Facilitators: John-Henry Lane, Allison Blackwell With the ever-growing presence of hand-held devices in modern culture, it is only natural that educators are tapping into the educational potential they have. Tablets, smart phones, and more are being used in schools to enhance student learning and bring classrooms into the 21st century. This workshop will address the power these tools have, best practices related to mobile devices, and applications available for educators when they utilize these one-to-one devices. Mobile devices can also be used as a tool for formative and summative assessments. Imagine the potential you can unlock for your students!

When most people hear the term "gaming" they associate the concept with the stigma that they will, “rot your brain,” but there is a current movement that uses video games to support instructional initiatives. Stories are a great opportunity for students to express themselves in an academic setting. By the end of the workshop, participants will leave with their own Digital Story and the knowledge needed to implement this instructional strategy into the classroom.

It is perfect for those new to the Nspire and those wishing to learn more about the integration of the latest technology into all grade levels. LEGO Robotics provides a medium to expose students to engineering design and computer programming. Now you can learn how to build and program LEGO robots during this full-day hands-on workshop. During this workshop, teachers learn to use robotics to engage their students in real world problem-solving and collaborative learning while learning math, science, and technology concepts at a concrete level. Attendees will receive a LEGO Mindstorms NXT Robotics kit and LEGO Mindstorms Education software. Districts are encouraged to send grades 4-12 teachers to this session. Cost: $360 per registrant. A registration form requiring Superintendent signature must be completed for this training. A BOCES adjustment to the RIC service contract will follow.

Facilitators: Laurie Yager, Allison Blackwell For teachers who have already participated in “LEGO Robotics : Creating Authentic Learning Experiences�, this workshop will extend their knowledge of programming with the LEGO Mindstorms Education software package to include the use of switches, data wires, variables, and other more advanced aspects of the software. Workshop will also include an overview of the use of Vernier science probes with the LEGO Mindstorms kit. Districts are encouraged to send grade 4-12 teachers to this session. Cost: $360 per registrant, if you need to purchase a LEGO Mindstorms NXT Robotics kit or FREE if you bring your own kit. Lego Robotics for the Primary Level Workshop Date: March 5, 2012

Facilitators: Laurie Yager, Allison Blackwell The LEGO WeDo Robotics kit provides an easy-to-use means to introduce young students to robotics and develop their skills in science, technology, engineering and math. During the workshop, teachers will learn to build and program LEGO models featuring working motors and sensors. Attendees will receive a LEGO WeDo Robotics kit and LEGO WeDo Robotics software. Kits will be appropriate for use with students in grades 2-4. Cost: $170 per registrant. A registration form requiring Superintendent signature must be completed for this training. We will take a look at the 2011 Horizon Report, a joint project of the New Media Consortium and the Educause Learning Initiative. This webinar /Report presents critical trends and challenges facing precollege educators that will affect teaching and learning over the next five years. These trends and challenges are reflective of both the realities of the educational community and the world at large. They are identified to provide a context for the Report’s list of emerging technologies predicted to find mainstream use in schools and K-12 education institutions over the next five years.

PARCC: Matching Online Assessments with Instructional Pedagogies Webinar Date: November 14, 2011

The PARCC Assessments are slated to be computer-based and administered several times per year in grades 3-11. Field testing will begin next school year and full assessments will commence in the 2014-2015 school year. With the shift from paper and pencil to online assessments coming quickly down the pike, we need to make sure our students are prepared. Facilitators: Sheri Perry, Pam Culbertson, Kathy Kaufman Response to Intervention is a multi-tier model that provides assistance for struggling learners to increasing levels of intensity. The model involves the use of research based instruction, universal screening, and progress monitoring, tiered-interventions and data-driven decision making. Effective 2012, all school districts in NYS will be required to have an RtI program in place for grades K-4 in the area of Reading. Many districts are currently implementing RtI at multiple grade levels. Technology can help districts with RtI assessment, data tracking and analysis and intervention. During this session, administrators, teachers, and technology coordinators will gain an awareness of how technology tools can assist them as they work to refine current RtI models.

Leadership University Online Professional Development Workshop Schedule: 2011-2012 School Year Please note: There is no cost to the district for up to 20 teachers taking these online workshops Districts can have up to 20 teachers participate in Online Professional Development throughout the school year through the Model Schools Service. The online workshops are tailored to contain approximately 5 hours worth of instruction which is the equivalent of a full-day workshop. School districts decide, on an individual basis, how their teachers are reimbursed, whether it be inservice credit, professional development hours, etc. To register for Online Professional Development, contact your district’s Site Administrator.
