We have been blessed and given so much in our lives...
What an amazing year ahead as we celebrate our 50th Anniversary! We as an entire community have so much to be thankful for in knowing that we are celebrating 50 years on Winton Drive. It is by God’s amazing Grace and the vision of Saint John Baptist de La Salle that we are where we are today as a school. As I write this I guess I am feeling a little old—okay really old; I remember well my freshman year here in 1974. Each of you reading this edition of the Union have your own unique memories and experiences of our school. If you would like to share them with us, please do—we might share some of them in our next Union. As many of you know, the 50th Anniversary Campaign is in full swing. Like in 1965 when we started with a new school building, we continue to enhance the quality of the education offered here with the opening of the STREAM Innovation Center, which opened on August 12th. What an amazing feat to accomplish in just 14 months—on time and on budget. We have been blessed by so many benefactors and donors to our school over the past 50 years; we would not be where we are today without your support. This Campaign is focused on support from everyone—gifts big and small—widespread support from all who believe in the wonder of this school and how it has transformed lives. In our final push on the STREAM Innovation Center, we have $4.5 million to raise, and we hope to have all gifts and pledge commitments received
by December 31 of this year. Your support is critical as the school moves forward with this Capital Campaign effort. Once we have the STREAM Innovation Center completely funded, we will be able focus on the third phase of the Campaign—The Athletic Performance Center. I have always been of the mindset, “No Mission, No Money; No Money, No Mission;” and what a fine balance this is. We have been blessed and given so much in our lives, and I hope that De La Salle High School and the Lasallian Mission have been a major factor in your success. If this has been the case, we would hope that you would help fund the Mission. In this issue you will see the results of another successful year and where our new alumni will be going to school. You will also read about what other graduates have been doing after they graduated and have created ways to work with their families. You will see “innovation” at work in a variety of ways. I hope you enjoy reading the pages of this magazine—we trust that you see how the Mission is alive on Winton Drive because of your continued support. In the spirit of Saint John Baptist de La Salle,

The De La Salle “Union” is a bond of unity for the extended De La Salle family — alumni, parents, alumni parents and the many friends who make up our school’s growing family.
The School Seal
The school seal is an important part of the identity of De La Salle High School. The symbols used to make up the seal have particular meanings that reflect the values and purpose of the school. In the center of the seal is the Chi Rho (Kye Row). This is the Greek abbreviation of the title “Christ.” The first two letters of the word Christos or “Christ” are “Chi” and “Rho,” represented in the Greek alphabet as a capital “X” and “P.” The fleur-de-lis, with “lis” meaning lily in French, reminds us of our French origins with Saint John Baptist de La Salle. The lamp is a symbol of knowledge, reminding us of our primary purpose as a school — education. The section of broken chain represents freedom — freedom from ignorance. The chain surrounding the seal signifies strength and unity. “Les Hommes de Foi” is French for “Men of Faith.”

President’s remarks to Class of 2015
rom past graduation talks I have learned that as graduates you are not really focused on what I will say. So I thought perhaps I should ask a few of you to stand when I call your name to answer a random question – think of this as your final, final exam – first question: What is the first verb in our Mission Statement? Now that I have your attention… After four years here the world is waiting for you – college – graduate school – a job – a family – how will you fare? What type of virtues do you want to be known for – résumé virtues or eulogy virtues? In a recent article in The New York Times, David Brooks wrote about this when he said… “The résumé virtues are the skills you bring to the marketplace. The eulogy virtues are the ones that are talked about at your funeral — whether you were kind, a man of integrity, honest or faithful.” We all know that the eulogy virtues are more important than the résumé ones. But our culture and our country’s educational system spends more time teaching the skills and strategies you need for career success rather than the qualities you need to radiate that sort of inner light. More of us know how to build an external career than how to build inner character. I hope we as a school have done both for you, but with a

heavy emphasis on the latter – on building inner character. It is the eulogy virtues that are most important to us at De La Salle – partnering with your parents in developing your character. We live in the culture of the Big Me. The world is telling you to promote yourself. Social media wants you to broadcast a highlight reel of your life – a selfie. Commencement speakers are always telling young people to follow their passions. Be true to yourself. This is a vision of life that begins with you and ends with you. Don’t fall into that trap. On the road to happiness you are
campus news news campus not going to find your vocation by asking, “What do I want from life?” You are going to find it by asking these questions: “What is life asking of me? How can I match my talents with what the world needs?” I urge you to focus on WE and not ME. And as we focus on WE – I would be remiss in my duties as President not to speak about the new building that is behind me. The STREAM Innovation Center behind me is the result of four years of patience and persistence from concept to completion this summer – the same amount of time our graduates have been here. As we approach our 50th year of educating young men, WE need to ensure that others have the same opportunity to share in this Catholic Lasallian education. It takes a concerted effort by all of us to ensure our ministry continues. One of Jesus’ most famous sermons was the Sermon on the Mount. The adaptation for today is the Sermon on the Amount. What has this school meant to you? What has this school done for your son - your grandson? The 50th Anniversary Capital Campaign goal of $50,000,000 at 50 years old, which our school will be next year, is a testament to how we as a community can ensure the success of the of the school for the next 50 years. have asked how they could help build the future of the school. We are inviting you to invest yourself through the resources God has given you – your energy, your prayers, and your financial support – in this work to which God has called us. And for those of you who are still wondering what the first verb in our Mission Statement is – it is “loved.”

Go forth with a strong sense of self and, I pray, an even stronger sense of we.
My brothers of the Class of 2015: I joined when you arrived as freshmen in 2011 and I returned to De La Salle to serve as principal again after having left here in 1998. What a group you have been with which to resume my life at our school. I have seen you grow. I have seen you change. I have seen you succeed. I have seen you fail. You have had many good, admirable, and maturing moments. You have had moments, not too many I think, where some moved away from what was the right, the difficult, or the brave action to take. In other words—you lived the human condition in all its satisfactions and disappointments. I have witnessed and been part of a process of transformation that no other four-year period of your life will likely ever equal. What a story of transformation it has been. Family and friends, each of these young men has a story. Each story has its distinctiveness. We embrace the person behind each story. We treasure each one. But that’s not all. No, there is another narrative that has been building here on this campus for the past four years. It is a powerful force. It is one built on trust and brotherhood. It is the shared story of the Class of 2015. Like the individual stories of our graduates, it has had its share of ups and downs. And, like those individual stories, it traces an arc that leads to maturity, wisdom, and courage. And it echoes with those foundational themes of our school—faith, integrity, and scholarship. Gentlemen of the Class of 2015, I praise you much this morning. If I criticize, it is just a little. But more than anything else, I think of you as my brothers and brothers to each other. Long after GPAs and term paper deadlines; long after athletic and artistic triumphs and defeats; long after enthusiasms and boredom, there is you—individuals and classmates—now, I hope and pray—brothers for life. Your life in the 21st century marches on. Continue on the many paths offered to you and also those you have created or will, all the while remembering God’s holy presence, having Jesus live in your hearts, trusting in the Lord, and in the power of the brotherhood in which you now have a lifetime membership. Go forth today with the blessings and love of our faculty and staff, the continuing care and affection of your family and friends, and the good news of God’s faithfulness to you. Go forth with a strong sense of self and, I pray, an even stronger sense of we. If you do, you will have a great legacy as the Class of 2015. May God bless each and every one of you today and especially the Class of 2015 who now join the ranks of over 8,000 Spartan alumni. May peace be always with you. Congratulations! We love you all. Our hands once quivered in fear and apprehension, but on this day, we shake hands with the confidence and steady resolve of a De La Salle graduate. With pride for all that we have accomplished alongside one another and all that we will continue to accomplish in the coming years. With gratitude for the blessings the De La Salle community has graciously bestowed on us during our four years at this school - a gift that laid the groundwork for our future, forever indebting us to the people who dedicated their lives to the educating and nurturing of young men like ourselves. We shake hands in solidarity with those whom we have helped over the years in Concord, Salinas, San Diego, San Francisco, Guatemala, and Eritrea. And in silent prayer that God may guide each of us throughout the rest of our lives and that we may use our gifts to better the community that has bonded together to enrich us with an experience unlike any other. As you celebrate today with your friends and family, remember all they have sacrificed for you, and extend your hand thanking them for the years of support they have selflessly provided. Don't leave this world without reaching out and touching those around you.
I thought about all the memories that stuck out to me from my high school experience. Images from the past flashed through my mind. I was a freshman at a rally, crying out, "We are Sparta!" as the famous clip from the movie “300” played on the projector. I was a sophomore at a liturgy, offering my fellow students the sign of peace at the request of Fr. LaSalle. I was a junior in the band, watching the state championship football game, feeling the sadness and frustration that washed over the crowd as the Spartans were defeated for the first time in years. I was a senior, staring at the new STREAM Building, glad to see its progress, but regretting the fact that I would never take a single class in it. I was a freshman, or a sophomore, or a junior, or maybe a senior, laughing madly at the Christmas rally as "The Twelve Days of Christmas" inevitably descended into incoherent screaming. So I challenge you, my fellow graduating seniors, to take what you've learned at this school and carry it with you into the world. Find your place in this modern order. Use your own talents and abilities to contribute to the foundation built up by those who came before us. Remember your commitment to service, your commitment to being a man of faith, integrity, and scholarship, your commitment to building an inclusive community, to the dignity of the poor and vulnerable. No matter what it is that you find yourself doing, do it with the skill and dedication of a master craftsman.

There are 245 students in the graduating class. Of those, 243 (99%) will attend colleges, universities, or two-year colleges. One student will enter the military and one student’s plans are undecided. The 213 students attending four-year colleges (87% of the class) will be in 30 states, Washington DC and British Columbia, Canada. Students applied to an average of 7.4 schools, and had an average acceptance rate of 56%. 29 students (12% of the class) were recruited for athletics at 4-year schools, and at least 67 students (27% of the class) received other types of merit scholarships. Of four-year colleges in California, students are attending 28 schools: 15 public, and 13 private, for a total of 102 students, 42% of the class. Over half of the Fifty: Over half of the states of the Union will be feeling the Spartan spirit in the fall of 2015. Class of 2015 graduates entering four-year colleges will betake themselves to 30 states including California, Washington D.C. and British Columbia, Canada. Eighty seven percent of the class (213 graduates) will be attending four-year institutions: 102 of them are pursuing their studies in California, at 15 public schools and 13 private schools’ and 111 of them will scatter across the country to 30 public and 33 private schools. And with the familiar ring of those two words delivered to your ears with gusto, you already began to feel better. There are men, and there is Superman; there are bowls, and there is the Super Bowl; there are stars, and there are superstars; there are fans, and there are superfans. And then, there was Joe Reynolds, affectionately known the De La Salle Spartan community over as simply: “Hey Babe.” What makes someone a superfan? ascent in the Navy, first being chosen for AOCS (Aviation Officer Candidate School), and later, through the various stages of flight training programs from propeller planes…to jet planes… to catapulting off an aircraft carrier…and more precariously, to landing on one. As Jim neared his completion of flight training school, Joe was diagnosed with inoperable late-stage cancer. Three months later he passed in peace on September 26, 1996, with family at his bedside. At Joe’s Memorial Mass, Former Head Football Coach Bob Ladouceur eulogized him in part:
“First off, Joe was a lover of life, chronically upbeat and hopelessly cheerful. Forever loyal to the students and athletic life at De La Salle. He believed in the attempt and effort of doing good. Joe was unconditionally supportive of the students. The win/loss record or outcomes of games didn’t matter to Joe. Neither did the status or ability of a particular athlete. He loved and accepted all. It was the effort and courage of a young man putting forth his best effort was what Joe admired most. I was amazed at his ability to recall certain games and teams. But what amazed me most was his recollection of individuals. Starters or non-starters, it didn’t matter—he either knew you or wanted to know you. And for what purpose? Because Joe wanted to align himself with a winning program?—I think not. Joe believed in youth, and the power of youth. He understood and felt
the fire that burns in the heart of youth. That heart of passion, hopes, dreams and innocence. He felt that power and did everything he could to nurture, encourage and promote that power. From the snacks he passed out to the kids; to an uplifting pat on the rear; to the personal words of encouragement. Joe was an unwavering optimist. He found the silver lining in every situation. As coaches often do, I used to lament certain situations as he would ask me, “How’s it going babe?” He would listen and then express his disapproval in my pessimism. But Joe believed in me… The bottom line of Joe’s involvement was—he loved our kids. And I loved him for it. His random acts of kindness revealed his heart, and these will never be forgotten— another lesson learned.”

Interestingly, 19 years after Joe’s passing, former De La Salle All-American football scholar-athlete Travis Pfiefer ‘97, who continued his playing career at Stanford University, and who was a co-captain during the 1996 season, Joe’s final one with the DLS Football team, echoed a similar sentiment of belief and kindness as his former coach: “In short, “Hey Babe” was our spirit animal…The special ingredient he had was that he believed in us before he even knew you personally. He was so generous with his time…he was kind to me and he was FALL 2015 UNION

enthusiastic about me, before I was even going to play on the field. I was a nobody and he treated me the same way he treated our captains—and that was big.” The former and late Walnut Creek Mayor and City Councilman, Ron Beagley who also died of cancer less than a year after Joe’s passing, had this reflection:
“For in truth, Joe Reynolds was the same in death as he had been in life—supportive of others, buoyant of his contributions, loving of his son, and his own extended family, and grateful for every kindness showed to him. His faith carried the day for him. Joe was a simple man. He was excited by things a more sophisticated person might view as trivial or mundane. He loved sports and he was a passionate fan for those teams fortunate enough to win his allegiance. The same was true of his friends. My sense is that he really gave to others more than he took. I remember him telling me that he would let someone in the Forty Niners game for free (Joe was a 49ers gateman), but he always told that person that they needed to repay the kind deed to another. Does that sound just a little Christ-like? I think so. How does a Joe Reynolds affect us? Actually, the verve in our life comes from those around us. While we may not realize it at the time, we only grow mentally and spiritually if someone is willing to nurture our minds and spirits. I submit that Joe did that with his fellow human beings perhaps better than most of us.”

present at countless athletic contests across the school year’s three seasons, but in cheering on his fellow classmates, and often, in leading the cheers himself. He recently recalled, “When you invest all that time with the teams, you really feel all of the emotions as they go. It was super cool to see the guys that I had watched from the end zone for the whole season, see them on [television] and see them win state. I couldn’t help but feel proud and that maybe having a good student section helped them out just a little bit.” From a personal perspective, he reflected, “I think being a part of the student section, and leading it, has definitely made me into a more confident person, who’s not afraid to say what I need to say.” For more than a decade, Joe “Hey Babe” Reynolds was also not bashful in presence, cheer and example. His familiar rally call of “Tough defense! Aggressive offense! Keep the fire burning babe!” was heard booming from the sidelines for almost every home and away football game as well as many practices—despite being limited in terms of finances and transportation. However, his tireless service and positive support did not cease with the fall athletic season. During the winter, he transitioned to the baseline at basketball games with his distinctive cadence, cheer, and clap—even more audible in gyms. In the spring, at baseball games, he was along the foul line. But regardless of the season or squad, he handed out Bazooka Bubble Gum, Tootsie Rolls, and Smarties to anyone he met (often saying, “Take three for the Trinity!”) and injected the Spartans with boundless exuberance unlike any other. Joe had a rare gift to lift the spirits of De La Salle students, faculty, and everyone who came in contact with him.

In his memory, not long after his passing, the Department of Athletics launched the Joe Reynolds Fan of The Year Award “to honor his memory to a student that shows extraordinary spirit and support to DLS Athletics.” Last year’s recipient was Donovan Smith ’15, who also served as the head manager of the varsity baseball team. Donovan stood out (literally) by not only being

In the lead-up to a prominent game versus another highly ranked Bay Area opponent during the fall of 1993, the Contra Costa Times published this profile of Joe.
“Reynolds grew up idolizing Notre Dame, so it’s only natural he roots for De La Salle. The Lou Holtz lookalike is an institution at the school. To take him off the sideline on a Friday night would be like removing a goal post. “There are three things I like to see,” he said. “No. 1, I don’t want to see anyone get seriously hurt on either side. No. 2, I want to win. No. 3, if we lose, it’s only by a point.” The 55-year-old is banking on No. 2, although he admits No. 3 is a possibility. “Both teams have excellent offenses, but I feel it will come down to defense,” Reynolds said. “They have a very good defense, but our defense is better.” What’s the only thing that would keep Reynolds from is usual post on the Spartan sideline? “If I wasn’t alive,” he said. Joe may no longer be on the sideline but his flame burns brightly, and his spirit, lives on.
Brian Marchetti, Ed.M., ’91, resides in Atlanta with his wife Melissa. Like many, he and his brother Kevin ’96, have untold fond memories of their uncle, “Hey Babe”. Joe is survived by his son, Jim Reynolds, who after serving 20 years, largely as a U.S. Naval Jet Aviator, retired a Commander, and now serves as Vice-President of Training &

De La Salle Academy completes first year and a summer camp program in 2015! De La Salle Academy began last August
with students coming in from sixteen
different schools. Much of our first year
at the Academy was spent learning
what it means to be a Young Spartan
and how to celebrate Brotherhood!
W
e’re proud of the progress the Young Spartans made in just one year. The young men have grown academically, spiritually and socially. They have a true sense of the Spartan Brotherhood. The first year of the Academy was filled with many success; including twenty-three of the thirty-four students earning Honor Roll for the second semester! We closed our school year in June recognizing select students from each class with an FSC Award: Young Man of Faith, Integrity and Scholarship. Each class voted to honor a student as the “Most Improved Brother.” All in all, the first year at De La Salle Academy was a wonderful time of growth and accomplishment. Typically, most schools have summer break. Rather than having the entire summer away from school, the Young Spartans at De La Salle Academy participated in a mandatory, month-long, summer camp program this past July. Monday through Thursday summer camp mornings were filled with academic classes in Language Arts and Math. Each afternoon, following silent reading, the boys headed down to the Community Youth Center to practice good sportsmanship and brush up on agility skills. Each Friday during summer camp, faculty and students headed off campus for Fun Friday Field Trips. From Diablo Valley Bowl in Concord, to Blackhawk Museum in Danville, to De Marillac Academy in San Francisco to the State Capitol in

Sacramento, the Young Spartans had fun and learned a few things in the process! Each class at De La Salle Academy was elated to experience an Oakland A’s game from a box suite! Grades 5, 6 and 7 all built community, celebrated Brotherhood and enjoyed catered treats together. The games were a memorable experience for the students, as some of the boys had never been to a Major League Baseball game. With our first year as a school completed in June, we anxiously welcomed a new class of Young Spartans to the Academy this summer! In July we welcomed eighteen new young men to De La Salle Academy to begin their journey as Young Spartans. The new students participated in a two-week Readiness Program where they were indoctrinated into the community with older brothers to show them the way. The students are looking forward to a time when the “Big Brothers” will be back and working with them during homework hour at the Academy. Our last day of the summer camp program was spent touring our State Capitol in Sacramento. The boys were in awe of all that happens in our capitol. With a lot of hard work perhaps one of these Young Spartans will be able to serve the community as a State Representative! Zach Moranville ’07 Helps to “Redefine Special”
“
In the summer of 2015 the logo and the signage are everywhere, including on a new U.S. postage stamp. Meet the young art director who has given the Special Olympics its stunning visual presence.
This one was a treat,” says Zach Moranville. “By redefining the word ‘special,’ the true story behind every Special Olympics event lives. Not only did I have the opportunity to meet amazing individuals, I have had the chance to touch the lives of others through creativity and visual communication.” To talk with Zach Moranville is to talk with a man who loves his work. And despite his young age (De La Salle class of 2007, Art Center College of Design in Pasadena class of 2012), Zach has a wealth of professional experience. He lives and works in Los Angeles, and has been an Art Director for four years now at major advertising agencies and public relations firms, first at Davis Elen Advertising, where the Special Olympics 2015 work was done, and currently at Golin. He has had the opportunity to work for huge and well-established clients (Toyota, Nintendo, Nestle, Cisco), and has also created marketing from the ground up for new businesses (such as Reviv3 Procare hair products). His personal website (www.zachmoranville.com) is the place to see some of Zach’s work and to get to know him better. The Special Olympics section of his portfolio is particularly interesting, and the various slides provide a bit of education for the layman into how a design is created, controlled, and applied. Zach can also be seen discussing the Special Olympics project in a video produced by Davis Elen (“The Story Behind the Special Olympics World Games Logo”: it’s viewable on YouTube): “All the cross-sections and the juxtapositions, all the mechanics of the mark in itself,” says Zach, studying the striking logo. “It looks organized, but it also contains chaos, and I think that is what makes it interesting.” When Zach graduated from De La Salle in 2007, he thought he was on a different career path. “I went to Arizona State University, and I was a prelaw major. I thought I saw law school in my future.” But talent, aptitude, and enjoyment soon called him in a different direction—which should probably not have been a surprise to him. You might even say that in the Moranville home there is something

like a gravitational pull toward artistic creativity and visual communication. Zach’s father David is an illustrator, his brother Jacob is a designer, and his sister is also an illustrator. “I left Arizona State after a year and came back home,” says Zach, “and went to Diablo Valley College to do my general requirements, and then went to Pasadena, to the Art Center College of Design, where I specialized in graphic design.” An interesting alumni note: Zach’s father is a graduate of the Art Center College of Design, and his sister is currently a student there. Brother Jacob, for the record, got his professional training at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. With this array of talents and skills, is a Moranville family advertising firm planned for the future? Zach laughs, “No plans for that exist, but we do complement each other well and share the same interests. I think we do help each other to do better work.” And De La Salle High School can take pride in its alumnus’s contribution to conveying to the nation, in striking visual form, the message of the Special Olympics, which is “dedicated to promoting respect, inclusion, and acceptance of people with intellectual disabilities.”

The 2015 Special Olympics World Games are in Los Angeles from July 25 to August 2, with more than 7,000 athletes from 177 countries competing in 25 sports. The first international Special Olympics Games were held in 1968 in Chicago, with 1,000 athletes from the United States and Canada competing in track-and-field and swimming. Today, nearly five million athletes in more than 170 countries take part in Special Olympics. Every year there are more than 81,000 games and competitions, organized with the assistance of more than 1.3 million coaches and volunteer supporters.

On Sunday, August 23, 2015, the De La Salle High School community gathered to dedicate and celebrate its new facility, the STREAM Innovation Center (a center for Science, Technology, Robotics, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics). The Diocese of Oakland’s Bishop Michael C. Barber, S.J., presided over the dedication of the new building.
W
ith the STREAM Innovation Center now complete, this stunning new learning environment will enhance the educational experience for our students now, and position De La Salle for academic excellence well into the future. For the first time in our school’s history, we have the necessary and right kinds of spaces to fully support our current science programs in scope and sequence. Our foundational 9th grade course, Core Principles, now has its own full laboratory space. In fact, every course has a dedicated laboratory. Gone are the days when we had to use a chemistry lab for a physics class!

Meeting Next Generation Science Standards But the STREAM Innovation Center is not just about having a better place for our current programs. A school cannot develop a science program in the 21st century without reference to Next Generation Science Standards. Educators often refer to these as “NextGen.” What is new about these? Students who become competent in these cutting edge standards must be able to demonstrate their understanding of core scientific principles through their abilities to use the practices of science and engineering. This is about “hands-on” applications of science to real world situations. We are no longer satisfied with a student telling us what they know; we now expect students to show us what they can do! This new approach demanded by “NextGen” means that students must develop their investigative skills in the natural world, practice scientific inquiry, and solve meaningful problems. Students will embrace a process that begins with wonder, continues through pondering and hypothetical thinking, and culminates in design and application as responses to the need for innovative solutions to scientific questions that touch the life and physical sciences, as well as those related to engineering.
Providing De La Salle with Growth Opportunity With the rapid changes now at the heart of science and technology, the STREAM Innovation Center now gives our faculty and students room to grow our elective offerings so that our programs embrace and reflect the creative and dynamic nature of science education that will become even more evident in the years to come. This is particularly relevant to expansions in the areas of robotics and engineering that are already changing the way the human community thinks about habitat, work, and sustainability.
Complete But Not Done While construction is complete for the STREAM Innovation Center, we are by all means not “done”. Construction for the STREAM Innovation Center was delivered on time and on budget at $20,500,000. To date, we have raised nearly $16 million of this cost. Our goal is to complete our fundraising efforts by December 31, 2015, so that we may conclude Phase 2 of our 50th Anniversary Capital Campaign and move onto Phase 3, the Athletic Performance Center. But we cannot do this without your help. Necessity has been called the mother of invention. But maybe frustration can be called invention’s father.
n this case the father with the frustration is Gary Bong, a Certified Public Accountant who does the delicate and demanding work of performing financial audits. The clunky and costly software he had to use in his work exasperated him. His sons, Steven Bong (DLS 2005) and Kevin Bong (DLS 2008) thought about how they might help Dad out. One thing led to another, and now the three men have a new product and a new business. The headline for this story might be: Grumpy Dad Sparks Innovation: DLS Alumni Sons Create New Tool for Audits. “Audit” is not a beautiful word, probably, to most of us. When we hear it we may think first of the IRS, and of some unwanted, unwelcome scrutinizing of our tax returns. (The IRS will do about a million audits of taxpayers in 2015.) But most audits are not governmental, and the recipients definitely ask for them. The audits are performed by accounting firms for private clients (large and small, forprofit and non-profit) at the clients’ request, so that these clients can emerge from the process with “audited financial statements” that they can use and publish. The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) says this: “The purpose of an audit is to provide financial statement users with an opinion by the auditor on whether the financial statements are presented fairly, in all material respects, in accordance with an applicable financial reporting framework, which enhances the degree of confidence that intended users can place in the financial statements.”

Gary Bong puts it more crisply: “An audit is a professional certification that your institution’s financial profile is as you claim it to be.” Only highly trained professionals are qualified to do such work. But Gary found that the digital tools available to professionals were not serving him well. “CPAs provide services in basically three areas: bookkeeping, taxes, and audits. There has been great improvement and innovation in the software used for bookkeeping and for tax preparation – but not for audits.” Enter sons Steven and Kevin. As Jason Bramwell told their story recently on Accounting Web: “While home for Thanksgiving in 2011, brothers Kevin and Steven Bong had a little fun at their dad’s expense. As a CPA for the past 35 years, Gary Bong has had plenty of experience performing audits. But according to Kevin Bong, the outdated auditing software his dad was using while working from home often made him very frustrated. “My brother and I were taking a look at his work and poking a little fun at the software. There was a paintbrush button on the tool, like in Windows 95. So we asked him what the paintbrush does, and he said, ‘I don’t know, but don’t touch it! You might break everything!’” When Gary told his sons how much the software cost – a six-figure amount – Kevin and Steven, both computer

Mary Candida Garaventa January 15, 1924 - June 29, 2015
Beloved Mary Candida Garaventa ("Nonni"), 91, passed and is now singing with the angels in God's loving presence. A woman of strong heart and courage, Nonni had an unwavering commitment to her family and her Catholic faith. An Italian mother of five, with 19 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, Nonni was a role model for her family, always putting family first and teaching her children and grandchildren to stand up with courage for their values and for what is right. Nonni was supportive of education at elementary school, high school and college levels - including a strong commitment to helping others and giving back to the community. She supported many charities including creating the Silvio and Mary Garaventa Family Financial Aid Endowment Fund at De La Salle benefiting students who demonstrate a passion for faith, scholarship and integrity through leadership in the classroom, co-curricular activities and their community. It is an enormous privilege, and I am extremely thankful to our wonderful alumni leaders, faculty, administrators and staff members for all of their guidance and support. The 32nd Annual Brother Maris Golf Tournament Is May 9, 2016
The 31st Annual Brother Maris Golf Tournament had over 140 Golfers and raised more than $28,000.00 in monies dedicated for DLS student financial aid. The 32nd annual Brother Maris Golf Tournament, hosted by the De La Salle Alumni Association will take place on Monday, May 9, 2016 at the historic Diablo Country Club. The event honors Brother Maris Spillane, FSC, a teacher and golf coach in De La Salle early years. The proceeds will benefit student financial aid. A shotgun start, fun contests, special hole prizes and hole-in-one prizes, and the high-stakes shootout. The event sells out fast, and registration on-line opens eight weeks prior to the day. The fun includes tee prizes, refreshments, lunch, and end-of-day cocktail reception and dinner with raffles and silent auction. alumni news De La Salle High School Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Is October 25, 2015 De La Salle honors its Distinguished Alumnus of the Year and inducts new members into the Athletic Hall of Fame Charles “Chad” Taylor ’01: Chad’s accomplishments in water polo, swimming, and soccer were extraordinary. He was a two-time All-American in water polo and swimming, a North Coast Section MVP in water polo, and is considered the best water polo goalie in Spartan history. In soccer he was named First Team NCS, and in track and field he qualified for the NCS meet in the pole vault. He was De La Salle’s Athlete of the year in 2001, and went on to a great college career as goalkeeper for Stanford’s water polo team. The Distinguished Alumnus of the Year is Brigadier General Timothy P. McGuire, U. S. Army, a De La Salle graduate of 1983. General McGuire went to West Point from De La Salle and received his commission in 1987. His B.A. is in history, and he has master’s degrees in International Relations and National Security and Strategic Studies. General McGuire’s Army service has been varied, including commands in infantry, armored, and airborne units, and his decorations and awards are numerous. He is Commanding General of the Joint Readiness Training Center and Fort Polk in Louisiana. Tom Dixon ’94: Tom was a starter on the varsity volleyball team for four years and a member of two leaguechampion teams. He was twice a member of the USA youth national team, had a record-setting college career at Loyola Marymount University, and played professionally in Denmark and Spain. As an assistant coach at De La Salle in 2000 to 2002, he helped lead the Spartans to three NCS volleyball titles. Rashad Floyd ’96: Rashad was a standout athlete, playing football and basketball and running track at De La Salle, all with great success. He graduated from Portland State University, where he was a starting point guard in basketball and an AllAmerican defensive back in football, and went on to play nine years of professional football, winning an Arena Bowl Championship. Tom Prindiville ’97: Tom was a premier track and cross country runner all four years of high school, and was named De La Salle’s Athlete of the Year in 1997. He was an All-State performer as a sophomore, junior, and senior, and an All-American cross country runner in 1995. He still owns the school record in the 800meter run. Tom went on to a stellar running career at the University of Arizona.
Maurice Jones-Drew ’03: Maurice, who recently retired from the National Football League after a stellar career, was one of the country’s best running backs at De La Salle and then at UCLA before signing in 2006 with the Jacksonville Jaguars of the NFL. He led the NFL in rushing yards in 2011, and he was named to the Pro-Bowl three times. But he was a national figure as early as 2001, for his breakout performance in De La Salle’s 29-15 victory over Long Beach Poly. As a Spartan, he was rated the number-one all-purpose high school running back in the nation. Tea Hieta: Coach Tea Hieta is the first woman named to the Athletic Hall of Fame at this all-boys school. Hieta coached volleyball at De La Salle from 1997 to 2001 and guided the Spartans to their first and second North Coast Section volleyball titles. A four-time AllAmerican player for Brigham Young University and a Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 1990, she is a native of Finland and was a member of that country’s World Champion team.
The 1992 Football Team: The core of this team was a group of student-athletes who were stunned by their loss in the North Coast Section title game in 1991 and who were determined to work together as a team to achieve their utmost. Their dedication and FALL 2015 UNION

alumni news commitment to one another were second to none, and they made the 1992 season a perfect one, including winning the NCS title, State Championship. The 1992 varsity was ranked third in the nation, and is the team that started “The Streak,” an unmatched achievement in football history. The 1997 Baseball Team: Winners of both the league title and the North Coast Section title, the 1997 varsity baseball team posted a 25-3 record, dominating opponents in every category of play. All nine of the starting players went on to play college baseball, as did the team’s top three pitchers.
