Fáilte Fáilte chuig réamheolaire IADT. Is institiúid ar leith í IADT in Éirinn. Cé go bhfuil sí ar cheann de 13 Institiúid Teicneolaíochta seo an t-aon Institiúid Ealaíne, Deartha agus Teicneolaíochta. Student Profile

Student Profile

Aveen Moran

Programme: MSc in Cyberpsychology After a significant break from studying I started the Masters in Cyberpsychology in September, 2011. I had a background in computer science and an interest in psychology so it promised to be an interesting course and very relevant to today’s increasingly automated society. It definitely lived up to its promise with the modules touching on so many aspects of everyday life. While there is a significant amount of work required for the assignments, I became engrossed in it as the course content was so topical and stimulating. This course is for people who are selfmotivated and will put in the effort into each of the tasks. There is a major learning curve but there is a great sense of achievement (and relief) when each task is completed. I enjoyed our lectures and appreciated the nature of the small classes. I got to know each of the lecturers and the class of students the year above and the year below mine. All the lecturers are extremely approachable and classmates are very willing to assist with any work that needs to be done.

“Living close to IADT, I have been able to take advantage of the facilities including the Library and the computer facilities. While our lectures are at offpeak quiet times – it is certainly a different campus when the full-time undergraduates are there – buzzing and full of life.” At the moment, I am hoping to seek a new job over the summer. I feel that I have a number of options – working in the IT sector, working with schools on their e-learning strategies, or working with companies on their data retention policies. Studying for my MSc in Cyberpsychology has been a very fulfilling experience and one that I would thoroughly recommend.

Dr Grainne Kirwan Programme: BSc (Hons) in Applied Psychology and MSc in Cyberpsychology I lecture on two programmes – the BSc (Hons) in Applied Psychology and the MSc in Cyberpsychology. Because of IADT’s innovative outlook, my research and teaching encompasses both traditional areas of psychology (such as forensic psychology) and newer, emerging areas (such as psychological applications of virtual reality, artificial intelligence, cybercrime, and the Internet). Because of the encouragement of my managers in IADT, I have the opportunity to teach and research areas that I love and am enthusiastic about, which makes it a pleasure to come to work and to interact with colleagues who are as passionate about their specialisms as I am. The vibrancy of the campus is evident, there is always something happening, and every day brings new opportunities.

“The method of teaching in IADT means that I get to spend considerably more time with students than many of my counterparts in universities would. As a lecturer, this is invigorating – I get to see the enthusiasm that students have for a subject, and in many cases I find that I learn something new from each class that I teach. “ Lecturing staff are encouraged to improve their teaching skills at every opportunity, and many of us have qualifications not only in our specialised fields, but also in third-level teaching and learning. Through a combination of lifelong learning, inspirational managers, dedicated colleagues, and numerous opportunities to expand my skills and knowledge, IADT is an amazing place to work.

The advent of web 2.0 technologies has revolutionised the way in which humans interact with the internet. In addition, it enables researchers of human behaviour (and of other disciplines) to do things not possible using traditional research methods. This certificate provides a brief overview (as an introduction or a reminder) of the scientific method and basic research skills, terms and procedures. Then it builds on these by exploring the ways in which the internet can support traditional research methods and also the ways in which it can be used to conduct research in more innovative ways. Throughout the course the research methods are discussed in the context of real research studies. Thus the focus on the internet as a research tool/method is often complemented by examples of studies of human online behaviour.

Directorate of Creativity, Innovation and Research IADT’s strategic vision is to be at the forefront of research and innovation at the convergence of the arts, technology and enterprise, in a way that maximises our contribution to Ireland’s creative economy. The Directorate of Creativity, Innovation and Research has recently been established to drive the further development of research at IADT, to enhance our supports for start-up enterprises in the fields of technology and digital media, and to maximise our engagement with industry. Three main areas are relevant to postgraduate and professional development, namely Research, Innovation & Enterprise and Part-time Programmes.

Research The Directorate of Creativity, Innovation and Research promotes and coordinates research at IADT in accordance with IADT Research policy. Most research is actually conducted within our 2 faculties. Over the years we have led and participated in many EU and Nationally funded projects in areas such as Mobile Technology, mLearning, Pedagogy, Entrepreneurship, Creative Arts and Media and Assistive Technologies.

Masters by Research To be eligible for consideration to undertake a programme of study for a Masters (Research), a candidate must have obtained a standard of at least Second Class Honours in an approved primary degree or equivalent. Normally the duration of studies leading to the degree of Masters (Research) is two academic years from the date of admission on the Masters register. Students will complete a research methodologies module and will have at least 2 designated supervisors. They will have access to IADT facilities including library, computers, hot-desk and student services. A small student travel fund exists. IADT is interested to hear from prospective Post-Graduate students at any time but we aim to have 2 calls per year where we advertise Research Projects which applicants may wish to apply for. We also invite proposals originated by applicants at these times. In this latter case applicants may propose ideas and IADT will attempt to find matching supervisors. Depending on funding availability fees remission and/or stipends may be available and this will be made clear at the time of each call. Where stipends and fees remission are not available fees are payable. For more information please contact our research administrator Linda Carroll on (01) 239 4644 or linda.carroll@iadt.ie.

Research Themes IADT conducts Post-Graduate Research up to Masters Level (Level 9) in the areas of Creative Arts and Media, Public Cultures, Entrepreneurship, Applied Psychology and Digital Technologies.

Research, Development & Innovation at IADT

Creative Arts and Media This cluster embraces disciplines that are practice-based and professionally oriented. This includes Visual Arts, Visual Communications, Photography, Film, Animation, Broadcast Media and Design for Stage, TV and Film. The National Film School is a recognised centre of excellence at IADT. A key aspect of programmes at IADT is the integration of theory and practice. In the domain of creative arts and media, IADT is distinctively well-placed to provide a research base that spans the spectrum from those who describe themselves as ‘practitioners’ or ‘artists’ to researchers working in the same field from well-established humanities backgrounds. Therefore, practicebased research and more traditional forms of academic research are carried out alongside these disciplines. IADT participation in the HEA PRTLI funded Graduate School of Creative Arts and Media (www.gradcam.ie) represents a significant opportunity to advance the work of the Creative Arts and Media cluster. The partners in this project are NCAD, DIT, IADT and University of Ulster.

Public Culture Studies/Entrepreneurship The Centre for Public Culture Studies (www.iadt.ie/publiccultures) functions as an ‘umbrella’ organisation for a variety of taught and research programmes as well as for on-going research and dissemination projects, and critical debates on relevant current issues. The Centre focuses on a number of key themes in the area of Public Culture Studies to reflect national, European and international agendas. The themes include: Work and Migration Citizenship and Identity Public Space Public Communication Public Arts and Cultural Interaction Public Policy Globalisation Public culture research seeks to interrogate the ways in which the public sphere, with all of its attendant cultures and conventions, has been created historically as well as altered under contemporary cultural, economic, political and social conditions.

Applied Psychology/Digital Technologies The Centre for Creative Technologies and Applications (CCTA) (www.ccta.iadt.ie/ccta/index. html) seeks to draw together the expertise and research interests of the academic staff and postgraduate students in the areas of Psychology and Technology. ‘Creative Technologies’ is concerned with people-centred technology in a digital environment. The CCTA’s goal, through both taught programmes and research is to explore the interaction of people and technology. This goal finds expression in a range of existing disciplines such as Audio/Visual Technologies, Gaming, Multimedia, Psychology, eLearning, Assistive Technologies, Teaching and Learning, eBusiness, and emerging disciplines such as Cyberpsychology.

Mark O’Connor Programme: Business with Arts Management (2004-2008) I chose IADT because I found that it was the only place in Dublin I could pursue a degree of this nature. I wanted to improve my understanding of The Arts from the perspective of business management - at the time I wanted to set-up and run my own record label. The greatest aspect of IADT is the relatively small class sizes, 40 or so. Some of my friends went to other colleges and were daunted by class sizes in the hundreds – pretty scary after coming from a standard secondary school class - as a result some of them struggled to make friends. On the other hand, I knew all my classmates on a first-name basis. Nearly ten years since I started, and I still speak to a number of them on a regular basis. Business with Arts Management attracted people with all preferences. Some of my classmates saw the course as a stepping-stone to break into the arts world, while others saw it as a business course. There is an emphasis on group work throughout the four years – so, with such an eclectic group, people were forced to broaden their horizons if they wanted to get by.

Unfortunately the record industry collapsed during my time in IADT, so I had to change my plans. I completed a Masters Degree in International Business in DIT which, ironically, led me to a company called WorldNet, which has its offices in the Media Cube Incubation Centre at IADT. WorldNet is an international, secure Online Payments Gateway which provides a range of card payment processing solutions to its clients. When I started in 2009, as Sales Manager, WorldNet was in the very early years of its existence. The Media Cube provided an incubation centre which allowed WorldNet to share knowledge and experience with the other internet-based start-ups in the building. Since then, WorldNet has doubled its employee numbers and entered markets such as the US, UK, Spain, France, Sweden and Latvia – as well as becoming one of the largest payment gateways in the Irish market. Since leaving IADT, the college has contacted me in order to reflect on my time during the completion of the Business and Arts Management course - I think this emphasises IADT’s desire to constantly improve the course for future students. I hope my feedback improves your experience. Good luck in whatever you choose!

Christina O’Donovan Programme: BA (Honours) in Animation I began the Animation program in 2005 with a love for Animation and Storytelling and knowing that someday I wanted to create pictures for a living. My four years studying Animation was a wonderful experience. During this time I learned all aspects of Animation Production from concept to finished film, and through our project work and experimenting with different styles of animation on our own short films, I soon realized my passion lay in the Art Direction and Story Design aspect of making animated films.

I knew in my final year I wanted push my Design and Storytelling skills further and combine what I had learned from animation and moving pictures with Illustration. As most of my short films and artwork were aimed at young children, creating children’s books was the next step for me. So after I graduated from IADT I moved to Cambridge, UK, to study a Masters in Children’s Book Illustration at The Cambridge School of Art. Not too long after completing my Masters, I was picked up by an agency specialising in Children’s Illustration and have been working on creating the illustrations for children’s books and art licensing projects ever since. I have worked with clients and publishers in the United States as well as the UK and Ireland. Currently, I am back living in Dublin creating my work from the Media Cube at IADT. The Animation course opened up so many opportunities to explore other creative fields within my filmmaking and it equipped me with the skills I needed to pursue the career I have today.

Innovation & Enterprise

Innovation & Enterprise IADT is committed to ensuring that our teaching, learning and research all translate into a beneficial contribution to the local and national economy. We regularly undertake collaborative research projects with industry partners of all sizes, notably through the Innovation Voucher scheme, whereby our staff and postgraduate researchers help SMEs overcome technical and creative challenges. With construction of a new building progressing at speed, The National Film School at IADT will benefit from state of the art HD studio facilities which will be available for use by industry partners on a commercial basis. IADT is also home to the VLAB, a semi-immersive 3D virtual environment that allows users to interact with their surroundings. The VLAB is available for use by students, staff and industry. Through our technology transfer service, we help IADT staff and students to undertake research and develop technology which we can licence to industry partners or which could indeed form the basis of a spin-out start-up company. Our Media Cube Incubation Centre supports early stage companies in the sphere of digital media and technology. The Media Cube is home to 21 companies employing over 70 people. From September 2013, we will be running the New Frontiers start-up support programme in collaboration with DIT and Enterprise Ireland. IADT is also a partner in the consortium of Institutions behind Ireland’s National Digital Research Centre (NDRC), which offers a range of supports to digital start-up projects: www.ndrc.ie. Programme: Bachelor of Business (Honours) in Entrepreneurship and Management (2010) Since leaving IADT, I have been fortunate enough to find myself a career that utilises all of the skills I have learned during the course. I decided to pursue a career in recruitment as I have always enjoyed the challenge of building relationships and being held accountable for my own successes and failures. As a recruitment consultant within the pharmaceutical industry, my role involves setting out a strategic business development plan, building upon relationships with multinational organisations and working in partnership with them to find the best engineers and commercial executives for their organisations.

As a recruiter, my annual salary is based largely on fees earned from clients. I find this to be a fantastic example of an intrapreneurial role, developing my own business, earning my own money, yet with the support of an established brand; Life Science Recruitment. Having worked previously for a larger, more generalised recruitment company, I have realised the importance of specialisation. In the future I see myself setting up a specialist recruitment company focused on providing organisations with support on talent mapping, pipelining and progression planning.

Resources and Facilities IADT offers excellent facilities across our specialist programmes. As we are the national centre for programmes in art/design, film, media and interactive media, IADT provides a range of specialised, industry-standard equipment, including TV and Radio studios, digital video editing, photographic studios, including digital photographic techniques and advanced workstations, e.g. Silicon Graphics and high-end Macintosh and PC platforms. Spacious and well-equipped studios provide up to date equipment across a range of art disciplines. Extensive computer laboratories are also available for both general purpose computing needs and high-end specialised needs for multimedia design, development and programming. Laboratories and workshops for electronics and networking are also provided. The Library has an area dedicated to electronic media, with PCs, Macs, wide screen TVs, DVD players and numerous Internet resources. For more information or to discover how to use “your” Library, please log onto http://library.iadt.ie Our student restaurant provides hot meals and snacks from Monday to Saturday (on those Saturdays when IADT is open). IADT has an all-weather floodlit football pitch for use by Clubs. The new National Film School Building, designed by John Parker of ABK Architects, is currently under construction and will be completed in time for the beginning of the new academic year in September / October 2013. Our facilities will then be without doubt the best in Ireland, including the first HD TV studio in any academic institution in the State - and only the second, after TV3, in the Republic. This state-of-the-art building has an overall floor area of 1302 sq.m (14,015 sq.ft). The main technical spaces are two new TV / film studios with HD capability, and the larger studio is 200sq.m with a clear shooting height of 6m and a motorised lighting grid. The smaller digital effects / green screen / news TV studio is 45 sq.m. and there will also be two new radio studios. In addition, there will also be control rooms, a scene dock, lecture rooms, a newsroom, office space, and an equipment stores / workshop. The NFS Building has been designed to also allow two outside broadcast units to operate and link into the production facilities and / or the studios. There will be an official opening ceremony in late autumn, to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the NFS, although we have been teaching film in Dún Laoghaire for almost thirty years. Seventy-eight Founding Sponsors have made donations to the National Film School. They consist of independent production companies from film, animation and television, broadcasters, facility houses, distributors, advertising agencies, individuals, and other industry friends. We are most grateful for their support.
