STEWARDSHIP
The Heart of a Union - John Burgwinkel Aloha I am John Burgwinkel the Local Committee Chair for Philippine Airlines, Honolulu station. I began my airline carrier 40 years ago in June of 1973. Presently I work as a Customer Service Representative in the Honolulu Ticket office and have had the opportunity to work in airport operations performing check-in, weight and balance, baggage service, and cargo. I also worked two years for Hawaiian Airlines and still have many dear friends there. When I began working for Philippine Airlines we were not yet a union. I was the employee representative for the Honolulu Employee Relations Committee which was an in-house program to handle employee complaints and concerns. We were certified by the National Mediation Board on 26 March, 1976 with a vote of 65 to 64. I have had the opportunity to serve the membership in Local Lodges 1213 and 1979 as a Shop Steward, Local Committee Chair, Trustee, Recording Secretary, Secretary to System board, Secretary to Negotiations, Local Lodge Educator, District Lodge Educator and Communicator for the Hawaiian Islands. I believe strongly in unionism. I feel you need to make your company profitable and at the same time your union, which is: we as employees, ensure we are properly compensated for our hard work. My personal experience is when I was laid-off in 1988, my union contract seniority gave me the power to keep my job in another 2
office. When we closed Honolulu in 1998, my union collective bargaining agreement provided me with 50 weeks of severance pay and a three year recall which I was able to exercise when Honolulu reopened. Also, great representatives and dedicated officers have influenced me to being active. AGC Al Carmona was the greatest influence and mentor in understanding what it means to be a union member and representative. Others who also have influence me and who did what they believed was the best for the membership was Bob Quick, RW Thomas, Ken Thiede, Bud Funkhouser, Steve Cooke, Rich Delaney, Samson Poomaihealani, Randy Kauhane, Sandy Olmos, and Dave Atkinson. AGC Art Croker has also been very supportive when called upon. Presently, I work with an Executive Board who are really dedicated and committed to the Local Lodge. We are led by President Brian Simonson and Vice President Dave Figueira. Secretary Treasurer Gerry Liu along with Conductor Sentinel Shannon Robello and our three trustees; Marshall Lum, Randy Bangay, Richard Kaneko are committed to ensure the Local Lodge is viable and serves the membership. Final thoughts “Participate in Local Lodge meetings, Conferences, Conventions, along with Placid Harbor, which will “recharge your batteries”. To paraphrase a famous statement: “Ask not what your union has done for you, ask what you have done or could do to strengthen your union.” The union is what you make it.

STEWARDSHIP
The Heart of a Union - Maria Tusa-Higgins When I was about 10 years old or so (enough to be included in adult conversation), I remember my parents speaking of workplace issues and how they were handled. My dad was a commercial meatcutter in the Boston meatpacking district and my mom was a Special Ed Teacher in Medford, Mass. The same word always came into the discussions, “UNION. I had no idea of the level of involvement then, but I understood the importance by the context in which it was used. I gradually became more familiar with the reasons why my parents respected and engaged in union activity and why the unions' advocacy was so crucial to them. In the early 1980s, which was an especially challenging economic period, they relied heavily on their collective bargaining agreements to keep us afloat and thriving financially.
Through communication with United stewards and Opey Dedon, I was introduced to educators. District 141 was generous with material as well as constant availability of knowledgeable members to network with us and help us spread the facts. Despite some opposition from coworkers and imminent threat from the company, we were able to effectively reach staff systemwide. We had permits to handbill and constant support from the District. We had data comparisons and firsthand experience examples for virtually every contract point in question. On March 7th, 2012, in Washington, D.C., I witnessed the fruition of what I had only dared to hope for - union representation!
When I was hired by People Express in 1986 I was young and naive, but soon after the merger with Continental in 1987, I had some coming of age "rude awakenings". The culture was much more restrictive and inconsistently punitive. Blame games were rampant and discipline was based on favoritism, as were performance review which affected salary increase, or lack thereof.
Since then we have grown into a functional group of stewards whose membership keeps us engaged with challenges of unfair discipline and with communications and requests of management for the betterment of our group. With the challenges have come growing pains and trial by error experience. I choose to remain active and assertive because my coworkers deserve to have what the union truly represents. We are a group that had been deluded. But now, through our union, we can achieve clarity through our solidarity.
For many years I dreamed of reform, but never until the organizing drives of the early 2000's did I get even a bit of tangible hope. The final light at the end of the tunnel occurred when our merger with United finalized and a representational election was called.
The best part is that I can help facilitate anything good for a coworker. I feel fortunate to have this opportunity and appreciate all it has brought and will continue to bring. Fairness is finally on the horizon and the environment is improving steadily.
