowledge of experts. Pediatric doctors volunteered to fill out exact directions that foster mothers must comply to rigidly: schedules for the children’s feeding times, what to be done in cases of illness, and even the correct time to go out in the sun. THEIR EMOTIONS The staff at Al Wedad understands the importance of caring emotionally for the children, in order to impart to them their own complete emotional development. Every child is monitored carefully to be sure that he or she is reaching all physical, mental and emotional development goals. Because Al Wedad only houses children up until 3 years old, their focus is to be the best place possible for a transition period for the child. Their EnviroNment A time to prepare them to be taken in by a foster family who will bring them up as their own. Nearly all the children have already been assigned families, and are only waiting for the paperwork to be completed. But there are new children coming steadily who must be accommodated.

Growing up with love and care It is a misconception that unknown parentage necessarily means illegitimate, while oftentimes children have been reluctantly given up by parents who have fallen on hard financial times and can no longer support them. Remembering that any one of us could be in their situation – after all, no one chooses what family they are born into – helps to remind us that these orphans are like our own children, and we have a responsibility and duty towards them. In fact, if we do not – if we ignore the problem, which is a rising phenomenon in Saudi society – they represent a ticking time bomb: children who have not grown up with love or care, and will hit back with pent-up frustration, anger and desperation at the very society that once rejected them. THEIR FUTURE These children are being prepared for a bright future with foster parents who will take them in and care for them as their own. They are eager to welcome these innocent, adorable children into their lives, and can’t wait to give them the opportunity at a life they may otherwise never have had. Thanks to Al Wedad’s sponsors and donors, this foundation can continue its work.

“Be merciful and Allah will be merciful To you.” -The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

Grains and Broccoli, Anyone? Health With JosĂŠ

Cookshop Jeddah By JosĂŠ Ortiz

Many restaurants have recently opened their doors in Tahlia Street and one of them is Cookshop in Astra Center. This TurkishItalian restaurant has a very singular decoration that I personally loved. They offer quite good vegetarianfriendly options like their Abundant Grains Salad. The salad is indeed full of lentils, chickpeas, corn and eggplant. Served in a tortilla casserole, it is perfectly sized for two. In the salad section there are more fully vegan salads, vegetarian salads and also some for those trying to keep their weight under control. For a main dish I chose the diet penne with vegetables, a very generous portion of whole-wheat penne with different vegetables in tomato sauce. Again, if you are vegan, vegetarian or looking after your weight you will find a lot of different pasta and pizza dishes that will surely match your needs. The only demerit I could find is that if you look for a healthy and low-calorie dessert, this is not your place! 82 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Benefits of Broccoli When I tell anyone I am vegan, they automatically picture me devouring a whole mountain of broccoli. Indeed, I could eat a kilo of broccoli in one shot – I love it! What I love most about broccoli is its health benefits. Broccoli has a lot of anti-cancer properties; it helps by slowing down and even preventing osteoarthritis. It improves your blood pressure and also has an anti-aging effect. It is an amazing source of potassium, vitamins A and C, folic acid, fiber and calcium.

Broccoli has a lot of anti-cancer properties Make broccoli your preferred side dish and get all these benefits now. You can stir-fry it, steam it, boil it... Or even chew it raw.

Was Going to Gym One of Your New Year’s Resolutions? If you thought that the first step to reduce weight was to join a gym, think again! I saw so many people waste their money joining gyms and never going. We can start our journey with some exercises that do not require gym memberships or expensive equipment, but with one exception: your shoes. If you are going to start jogging, invest in quality running gear. Don't choose your shoes based on their color or brand. It might impact your performance and cause injuries. Surf the net and you will find a lot of exercises for all muscle groups that need no equipment. Concentrate on

your larger muscle groups: your chest, arms, back and legs. Later on, you will have time to go deeper in detail for this or that specific muscle. At the beginning of my personal weight loss journey I mostly focused on cardio exercises. But remember, working on building your muscles will also help you burn calories. No matter how big your target is, when you combine healthy food and sports your body reacts much better. Do not try to lose weight too fast. Body fat took its time to build up in your body and it will take time to lose it. But it will definitely leave!

Getting FiT Together By Jill Calvert

The sweet benefits of working out with a partner or in groups.

How can anything sweet be healthy, you’re saying? Well, fitness in itself is sweet, and even sweeter when you do it as a group or with a partner. So let’s highlight the benefits of group exercise and exercising with a partner and some ideas on how you can workout with that loved one…. SWEET!

What is Group Training? People naturally think: an instructor with a microphone, loud music, masses of people in a studio moving in all directions, some doing it wrong, right, and some, well, not quite sure! You would be right; this is a “group or studio class.” I myself teach them and love doing so. I think they are great, fun, energetic and help get people moving. They can add variety to your workouts, great for cross training and can help eliminate boredom and give you a little extra push. 84 DESTINATION JEDDAH

This type of exercise has been around for quite a while and there have been some great developments over the years. To name one, the Les Mills Programs. However, over the past few years I have seen another area develop; small group training, which can be anything from two to six people! My observations are based on my own experiences, fellow workers and clientele. I can also happily report that the results were better than traditional exercise classes alone.

What are the benefits of small group training or training with your beloved partner? Although it is a group session, the instructor is able to focus on form and technique, as there are fewer members than in a normal studio class. There is better communication between trainer and client. More communication = More education = Better results

Groups are usually made up of likeminded people and friends who want to exercise and get fit. You will develop friends adding to the social side of your total wellbeing. There is an element of friendly competition in the group, and you may find that you put more effort in! More effort = More results.

I was once told by a group of clients that they felt more committed to small group training rather than a one-on-one. They felt that if they canceled due to a lazy spell, they would let the team down. Share the cost. Normally small group training costs less than a one on one. So it’s a win-win situation.

So now that you know the benefits, all that’s left to do is grab some friends, family and loved ones and get moving! It’s fun and social, you really can laugh, enjoy and get fit.

The Sauna AND You By Zareen Muzaffar

Jeddah has some of the most amazing spas where you can pamper yourself. But before you do that, read about the various benefits of spa time!

Benefits of Sauna: 1. Stress Relief: Who isn’t stressed these days? With the fast paced life that involves work, domestic chores, children and socializing, who doesn’t need some time to relax. We all do! Some time in the sauna helps you get rid of stress, clear your mind and is beneficial for your body too. 2. Detox: One of the most important reasons to use the sauna is for detoxification. The heat in the sauna releases toxins from our body and also induces perspiration, which is great for the skins health.

Sauna helps in improving blood circulation and provides some relief to the aches due to the warmth. 4. Respiratory Problems: Steam is an excellent treatment for respiratory problems such as chest congestion, bronchitis, laryngitis and sinusitis. 5. Weight Loss: According to Dr. Oz, the high temperature helps lower blood pressure and increase blood circulation. “It gets your heart to beat faster, and it burns calories,ˮ Dr. Oz says. “It raises your metabolism a little bit, and also when you sweat, you sweat out toxins through the skinˮ. Now isn’t that a great way to shed some calories?

Early Scandinavians in ancient Finland invented the sauna.
