Mary (Massey) Moton was born in Charlotte, NC on June 28th, 1917 to Arthur Massey and Bertha Cureton Massey. The second oldest of four children, her family later moved to WinstonSalem, NC and became known in the town as a proud and hardworking family. Mother Moton’s mother and grandmother raised her to have a strong work ethic and to always stand up for herself. And, indeed she did! As a little girl, Mother Moton felt Mother Mary (Massey) Moton - 1917 - 2019 different from other children. She was unique and chosen by God, but at the time she didn’t understand the great plans God had in store for her life. At the age of 18, on October 1, 1935, Mary Moton married the one and only man in her life, the late William S. Moton. Together, they bore six children, one girl and five boys. They raised their children in the tutelage of the Lord, and turned to God for strength when their first son passed away suddenly from cholera. During this time in Mother Moton’s life, she began to question her belonging and her purpose. But at 23, she received her calling from the Lord and that call changed her path forever. Shortly thereafter, Mary Moton joined the Beulah Tabernacle Church. She became an ordained Evangelist, and traveled around the country teaching and proclaiming the Word of the Lord. For twenty years she counseled young women and men on how to live a fulfilling life. Mother also became a member of St. Ashworth Temple COGIC in Akron Ohio where she served many years and became an ordained Evangelist. Additionally, she was a member of the Prayer Band in Canton, Ohio of which she attended faithfully on a weekly basis. Mother Moton was a gift to every ministry in which she served. When she turned 100 years old, Mother Moton received official acknowledgements from the Governor of NJ, the Mayor of Rahway, NJ and the Presiding Prelate of the Churches of God in Christ International, Bishop Charles Blake. Bishop Blake acknowledged her life as “an example of the greatness of the Lord.” Mother Moton had a special love for the Agape Family Worship Center and the sentiments were mutual. When she could not physically attend church, she

received expressions of love, gifts, and visits. At the age of 102, she spoke publicly about the life she had lived and the lessons learned. By God’s grace, she was able to live comfortably in her last days in the home of her son and daughter-in law William & Kathryn Moton. Mother’s prayer was that her legacy would inspire all those whom she touched. Mary Moton leaves to mourn two sisters, Rose and Willette, two sons, Bill and Michael along with their wives Kathryn and Amanda, daughter-in-law Velma Moten, eighteen grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and eight greatgreat grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, her God-children and a host of spiritual daughters and sons. She is preceded in death by her husband William S. Moton, daughter Claudette Diggs, sons Bobby Moten, Bernard Moton, granddaughters Terri Brinson and Desiree Greer; brother, Edward, and her father, who lived to be 109 years old. Indeed, our Matriarch’s legacy will live on through those with whom she connected.

Psalm 91 Psalms 91: 1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide [1] under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. 3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. 4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. 5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; 6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. 7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. 8 Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.

9 Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; 10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. 11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. 12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. 13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: [2] the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet. 14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. 15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. 16 With long [3] life will I satisfy him, and show him my salvation.
