4CITY IN THE GREEN DIP

THE WHY FACTORY_ GREEN DIP WORK TYPE: Group; Academic Exploration LAUNCH TIME: November, 2019 MAIN CO-WORKERS: Rogier Tamminga; Siddharth Jain; Yuchen Li PERSONAL CONTRIBUTION: 10% Database, 30% Script, 20% Detail Modeling TUTOR: Winy Maas; Javier Fernandez; Adrien Ravon; Lex te Loo <l.teloo@tudelft.nl>

The Green Dip, suggested by Winy Maas, is the vision for our future cities. We are proposing to cover our cities in flora to create true urban jungles driven by a new analytical tool capable of optimising green implementation strategies. . The The site is composed by worker appartments and industrial building, shaped by the imposing presence of a tram depot dating from 1920s. The design process was carried on through consequential steps with continuous study and elaboration, giving an appropriate answer to a complex design issue. Therefore the conceptual program tool of the Green Maker is built as:Step 1: to identify your input, classing it into building types - the most basic parameter - from which your Green design is based. The backend of tool then analyses these forms in a process of voxelization, the most basic building block on which we can start adding Green. Once we've selected our building type; Step 2: to choose our approach for greendipping a building: Stick, Hat, Camouflag, Lift, Scoop, Infill, Interior, Frame, Perch, Drip and Public; Step 3: to select green elements, which host the plants for our approaches, which are the structural containers used to define 13 types of architectural structures: for example, wall, floor and ceiling but also on columns, or on furniture for Green. Thereafter the program will provide us with a range of information, such as the size parameter and performances depending on the plant type it is hosting - grass, shrub or tree. Step 4: To select biomes, which are essential to create biodiversity in each city, ensure a local, tailored solution and choose plants which will thrive in their specific location, driven by the database of species that we were able to document.

Following pages show 4 examples of the Green Maker with city green performance analysis and specific scene:

Temperate Broadleaf Forest (the New York), one of the largest biomes with the biggest population living in; Taiga (Moscow) with one of the biggest total landcoverage whereas one of the smallest popultation; Desert(Dubai) that covers about one-fifth of the Earth’s surface with the least level of urbanization; Rainforest (Mumbai): the rainforest contains the largest population and also has the highest annual precipitation;

STUDY EXAMPLE 1: BIOME OF TEMPERATE BROADLEAF FOREST, CITY OF NEW TORK (1km*1km)

Roof Terrace

What if New York roofs as we know them were all covered by vegetation? It would not only please every spectator of this new-made view but could also be a real improvement of work conditions in the area. In thise case the green becomes the tectonics. The green creates the form of the city.

Metro Station Technology and infrastructure are also developed in the background of the green city. Trains are expected to absorb air particals and be as silent as possible not to trouble the present fauna and users. They also offer viewpoints over the city that can show what the green dip is all about: how the green can actually shape the whole urban environment.

STUDY EXAMPLE 3: BIOME OF DESERT, CITY OF DUBAI (1km*1km)

Interior Vegetation starts to grow everywhere, with an increasing variation in species. Desert now doesn’t necessarily look like an arid and dusty location anymore. The scene illustrates how people can grow plants in their rooms thanks to the technology of the vertical gardens! Where there were impersonal areas, collective life and the feeling of community have now de veloped around these activities of gardening.
