Daily Life in Honshu, Japan

January 18, 2012

by Zachary Peters Life in Japan today is different, but similar to life in the US. There are about 125 million people living in Japan. Many live in high rise apartment buildings. The villagers usually live in houses with grandparents or sons and their family. Most families life with the parents and one or two children. Japanese people also live in western style houses. Japan is a literate country. Just about everyone can read and write. People who live in Japan start school in April at age 6. They can stop at age 15, but most continue to get a higher education. Many go to “cram” or Juku school to prepare for college. They go Monday through Fri-

day and a half day on Saturdays. Most Japanese meals include curry, noodles, and almost all include sticky rice. The Japanese eat red meats now, too. Children enjoy eating steak and hamburgers. They also eat traditional sushi and sashimi. All children, even two years olds, eat with chopsticks. People in Japan do many of the same things for fun that we do in the U.S. They play soccer, basketball, baseball, and video games. They also enjoy reading. Adults like to play a game like pinball called pachinko. They also like to go to karaoke bars to sing.

near the edge of two plate tectonic plates. The plates of Honshu move very slow. Each of these plates are 50 miles thick. Japan is located on the edge of several oceanic and continental plates. These plates are the causes of many earthquakes and volcanoes. If an earthquake occurs underwater or near the ocean, it can cause a tsunami or a title wave.

Japan is the third wealthiest country in the world following US and China. They do not have a lot of natural resources besides forest. 70% of Japan is forest. Much of their econom y is supported by factories.
