ANNIVERSARY CAMPAIGN FOR DE LA SALLE
Message from the President and Principal
Mark DeMarco ’78 President
Br. Robert J. Wickman, FSC Principal
50 YEARS!
Time enough for De La Salle High School to create a commitment to service and a record of achievement about which we can all be proud. From modest beginnings in 1965, when the school was envisioned to be a student body of 500, our enrollment now stands at over 1,000 young men. But it’s not just about numbers. De La Salle High School, rooted in the 330 year religious and educational vision of St. John Baptist de La Salle and the religious community he founded, the Brothers of the Christian Schools, has developed on Winton Drive a place of learning, a community of strivers, and an environment where the values of faith, integrity, and scholarship are central. Today, Brothers, Partners-In-Mission, parents, students, alumni, and friends of the school collaborate so that the word “excellence” lives in countless ways through a broad and rich college preparatory curriculum, an extensive athletic and activities program, and opportunities for UNION 50TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL EDITION
students to serve others, deepen their life with God, and come to a realization of how to use all their gifts and talents. Now is the time, while the school enjoys unprecedented growth and positive regard, to meet the future head on. We are planning from a position of strength and we want the next 50 years to be ones of confidence and boldness as we continue to serve students from varied backgrounds and abilities as is the call of our Lasallian mission. Proud of the care we have given to our people, programs, and property, it is time to continue with new and exciting initiatives. As you examine this special issue of the Union, we hope you catch our excitement as we take on the challenges to strengthen our 4A’s: Academics, Access, Arts, and Athletics. The change we envision over the next few years at De La Salle is nothing less than dramatic. We are blessed to have the support of two visionary supporters as we embrace the new challenges of transforming the lives of wonderful and welldeserving young men. Jean and Kenneth H. Hofmann have enlivened our community with an unprecedented and extraordinarily generous gift of $25,000,000. Why? They believe in our school. They want us to dream and to do so in big ways. We have responded with the “50th Anniversary Campaign for De La Salle.” Led and challenged by the Hofmann family, we have created a plan for growth that includes exciting new and renovated spaces for learning and an expanded endowment fund that provides greater access to our school for students who otherwise would not be able to meet the full cost of tuition. Just as there was no hesitation on the part of Jean and Kenneth Hofmann to invest in our future, our plan reflects that same enthusiasm as we prepare to better serve our students by touching their hearts and developing their minds in new and more effective ways. We call on you today, our great band of supporters, to take your lead from the
Hofmanns and contribute as well to the transformation of our school and its students. Generations of Spartans, current students and those to come over the next 50 years, will benefit greatly from your generous commitment to them. We are deeply grateful that the leadership of Mr. and Mrs. Hofmann has been recognized and supported by the Bishop of Oakland. The Most Reverend Michael C. Barber, S.J. serves with Mr. and. Mrs. Hofmann as Honorary Co-Chairs of our Campaign. The collective energy and commitment of these dear friends of our school gladdens our hearts and energizes us for the road ahead. Will you join us on this journey? We ask you to consider supporting our efforts to prepare young people to take their place in society as innovators, leaders, scholars, good citizens, active members of their faith communities, and men who wish to serve others. We invite you to ponder these questions: • What has De La Salle meant to me and my family?
• What will De La Salle mean to future generations of young men who will benefit from the gift of our Lasallian education?
• How many ways can I measure the impact of a gift to De La Salle that supports and shapes young men of competence, compassion, and character who will lead and serve in our ever-changing world?
We ask you to join us in this bold and critically important endeavor. We are blessed to have you by our side and are deeply grateful for your thoughtful consideration of the needs we outline in the pages that follow.

he 50th Anniversary Campaign for De La Salle High School is a historic effort that will bring together our community in unprecedented ways. De La Salle has demonstrated its success by loving, instructing, and guiding young men in a tradition of excellence. Yet, De La Salle knows that its mission is not to stand still. Together with the school, the entire Spartan community is called to a serious commitment to do more and be more. That is why we have enthusiastically volunteered to help lead the Capital Campaign effort. We believe in De La Salle. We believe in what happens here. Fundraising Goal: $15 million

e La Salle understands that the unlocking of a student’s potential should not be tied to his ability to pay for a high quality education. De La Salle hopes to ensure proportionate accessibility for a diverse student body by growing funds for the Financial Aid Endowment. Its success in raising the size of the endowment substantially heightens De La Salle’s ability to answer the growing need for financial aid from families in the increasingly squeezed middle class as well as low-income families living at poverty level. Annually, over 30% of De La Salle’s student population receives some form of tuition assistance soley based upon need. De La Salle is charged to do more. Recognizing the tremendous potential but modest means of so many of its students, the school believes in these young men and in doing everything possible to provide them the financial support they need. Thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Hofmann and specifically their support for Access, the school is able to increase its endowment by $15 million, and De La Salle expects to more effectively manage financial aid resources in support of students in need. This allocation of new resources will allow the school to: 1) stabilize anticipated tuition increases year-over-year; and
2) re-allocate tuition resources currently dedicated to financial assistance in support of varied operational programs and improvements benefitting all students.
But with this tremendous gift, the need for additional endowment resources will continue to grow. As more students desire a Catholic, Lasallian education, De La Salle’s mission is to continue to assure access to the school's challenging academic program, and co-curricular opportunities for all qualified students, especially low income families and the middle class. So while our initial goal of $15 million has been achieved, Access will

continue to be a fundraising priority, now and into the future. Our young men and their families are grateful for the opportunity they have been given; to be a part of our community, to receive a De La Salle education, and to prepare for the next steps in their lives.

Meg and Tom Maloney have leant their leadership to the 50th Anniversary Capital Campaign through their involvement on the Campaign Cabinet as well as their financial support to the Campaign.
The Maloney family shares with the Union, “We are thrilled to support the 50th Anniversary Campaign, and we feel indebted to De La Salle for the special opportunity it provided our boys. Not only did the school offer a rich, faith-filled academic environment, but it also opened our boys’ eyes to the large and diverse world around them.
The Maloney Family: Mia, Meg, Charlie ’14, Tom, Jackson
It is important for us to support De La Salle’s mission, and particularly continued Access for those young men who couldn’t otherwise afford to attend De La Salle. We believe the school’s mission not only enriches the lives of those who benefit from scholarship funds, but also those young men who are given the privilege to play, study, and experience the De La Salle brotherhood alongside them.” 50TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL EDITION UNION

o longer satisfied with your father’s or mother’s science curriculum, a textbook centered, lecture-driven, occasional lab experiment approach to the evolving life sciences and the new physics, is no longer adequate. Indeed, the revolutions in these disciplines and the new worlds of engineering design, robotics, and environmental sustainability projects calls us to create new kinds of spaces for inquiry-based, projectdriven learning. Technology to support this is not only everywhere; it is also hands-on and mobile, supporting imagination, intuition, multi-modal investigations, and multi-tasking activities. De La Salle students must be prepared for a global job market that will look very different 10, 20, and 30 years from now. They will confront a bewildering array of social and ethical issues in a world where the pace and scope of technological development is unparalleled. Today’s De La Salle students are being asked to become more self-directed learners, be better equipped to capture and analyze data, apply their conclusions to real world situations, increase their understanding of cause and effect, and promote a rich understanding of concepts across disciplines. Thus the demand for a new academic space emerged—the well-established mathematical and scientific formulas and concepts we learned as teenagers will team with an artistic focus that seeks to join journeys with numbers and empirical data to a commitment to beauty, design, problem-solving, and just plain

wonder about the world around us and in us. The STREAM (Science, Technology, Robotics, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) Innovation Center is of a flexible design with learning spaces that call for students and teachers to collaborate with and for each other. The teachers in this new building will be less the “sage on the stage,” and more “the guide on the side.” These teachers will help students embrace their inner scientist, inner explorer, inner artist, and inner creator. And teachers will find each other and collaborate more and more in such a setting. Watch out when the art, science, and math teachers break down the walls that have kept them separate. Design, measure, build, execute, reuse, re-imagine will be some of the key verbs in place in the STREAM Innovation Center. The STREAM Innovation Center will provide an unprecedented resource for these educators to facilitate the development of the young men who are the Spartan students of today and tomorrow. The De La Salle STREAM Innovation Center will... • Foster true-teacher student collaboration. • Build state-of-the-art laboratories. • Improve integration of technology. • Incorporate “green” design and construction. • Create a competitive critical-thinking environment and provide more science electives.

On Sunday, June 1, 2014, the De La Salle High School community gathered to break ground for a major new facility, the STREAM Innovation Center (a center for Science, Technology, Robotics, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics). In attendance were some 400 guests, including City of Concord Mayor Tim Grayson and Vice Mayor Ron Leone. The Diocese of Oakland's Bishop Emeritus John S. Cummins, an affiliated member of the De La Salle Christian Brothers, spoke enthusiastically about Lasallian education and blessed the undertaking. School president Mark DeMarco '78 said, “In 2015, the school will mark its 50th year of service. It’s time to celebrate our successes, and to act boldly to ensure that we can continue to provide exceptional education to students in the future.”

De La Salle is honored to have the Van Wyck family join the efforts of the 50th Anniversary Campaign as early investors.
The Van Wyck family shares with the Union, “Our introduction to Catholic education started when our family first stepped onto the De La Salle campus. Since then, our passion has been sharing with others how important a Catholic, Lasallian education is for young men. Outsiders know how well known De La Salle is for its athletics, but it is truly the academics of the school that help develop these young men into our future leaders. Teaching at De La Salle continues to evolve to be more inclusive of learning styles, and the STREAM Innovation Center with its new way to approach learning of science, technology, robotics, engineering, arts, and mathematics will open doors to new educational opportunities for students.”

e La Salle students are asked to address physical fitness and wellness through its health curriculum, opportunities available through intramural and interscholastic athletic programs, and through interaction with athletic trainers and nutrition guides. Therefore more and more students are participating in athletics or fitness based activities at a time where physical space constraints and desire to participate conflict with study time. The addition of a new Athletic Performance Center, along with a new competition gym, will provide larger, and therefore more safely managed space for weight training and management, and cardio-vascular conditioning, at a time when higher numbers of students are seeking such opportunities related to athletic team work (in and out of season) and/or personal fitness goals.

• Provide additional space for team practices, and curtail the need for early morning practices that begin at 6:00 a.m. and many evening practices that extend until 9:00 p.m., and thus allowing more study time. • Expand the current weight room, whose limited size has become a significant safety issue. More than 700 students use the weight room each year, yet it was originally designed to support just 400 students. • Provide a large flex space: additional space for team practices, non-athletics activities. • Increase indoor practice space. • Assembly and meeting space for 1,200 people. • Provide ample space for basketball, volleyball and wrestling programs.

De La Salle alumnus Steve Abreu ’83 and his wife Kellie have always felt that giving back to his alma mater has been a philanthropic focus. With Steve’s prior involvement with the De La Salle Alumni Association as board president, it was inevitable that he would lend his leadership with his involvement on the Campaign Cabinet as well as his financial support to the 50th Anniversary Capital Campaign.
Steve shares with the Union, “Kellie and I have always felt it is imperative to help pave the way for the young men at De La Salle. We have always felt that giving to De La Salle has been easy for us to do. The school’s leadership and the direction they have set will help develop the boys into outstanding individuals and future leaders. With the addition of the Athletics Performance Center, these facilities will provide the school with much needed new capacity and at the same time ensure that they have some of the best facilities in the Bay Area. My hope is that my fellow Spartan brothers will answer the call for support as they are able for this effort.”

e La Salle’s performing arts programs have been highly regarded for decades serving not only our students, but also serving as a vital resource for nearly 800 Carondelet High School students annually. The program has flourished thanks to an exceptional faculty and engaged alumni population so much that 40 percent of the student body participates in various performing arts programs. Unfortunately, the original theater, built as an auditorium in 1965, needs comprehensive renovations and seismic retrofitting. Once transformed, the new multi-purpose Performing Arts Center will allow for a multitude of uses from classroom and academic purposes, to performances, meetings and liturgical worship. Preliminary plans include a new lobby, a new raised roof, upgrades to lighting, sound and acoustics, increased stage size, fly and wing space, storage areas for costumes and sets, ADA access, fire sprinklers and more. With the realization of a new Performing Arts Center, more students will be drawn to theater and the other arts, thus ampli-

One recent student used his geometry training to create a set design with very specific needs. As new curriculum begins to be developed as a result of the STREAM initiative, more students going forward will be able to apply science, or math, or engineering to the performing arts.
The Performaning Arts Center will... • Broaden the arts curriculum. • Provide an enhanced gathering space. • Address safety concerns. • Draw more students to the arts. • Provide a dedicated set-building space and storage for costumes and sets. • Add dressing rooms, a control booth, a lighting grid and an orchestra pit.

Teri serves on the Board of Trustees and both have chosen to support the 50th Anniversary Capital Campaign specifically for its focus on the Arts. Teri and Steve share with the Union, “We have opted to allocate our contribution to the Arts for a few reasons: The Arts tap and develop students’ creative capacities. They are linked with the other school disciplines and often times are the vehicle that leads students to success in their learning experience. The Arts have no SES (Supplimental Educational Services) boundaries - they are for ALL students... a philosophy that the Christian Brothers promote.”

How you can help
Few Catholic high schools have the ability, courage, tenacity and vision to attempt to raise as much as $50 million in a single campaign, let alone a school that is only 50 years old. De La Salle does! Through three to five year pledges and a variety of recognition opportunities, all members of the De La Salle community will have the opportunity to contribute to the school in a meaningful way. Success will require extraordinary support from the entire De La Salle family, including, alumni parents, current parents, alumni, grandparents, as well as friends, foundations and corporations who believe in young Spartans of today and tomorrow. Please consider making a transformative gift over a three to five year period, structuring your gift in ways most advantageous for your own financial planning. Our advancement staff can work with you or your advisor to identify the gift most appropriate to your philanthropic and financial goals.
Current Gifts You may make a current gift to De La Salle High School and fund it with cash, securities, life insurance policies given outright, real estate, or other assets. Gifts of appreciated securities are often particularly beneficial to the donor from a tax perspective. Pledges You may pledge an amount to the Campaign and arrange to fulfill it in installments over three to five years.
Estate Gifts You may name De La Salle as a beneficiary in your will or trust.

Annual Fund vs. 50th Anniversary Campaign – What is the difference?
While reading this special edition of the Union, you may thinking about how you are currently supporting De La Salle and its various fundraising efforts – most specifically through the De La Salle Annual Fund and wondering, what’s the difference?
The De La Salle Annual Fund is the cornerstone of all fundraising at the school and is the “every year” gift we ask of our entire community. Support of the Annual Fund is essential for funding curricular and co-curricular activities each and every school year. In celebration of our 50th year in existence, the 50th Anniversary Campaign for De La Salle is a special capital project to help the school prepare for the next 50 years. With a focus on Academics, Access, Arts, and Athletics, this campaign will make transformative changes to our campus possible and will enhance financial assistance for families in need. Our hope is that families will continue to participate each year with a gift to the Annual Fund, as well as consider a one-time, stretch gift to the 50th Anniversary Campaign. 50TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL EDITION UNION
