THE PROJECT IS LOCATED IN THE CENTRAL TEACHING AREA OF SHEFFIELD UNIVERSITY. THE PRESENTED RESEARCH PROJECT AIMS TO INVESTIGATE BOTH THE POSSIBILITIES OF INTEGRATING CLIMATE WEATHER DATA INTO THE DESIGN AND USING IT AS CRITERIA IN ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN, USING THE EXAMPLE OF LIGHTWEIGHT STEEL AND BREATHABLE MATERIAL, AS WELL AS THE POSSIBILITIES OF COMPUTATIONAL DESIGN METHODS FOR INTEGRATED AND CONTEXT ORIENTED DESIGN STRATEGIES.

NEW TEMPERATURE SENSITIVE MATERIAL| 新型温感材料 THE APERTURES RESPOND TO TEMPERATURE CHANGES WITHIN A RANGE FROM 35ºC TO 10ºC, WHICH EQUALS THE SOLAR RADIATION RANGE FROM BRIGHT SUNNY TO RAINY WEATHER IN A MODERATE CLIMATE. THIS PANELS EMPLOYS SIMILAR DESIGN STRATEGIES OF PHYSICALLY PROGRAMMING A RESPONSIVE MATERIAL SYSTEM THAT REQUIRES NEITHER EXTRANEOUS MECHANICAL OR ELECTRONIC CONTROLS, NOR THE SUPPLY OF EXTERNAL ENERGY. 松果应对温度变化范围内从 35ºC-10ºC, 等于太阳辐射 范围从阳光明媚到阴雨天气温和的气候。 此面板使用类似的物理设计策略编程响应材料系统 , 既 不需要外来的机械或电子控制 , 也没有外部能量的供 应。

SITE LOCATION| 基地位置 THE SITE CHOSEN FOR THE COMPLEX, LOCATED IN SHANGHAI, IS TWO PIECES OF UNOCCUPIED LAND, ON THE LEFT HAND OF THE OLD RIVER DOCK WAREHOUSE, NOT TOO FAR FROM THE OLD CITY CENTRE, 2010 EXPO SITE AND THE FINANCIAL CENTRE. THE URBAN SETTING WILL DIRECTLY INFLUENCE THE COMPLEX. THE BUILDING COMPLEX WILL BE COMPOSED OF THE COMMERCIAL SHOPS, EXHIBITION GALLERY, OFFICE BUILDING AND LEISURE LANDSCAPE. THE SITE IS ALLOWED TO BE CONSTRUCTED WITH A FAR UNDER 3. AS THE COHESION OF EACH INDIVIDUAL AGENT RISES THE PEDESTRIAN FLOW PATH BEGINS TO ATTRACT TO EACH OTHER, GENERATING A NON-LINEARCURVED PATH THAT IS SIMILAR TO THAT OF THE ANTS. IN THE MEANTIME, THIS WAY OF DISTRIBUTING PEDESTRIAN PATH WOULD ALSO MINIMIZE THE AVERAGE COMMUTE DISTANCE BETWEEN DIFFERENT LOCATIONS. WE COULD GET ALL THREE PEDESTRIAN PATHS BY ADAPTING THE SCRIPTS AND PARAMETERS. 每个单体的聚集性将增加行人流路径之间的互相吸引 , 产生类似蚂蚁集群的曲线路径。同时这种划分行人路 径的方式也会减少不同地点间的平均通勤时间。通过 调整脚本和参数,我们可以获得三种行人路径。

PEDESTRAIN FLOW PATH| 人流路径 THE DIAGRAMS ABOVE DESCRIBE THE DENSITY OF USAGE OF EACH PEDESTRIAN PATH ACCORDING TO THE DIFFERENT TIME THROUGHOUT THE DAY. THE DENSITY AND THE LENGTH OF EACH LINES BOTH REPRESENT THE AMOUNT OF AGENTS TRAVELING ACROSS THE SITE. THE FOUNDING OF SWARMING SIMULATIONS ARE AS FOLLOWS: • DURING MORNING HOURS, BLOCK A AND A SMALL PART OF BLOCK B IS SELDOM OCCUPIED. SOHO FUNCTION AND RESTAURANT COULD BE INTRODUCED INTO THESE AREAS TO FULLY TAKE ADVANTAGES OF THESE UNOCCUPIED HOURS. • ON THE OTHER HAND, AT LUNCH TIME, PART OF BLOCK A ALONGSIDE THE MAIN ROAD WOULD BE A GREAT LOCATION FOR GALLERY, MUSEUM AND RESTAURANT TO MAKE THE LUNCHTIME OF OFFICE POPULATION MORE CONVENIENT AND JOYFUL. • FOR 17:00 AND 22:00, WE NOTICE THE LESS OCCUPIED AREAS AND INTRODUCED FITNESS, MARKET, CINEMA AND ENTERTAINMENT FUNCTION. 上面的图描述的是一天中不同的时间行人路径的使用密度。密度和每个线点的高度都代表单体穿越站点 的数量。群集模拟结论如下 : • 在早上时间 ,A 和一小部分 B 使用量少。引入 SOHO 功能和餐厅可以充分利用这部分的空闲时间。 • 另一方面 , 在午餐时间 , 临主要道路的一部分 A 将适时的置入画廊 , 博物馆和餐馆功能以利用午餐时间 办公人口。 •17:00 和 22:00, 我们利用这时间段的一部分未使用空间用于健身、市场、电影和娱乐功能。

•The metaball algorithm is nothing but an extention of "sphere packing". The algorithm take into the positive and negative relationship between each function element. •The algorithm quantify the influence radius of each based on its function area. •It smothly merges every component into a giant organic complex, corresponding to the three paths generated from previous simulation.

THROUGH THE THESIS DESIGN WE DISCOVERED UNCONVENTIONAL WAY OF ANALYZING AND SIMULATING THE PEDESTRIAN FLOW ACCORDING TO THE SITE-SPECIFIC SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT. THE BEHAVIOR OF EACH INDIVIDUAL CONTRIBUTES TO THE SWARMING SIMULATION AND CONSTANTLY UPDATE ITSELF TO THE EVER-CHANGING LOOPS. BY INVESTIGATING INTO THE USAGE DENSITY OF THE SITE AT DIFFERENT HOURS IN A DAY, WE MANAGE TO FIGURE OUT THE LESS OCCUPIED AREA AND FACILITATE THEM WITH PROPER ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS. THEN THESE FACTORS ARE PASSED TO THE SPACE PACKING SIMULATION AND TRYING TO GET A PROTOTYPE OF THE COMPACT LOCATION OF EACH FUNCTION. THE LOCATION OF THE FUNCTION WOULD PROVIDE SEEDS FOR THE METABALL SIMULATION WHICH, IN THE END, WOULD RESULT IN THE FINAL GEOMETRY. 在本设计中,根据特定场地周围环境,我们运用了一种非常规的方 式分析和模拟行人流量。每个单体的行为引发出集群行为和不断变 化的自身循环。通过调查基地在不同时间段的使用密度 , 我们能充 分利用非活跃区域 , 赋予适当的附加功能。之后这些参数通过包装 空间模拟,从而更紧凑的布置每个功能的位置。最后各功能位置将 通过的 METABALL 圆球模拟 , 从而最终得到建筑的最终几何形体。

IINTRO| 简介 THE PROJECT CALLED URBAN EMERGENCIES WAS HELD BY ALEXANDER VOLLEBREGT (ASSISTANT PROFESSOR URBANISM AND HEAD OF THE URBAN EMERGENCIES PROGRAMME), TOGETHER WITH A TEAM OF STUDENTS , SHORTLY AFTER A FIRE BURNT DOWN THE ARCHITECTURE FACULTY. [B]CITY BLOCK| 旧城区 INFORMAL SETTLEMENT WITHIN THE CITY IS A CHAOS AND FULL OF SLUMS ,WHICH IS TOTALLY A BIG CONTRAST TO THE COMMERCIAL CENTER A FEW STEPS AWAY.THIS DISTRICT IS FOR THE NEED WHO HAVE NO OPTION BUT TO LIVE IN THIS AREA. 市内非正式居住区是一个混乱和贫民窟 , 与几步之遥的大商业中心相 比是天壤之别。这个地区的居民处于生活窘迫别无选择 , 只能住于此。

INTRO| 简介 此项目选址于蒸水河以北、华源路以南、一环西路以东、 雅士林欣城项目以西之围合区域。占地 180.8 亩。 建筑含大剧场、非遗传承中心、影视厅、群众文化培 训展演基地、青少年活动场所、美术展馆等。 新建的影视艺术中心将承担地方戏剧展演、影视播放、 引进高雅音乐艺术、举办群众(青少年)艺术活动、 开展各类艺术培训、举办重要会展和会议、传承和保 护非物质文化遗产等社会公益性职能,为市民提供高 品位的文化艺术服务。建成以后将成为衡阳市群众(青 少年)艺术活动中心、非遗传承基地、文化产业的品牌、 文化交流的中心及高端美术书法展示交流中心。

INTRO| 简介 ROOMS TO THE PEDESTRIANS AND THUS ENHANCE THEIR PARTICIPATION. 校园中心位于中心连接宿舍区域 , 教学面积和体育中 心。设计的目的是激活领土并创建一个路径为学生和 员工。 通常学生中心是空的 , 除非有重要的事件。然而这种架 构充分利用不同时期和提供空间用于各种目的。在行 人的途径边布置展览空间 , 从而增强他们的参与。 FACTS

THE CENTER IS LOCATED IN THE CENTER OF OUR CAMPUS WHICH CONNECTS THE DORMITORY AREA ,TEACHING AREA AND THE SPORTS CENTER. THE PURPOSE OF MY DESIGN IS TO ACTIVATE THE TERRITORY AND CREATE A PATHWAY FOR THE STUDENTS AND THE STAFFS. USUALLY THE STUDENT CENTER IS VACANT UNLESS THERE ARE IMPORTANT EVENTS.HOWEVER THIS ARCHITECTURE MAKE FULL USE OF THE DIFFERENT TIME PERIODS AND PROVIDE SPACE FOR VARIOUS PURPOSES. CHENGDU RAILWAY STATION| 成都火车站 TRANSPORTATION ARCHITECTURE; NON-LINEAR; ECO-FRIENDLY 交通建筑;非线性;绿色建筑

INTRO| 简介 BETWEEN DIFFERENT TRAVELING PLATFORMS. 车站使用纯形状连接南北广场。树冠状的平台成为车 站的一个延伸。火车站利用其巨大的体量统领周边地 区。车站屋顶的形状和其本身良好的排水功能都来源 于传统的中式屋顶概念。 车站是一个巨大的建筑群 , 连接各种交通方式。也为乘 客提供了一个方便的方式换乘并缩短不同的旅游平台 之间的距离。

FACTS

THE STATION USES ITS PURE SHAPE CONNECTS THE SOUTH AND THE NORTH SQUARE.THE PLATFORM CANOPIES STRETCH ON AS AN EXTENTION OF THE STATION.AS TO THE ELEVATED LEVEL THE RAILWAY STATION DOMINATES THE SURROUNDING AREAS USING ITS GIANT MASS. THE CANOPIES TAKE CONCEPT FROM TRADITIONAL CHINESE BUILDING ROOF WHICH IS AMZING IN DISCHARGING RAINWATER. THE STATION IS A BIG BUILDING COMPLEX,WHICH CONNECTS THE TUBE, TRAIN,COACH AND BUS .THE INNER TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM PROVIDES THE PASSENGERS A CONVENIENT WAY TO CHANGE TRAVELING TOOLS AND SHORTEN THE DISTANCE

INTRO| 简介 THE SITE CONTAINS SEVERAL NEWLY DEVELOPED SMALL TOWN BLOCKS LOCATED NEXT TO A RAILWAY STATION WITH A CRIPPLING TRAFFIC.

FACTS

AS A NEWLY DEVELOPED TOWN THE TERRITORY ITSELF IS FULL OF INCONVENIENCE.THE SITE IS PROVIDE A HABITAT FOR LOCAL PEOPLE ,RICH AND POOR. OLD SHABBY HOUSES AND UPSCALE MODERN ARCHITECTURES PILE TOGETHER.THE FUNCTION OF EACH BLOCK IS SOMETIMES A MESS AND THE PUBLIC SPACE AND PARKING SPACE ARE INSUFFICIENT. IN THIS DESIGN THE SITE IS DIVIDED INTO TWO PARTS WITH DIFFERENT ALTITUDES TO AVOID THE

COEXISTENCE OF PEOPLE AND VEHICLES WITHOUT ENDANGERING THE ECONOMIC VALUE OF GROUND FLOOR COMMERCIALS. 基地包含几个位于火车站旁边新开发地块,有严重的 交通问题。 作为一个新开发的地区,本身有诸多不便,并不能为 当地人民提供一个很好栖息地。古老破旧的房屋和高 档现代建筑堆叠一起。公共空间结构混乱和停车空间 不足。 项目设计时,有意通过不同高度将基地分为两个部分 , 以避免人员和车辆的共存 , 而危及地面广告的经济价 值。

CHENGDU JINHE HOTEL| 成都金河宾馆 URBAN RENOVATION; NEW & OLD ARCHITECTURE 城市更新;新旧建筑

INTRO| 简介 WITHIN THE SITE THERE WERE FOUR OLD TREES WHICH NEED TO BE PRESERVED. AND I USE STAIRS AND SPLITLEVEL MARKET TO ENHANCE THE CONNECTION BETWEEN HUMAN AND NATURE. 有几十年历史的金河酒店 , 位于历史遗迹宽窄巷子和公 共公园之间。因此 , 设计必须结合现代建筑技术与传统 的成都文化。 随着城市的发展,原来酒店显得有些过时急需更新。 然而旧建筑本身所代表的历史沉淀又激发设计师想要 尽量保护它。 设计整合周边公共空间 , 让建筑面向大众敞开。酒店设 置开放空间 , 庭院和错层式的市场以提升人流活动和商 业利益。设计利用楼梯和错层式的市场,保留了基地 内部四棵老树 , 以加强人与自然之间的关系。 FACTS

JIN HE HOTEL, WHICH WAS BUILT SEVERAL DECADES AGO, IS LOCATED IN THE CITY CENTER BETWEEN THE HISTORICAL SITE KUAN ZHAI ALLEY AND THE PUBLIC PARK.SO THE DESIGN MUST COMBINE THE MODERN BUILDING TECHNIQUES WITH THE TRADITIONAL CHENG DU CULTURE. THE ORIGINAL JIN HE HOTEL IS BECOMING OBSOLETE AS THE CITY DEVELOPS. HOWEVER THE OLD BUILDING ITSELF REPRESENT THE HISTORY OF THAT TIME AND THE DEVELOPERS WANT TO PRESERVE IT. IN THIS DESIGN I INTEGRATE THE SURROUNDING PUBLIC SPACE AND INTRODUCE THE PUBLIC TO THE COMPLEX. INSIDE THE SITE I SET UP OPEN SPACE ,COURTYARD AND SPLIT-LEVEL MARKETS TO ENRICH THE ACTIVITY AND INTEREST OF THE RE-PLANED HOTEL.
