INDIE - LAUNCESTON // THE STOICS

“Every time Toby starts his car three species go extinct”

Hit Machine Having just held release parties for their new EP Death Machine with some homemade fun, indie rock locals The Stoics are ready to take their show to a bigger audience, with shows lined up at both the upcoming Falls Festival and the Forest Festival. Beau and Toby let us know all about their other Death Machine. If you were about to face a death machine, how would you spend your last day? Hacky-sack and auto-poetry. Maybe a dip in the pool. Who or what out there do you think deserves a visit from a death machine? Toby’s car, it is the biggest pile of shit ever. It causes a lot of internal conflict in the band as well as being solely responsible for global warming. Every time Toby starts his car three species go extinct. What exactly inspired the title? Trumpeteer extraordinaire Hugh Montgomery’s t-shirt. That and the idea that this whole “life” bag is a lead-up to the inevitable event of death: a big machine with a myriad of benevolent tentacles and hairs. Joy. If The Stoics were a machine, what would be your product/function? Product: booty. Function: general purpose. sMEEGAN MAY

“…I don’t think I’m a superstar yet, I think I’m just kinda super....” INDIE - USA // KAKI KING

Long Live the King Kaki King claims she is no superstar, but it doesn’t stop her being super. As the first female on Rolling Stone’s “guitar god” list, the girl can also sing and compose great music – definitely super. Virtuosity meets indie rock, with the product leaving a few jaws on the floor, and she’s sure to do the same when she makes a flying visit to Tasmania for the Falls Festival. Hi Kaki. Where are you calling from right now? I’m in a car on my parent’s street. I had to drive up to the top of the hill to get reception. It’s right in the middle of Atlanta, but it’s in a valley so we have to drive to the top od the street

to get reception. Are you recording in Atlanta or are you taking some time out? I’m just taking a break from recording for the holidays, so I’m visiting my family. Do your family follow it in a traditional sense? Not really. We just eat ourselves silly, that’s what it’s about. Well let’s somehow connect music and food, because that’s why we’re talking together. Yeah, let’s do it! Food and music and sex all affect the same part of the brain, did you know that? No! Tell me more. Well that’s all you need to know. Food and sex and music all stimulate the one part of the brain, on the same wavelength or something. Oh, which part?

No f*cking clue. [laughs] Well tell me something about the recording of the album. What’s been the biggest pain of the arse so far? Oh, start off on the negative! [laughs] Honestly though, I’ve tried to improve myself as a singer and a songwriter for years now. I think that I’m hit or miss sometimes, and I think that everything is working but a few versus here and a few choruses there that I have to change. So that’s the one thing. The music just comes out an it works, that’s the easy part. It’s the lyrics and the singing. But I do think that it’s a struggle for everyone…I think people agonise over lyrics and singing more than they do any other part of the music process. Alright. Now, I’ve got a list of things that read like you’re a superstar. You recorded

with Timbaland, were in a mash up with TuPac…that all sounds like you’re killing it at the moment. Yeah, but I’m ready to get back on the road. You’re coming down to Tassie? Yeah. What do you know about Tasmania and the Falls Festival? Absolutely nothing, other than everybody raves about it! Cool. You’ll probably just be doing the fly in, fly out thing though. Yeah, unfortunately. That’s the life of a superstar, yeah? I don’t think I’m a superstar yet, I think I’m just sDAVID WILLIAMS Find out just how super. 0 31 December @ The Falls Festival, Marion Bay

“…[Tasmania is] such a magical place...”

WORLD - NZ // MIHIRANGI

HappyTravels A friend to Tasmania (especially our forests!), Mihirangi is on her way back to town to bring once again her one-woman musical journey, enriched by her New Zealand heritage and connections to musical cultures all over the world. Strong willed and supportive of many important political and environmental issues, the multi-instrumental songstress is on her ‘Furture Producer’ tour, giving fans an opportunity to invest in and help produce her upcoming album Somebody Shake That Tree.

You call yourself a world citizen on your MySpace. Where do you call home these days? That’s always a hard one because I’m a gypsy… I’ve been on the road touring 90% of the last 5 years. NZ is home because it’s where my family is (and my cat) and Oz because it’s where my music has grown and is where most of my friends are. What place in the world has had the biggest impact on you, musical or otherwise? Mokau on the West Coast of NZ, it’s where my family are from and I miss it so much. What’s the most impressive location you’ve performed in? Camp Weld amongst Tassie’s old growth in the Weld Valley singing around the campfire with the Weld crew. It’s such a magical place and the Weld crew are truly inspirational and there are a few talented musicians amongst them too. What’s one of the strangest experiences you’ve experienced while on tour?

. ISSUE 110 . DECEMBER 23, 2009 - JANUARY 5, 2010

In Canada I met some First Nations from the Coastal Salish who told me I needed to meet with the Haida Gwaii Grandmothers, they gave me their names and phone numbers to contact them. The next day we were doing an 8 hour drive to Nelson in the Rockies, the van broke down half way there so I started hitch hiking. 10 to 15 cars went past… eventually the car that pulled over was the two Haida Grandmothers whose names I had been given the day before. Freeeeaky… that happened a lot on that tour. If you had a week off from touring right now, where would you go and what’s the one non-essential item you would take? I would pitch a tent in the Tamar Valley in Tasmania and the most NON-ESSENTIALs I would take would be John Gay and Robin Gray of Gunns Ltd. I would spend the week fervently impressing upon them the values of Nature. On what kind of a journey do you hope your music takes people? Out of the box and onto the dance floor… that

place where they’ll express themselves as they truly are. Is there anything you’re looking forward to when you your journey takes you to Tasmania? To get down to the Weld Valley and sit with the giants and just breathe them in. Visit the Huon Valley Environment Centre and catch up with the Weld crew. To play for all those wild & crazy Tasmanians! And am looking forward to seeing the support bands play live. sMEEGAN MAY

“…You could go on if you wanted to, and just pretend, but we just want to go out on our own terms...”

ALEKS AND THE RAMPS Destroy the Universe with Jazz Hands Fresh out on Stomp, ‘Destroy the Universe with Jazz Hands’ is the second single from Aleks an the Ramps album Midnight Believer. Melbourne based and self-purported Indie / Visual / Pop band Aleks and the Ramps are a very cool and interesting band having never seen them live I was not quite sure what to expect from their release.

SNOW PATROL Up to Now I decided to listen to the 2nd disc first, because I have always dug B-sides. Besides, I had found it hard to classify this band up till now. Having never really paid them that much attention and I figured the second album may show a little more history of their sound.

The single is a decent indie pop hit. It’s hard to describe, but it reminded me of lots of the elements of 70s music mixed up together in a modern blender. At first I wasn’t sure if this band was trying to be Bowie or Bjork. From the opening wafting choral lines, I was captivated by this single, which also featured four songs with varying degrees of indie pop. Kind of delirious female vocal parts, and quite psychellic mixing left the listener slightly blissed out. At first I was reminded vocally of the Beat Happening. Not a bad thing in my books.

From the opening strands of acoustic guitar on ‘Take Back the City’, I noted gentle build ups to hard beating rock... sweet vocal breaks and the second track had me sold by the first cords, it reminded me of the cure meats sting meets, mournful guitar solos, bopping blip pop. This guy has a sexy voice.

The second track ‘Save your Jazz hands for the Dishes’ has a very nice relaxing, post-punk repetition thing going on. The sounds become all washy and the female vocal harmonies sound angelic. By the third track I realised this band was Leonard Cohen. Except not so depressing, and a little more like there was a party going on. Their rendition of Leonard Cohen song ‘Don’t Go Home with Your Hard On’, clarified this. The addition of female vocals on this track were good, but my goodness doesn’t the singer sound like mister Cohen. I enjoyed this single, and considering this is the second single off their album it’s kind of kooky impressive. sZOE ZAC

I usually like my rock’n’roll harder, but I really enjoyed the sweet harmonies and the thrashing it out chorus’ of Snow Patrol. Further into the set I started to hear the band being a bit more experimental with their mixes. It’s still pure pop/rock, but it’s classy. Coldplay-esque. By the time I got the first disc, I had totally decided I dug this band, their slick alternative rock was heartfelt and I was not surprised, judging from the photos on their website, to discover that their actually quite enormous around the world. ‘Chasing Cars’ is a stand out track, with a beautiful sentiment and ear candy production. It’s good to see this band celebrating more than ten years hard rocking. After hearing this double album I felt a bit like I was sharing in their rock journey, The kind words of the lyrics set the listener at ease. I found the whole experience relaxing... there was a few lame tracks but hell, what’s a career with out them? sZOE ZAC

STING If On a Winters Night… Exploring Stings passion for all things winter, I was intrigued from the first gentle strands of this album. A self pronounced evocative collection of lullabies, carols and songs. This album contains an interesting collection of offerings by various traditional and non-traditional artists; including two of Stings self penned works. The gentle muted trumpet intro presents a song reminiscent of Gregorian monks. The God references are thick. It’s a nice arched entrance to a release, which quickly makes way for ‘Soul Cake’. Definitely the Hit of the album, I liked ‘Soul Cake’ instantly, being sold by its Augie March-esque galloping nature and folk sensibility. However, once the Christmas carol riffs kicked in I was shocked. After all, not everyone likes Christmas. On the eighth song I found the Sting I remembered, but I had to wait till track ten to hear the first of Stings hand penned tracks. ‘The Hounds of Winter’ is an outstandingly sad song; yet it almost offers solace in its frozen arms. Sting seems to be battling with dualities of sorrow and joy. I found this song quite paradoxical – I could feel the personal anguish of the sad song setting itself free like a bird singing sweetly from a cage. This album sees Sting matured. It sounded good, all the instruments sang. I enjoyed it - after I got over the Christmas sorrow of the whole thing and realised he was actually trying to cheer us up! sZOE ZAC

OFF THE SHELF Hi everybody! Welcome to the final installment of Off The Shelf for 2009. And what a year it has been. With so many great acts and so many late nights (52 to be precise) it’s hard to choose which ones to mention so forgive me if I don’t include you or your band! The emergence of Frankie Andrews as a premier solo artist who recently released her debut EP, Dance Fire Dance, has been a real highlight. Her stunning performances have quieted the loudest venues, her music and lyrics penetrating the hardened shells that encase every heart. Nice work Frank.

Zac Slater, Jade Howard (Mayfield), Mally (The Dog Line) and Foreign Films

Irish Murphy’s 211 Brisbane Street, Launceston

Summer Edmunds went from playing in a duo to becoming a stand out solo artist and hasn’t looked back. She has just finished a national tour with The Basics, testament to her captivating performances. Kasper are another act that have come a long way and we look forward to their progress throughout 2010. Foreign Films and The Stoics, both with very recent releases, have played some outstanding shows this year. Foreign Films’ delay-drenched rock has submerged audiences in sonic heaven while The Stoics new found folk-twinged sound has taken them to a deeper melancholic state. Both bands went through line-up changes and have resurfaced with a more focused direction. 2010... look out for these two. Guthrie arrived on the Top Shelf stage only two weeks ago supporting rock outfit, The Dog Line. Consisting of Liam Pennicott (vocals/guitar) and Luke Young (kit), Guthrie tore through a set that balanced somewhere between Wolfmother, Black Sabbath and Metallica (circa Black album period). The opening set couldn’t have been better for a revved up Dog Line who riffed their way through another night of debauchery. Wednesday December 23 Top Shelf is holding our pre X-mas eve bonanza with Mick Attard, Foreign Films and Nathan Wheldon and The Two Timers. NW &TTT will provide the perfect way to bring on your christmas cheer with their easily accessible pop, and with Foreign Films bringing the rock and Mick Attard’s rootsy stomp their is a little something for everyone. Come on down and help us celebrate the year that was and the coming holiday season. From both Carl and myself we hope you all have an enjoyable holiday period doing whatever it is that you choose to do. In particular we wish Chris Veevers, Deano, Shaw, Luka Mulligan, Bass Howard (aka Dad), James Harding et al Irish Murphy’s Launceston, Dave Munting and family, Dave Williams, Dane Leonard and Julz the very best for the new year. sCARL FIDLER & GLENN MOOREHOUSE PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONI M Reach for the Top Shelf! 0 Every Wednesday night @ Irish Murphy’s, Launceston

CLASSICAL ROCK - MELBOURNE // THE WISHING WELL

“…Music is everything to us: our work, our party, our meditation, our holiday, our inspiration, our frustration...”

Wishing You Well It takes a bit to scroll through the numerous gigs lined up for The Wishing Well on their MySpace. If you’re wondering why they’re so popular, with consistent dates for (at least) the next six months, it might have something to do with the extremely passionate nature they play their orchestral folk rock. If they had one wish, it would simply be that they continue playing music together, and it seems the Melbourne band have had this one granted – and then some. We caught up with violin player Rivkah, who really wishes you would come along to one of their shows this January! If you could drop a coin in a wishing well and make one wish right now, what would it be? We love coming to Tasmania, and it would be nice if it could float north to Port Phillip Bay like a lost child to its mother, so we could stroll across anytime we want for some fun gigs and cheap Cascade. What’s one thing in your life you wish you hadn’t done? That we hadn’t chopped up and buried that over-playing bass player who could never remember the chords. What’s one thing you wish you had? Found the current members of our band sooner. It’s a difficult combination to find – a group of

six people that get each other personally and musically, are willing to live on the road and with one another, and that accept that part of playing in a band that is establishing itself means not a lot of money and a whole lot of work. It’s taken enough people to fill a small orchestra to find these people. Who’s one person you really wish you could meet and why? Bruce Springsteen for his inspiring music, humble manner and amazing on stage presence. You guys have a LOT of gigs lined up for the next six months, is it like your wishes have been granted? It’s more like the fruits of our hard work have been granted. It’s a pretty intense lifestyle booking and publicising all our own gigs, organising the logistics for all our tours, writing new songs, rehearsing and playing live constantly. We are used to living out of the van, driving 8 hours to a gig and then doing the same thing the next day. But we are getting better at it after doing it over 600 times in the past 3 years. With every gig we play, we learn more from each other musically and personally and from the audiences who either love us or play pool over the top of us. Do you ever wish you could take a little break? Music is everything to us: our work, our party, our meditation, our holiday, our inspiration, our frustration. It would be like taking a break from eating. We could do it but not for very long and we would just be thinking about it all the time anyway. What’s one thing you wish to see when you make it to Tasmania in January? The Army Reserve restraining thousands of fans at the airport. See you there! sMEEGAN MAY

BLUES ROCK - USA // BOB LOG III

Serious Business… What can one say about a man who uses an audience member’s breast to stir his scotch? He’s Bob Log III and he’s a one of a kind one-man band, with an aptitude for the slide guitar and a preference for motorcycle headgear. His shows have been described as a guitar dance party with plenty of laughs, strange happenings, and plenty of audience participation. We made sure to get the full rundown on what Tassie audiences should be prepared for…

Where have you found the best type of Boob Scotch to originate? Wherever is right in front of me. That’s a lot of places.

What have you learnt from the Bob Log’s before you that’s made you who you are today? What to say when talking to the police, and how to make a room full of drunk people happier than they were before.

Do you think masking your face makes you a better, freer performer? Not having a mic on a mic-stand makes me a freer guitar player. Any guitar player that has to compromise his guitar playing by leaning into a mic-stand is wasting valuable time and energy, not to mention money. Screw you mic- stand manufacturing cartel of slavery!

What was it about the slide guitar that caught your attention? The in-between notes. The almost.... the freedom of in the middle of where you are supposed to be. That’s what I like. How have you seen the role of breast instrumentation evolve throughout your career? Evolve? I made one song along with the sound of breasts. It was a good one... ‘Clap Your Tits’. Not many people actually clapped them along with me, but some did. You know who you are! After that I can’t think of where or when anyone would even attempt to borrow peoples breasts for sound. At least I tried.

How does the hangover compare to regular scotch? You laugh more. A lot more. What are you hiding under that helmet? Beauty, ugliness, a famous face? Not hiding at all, and I am beautiful. I just like to sweat a lot.

“…. Screw you mic- stand manufacturing cartel of slavery!...”

Other than getting their tops off, how should Tasmanian fans prepare for a Bob Log show? Polish your dancing shoes, brush your teeth as you will smile a lot, practice your wiggle, lock the door… but leave the window open as you will lose your keys! sMEEGAN MAY If you’re up for some toetapping tunes as well as some on-stage shannanagins, then head to Bob’s big show! 0 26 December @ The Brisbane Hotel, Hobart

Nick Jay 0 26 December @ Flamingos, Hobart Born in Australia, Nick began DJing in the early nineties, spinning trance and commercial club. After hearing the innovative sounds of house music coming from Europe in the 90’s, Nick immediately made an official switch to house, starting to remix tracks and making private bootlegs. It was with his first single release ‘I Don’t Give a Damn’ signed to Ministry of Sound that Nick established himself as an up and coming new producer. The record had extensive radio airplay peaked at number 11 on the official Australian Aria Club Charts, followed by his second single ‘Pour it On’ (including Thomas Gold & Sam La More Remixes) peaking at number 8.

Over the years Nick has played in some of the most popular clubs throughout Australia, New Zealand and in the UK alongside the best DJs on the scene - his current favourite is regular resident at RISING (Dayclub) Sydney. Nick’s productions have become something to count on in the international dance charts. Tracks like ‘Nick Jay & Dany Wild Feat Nicole Tyler – Castaway’, ‘Headstrong Feat Andrea Britton – Fallen’, or ‘Zach – Lady (Hear Me Tonight)’ have been known to appear on the play lists of many well known DJs and with more productions coming in the coming months he hopes his name will become familiar in the club scene.

DANCE - SYDNEY // THE PING PONG DJS

Ping Pong Party! Fun loving friends Matt Nukewood and Brenden Fing have certainly got game. And that game is ping pong….well, it’s not so much their game as their name – the Ping Pong DJ’s. But their real talent lies in house music and mixing up a thumping soundtrack to great night out! So, lets get this out of the way – do you guys play ping pong much? Hmm. A little. Well, not at all actually. We are both avid FIFA10 players. If anyone in Tassie is up for the challenge, throw it down! Who is the better player? We are both as bad as one another at ping pong – we get sidetracked day dreaming about what nice Thai ladies can do with the ping pong balls… How often to people make ping pong related jokes to you guys? Bad ones – a lot. We still manage to laugh each time as if it’s the first time we have heard the joke. There is actually a movie with a ping pong related theme called ‘Balls of Fury’ that you should check out before we head down… it has some fresh material. Why the name? Is it the way you bounce off each other? We will run with that! But we were stuck for a name for a party that we had coming up, with Stupid Fresh (UK) and Kid Kenobi headlining. After a few beverages we thought it sounded like a fun name, and it stuck. We started playing together under Ping Pong DJ’s to accommodate more guest DJ’s at the party, and the bookings started to flow from there. It’s almost a love story…

What is it about house music that gets the Ping Pong DJ’s so excited? As cheesy as it sounds, house music is about unity. It can bring so many people together and make each and every one of them have the same feeling inside. It’s also the cause for some massive f*ck off parties and a reason to drink with your best friends…Love it! What makes a house music crowd different to, say, an electro one? There is really not much difference. Maybe a few fluoro singlets [laughs]. But electro simply took over, or became ‘the new’ house music with the emergence of guys like Bang Gang,

“…As cheesy as it sounds, house music is about unity...” Ajax and Soulwax etc. It was a cool period, linking fashion and music so tightly, but its great to see house music starting to peak again, particularly the Dutch sound. Loving that big room, hands in the air shit. The crowds are pretty much the same = awesome. So how should the Tassie crowds prepare? Start the night before – order your favourite Chinese take away to line your stomach for the Christmas eve drinking, make one last wish to Santa, and then leave everything but your party mode behind. We are going to make this a Christmas to remember… sMEEGAN MAY Get ready for a family game of ping pong this Xmas Eve! 0 24 December @ Hotel New York, Launceston

DANCE - SYDNEY // ACT YO AGE

Act Yo Age! Having released the second volume of their Sweat it Out! CD in May, the boys from Act Yo Age are ready to get sweaty in Tasmania! We heard from Shivers about what age he’s planning on acting when he hits Syrup in January! When was the last time someone told you to act your age? 1986 – My mother, it was one of her favourite sayings. Ohhh, and in 2009 – My girlfriend last week when I got home at 4pm from the previous night out. At five years old, what did you want to be when you grew up? Ambulance Driver, firefighter…or anything that involved a loud siren and flashing lights. How old were you when you started to get into dance music? 16, well over a decade ago. Did you have any awkward teenage moments? So, so many that you would need to add three extra pages to this fine publication for me to tell you half of them!

“…You’re old enough to enjoy the finest things in life, yet young enough to not sense your mortality...” What was the first thing you did, or first place you went, when you finally came of age? Hmmmmm, tricky…coming of age has a million meanings. I would like to think that I am still coming of age. If you could be any age again for a day, which would you choose and why? 23, my favourite number. You’re old enough to enjoy the finest things in life, yet young enough to not sense your mortality. What age should audiences be acting like at your upcoming show? Over 18 – for legal reasons. sMEEGAN MAY

So act whatever age you want, but try and catch Act Yo Age! 0 9 January @ Syrup, Hobart

Keeping Kool

HIP HOP/DANCE - MELBOURNE // DANIELSAN

“…I’ll be honest, it was tough deciding where to [spend New Years], you know, New York, Brazil, Tasmania, France...” Deciding how to spend your New Years Eve can be a tricky one – and there are so many great choices this year! From the Falls Festival to the Taste Festival, to the Bay Hotel bonanza with none other than Danielsan from Aussie hip-hop pioneers Koolism. We turned it over to Dan to tell us why we should ring in 2010 with him! What can Koolism fans expect from your solo DJ set? Hmmm, well, there will be me, the turntables which I will manipulate in a wild and crazy fashion, as much actual vinyl as I can lug on the plane, maybe some new Koolism tunes, all kinds of crazy ass music that will blow minds and make rumps shake, as they say. You’ve said in the past that you’re more interested in the old school way of doing things as well as the new electronic. What are the positives and negatives of both? Well, both old and new styles have their pros and cons, I can’t get into that. I enjoy what’s great about anything regardless of such details. I rock computers and I spin old records. I take pictures with my old Canon SLR and with my mobile. I’ll barbeque and microwave at the same time just to confuse you. Sometimes I do things that make no sense too, just cause they are more fun.

SPOTLIGHT ON… Anfcore This week we shine the Saucy spotlight on DJ up and comer, Anfcore, who’s also gained a Halo – he’ll be performing there in a big Boxing Day bash! How did you come to be a DJ? Living in Sydney and going to all the raves & club night week in week out started to take a control over my music career I have always loved music since I was young and have always be fascinated with DJs , so came one summer of 2003 in Sydney CDB at a Nightclub called Globe, That’s how I started my DJ Career.

How do you plan on approaching the NYE set? I don’t do “approaching”. I dive in with my eyes closed. Best NYE ever? There’s been so many crazy ones…It must have been so good I can’t remember it. Or, I can’t incriminate myself by telling you. How about worst? That must be the one where I was hoping to get back together with my ex girlfriend and she told me to get lost, I was kind of depressed. Apart from that, my NYEs are usually pretty good. How do you feel about spending your New Years in Tassie? Well I’ll be honest, it was tough deciding where to go, you know, New York, Brazil, Tasmania, France. But what counts is good people, good music and good vibes, not the place, so I just picked the destination with the shortest flight, and I’m bringing the music and the vibes with me. Actually I have friends in Hobart, and some of my peeps from Melbourne will be there. I have a feeling it is going to be awesome. What special things do you have planned to make it go off? I’m thinking of launching some small rockets from the DJ booth, but not sure I’m going to get clearance to go ahead with that. Otherwise I’m thinking I’ll kind of rip it the hell up andMAY play sMEEGAN Catch Danielsan with Carus & the True Believers, Cam Tapp & local supports! 0 31 December @ The Bay Hotel, Hobart

Really only one and that is Rob (Hardforze/ Weaver) Francis this guy has literally put Australia on the map for UK Hardcore and now his Hard Trance/ Hard Style productions are phenomenal. Under what conditions should Anfcore best be enjoyed? At any club after 10pm! Shaken not stirred! Check out Anfcore at Pitch Black Summerstyle. 0 26 December @ Halo, Hobart

What’s been the lowest point during your musical career and why? Would have to be whilst living down here and being booked to play at a rave in Sydney and not being able to go up due to work would have to be my lowest point in my career! I don’t like to let the people down. What’s been the highest point during your musical career and why? Would have to be at Pitch Black Euphobia @ Halo and playing September – Cry For You (Hardforze Remix) and having the whole crowd dance & sing along to the lyrics. What is the most challenging thing about being a DJ? Having to be able to play the tracks everyone likes, I do my best to play tracks that will get the dance floor moving and the people singing. Who are the DJs that you look up to? . ISSUE 110 . DECEMBER 23, 2009 - JANUARY 5, 2010

HIP HOP - SYDNEY // KILLAQUEENZ

All Hail the Queenz’ Taste The KillaQueenz met in 2000 during rehearsals for the Olympics Opening Ceremony. Since then it’s been game on for them in terms of producing their own special brand of female driven hip hop, and now they’re ready to give Tasmanian’s a taste of what they can do – with a show at the Taste Festival and the Falls Festival! What would you say are the biggest differences between Australian and international hip hop? These days Australian producers & MCs have defiantly stepped it up sound wise, so I guess the major differences would be lyrical content. We live a completely different lifestyle but we can still express a message through music. There isn’t much female hip hop in the mainstream – how do you think it’s different from what the Aussie guys are doing? It’s not so different, the only difference is that there are not as many chicks on the microphone, DJing or Producing as there are males - therefore there’s a male dominance. That’s no drama though, the ladies are coming!

It comes naturally for us; we don’t choreograph our shows but we have always loved to move to the beat, which works well for both of us.

“…It’s all about fun and feeling the festival vibe. Dance or put your hands up just get into it...”

Who are the women in the industry that you look up to? There are so many but on the top of the mind it would be MC Lyte, Salt N Pepa, Queen Latifah, Rah Digga, Jean Grae, Eternia, Floetry, Mary J Blige & all the women who are spreading good vibes through music worldwide.

And what do you want to tell audiences through your lyrics? All types of stuff like ‘Kick in the back Door’ if they don’t let you in. ‘Break the Rules’ to get paid for all the people doing what they have to do to survive. ‘The Bizness’, which is about getting your hard work done and having some fun.

What exactly were you doing at the Olympic Games ceremony when the two of you met? We were being bored! The rehearsal were long days of waiting till it was our turn to do something, so we met one day and said hello to each other, sparked up a chat and before you knew it we were reciting our favourite songs.

So how should Tasmanian festival goers prepare for a KillaQueenz show? Super hype ladies on the mic kicking wicked flows with cuts from DJ K-Note…. It’s all about fun and feeling the festival vibe. Dance or put your hands up just get into it. We are so excited to get down to Tassie…

As dancers, how important are visual and movement elements to your live shows?

WHAT’S THE STORY? With Tristan of LABJACD

Managing a powerful nine-piece band is no mean feat, especially when you also double as the trumpet player, but Tristan Ludowyk (who does just that) seems to take it all in his stride as he takes care of the big bad funk band LABJACD. Tipped as “one of the best live acts in the country” by Rolling Stone, LABJACD are unafraid of a party and also happen to be gorgeous, hyperintelligent and incredibly talented…for more about that one, we asked Tristan, What’s the Story? Behind your band name? A band name didn’t come that easily to us. With 9 decision makers there was a lot of options floating around but none seemed to work. Eventually we wrote down all the first letters of everyone’s names and set out to find a word rather than an acronym. Eventually

the word ‘LABJACD’ appeared. About how the band got together? The band came together over a short period of time. It started out with an MC, a Trumpet, and a rhythm section. As the tunes developed over time, so did the band, adding more, vocals, percussion, horns and turntables. Of the first gig you ever played together? The first gig we played was a tiny ‘Singer Song Writer, bar in North Fitzroy. We played to a smattering of people armed with just a few riffs and some loose arrangements. Of the last time you were completely pissed off? There is very rarely any ‘pissed off-ness’ in the band. There ain’t no time to waste being pissed off.

Of the last time you were in trouble with the law? We’re all grown-up now! We don’t get caught None of the members of LABJACD have been in trouble with the law for many years.

Behind your most prized music-related possession? Well maybe the band itself and all the things we have learnt and all the amazing experiences we have had over the years.

Of the last famous person you met? LABJACD has had the opportunity to play with some great musicians over our time. We shared the stage with Los Van Van and played at WOMADelaide 2006 with some of our heroes

We’ll be writing about your band in five years? Hopefully you’ll be continuing to write the same good stuff you are writing today. That we’re all gorgeous, hyper-intelligent and incredibly talented.

Behind your most prized non-music related possession? I probably couldn’t speak for the whole band, but I think the members of LABJACD have many very precious things in this world. Friends, Family and Kids are probablay the most prized of them all.

LABJACD will be performing at the Taste Festival on the second of January at the Festival Club. The festival runs over the dates below: 028 December – 3 January @ Various Venues on Hobart’s Waterfront, Hobart

Circus Freaks Considering member Samora describes of his act that “I’m merely trying to get something positive out of the fact that I’m stuck as a freak,” you start to get an idea of just what Circus Horifficus has on offer. With a retro feel and some weird and wonderful acts, it’s a circus for the adults, especially those with a taste for the unusual.

So, why is your circus so horrific? Samora: Horrific is what the public labeled us in the early days, so the name kind of stuck. I actually think seeing Bridget’s semi-naked form moving gracefully upon the pool of shattered glass is quite beautiful and I find it highly erotic. Bridget: Thanks, Squid! I’d say the same about you, but you just look stupidly silly and have the strangest body I’ve ever seen. And I’ve seen a few. Samora: It’s all about having a laugh, really. I think we just have slightly dark sense of humour. You need to cut us some slack -we live half way up a mountain and only come down to perform. Which do you prefer, Ringling Brothers Circus or Cirque de Soleil? Samora: Honestly, I think both of them are commercial franchises that represent the McDonalds of the Circus world. It’s like asking a local singer/songwriter if they prefer Britney Spears or Lady Gaga. Bridget: Soleil. Their huge corporate budget allows them to purchase pretty costumes. For people that haven’t caught a show, what’s some of the acts we can expect to see? Bridget: We’ve been described in the past as “extreme-slapstick”. I’m the strong women -I like to demonstrate my super-human strength, bone-density and pain thresh-hold. I do this using broken glass, illegal rabbit traps and a

baked bean tin. Samora: I was born a double-jointed rubberman. It hasn’t been a choice, believe me -when you seen me bend, twist and even dislocate my bones for your entertainment, I’m merely trying to get something positive out of the fact that I’m stuck as a freak, whether I like or not. People seem to really enjoy it, which is the weirdest part... How did you put your merry band together and start performing as the Circus? Samora: We were both working on putting together acts about 7 years ago and decided there was strength in working as a duo. We haven’t looked back. Are you ever on the lookout for new and horrific acts? Bridget: We’ve had quite a few guests over the

years and anyone interested in being part of the act is more than welcome to approach us… What special and horrific things are planned for your upcoming show at the Brisbane? Samora: We always like to surprise. For now, let’s just say that if all goes well, there won’t be too much blood. There’ll also be a special, surprise guest, straight from The Falls Festival. Which we’re also playing at, by the way, in The Arts Village. People may have seen us in previous years, as this will be our fourth year there, but we always have new material. sMEEGAN MAY Freak out! 3rd Jan @ The Brisbane Hotel, Hobart

If red tinsel, gold stars and the odd sprig of mistletoe aren’t quite your idea of beautiful decorations, get ready for An EclecticChristmas, acelebration of fresh and innovative artists from a variety of different mediums. Featured for the first time at the Bett Gallery Hobart, we speak to one of the artists, Breon Martin, about his works in the exhibition. Where did the inspiration come from for the series featured in An Eclectic Christmas? The works are similar to the pieces I made when studying sculpture in my second year of Art School in 2002. While at Art School I thought long and hard to try and come up with a good idea ( just something I thought might look good). The idea really just came to me, and I thought I’d give it a go.

Thurs 7th Jan Sara-Jane and others

Which artists do you admire locally? Patrick Hall, Tom Samek and Kevin Perkins. What makes Tasmania a great place to make art? For me materials are cheap and easy to source, and while I was studying art school was just down the road. sMEEGAN MAY

How did you put the pieces together? The pieces are constructed from recycled materials I collect and purchase from various sources which I then assemble and attach to sheet aluminium. How are these works similar to things you’ve worked on previously? I made block lettering using thick timber offcuts in my first year at art school, and these current works are an extension to that theme, only using different medium.
