Saucy Sparkle Tales of tease and all things sparkling from Hobart and beyond! Brought to you by Hobart’s own Diamonds of Burlesque.
The sun rising upon the morning of a scheduled performance illuminates a million things still needing attention. When you remember that this is all in aid of an occupation where the end result is to be wearing little more than Eve, it seems like there is too much sewing, gluing and basting taking up my time. In the weeks preceding and following a performance, my room becomes awash with fabric and sequins. Friends share their seats with shoes, posters and the odd pair of knickers when they need a lift and housemates are apt to discover more glitter in their bowl than food. This is the norm, not the exception. Birthday presents, once requests for ponies and CDs, are now more specific. Feathers, fans and corsets are the order of the day. Although, Dad, if you’re wondering, I still want that pony. That ticking clock is my nemesis, even more alarming is the calendar as I count down the days until the Falls Festival where I’ll be performing in The Village with the Diamond’s for the second Year running. And I love it. The organised chaos, the stress of finding costumes, cutting music, spending more than I earn, I love it all. sLUCY SKY DIAMOND Photograph by EMILIJA SALETA

A huge line up of hot international, interstate and local bands, are giving their time to join the celebration of Tasmania’s Forests. Realising a long held dream by the organisers, the Festival will be a carbon neutral event, running solely on renewable energy, using wind, water and solar generation.

Set in the beautiful valley of Jackeys Marsh, the site offers fantastic views of the Great Western Tiers. The Guided Walks program will give you the chance to get out into the heritage forests and go Wild Caving, led by experts. On site will be a Market Place, yummy food stalls, & a cheap bar.

DANCE - MELBOURNE // MUSCLES
Ice Cream Man
Multitalented musician Muscles also happens to be a happening DJ. Making a sweet entrance with Guns Babes Lemonade and the hit track ‘Ice Cream’, which made it on to the most recent Triple J’s Hottest 100, Muscles will be flexing his DJ skills soon when he heads to town for MS Fest early next year. He also let us know what other sweet treats you can be expecting from his next album… For people who know your music, but not aren’t familiar with your DJ set – how do the two compare? DJ Sets are totally different to playing live but I bring the energy of the LIVE performance! It’s great to see my fans more up-close, and the opportunity to play other people’s music that I love, and mix it in with my own. How does it change the way you perform? I got dance moves I do with certain songs, it’s kinda funny, no clichés though, except maybe crotch thrusting. If there’s a microphone nearby I might shout out during a track. It’s exciting to be road testing songs from my new album, see how the crowd re-acts to a new Muscles song they haven’t heard before. Do you approach a festival set differently than a club or other smaller gig?
No sound checks, no keyboards and equipment, no extra luggage, just rock up with my favourite records. I guess when you’re playing festivals to mass crowds you’re expected to play tunes everybody knows. F*ck that, I’ll just play what I like. Remember that computer game Lemmings? How comfortable are you on stage compared to being in the studio? Playing/DJing on stage is like playing two soccer games in a row. It’s very physical, like an intense workout. In the studio you’re sitting on your arse all night trying to write the next big hit. I’m going to balance both in the foreseeable future. With songs like ‘Chocolate Raspberry’, ‘Lemon & Lime’ and ‘Ice Cream’ on your debut, what sweet foods are going to feature on your next release? Haha! I guess it was a phase that’s gone past, the new album is more about love, sexual fantasies,
growing up, memories from childhood etc. More mature I guess, although I feel myself getting more immature the more I grow older.
“…DJ Sets are totally different to playing live but I bring the energy of the LIVE performance!...”
Aside from ice cream, what’s the best thing about summer? Water skiing, wake boarding, my goal I set myself this summer is to master the wake-skate. It’s like a wake board/skateboard on the water but you don’t have your feet strapped in. Also big floppy hats, sunscreen, neon zinc, I don’t wanna be a wrinkly prune and get skin cancer. I protect myself from the sun! What artist on the festival stage are you most looking forward to seeing over the coming months? Looking forward to seeing Bliss n Eso, Anna Lunoe, The Aston Shuffle, Hook n Sling, Tommy Trash, Sam La More, Bass Kleph, Miami Horror and maybe Goodwill. Get ready to spend a summer day with the muscle man himself, and party down to Muscles’ DJ set at MS Fest! 0 6 February @ Inveresk Showgrounds, Launceston

METAL - NSW // PARKWAY DRIVE
Driving Force
From the serene beachside paradise Byron Bay, arrive a band that’s anything but. With full force metalcore action coming at you, Parkway Drive are one of Australia’s most successful hardcore bands, perhaps best known for their stand out Horizons. With a new album not quite ready to be unleashed on audiences, the band are touring the country this summer – including a trip to our very own MS Fest. How do Byron Bay and metalcore go together? They kind of don’t, haha! There is a small but solid hardcore scene in Byron, but other than the kids that go to shows I don’t think anyone else in the town even knows we exist. As one of Australia’s most successful hardcore bands, do you get any perks like better parking spots? Not really better parking spots, we do seem to get more parking fines though. Score! What drives you to keep going with the band? The same thing that drove us to start. It’s fun. And we like breakdowns. What’s the strangest place Parkway Drive has taken you? Russia or China. Both places were mind blowing and I really hope we can go back to both.
The MS Fest audience will be filled with fans of all different types of music, how do you think a crowd with members unfamiliar with your band or genre will react to your set? Get involved or get crushed. It’s not really a choice. What’s the greatest thing about playing to a big festival crowd? Pogo. I like making people bounce and it seems to work better on larger scales, especially at festivals. Your third album is, well, on the horizon. What can fans expect this time around? Expect everything you like about Parkway, tied to a brick and sunk to the bottom of the ocean. It’s dark, it’s cold, it’s crushing and it’s heavy far beyond anything we have made before. sMEEGAN MAY
PUNK - HOBART // BALLPOINT
Straight to the Point Hobart rockers with a penchant for punk, Ballpoint, are about to record their new EP with big name producer
Kalju Tonuma – but they need your help. In order to rock out in the (fairly expensive) studio, they’ll be holding a fundraiser

featuring a big live show where you can get a sneak preview of the new music headed your way. It’s also a great opportunity to directly support the Tasmanian music scene and the band, and we asked bassist Jordan Hooper why else you should come along.
our vocal delivery. It also sounds HUGE.
Why did you decide to work with Kalju Tonuma on your next album? Kalju is a god amongst mere mortals. His list of previous clients and work speaks for itself really; Bodyjar, Frenzal Rhomb, Jimmy Barnes, Trial Kennedy, Horsell Common. All his work is magical!
Why did you decide to hold a fundraiser to raise money for the Album? Working with a professional in a world-class studio is no cheap exercise nor is recording away from home so we really need all the help we can get.
What do you think he can do for Ballpoint on your next album? Every album that Kal records sounds completely different, which I think highlights the fact that he can really draw on a bands strengths, and I know he puts a lot of emphasis on having really good songs, rather than a bunch of good riffs and melodies. I know with his input Ballpoint will create a world-class record. How will this album be different musically? We have three guitarists in ballpoint now so I think that will make a noticeable difference as it gives us a lot more freedom to write more technical guitar parts without compromising
What are you most excited about as you go in to recording? We are recording at Sing Sing studios in Melbourne which has housed many greats, far too many to mention, just look at the liner notes of any good Australian album and its was more than likely recorded at Sing Sing. It’s the Australian Abbey Road. Also these songs that we have written is clearly our best work so it will be exciting to share them with the world.
Plus it’s a good excuse to road test some of the new material that will be appearing on the album. What can fans expect from the night? I gotta feeling that this night’s gonna be a good night, that this night’s gonna be a good night , that this night’s gonna be a good good night! sMEEGAN MAY As part of their fundraiser spectacular, Ballpoint will be performing with Stand Defiant and Your Demise. 0 11 December @ The Brisbane Hotel, Hobart

TURN THE DIAL TO 11 With Hayley Couper With an impressive list of support slots to her name (including Xavier Rudd, The Panics and Tim Rogers & Tex Perkins to name a few), singer/songwriter Hayley Couper is about to step into the spotlight with her new EP Ships in the Night, and a spot on the bill at the highly anticipated Falls Festival. Pretty exciting stuff, so we asked Hayley to turn up her amp all the way to 11, and tell us what she was doing: 11 years ago… Begging my dad for my first guitar... a girl sized copy of a BC Rich warlock and I still have it. It’s a total axe. 11 months ago… Laying down the rhythm tracks on my first EP Ships in the Night, which is being launched soon. You should come. 11 weeks ago… Playing with my band at the Falls Festival playoffs, which we made it into and are playing at Falls on New Years Eve! 11 days ago… Going night time swimming at Lady Bay on the Peninsula... freezing, but fresh! 11 hours ago… Jamming new songs with my very talented and sexy band for the EP launch. 11 minutes ago… Drinking coffee in my dressing gown. Thinking, ‘I don’t want to go to work today.’ 11 years from now? Practicing Kabbalah with Madonna, or rehab in LA... but most probably living on a little farm, with 10 kids, somewhere in Tasmania.

Aside from the album launch (see the details below!) and the Falls Festival, Hayley is also working on a very special film clip – so keep your eyes peeled and head to myspace.com/ hayleycouperband. 0 10 December @ Republic Bar, Hobart

DUBSTEP - UK // SUKH KNIGHT
New Directions...In Dub
Storming back into the Brisbane and its epic cobra II sound system, Directions in Dub returns for another huge night of all things dub including massive dubstep donkey punches. This time featuring Sukh Knight (UK) http:// www.myspace.com/sukhknight and his hard hitting eastern influenced dubstep, this one is gonna smack you in the bonce. Sukh Knight, one of the youngest DJs ever to tour Australia at 19 hits the country for a string of massive shows this December. Sukh, hailing from East London and with a cultural heritage from the sub-continent combines these influences bringing forward thinking dubstep floor bangers spliced with tabla, sitar, dhol drums, saz and Indian wailing. But don’t be mistaken by thinking this is all brain step stuff. On this tour Sukh is launching his new EP Cheese Loueez featuring monstrous wobbly bass lines and tibia snapping snares, Sukh is playing with his audience and with songs like The Jinglist, Ganja and Knightlife on high rotation at BBCs Radio 1, this young man is transcending genre and has an untouchable grasp on the right mix of deep and fun. Currently Sukh Knight is preparing to support Enter Shikari on their 2009 UK Tour and for those who know this electro-metal hardcore outfit; you won’t be disappointed with what Sukh Knight will serve up at The Brisbane. His Cheese Loueez EP was released in the UK in August this year and as we speak physical copies are on the verge of selling out. It’s fair to say Sukh Knight is True Tiger’s marque signing when it comes to Dubstep. His heavy, grimey, bass laden beats make him one of the most exciting new producer/ performers on the scene and Sukh has been smashing dance floors apart all over Europe. It’s now Tassie’s turn for a dose of the tuff stuff. The Second Directions in Dub show is upon us! 0 18 December @ The Brisbane Hotel, Hobart

Green Fingers All the freshest produce from The Greenhouse, Irish Murphy’s, Hobart. Merry Christmas and happy hangovers Cups and Saucers. Jesum crow we’ve been having a corker time at the Greenhouse the last few weeks, with huge nights of awesome tunes smashing out the sound system and into your ears and beers. Big congratulations have to go out to Ben Wells and the Middle Names, a stalwart band rocking out Irish every few weeks. These boys recently competed in the national final of the Global Battle of the Bands and came second capturing interest from several high level managers, promoters and labels and at the tender age of 18 these boys have got something special going on. You can catch them at the Irish Murphy’s Christmas Eve street party – come down and bounce it out with us! We’ve got some more largies coming your way over the festive season so keep these ones in your heads – these are all fantastic performers ... Thurs 10/12 – James Parry, Darlington, Housework Three of our finest, James has been pumping out the tunes with his new band but will be presenting them solo this time from 9pm. Darlington – fronted by Pat Berechree and his powerful voice rock out with their feel good folk pop and of course Housework, the Frank Zappa band of Hobart pulling out instrumental quirk funk to get you lurching around the d floor. Sun 13/12– Harlequin If you haven’t caught these fine purveyors of medieval dance music before, you’ve really gotta see it to believe it. These guys have hand made all their own instruments in the traditional style including the magnificent hurdy-gurdy – a hand cranked circular guitar as well as tons of other period stuff. Mon 14/12 – Coleman Clan Did I mention that The Greenhouse is now running on Mondays over summer? Well it is, and we’re delighted to be featuring the Coleman Clan in their full power. Likened to the Von Trapp Family Singers, this posse features Chris Coleman of Hannah, Jonno Coleman of Ejecter and their Dad, sister, second cousin and the neighbours dog! (ok I’m exaggerating there) – this family of song all have amazing talents and it’s gonna be fascinating to see what they come up with. Tues 15/12 – Phil Edgeley, Eric Collier (NSW) Back on the road, these slide blues masters present their latest ‘Steel Strung Blues’ tour – with lapsteel, slide and mountains of chrome plated guitars, these guys stomp it up big time. Thurs 17/12 – Muddy Turds, Guthrie, Sara Jane and the Enigma Blues, Home Band It’s a Launceston invasion! With Muddy Turds, Guthrie and Sara Jane and the Enigma Blues all taking the trip south and ably accompanied by folk blues multi-instrumentalists Home Band. This is a variety night in sound, with short sets and vastly divergent sounds all meeting somewhere in between jumping blues and hipshaking folk sounds. Thurs – 24/12 – Street Party! Did I mention we’re having a Street Party? We’re having a bloody street party on Christmas Eve from 4pm-10pm outside Irish and like always it’s FREE FREE FREE! Featuring: Sam Page, Jordan Millar, Ben Wells & the Middle Names, Hayley Couper (with band), Ejecter, Little Cubas, The Overview, New Saxons, HANNAH Us at Irish hope you’re having a bloody great season. Uni’s over, work is wrapping up it’s time to let loose and sink some lagers at Irish Murphy’s the Greenhouse. You guys rock and cheers for all your support over the last year! Peace out folks.

OFF THE SHELF Over the past few weeks at Top Shelf, we have seen the finest that Launceston has to offer and leading up to Xmas will be no different. With acts like The Stoics, Mayfield, Shoe, Nathan Wheldon and The Two Timers, The Dog Line, musically it has been a feast!
Fresh from their acoustic support with Jeff Martin and The Armada, The Dog Line return to haunt the Top Shelf stage on Wednesday December 9. Their first show back in November (after a six month hiatus) saw the band line up completed with bass player Jase Howard joining the ranks. Watching The Dog Line is an intense experience. Be warned, it’s addictive. Offering up their support will be Top Shelf debutantes, Liam Pennicott and Luke Young, who go under the banner of, Guthrie. The Stoics (Wed Nov 18) are truly evolving before our own eyes. As the band has grown together so to has the musical interaction. Individual components are pushing one another to a greater level. The beauty of all this is the band evolves to a new species, one that is capable of more imaginative ideas, translating those ideas and executing those ideas. Another act that is chugging along quite sweetly are Nathan Wheldon and The Two Timers (wed nov 25). These guys take a more “musicians” approach to music, taking a chord and melody progression then playing their parts on top.
Irish Murphy’s 211 Brisbane Street, Launceston
Ciaran of The Stoics (as I’ve said before) is the ringmaster of his show, where Nathan is more the band leader. Two songwriters with very different paths. Nothing shows this more than the two highlights from their sets: The Stoics ‘Submarine Song’. Nathan Wheldon and The Two Timers - ‘Set The Room On Fire’ (I sincerely hope I got that title correct! Sorry if it’s wrong Nathan!). Wednesday December 16 is obviously the week before Xmas and we thought it appropriate to offer up a night that you can forget about the year that was and let loose, boogie hard, get ya bootie on and get ya time to shine! Mayfield will take to the stage and lay down the grooves as only they can supported by hot new comer, Zac Slater. Mayfield is somewhat of a “supergroup” (I use this term very loosely!) with players from many different projects coming together to throw a party every time they play. It should be the perfect way to lead us into the new year.
· Live music 7 days a week· · Great meals in our family restaurant· · Shamrocks restaurant open 7 nights a week· · Wood fired pizza oven· · 3 bars including roof beer garden· · Outdoors in summer & cosy fires in winter· · Accommodation for genuine backpackers·
Lastly we must give Shoe a mention. Hailing from the north-west this three piece power pop act are consistently honing their live show and when they played on December 2 it was the tightest show yet. The songs are super catchy. The arrangements are interesting and fresh. There is no real reason why these guys can’t make it on a national level. We will endeavour to get them back in January, keep your eyes peeled for their next show. Ciao.

GIG REVIEWS
QUAN & CHARLES DU CANE @ The Alley Cat, 23-Oct
PHRASE @ The Republic Bar , 27 November I was running slightly late for this show, but luckily I got there in time to catch MC Dameza, with the Epicentre recordings Crew. Nice new local hip-hop - with a new album to boot. I have seen enough hip-hop to know when it’s good, and these guys definitely heated the stage for Illy and Phrase. Illy’s performance was awesome - the chicks were screaming. I like this artist, he’s fresh. His ‘Picture in My Wallet’ song was huge. As was his rendition of the Pixies anthem ‘Where is My Mind’, which you can catch on his MySpace. With over 100 live shows under his belt, Phrase burst onstage like the cat in the hat, only without the hat and a lot cooler if you ask me. Just totally pumped, for want of a better description. Apparently the band had had a big one the night before at the ARIAs, but you seriously could not tell - their energetic, fast paced set was electric. The band was tight and kooky. Jumping on the foldback speaker, Phrase almost pulled the roof down... I ducked out of the way, being way too reminded of the time the Cosmic Psycho’s came to town (yes, they pulled the roof down). Phrase was joined onstage by the lovely Jade McRae on backing vocals, and Illy by the end of the set. Everyone had a great night. I was incredibly impressed by the quality of this hip-hop band. Hopefully they’ll be back this way again soon. Until then and make sure you keen an eye on local hip-hop scene – it’s gonna be a huge summer.
His body contorts slightly at the microphone as his voice unfurls from guttural groan to strangled croon. Electronic beats throb from his computer. He looks like a college boy with a hint of brimstone – a cross between Ivy League, The Human League and the Leagues of Satan. He’s Charles Du Cane and his layered, diverse pop has the crowd dancing. It’s like the soundtrack to an IT geek’s bucks party. His singing is – let’s face it – eccentric. And what is that thing around his neck? An OompaLoompa’s guitar or a ukulele on steroids? It has no strings but sensor pads seem to connect it to his laptop. Quan Yeomans has graphics, animation and movie clips flashing behind him as he swaps between guitar and keyboards. Despite the heavy use of computerised backing the show has a warm “live” feel due to his energetic vocals and frequent engagement with the over-eager crowd, including much call and response. He wrenches jagged riffs and wailing solos from his guitar and at one point a note on his keyboard goes rogue and he grimaces as he battles to control it, the sound swirling into pleasing cacophony. He is affable and clearly enjoying himself in the intimate surroundings of the Alley Cat. There’s a good mix of hip-hop and cock-rock, blended by Quan’s ‘eighties sensibility (references to Prince, Michael Jackson and David Byrne blip up on screen and in his lyrics). The punchy ‘Year of the Jerk’ and relentless ‘Gimme Gimme’ are standouts and the audience cheers the single ‘The One’. Ironically, he doesn’t regurgitate: there are no songs from that other band he’s in. The night is a celebration of his solo album ‘The Amateur’. The down side to this is that it makes the show a little short and there’s no material to provide the hungry punters with an encore. Winner of the fashion stakes is the man with the Mohawk, clomping boots and ruffled dress. Scary, effeminite – and he could dance! sCOLIN VARNEY

DANCE - MELBOURNE // AGENT 86
Get Smart
Loved by Melbourne locals, it’s been a long mission for Agent 86 and his electro beats. With over twenty years in the dance scene, he’s managed the impossible task of still being a hit with crowds who’ve been alive less time than he’s been DJing. Soon he’ll be heading to Hobart to show us why.

In what ways are you like the original Agent 86, Maxwell Smart? I’m short, I’m terribly unco and, er, I’m not that funny. And I have a very attractive sidekick (my wife). What’s the smartest thing you’ve ever done in your career? Moved to Melbourne. What about the dumbest? I had an alternative DJ name for playing Urban gigs: “DJ Dumb”, so it doesn’t get much dumber than that! I, personally, loved the name (and I’m certain those with a knowledge of hip-hop circa ’85-’89 would appreciate it as well) but virtually nobody got it – not even my friends… What did your years working at Central Station Records teach you about music and people’s music tastes? That there’s good music to be found regardless of the genre and that there’s no accounting for some people’s taste. Did the staff discount come in handy? Kinda. It meant I bought more music, which meant I had to play more gigs to pay for my vinyl habit, which meant I had to buy more music – and so the cycle went… Now having been working the clubs for so long, how do you keep your sets fresh? Is it more than the music? It’s ALL about the music. Nothing else. How do you plan on lighting up Tasmania? No plans beyond what I normally do: play what, I believe, is good music that’ll move the crowd. It’s a simple formula and it works. sMEEGAN MAY Get smart and get to Agent 86: 0 18 December @ Proller, Hobart

DANCE - CANBERRA // THE ASTON SHUFFLE
Shuffle Up and Deal! “…We have got some great new music to unleash on everyone if they are up for it, so fingers crossed you guys are ready for the ride...”
Shoe stomping Canberra duo The Aston Shuffle are back in town with their hot house disc from the 2010 Ministry of Sound Annual. ‘Do You Want More?’ Check out our interview with Mikah and Vance below! What are the best and worst things, music wise, about being from Canberra? On the positive side, being from Canberra sort of sets you apart. There aren’t too many people who have made a living out of the music business in Canberra, so we definitely have a big sense of pride in what do. On the negative side, the small music community means you don’t have many people to bounce ideas off or collaborate with so it can feel a little lonely sometimes. Having said that said there are some amazing artists coming through from Canberra which I’m sure you’ll be hearing about very soon… If you could pick any destination for your next gig, where would it be? Playing at a festival in an exotic location in South America sharing the stage with Soulwax, Boys Noize and The Subs... Good times! You’ve posed for some photos á la John Lennon and Yoko Ono in their Bed-In, why was this a good fit for The Aston Shuffle? Oh it’s not a John & Yoko reference, that’s how we sleep when we’re on tour :) So, sleepwear then – flannel or cotton? In winter definitely cotton but in summer we sleep commando style! Other than the bed, where are you most comfortable – the studio or the stage? We are both equally comfortable in the studio or on the stage, they both play an important role in the life of The Aston Shuffle and allow us to express our creativity in totally different ways... different sides of the same coin I suppose.
always chasing our asses with music deadlines and touring commitments and also if we could get more sleep that would be great... But if this is the worst complaint we have, we really do have the best jobs on the world so we have nothing to complain about at all really! What gets your shoes stompin’? Apart from standing on an ants’ nest too long... Music-wise it’d be artists like The Subs, Ettiene De Crecy, Bloody Beetroots, Boys Noize, Siriusmo, Soulwax, Mr Ozio, the list goes on… You have a disc on The Annual 2010 – so what’s in store for clubbers over the next year? From our experience you can never really know what’s going to happen next, a lot of the music genres & scenes are changing style quicker than dirty underwear. So for us to try and predict the next big thing might be a little hard, we just try and keep our ears open to everything and not get caught up on what the next biggest thing is. What special treats have you got lined up for The Annual tour? Fairy Bread, Party Pies and Cocktail Frankfurts, all the good stuff :) We have got some great new music to unleash on everyone if they are up for it, so fingers crossed you guys are ready for the ride. On the other side of The Annual Tour, you’re heading back to Tassie for MS Fest. What’s great about playing a festival show? We absolutely love playing festivals, we love the fact that the crowds are up for it and you can really feed of them, we have had some very special moments DJing at festivals so we definitely hold them close to our hearts. This is the 2nd MS Fest we have played and we are very excited to be a part of such a worthy cause. And the rides are always cool! sMEEGAN MAY

SPOTLIGHT ON… Discotouch If you frequent the Hobart dance scene, you may be familiar with Discotouch, the well mannered, suit wearing, disco-house DJ. With a feature DJ spot on Triple J, and a new album out, it seems the spotlight is shining on Discotouch right now… How did you come to be Discotouch? Ah! I was originally DJG back in the day, but it wasn’t the most original name I’d ever thought of so I became Discotouch. I’ve always loved disco house, so it was an easy choice. What’s been the lowest point during the history of your musical career and why? Ah there aren’t many really! I have played the odd crazy gig from time to time. At one of these gigs I finished up at about 3 in the morning, and the end of my set was quickly followed by a fight and a guy’s head going through a wall, as the bouncers tried to get rid of him. Interesting times. At least it wasn’t directed at me.
“…I’m also keen to get back into the studio and hitch a ride on the 80s train...” What’s been the highest point and why? I think that would be having a guest DJ mix featured on Triple J back in June. I was invited to put together a 1-hour mix for them, and actually flew up to Melbourne to do an interview for Mix Up. The other big highlight so far would have to be playing at the Ten Days on the Island festival a few years back. I played at The Crystal Palace which was a large dancehall marquee, and playing in there to a few hundred excited dancers was a huge buzz. What is the most challenging thing about being Discotouch? Probably the choice of DJ moniker, as it lends to deserved innuendo and mispronunciations. I guess I set up myself for that one. Not that I’m complaining, mind.

What particular original track are you most proud of and why? The third track on the album, ‘Secret Agent’ has to be one of my favourites. It was a lot of fun to record wah guitar, I’ve always loved a bit of good old wah, and you don’t really hear a lot of it nowadays. That was an old man comment right there! Seriously though, I think the fusion of disco & secret agent themes worked well with the song.
DANCE - SYDNEY // THE BANG GANG DJS
We’re Doomed! With a name like Doom, perhaps it’s no wonder Jamie Doom gives his music a tongue in cheek Emo/Happy Hardcore tag on MySpace, but don’t be fooled – this DJ is happier throwing an electro-house party. Part of the Bang Gang Deejays, fellow member Gus Da Hoodrat describes their formation from a serious of parties; “Well, we were doing a party playing the music that we wanted to hear. Probably doing a terrible job of it, but who can remember such details. And we found that people wanted us to start playing at other parties – which we did – and we let it all get out of our grasp and ended up where we are now… At other peoples parties drinking their drinks and playing music for them…” Often working with Hoodrat in a duo or with
PAGE 20
the full gang, the two are on the tour for their BangGang 12Inches Compilation tour (BangGang 12Inches being their own label). From producing parties to podcasts, the latest Bang Gang offering features tracks from Bag Raiders, KIM (The Presets), Like Woah!, Shazam, GLOVES and many more. Powerful partiers, the two best mates Doom and Hoodrat have been on the forefront of innovation in the dance industry along with their other Bang Gang DJs. Always prolific, the boys are proud to present the compilation made up of all the extra tracks that they and the Bang Gang haven’t quite got on to a release yet. “There are two CDs - one mixed, which Gus and I mixed, and one unmixed,” Jamie says. It’s also the first time a release from the group has come in a more traditional manner, usually they’ll just release vinyl and downloads for DJs and clubs, but now they’re hoping to find a whole new batch of fans with the big name tracks, as well as the local dance acts the boys have discovered themselves. The tour for the CD has included a bunch of the artists featured on the CD, but Tassie will be getting up close and personal with Gus and Jamie – as they’ve come here on their own. But with members of a group known for their amazing parties – there sure won’t be any doom and gloom when Hoodrat and Doom hit the dancefloor this December!
What other artists can your sound be compared to? I’ve listened to a lot of Miguel Migs and Freemasons in the past, so there’s a lot of deep and vocal house influence. Joey Negro, Sneaky Sound System, Jamiroquai have all influenced my musical style, but also Ben Folds Five, Supergrass and Midnight Juggernauts have had an impact and therefore my style isn’t restricted to the world of dance. The album reflects some of the many bands I’ve gotten into the past decade or so, with a strong dance feel to it but aimed at more than just the club market. What are your goals for Discotouch? Get the music out there, playing at gigs interstate and get people dancing! They’re my main goals for the next few years. I’m also keen to get back into the studio and hitch a ride on the 80s train that’s travelling the world at the moment. Lots of new synths and vocalisations to play with. Release a lot of new music, too. Under what conditions should Discotouch best be enjoyed? Any time of the day, if you’re in the mood for a groove and sipping a cocktail. Or if you want to do the hour of power with style, pop the CD on before you head out!
Discotouch’s new album, Pet Radio, will be released on December 7! Head to www.discotouch.com for more details, or check out the album launch below. 0 27 November @ Syrup, Hobart

TURN THE DIAL TO 11 With Appleblim
Bristol based Lawrence “Appleblim” Osborne has been behind the decks for half his life, including a stint in The Monsoon Bassoon. He’s also spent some time spinning records at a second hand record store – but that’s all behind him now as he spins into town this December. So ets get the disco pumping all the way to 11, and find out what Appleblim was doing: 11 years ago… Well, that would been 1998 right? So I was deep into drum and bass, living round Hackney and Stoke Newington in London, going to Metalheadz at Dingwalls and Leisure Lounge, loving the sounds of Ed Rush, Krust, Die, Doc Scott, playing in a band called The Monsoon Bassoon, a crazed acid-drenched pop/psych/ metal/prog band, rehearsing two or three times a week, clubbing two or three times a week, battering my poor ears (BUY EARPLUGS NOW KIDS!!!). 11 months ago… Well that would’ve been gearing up to Christmas, and actually, me and Shackleton played at Matter in London, Fabric’s other big superclub inside the O2 arena (aka multimillion pound loss/eyesore The Millennium Dome), which turned out to be a bit of a nightmare! I had a terrible cold, proper headache and running-nose style, and we had to get driven up to London from Bristol as coincidentally Shackleton had a gig there that night. We ended up being 15 minutes late (and I HATE being late!), and I get there, flu-ed up out of my mind, rush into the booth, get my first tune ready, and start to bring it in… ‘hmmm this sounds a bit different to usual,’ I thought, ‘very muffled indeed… hmm… its a mixer I’ve not used before, some proper snazzy Allen and Heath… I wonder if its cos this button isn’t lit up?’ *CRASSSSSSSHHHHHHHH* in comes the tune! Basic DJ rule NUMBER ONE - always check the friggin’ mixer to see if any filters have been left on! I was so pissed off I stopped the tune dead, shouted at the mixer, shouted an apology to the crowd and started all over again! Deary me……!
inhibitions interacting in a music filled psychedelic environment! YES! 11 days ago… I was in Leeds, making a track with Ramadanman…we’ve worked together quite a bit now, its fun coz he’s a badman at synths and arranging, and I really like twisting up samples from all kinds of places… 11 hours ago… I was desperately trying to get my Tax Return done…this is my first year of full self employment, and to be honest, paperwork and organisation have never been my strong points. Music has always been about avoiding real life for me, but now I’m in the really lucky position of being able to get by on just music. Having done music for over half my life (I’m 33!) and never seeing a penny from it, this is something I don’t wanna throw away…so knuckle down and get back to the Excel spreadsheet boy! 11 minutes ago… Having a sausage sandwich with my mates Wedge And Elvis, whilst watching a classic Seinfeld - ‘The Caddy’ - bumbaclart episode! 11 years from now? Well, I’ll be 44 then, so hopefully I’ll be happy, a bit wiser, and still loving music… I don’t really have massive ambitions other than to be around good people and music…oh actually, maybe to own a MASSIVE psychedelic house made out of drugs and money, filled with beautiful lute-playing sirens, who feed me home made hummus and sing the hits of Joni Mitchell to me as I rule from a throne made of jelly?
11 weeks ago… Oooooh 11 weeks ago was just about Bestival time! What a festival, pretty much my favourite I’ve been to so far… Bestival is just such a great place to meet new people and get lost in the spirit of UK festival culture, people without . ISSUE 109 . DECEMBER 9 - DECEMBER 22, 2009

NEW SUPER MARIO BROS WII Nintendo, Wii
Missed the first Assassin’s Creed and wondering just what all the fuss is about? Well, imagine if you will Prince of Persia, Mirror’s Edge and Street Fighter IV smushed into a blender with The Da Vinci Code, The Matrix and The Sopranos and you’ll… erm, probably still be wondering WTF.
Karaoke – it can turn everybody from mildmannered secretaries to muscle-bound tradies into howling banshees. Just add alcohol.
If we have to introduce Mario then you’re likely either just waking from a coma or the most ignorant person on Earth. Erm, or perhaps The Who’s Tommy. The little Italian plumber is an icon and, befitting of an icon, much like bands that have lasted the distance (and Fall Out Boy) he has a greatest hits package of sorts in New Super Mario Bros Wii.
We’re talking epic with a capital ‘EPIC’ here, in an open world third-person epic adventure epic that couldn’t be more epic if it were the epic Ben Hur in epic disguise. Epic, epic, epic! Right, now that we’ve got that out of the way… Hoodie-lovin’ Altair is yesterday’s news, for this time around the player, via the time travelling Animus doohickey, takes the role of hoodielovin’ Ezio, a young bloke in Renaissance Italy who’s given some serious avenging to do. We mean serious – this game doesn’t pull any punches at all when it comes to extreme violence or even spatterings of ‘naughty’ words (won’t somebody think of the children?!). Everything from the first instalment has been improved upon several-fold. We were suspicious that screenshots we saw before release weren’t in-game ones – we were wrong, mister. ACII looks utterly stunning. Plus, extra elements have been added to flesh out the gameplay, including some neat-o riddle/puzzles and greater depth to weaponry, fights and missions. Hurtling over rooftops has never been so much fun – and this time our protagonist can actually swim, just one more improvement to proceedings. Oh, and you get to play with some of Leonardo da Vinci’s wonderful toys – score!
Whilst Sony has cleaned up with their insane array of SingStar games, Microsoft is fairly new to home karaoke. The original Lips hit last year, wisely armed with a localised song list (including Farnesy AND Barnesy) and very funky microphones. New downloadable songs have dribbled out since; however they’re a piddle compared to Sony’s torrent of around 1,000. Number One Hits redresses that balance a tad, while adding some tweaks to the mix. The menu’s been revamped, theoretically to make it easier to find songs. We could be cynical and suggest that listing all downloadable songs in the main list is a cash-grab, but we won’t. Oh stuff it, we will – beware any pointed-up boxans who let this one loose at a party, ‘cos you’ll find your account flatlined when you sober up. Otherwise, Lips does a decent job of the party thang. Rather than featuring levels like SingStar there’s just one, with bonus enticements to encourage those who dare wield the mic. With 40 (apparent) number one hits there’s heaps on offer, from ’80s faves to recent chart stuff with many cheesy stops between, but little for those of an even slightly alternative bent save perhaps for Beck’s ‘Loser’. While we give Microsoft kisses for including the complete Pet Shop Boys ‘Always on My Mind’ clip (unlike SingStar – GRR!), Lips remains behind its competitor in slickness, features (no online competition? Come on!) and song availability. ChapStick – stat!

DANCE - SYDNEY // TIMMY TRUMPET
Electro Symphony Not to be confused with other alliterative club kid Tommy Trash, Timmy Trumpet is the man with the brass horn, and also the only DJ/ instrumentalist to make the inthemix50 top DJ list. Timmy Trumpet plays the trumpet, which is what makes him stand out amongst the club crowd – and has gotten him noticed by big names such as Sneaky Sound System and the Potbelleez, who’ve handpicked him as a support artist. He considers himself somewhat of a drifter, happy to adapt to different DJs and music and party with his “dance floor whore” wireless microphone.
Equally happy to head out on his own, Timmy takes a break from being one of Australia’s hottest DJ sidekicks with his solo show and residencies in clubs all over the country, and even heading to Asia for shows in Singapore and South Korea, and is planning on a summer in Europe after the Aussie summer festival season. You may have heard his recent single ‘This is How it Goes’, which made it on the ARIA charts, and he’s just released his debut EP – Sunrise. So sound the horns and get up and enjoy this one-of-a-kind DJ!
Timmy’s about to get brassed off in Launceston! 0 24 December @ Lonnies, Launceston
Giving the classic side-scrolling platform gaming style that dates back to the original Nintendo Entertainment System in the ’80s a Noughties spit and polish, whilst combining the best bits from the little guy’s numerous adventures through the years, isn’t all NSMBW does, though. As well as looking funky-as, new levels have been concocted, with new enemies and new weapons with which to fight them, including a propeller suit and a penguin suit – flippers and all. Awwwwww! The big new addition to the series, however, comes in the form of simultaneous four-player aceness. Yep, Mario, Luigi and two Toads can all party-on at once, and best of all you can be all sugary niceness and cooperativeness, or as nasty as the nastiest of nasty things and push everybody around as if you’re channelling Wario. Sweet! Mercifully there isn’t a lot of gimmicky waggling, save for the odd flick or tilt. The Wiimote is held on its side much like a traditional controller, and that’s the way it should be. Original frustrations remain, but it wouldn’t be Mario without them. 25 years on, Nintendo still rule the platform genre – let’s-a go! 9/10 sAMY FLOWER
Films based on Japanese anime are a bit like second-hand board games – mostly in one piece, but it’s aggravating when you discover just how many bits aren’t there. And like the recent Speed Racer, the feature film adaptation of Dragonball Z, imprudently titled Dragonball Evolution, is like Mousetrap without the Mouse – gimmicky, colourful and pretty to look at, but not much fun. An early contender for worst film of the year, director James Wong’s (Final Destination, TVs The X-Files) film really only succeeds in one thing – giving its lead actor a great haircut (yes, they’ve mastered the Goko haircut from the cartoons – with the spikes). But even a creative moptop won’t keep the most easily pleased of viewers entertained for an hour-and-a-half. Flat from go to whoa, the thinly-written, comatose bore tells the story (if you can call it that; wouldn’t surprise me if the script consisted of four dot points) of a young messyhaired teenager named Goko – yeah, a white kid named Goko – played by Justin Chatwin (War of the Worlds), whose in search of seven mystical Dragon Balls (not in a literal sense – that might have been a more interesting movie). Of course, the evil Lord Piccolo (James Marsters) is also after the magical balls but with the help of new trainer Master Roshi (Chow Yun-Fat), Goku’s gonna be ready to fight for ‘em. This is just artery robbery. With kids having to shell up to $15 to see the thing, the filmmakers should be ashamed of themselves. Video-game flicks like Mortal Kombat and Max Payne may only ‘just’ past muster, but this doesn’t even attempt to pass itself off as entertainment. If anything, it’s an elongated commercial for a new toy line. There’s nothing in it at all. Chow Yun-Fat, no doubt there for the fat cheque and that’s it, looks as bored as batshit; Phantom of the Opera cutie Emmy Rossum seems to spend her time telekinetically letting her manager know this isn’t the film she signed on for, and former Buffy favourite James ‘Spike’ Marsters, becoming somewhat typecast as a fiend from elsewhere, looks plain bored (not to mention uncomfortable in that wacky make-up; seems there was some paper mache masks left at the end of 1987’s Masters of the Universe). In fact, the only chap seemingly enjoying himself is Justin Chatwin, as Goko - but then, considering his last flick was Superbabies : Baby Geniuses 2, he’s probably not at a stage where he can tell a good film from a bad film. Extras A couple of featurettes that are likely to be skipped over by the pre-teen target market. CLINT MORRIS

CINECISM
Interview : Paranormal Activity It was 2006 when young actress Katie Featherston spotted the audition for Paranormal Activity. “There’s an acting website that sends out little clips about what parts are up for grabs - I heard about it through there. I applied online, then auditioned, and wound up with the role!’ Though the film’s writer/director (San Diego resident Oren Peli) would only be able to pay Featherston and her co-star Micah Sloat a derisory $500 for their time, that was still more money than Featherston had in her savings account at the time. “I was really struggling as an actor. I was spending all of my time just going to auditions. I went to college and studied acting, and then moved out to L.A right after I graduated, but couldn’t get any work. I was barely making ends meet. I was just trying to get some leverage somewhere. Thank god this project took off ”. Shot for less than fifteen-thousand dollars, and filmed in the writer/director’s own house, Paranormal Activity would take many a cue from the 1999 indy hit The Blair Witch Project, in that it would play out as a scarefest seen through the eyes of a video camera. In it, Featherstone and Sloat would play a couple (Katie and Micah) who discover, by leaving their video camera running at night, that a none-too-friendly ghost is visiting them at night. You never see the ghost - you simply hear him; his footsteps, his thumping on the walls. “Oren wanted to make a smart horror movie – something that wasn’t just all jump scares, and gore, and things like that. He wanted to make an intelligent film that scared you and stuck with you, and I think he succeeded”. In the film, it’s Katie that’s the more alarmed of the two when she discovers there’s a third party in their house. Though she’s never been in such a situation (“I’ve had things happen to me that I can’t quite explain, but nothing as drastic as you see in the film”), she doesn’t think she’d be as stressed out about it as her cinematic-self. “You always bring parts of yourself to a role but the Katie in the movie is definitely not me, and I definitely wouldn’t behave like her in that situation. I think I’m pretty laid back; I don’t get that stressed about things”.
were exhausted, but it was great fun”. A couple of years later, after the film had won raves at film festivals, Dreamworks – the company run by one Steven Spielberg – asked for a copy of the movie. Spielberg decided he’d watch the movie at his house – alone, in his room. Half-way thru the film the doors to the room locked from the inside, and he couldn’t get out! Spooked out, the famous director had to call a locksmith to get him out. He didn’t return to the movie until the next morning – and afterwards, returned it in a garbage bag. “Yeah, he was like ‘I love the movie, but take it back!’,” says Featherston. The film left such a mark on the Jaws director though, that he urged his company to buy it. Immediately. Featherston says whilst she “always believed in the project, and we always wanted to make it worthy of a big screen release” she never expected someone like Steven Spielberg would buy it. “What has happened is just above and beyond of anything we could have imagined! It’s been a whirlwind!” Since its release earlier this year, Paranormal Activity has now made over $100 million dollars. “It’s like it’s all happened overnight. It’s been very exciting”, says the actress. And has success changed her? “Yeah, I’m in a limo right now….. Ha! No, I’m at my parent’s house, just chilling out with the family”. The best part of it all, says Featherstone, is knowing how much audiences are enjoying the film. She’s also enjoying talking to its fans on the web. “I have a fan site and a twitter account and I love chatting to those that have seen the film. I’m on Twitter when I’m in bed”, she laughs. And while Spielberg and company brainstorm over the inevitable sequel, Featherstone’s back home to spend some time with her family.
Due to budget constraints (and the fact that her co-star was due back at college in a week) the entire shoot of the movie lasted seven days.
“They’re happy to have me home. And best of all, I don’t have to rush back for a crumby day job”.
“We filmed pretty much around the clock. It was fast. Oren was great to work for – he was excited and dedicated, and had a really clear vision of what he wanted. We worked hard hours, and we

THE MIDDLE NAMES/LAVISTA ROCK - HOBART // BEN WELLS &
Winners Are Grinners
(Soundscape To Open 1/2 Hr early!) The summer festival season is upon us, and some pretty big ones are coming up, including Tassie’s own Soundscape. With headliners like recent ARIA Award winners Empire of the Sun, the festival has a pretty impressive line-up – to which you can now add two lucky local bands – LaVista and Ben Wells and the Middle Names. LaVista picked up a spot from the Soundscape playoffs, and Ben Wells and the Middle Names (also scoring high at the playoffs), picked up the spot in the High School and College comp. We caught up with Declan and Ben from BW&TMN and Benny and Simon from LaVista as they look forward to their Soundscape debut! Ben Wells & The Middle Names

How does it feel to know that the festival is opening early just to fit your band in? Ben: It’s really good to see that Tasmania is supporting young local music, and to see that they appreciate our music enough to give us a spot at the festival.
“…It’s amazing knowing that we get to play on the same stage as this group of talented musicians...” What are you most excited about for the performance? Declan: The connection between us and the crowd, just that good feeling when everyone gets dancing and enjoys themselves! It’s amazing knowing that we get to play on the same stage as this group of talented Musicians. And what about the day – who are you looking forward to seeing? Ben: Really looking forward to see The Panics, Empire of the Sun and a full set by LaVista. An Australian band like the Panics have a major influence on our style of music, to see them would be great. Have you been tempted to make any outrageous requests on your band rider now you’re playing such a big event? Declan: Haha I’m sure we will think of something for a laugh! A carton of beer would certainly go down well! Who are you most hoping to have a beer with backstage? Declan: Definitely the lads from Empire of the Sun, but we are pretty excited to meet all of the bands. Mind you, we are keen to have a beer backstage full stop. After Soundscape – what’s next for Ben Wells and the Middle Names? Ben: Our new album Branches is being released just before The Festival. We are concentrating on getting our name out there in Tassie. We are also touring the East coast to promote our new album.

La Vista What was your first thought when you found out you’d won the chance to play Soundscape? We were thrilled to hear we had won the place, as the competition was very strong. The other bands were amazing and it was a great show all round. What are you most excited about for the performance? The big stage! Definitely playing on a big outside stage and meeting the other bands. Our songs really lend themselves to this type of environment.
“…Our songs really lend themselves to this type of environment...” And what about the day – who are you looking forward to seeing? Roots Manuva! I remember buying some of his vinyl back in college when I thought I was a DJ! And Empire of the Sun’s pretty headpiece. Have you been tempted to make any outrageous requests on your band rider now you’re playing such a big event? Of course, that’s why you play in a band! We are all fans of Iron House beer, so anything from their range would suffice nicely! Who are you most hoping to have a beer with backstage? Roots Manuva... been practicing my Fresh Prince of Bel-Air flow... After Soundscape – what’s next for Ben Wells and the Middle Names? I have always had a symbiotic relationship with weirdness. Regular readers will be well aware of this. I’d just like to share with you my latest trip to Oddsville. This could be any day as this sort of thing happens a fair bit, I’m almost used to it, but the different flavours of weird that come my way are still a novelty. Have you ever had one of those moments where you have the distinct sensation you’re caught in the Twilight Zone? “It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears and the summit of his knowledge” To quote the 60’s TV show. Well, I think I’m having one of those lives. The other night I found myself on a deserted street in the middle of the city, screaming wildly at a lamppost. To passers by, this would probably put me in the clearly mental basket, but I had good reason for what I was doing. This does make me wonder that if I had good reason to be publicly losing my mind, then maybe all the other freaks that get around muttering to themselves have darn good reasons as well. Maybe I’m just a freak with high standards. How
did I come to be screaming in the streets I hear me ask myself. Come with me on a journey… I regularly conduct ghost tours through the city of Hobart. Sometimes they can get freaky, sometimes not. It’s the nature of the supernatural. I started noticing that every time I walked past a streetlight on the corner of Murray and Davey streets, it would inexplicably turn off. EVERY time I walked past it. I started using it on my tour as a joke. “I can turn that street light off, merely by thinking about it” Blink. “There you go.” People were amazed. But it got a bit out of hand. A few nights back, I did exactly the same street light thing and blink, it went off, but then I had to walk past it again twice during the night on my way home. True to form it blinked off both times I went past it. Three times in one night was beginning to creep me out a little bit. I was wondering if I was some sort of electro magnetic person like Dennis Thatcher. I kept walking and as I passed an electrical shop, all the lights in the entire shop went off. Ok, this is getting a bit too freaky now. I’ll just get home as quickly as I can. I walked up Criterion Street
trying really hard not to make eye contact with anything that required electricity. As I stepped onto Bathurst Street, literally as my foot hit the pavement, all the street light in the entire street went off. That was the catalyst for my raging. I didn’t know who was doing this or how, but someone was definitely messing with my head, so there I was on a darkened street screaming “What the F*ck is going on?! Where are you?!” Just the sort of behaviour that’s guaranteed to win you some new friends. Needless to say, I went straight home, locked the door and didn’t make toast. The odd thing is, that I’ve been past the same blinky street light a few times since and it’s stopped turning off now. Is there meaning in all of that? I don’t know. But it is a completely true story. MICK LOWENSTEIN Mick’s next show will be each day at the Falls Festival! 0 30 December - 1 January @ Marion Bay, Tas
