Introduction | LOVE BADGES

Introduction A badge is a device that often contains the insignia of an organisation (for example police and fire), is a sign of legitimate employment or student status, or simple means of identification. They are also used in advertising, publicity, branding and for ornamentation. Badges can be made from metal, plastic, leather, textile and rubber as well as many other materials and are commonly attached to clothing, bags, footwear and vehicles. Textile badges or patches can be either woven or embroidered and attached by gluing, iron-on, sewn or appliquÊ. Metal and plastic badges are often attached through the use of a metal pin back or safety pin style back. Badges have become highly collectable, in the UK; the Badge Collector’s Circle has been in existence since 1980. In the military badges are used to denote the

5

unit or arm to which the wearer belongs. Similarly, youth organisations such as scouting and guiding use them to show group membership, awards and rank. A Brief History

Badges were popular as jewellery in the Middles Ages, and varied from extremely expensive works to simple mould-made badges in lead or other base metals. From the livery badge various others of service evolved, worn by officials, soldiers and servants. In the British army a metal cap badge denoting the soldiers regiment became standard by the 17th Century. By the 19th Century a badge was an almost invariable part of any uniform, including school uniforms, which in the UK usually still feature the school’s badge in cloth on the breast of the jumper or blazer. Various Uses

Members of fraternities and sororities often refer to the pins that signify their membership as badges. The star-shaped US sheriff ’s badge is one of the best known and the Chairman Mao badge probably the most famous political badge. The BBC Blue Peter badge, given to those who appear on the show or win competitions, is highly collectable, but cannot be bought.

History of my Collection

I started collecting badges when I was very young, if I went on a day trip or on holiday I would bring back a badge from my visit; I gained badges through handme-downs and once people knew I collected badges they would bring me them back from the places that they visited or find interesting ones and give them to me for birthdays and Christmas.

Once I started to get a large number of badges I needed somewhere to store them all together, so I began to use a small denim waistcoat that I had grown out of to pin them to. As I started to get older I lost interest with the collection, but it has always remained in the back of my wardrobe. After over five years of not looking at it I took it out of the wardrobe and spending a large amount of time pouring over this collection that was a large part of my childhood has brought many of those memories back. Animals

Being an animal lover, a large part of my collection consists of animal themed badges, in all shapes, sizes and colours. They also range in expense from cheaper Disney characters, to diamante studded and intricate metal badges. Some are themed and depictions of cartoons while others are more true to life. A few are in support of animal charities, so were given to me by my Aunt, who is a huge animal lover.

Purple Bear

Safety pin 2.4 x 3.8cm

All of these badges are from when I was much younger and within this section there is the first badge I ever received; the purple bear jumping from a box was given to me as part of a Christening present. Although it isn’t one of the more expensive badges, it is probably one of the most special. Other bears are in support of charities, including the Springhill Hospice, which my primary school class sang for in a choral compition.

Sport & Dance Pretty much all of my family support Manchester United football team, so I’ve always had memorabilia from the club and I got most of these badges one Christmas along with a new football shirt.

Sport & Dance | LOVE BADGES

I took lessons in Latin & Ballroom dancing from about the age of seven until I was twelve. A part of these lessons was dance examinations to earn medals and advance to higher stages of the programme. Alongside earning plaques I also received badges.

Hearts | LOVE BADGES

For a number of years, on Valentine’s Day, rather than just being given the last Rolo and a card the tradition in my family was to contribute to the Variety Club charity and exchange their golden hearts; and that is where most of these badges came from. Long Heart

A couple of these are hatpins, which are rare within the collection; one is in aid of a charity while my Nanna gave the other to me. Aside from the green clover, the other badges are for charities and I got them by donating to those that the company I worked for supported. Long Daffodil
