We have been blessed and given so much in our lives...
UNION FALL 2016
As we close out our 50th Anniversary of Catholic, Lasallian education in Concord, I thought it would be interesting to show the evolution of the Union cover over the years. Volume 1, Number 1 made its debut in October of 1981. Its coat of arms, “In Union they Remain,” heralded at the top of the publication its mission to bond the De La Salle family at large–alumni, parents, alumni parents and friends together and to share the mission of the school. As we begin our next 50 years, we as a school continue to adapt and change to the world around us and at the same time we remain laser focused on the Mission to provide a Catholic, Lasallian education to young men with varied academic needs, and diverse social, cultural, and economic backgrounds. In August of 2015, Brother Robert informed me that he would be returning home to New York to work with his District of Eastern North America. As he and I discussed, the time has come to rethink the school’s administrative model. It was time to think “outside the box” in terms of running a busy high school. Eight months of conversations and planning provided a wonderful opportunity for a new leadership model to better serve our school. In 1992, De La Salle High School changed its administrative model. After 23 years using the traditional Principal arrangement, the school adopted the President/Principal model of administration. This change was a response to the growing complexity experienced in leading Catholic, Lasallian high schools. Especially in the past 10 years, both chief administrative positions have seen an increase in the scope and complexity of responsibilities. The President spends more time on board, financial, legal, and strategic matters. There has been a growth in the work of the school’s advancement office and the scope of those activities has also captured more of the President’s time. The Principal’s position, too, has become more complex, with much more time demanded for addressing non-academic, President Mark DeMarco (continued on page 2)

The De La Salle “Union” is a bond of unity for the extended De La Salle family — alumni, parents, alumni parents and the many friends who make up our school’s growing family.
The School Seal
The school seal is an important part of the identity of De La Salle High School. The symbols used to make up the seal have particular meanings that reflect the values and purpose of the school. In the center of the seal is the Chi Rho (Kye Row). This is the Greek abbreviation of the title “Christ.” The first two letters of the word Christos or “Christ” are “Chi” and “Rho,” represented in the Greek alphabet as a capital “X” and “P.” The fleur-de-lis, with “lis” meaning lily in French, reminds us of our French origins with Saint John Baptist de La Salle. The lamp is a symbol of knowledge, reminding us of our primary purpose as a school — education. The section of broken chain represents freedom — freedom from ignorance. The chain surrounding the seal signifies strength and unity. “Les Hommes de Foi” is French for “Men of Faith.”

About the cover: Do you remember those 3D posters from the 1990’s? Called an autostereogram, they were a single-image stereogram (SIS), designed to create the visual illusion of a three-dimensional (3D) scene from a two-dimensional image. Well you won’t get a headache looking at our attempt, at a picture within a picture featuring covers of the Union magazine over the years. FALL 2016 UNION

operational matters. And 23 years later, it is time to once again rethink how we do things as a school. What has been designed is a structure that provides for the integrity of the President’s overall leadership role, with a plan for more delegation of duties to division leaders. The role of Principal will be eliminated and one of these division leader positions will center on leadership in academic matters. This division leader will not have the other duties of a non-academic nature that have taken up more and more of the Principal’s time. Other division leaders will have a wide variety of largely nonacademic duties distributed among them. These division leaders will be in a direct reporting relationship to the President, an arrangement that is often found in independent schools and the collegiate world. The President will have a few other supervisory level leaders whose responsibilities are such that it is appropriate for them to be in a direct reporting relationship to him. The change in model will provide administrators with new opportunities for sustainable service. For more information on this structure see page 3. And while we have a wonderful opportunity for growth, we will miss Brother Robert. He was been instrumental in the history of our school. He is a true Brother in every sense of the word and the vocation to which he was called. It has been my privilege to work with him these past five years and he has never let me down. Our administrative styles complemented each other well. He has always been extremely professional, hard-working and a team player. He has a brilliant mind and always brought creative new ideas to the team and is one of the most well read people I have ever known. He has not only been a fantastic colleague, he has also been a true friend. Brother Robert is known for shaking hands with our young men and they know it. He loved meeting people and could be found at many school events. Often we would joke about how the weekend was and the response would be–what weekend–I do know the long hours of administration can take a toll on someone especially after doing it for forty years. body with a problem and was great fun in meetings with his witty humor. While his decision to move back home is a good decision for him it is a loss to our school community but we were lucky to have the opportunity to work with him. Brother Robert, we wish you the very best in the future. I know that whatever the future holds, you will excel and continue to be successful. We will miss you but this isn’t goodbye as we know you will keep in touch and we will see you sooner rather than later. The Next 50 Years, De La Salle’s New Administrative Model
he time has come to rethink the school’s leadership model. It is appropriate to move beyond a dualadministrator model to a clear and single point of leadership accountability and authority. To that end, what has been designed is a structure that provides for the integrity of the President’s overall leadership role with a plan for more delegation of duties to division leaders. The role of Principal has been eliminated and one of these division leader positions will center on leadership in academic matters. This division leader will not have the other duties of a non-academic nature that have taken up more and more of the Principal’s time. Other division leaders will have a wide variety of largely non-academic duties distributed among them. These division leaders will be in a direct reporting relationship to the President, an arrangement that is often found in independent schools and the collegiate world. The President will have a few other supervisory level leaders whose responsibilities are such that it is appropriate for them to be in a direct reporting relationship to him. The change in model will provide faculty and administrators with new opportunities for sustainable service. The details of the organizational structure that were put in place on July 1, 2016 follow. De La Salle High School will be served by a President/CEO. The President will work in collaboration with and provide direction for Vice Presidents as division leaders and others in designated positions. The President offers a school-wide vision and an enabling structure to accomplish its mission. The President reports to and is the sole employee of the school’s Board of Trustees. Most importantly, the President, as authorized by the Board of Trustees, will own accountability and authority for all matters associated with the success of De La Salle, its faculty, staff, and students. In turn, those within the President’s reporting channels will be delegated appropriate authority within their areas of responsibility. The Vice Presidents and Senior Staff for Office of the President constitute the President’s Cabinet. The Cabinet is the President’s primary consultative body. As such it has a significant, if not final, role in the President’s decision-making process. The President convenes the Vice Presidents, the Senior Staff for Office of the President, and any additional direct reports, as well as others of his choosing, at regular intervals as a Leadership Council for the purposes of exchange of information, coordination of efforts, and discussion of mission effectiveness and specific planning initiatives.
What follows is a brief description of the roles of the division leaders who will serve in the new model of administration:
Dr. Heather Alumbaugh, Ph.D.
Vice President for Academic Life Dr. Alumbaugh is responsible for curriculum, instruction, faculty development and evaluation, and the formulation and execution of academic policies, procedures, and services. The Vice President for Academic Life is the senior De La Salle High School administrator to serve as the core liaison with Carondelet High School. Most crucially, she is accountable to attract and retain the most capable and appropriate faculty and academic support staff, and to ensure the highest quality classroom and learning experience to De La Salle students.
Mark Chiarucci
Vice President for Advancement Mark oversees the development of support for the school and its mission in the areas of fundraising for operational and capital needs. Additionally, this office will handle all alumni relations, and communications.

he beginning of a new academic year brings with it a number of changes to the administration at De La Salle, highlighted by the appointment of Dr. Heather Alumbaugh as the Vice President of Academic Life. In addition, with the retirement of Brother Robert Wickman as Principal, a new organization model will be put in place for the school. Dr. Alumbaugh joins De La Salle from the College of Mount Saint Vincent, where she was the Director of the Honors Program and the Co-Director of the Women’s Studies Program. She received her M.A. and Ph.D. with distinction in English and American Literature from NYU and a B.A. in English with a concentration in Spanish Literature cum laude from UCLA. Dr. Alumbaugh is also a graduate of Carondelet High School. As the Vice President for Academic Life, Dr. Alumbaugh will provide strategic and operational leadership, vision, and direction for the design and implementation of the school’s academic programs. She will serve as the school’s chief academic officer and instructional leader and will collaborate at the administrative level with the newly formed President’s Cabinet. Joining Dr. Alumbaugh is new Vice President for Advancement, Mark Chiarucci. Mark comes to De La Salle from fellow Lasallian school, Saint Mary’s College. De La Salle’s President Mark DeMarco said Chiarucci has the incredible ability to reach out and connect with everyone he meets. This is what De La Salle needs to further its advancement goals. “Mark Chiarucci understands philanthropy and
the complexities involved in advancing a school’s mission. This is exactly what he did at Saint Mary’s College. I have no question in his abilities to foster new opportunities for De La Salle High School; he will take the school to another level of support for the educational mission. He is a great fit with our school as a man of integrity.” said DeMarco. Chiarucci worked for 10 years in athletic administration in both professional and collegiate sports as Assistant General Manager for Wichita Baseball Inc. (Double AA, Kansas City Royals Organization) and as Director of National Corporate Sales & Regional Director for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). He started at SMC in 2004 as Director of Athletic Development and oversaw all external revenue for the Department of Athletics, Fundraising, and Sponsorships; from 2007 - 2013 he was a Major Gift Officer. Beginning in 2014, he served as the Director of Major Gifts and led all major gift activity for the college. A dedicated Lasallian, Chiarucci earned his undergraduate degree from Saint Mary’s College of California in 1991. He also holds a master’s degree in Sports Administration from Wichita State. He graduated from Sacred Heart Cathedral High School in San Francisco in 1987.

During the course of our gathering this morning, I think it is fair to say that you, the Class of 2016, live in two worlds. This is one of those times in your lives when the curtain is coming down and going up at the same time. You will likely not all experience this special time in the same way. Some may focus more on what is ending and see the curtain coming down. Others will see the curtain rising and think more about what is ahead. Whatever it may be for you as an individual graduate, let it be and learn from it. When I think of you, of what has been, I think of these words: faith, integrity, and scholarship. Now, don't get big heads. I am not necessarily referring to you being perfect models of these virtues which have been key descriptors of what we think De La Salle students should become, that is, men of faith, integrity, and scholarship. For sure, we have seen substantial commitment to what these words represent. We have also seen some missteps along the way. And if you think I say that with a tone of criticism, you are wrong. I say it because there is a powerful insight to think about this morning. That insight is simply this: God is not done with you yet. There’s a reason in many of the great religious traditions, we hear these expressions: someone is a “practicing Catholic, a practicing Lutheran, a practicing Jew, a practicing Buddhist or Muslim or Hindu.” We stay faithful to our traditions by working to get better at them. We keep practicing. We are called to keep at it. And I have seen commitment and practice among you, the members of the Class of 2016. I have seen, more than once, students try to take a poorly chosen shortcut toward academic achievement, and then move to a higher level of hard work and honesty; I have seen students focus on themselves and, after the 10th grade Sophomore Immersion day, or days in Salinas or San Diego on Ven A Ver, or volunteering with our Academy middle-schoolers, come to know and understand that it is only when one gives oneself away in service does genuine happiness come. I have seen students move out of their circle of friends, nothing wrong, by the way, with a circle of friends, and reach out to someone who was not part of their club, their group, their boys. I have seen students hesitate, then push themselves and take risks in sports, through retreats, on the stage, in musical groups, and in dozens of other ways. I have seen many acts of kindness on this campus and I have also seen steps taken backwards. Sounds a lot like the human condition, right? The good news, the most welcome of news, is that we cherish the fact that the steps backwards are few compared to the tremendous growth seen over these high school years among you. Today, likely for the last time as a full class, you are on the holy ground of this campus. You sit, quite appropriately in the middle of our world here—the quad. It is here everyday

that over 1,000 De La Salle boys walk to and fro, with story after story after story. The faculty and staff of our school have been privileged to walk with you. We are honored that your parents entrusted you to our care for these high school years. We have taught you the best way we can—by example, even with our faults showing. We have asked you to do the same.
Remarks of Brother We have Robert J. Wickman invited you to F.S.C., Principal put on the person of Christ. This is a great challenge at a time when you are still considering who you are. But Christ has been with you, and He continues to walk with you as this class takes its leave from here today. And Christ will be faithful to you until your last breath is taken on this earth. My brothers of the Class of 2016, De La Salle has asked much of you and now we say you are ready to paint a new picture on a bigger canvas. Your mentors here, the De La Salle Christian Brothers, other religious, and the lay men and women of the faculty and staff who have served, supported, and pushed you say something together today. We say that this is the time to move, to seek new avenues for the many gifts and talents you possess. We also say it is time to look back and wonder how you all came to this moment today. And finally, I pray that our loving God embrace each and every member of the Class of 2016 now and in the years to come as we, all our faculty and staff with your families and friends, embrace you today and launch you into a hope-filled future. De La Salle will always be your home.
God bless you all.

Jack Smith, salutatorian — Speech Excerpt
Nine months ago I went on Kairos, which means "God's Time." Apparently God was really looking forward to this graduation because, during the week, I heard tons of sound bytes about ''Nine months from now..." this and "The real world..." that. And I thought
Alex Raines, valedictorian — Speech Excerpt
about this nine-month development process that would inevitably inject us into the so-called "Real World," and something rather universal came to mind: childbirth. At this school, we call ourselves brothers, and to be a brother, you must share a mother, right? And though my last name is Smith, and yours might be Valentine or Wong or Lopez, we are brothers. Everything we're made up from originally came from our mothers' bodies. Thanks to our umbilical cords, our mothers' oxygen and nutrients were carried to our fetal selves. But when we were born, goodbye! No more umbilical cord. Through our metaphorical umbilical cords, which may have been in the form of favorite classes, liturgies, or long athletic seasons, De La Salle has—shared with us not oxygen and nutrients, but lessons on how to respect all people and care for those less privileged than ourselves, and that a quality education means absorbing information wherever there is an opportunity. This morning, when they hand you the Promised Diploma, they're actually just cutting your umbilical cord. De La Salle is saying, "Son, your nine months are up and it's time to grow and learn somewhere else. Now, please shake my hand." And we, once again, will survive. My own mom, the one whose womb I used to call home, could never teach me how to do my chemistry homework. And even though it took me until I was ten years old to tie my shoes and ride a bike, my mom and dad had their priorities straight: they did teach me to love my siblings. Today, with only seven years of experience in bicycle-riding but seventeen years of loving my siblings, I am confident that they were right all along. And all graduates here today can thank our Common Mother, De La Salle High School, for raising us to love our brothers here on campus.
Maya Angelou said "Be present in all things, and thankful for all things." Be present! As the world continues to advance technologically, it will become increasingly difficult for the class of 2016 to remain present - to be aware of our surroundings, to communicate face-toface, and to enjoy each other's company. We'll be drawn to social media, drawn to our computers, drawn to our iPhones, cameras, and iPads. And while all this new technology will make it easier to stay in touch after today, it's important to remember to live in the moment. Ralph Waldo Emerson said that "to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived, this is to have succeeded." Find your passion; delve deeply into an issue to make this world a better place; make a difference in the lives of family members and friends. Go out into the world with confidence, and find a way to leave your mark on it. So... to the class of 2016, get out and do something you genuinely enjoy. Be present in the world—laugh with your friends, pursue your goals, and touch those in need. Be thankful for God's love and for the love and preparation that those present here today have provided you. And in return, I ask you to extend that same love to your friends and family today and going forward. FALL 2016 UNION

Concord: De La Salle gridiron specialists tackle 'Cinderella' By Jennifer Shaw, Correspondent,
East Bay Times, Published on 4/12/16 Reprinted with permission.
CONCORD -- Towering head and shoulders above the rest, De La Salle varsity defensive tackle Boss Tagaloa adroitly balances a dainty serving tray, before he and defensive end Damon Wiley heed the call to "shimmy" and then launch into choreographed high kicks. The high school seniors are two of the four, good-sport recruits from the school's football team who have cameo roles in the upcoming Company production of "Cinderella." When head football coach Justin Alumbaugh approached his players with the request last fall, Tagaloa initially thought it was a joke. "I've never done anything like this in my life," he says. "It's just stepping out of our comfort zone." Early rehearsals revealed that the requisite light-on-yourfeet, fancy footwork connection—whether on the field or on stage -- was not so far-fetched.
10
UNION FALL 2016
"There's a lot of correlation. "It's footwork and fine motor, and that's something we enforce everyday," says Alumbaugh, a former De La Salle tight end, linebacker—and part of the private school's storied 12-season, 151-game winning streak—with fond memories of his high school era ballroom dance lessons. "In both, it's about having control of your body and getting where you want to be as quickly and efficiently as possible," he adds. Wiley came to the stage with a love of music and dance - and a faint memory of playing the role of a tree in a class play. "I was one of those who was really pumped up about it," he says. "It was tough in the beginning, but I picked it up pretty easily after a couple of practices."
He quickly gleaned the similarity between football and theater. "You have to be on point with your moves," he says. "It takes a lot of calf strength." Show director Meredith Barnidge, who is in her first year as theater arts director for Carondelet and De La Salle, had no qualms about approaching Alumbaugh with her idea for featuring football players in the cast, given her penchant for playing Fantasy Football with students, and having grown up immersed in both the arts and athletics. The die-hard fan of the Cardinals, heralding from her St. Louis hometown, was motivated by a desire to meld the two arenas in order for students to have a wider, non-dual breadth of experiences. "I love football ... I speak football," she says of her ease of offering stage direction to the players with their shared sense of the essential teamwork, and a language they could easily grasp. Barnidge also recruited one of her former students at Contra Costa Christian High School to choreograph. Saint Mary's College sophomore McKenna Williams, pursuing dual degrees in kinesiology and dance, was up to the task, teaching the football players their partner routines. "I'd call (a move) a grapevine and they'd call it a karaoke.
campus news
"They recognized the move because they'd already done it on the football field," Williams says. "They're capable of doing these huge lifts," she adds, noting their upper body strength. Such bold moves are juxtaposed with their adherence to the finer points of the choreography, be it on stage in "Cinderella" or facing down an opposing team. "You have to make split decisions at all times," Barnidge explains. "In both, there are specific positions that you either have to hold or adjust based on the actions or reactions of the other actors or players on the stage or on the field. I would argue that it can be as subtle as shifting weight from one foot to the other." Meanwhile, Tagaloa and Wiley also recognize a similar holding of high standards and a common pursuit of excellence between their athleticism and now the arts—always raising the bar. "I saw how serious (the actors) were, how passionate they are. I like that kind of vibe," Tagaloa says. "It reminds me of football, except no (hard, physical) contact." Barnidge shares a moment when Williams had praised the performers following a particular scene, calling it "perfect."

"Tagaloa's reply was 'you can't say that; if it's perfect then I have nothing left to improve." She recalls a time when Boss opted to stay after his own rehearsal was finished, and when she inquired as to why he remained in the audience, he simply said: "I've never even
seen a play, and now I'm in one." And while he and Wiley may one day reminisce about their football team's win-loss record, "30 years from now, they'll (also) be talking about dancing in a musical," Alumbaugh says.

s De La Salle welcomed the class of 2020 to campus this fall, they, as well as the rest of the students, were greeted by the newly renovated “300” wing on campus. The remodeled facility will house the Visual Arts Department, among others, and now completes the final phase of the architectural plans for the STREAM Innovation project (Science, Technology, Robotics, Engineering, ARTS and Mathematics). The ambitious 50th Anniversary Campaign for De La Salle aimed to address the four pillars integral to our mission: Academics, Access, Arts, and Athletics and completing this facility helps in accomplishing one of those goals. A breezeway has been opened up on the east side of the building on both the first and second floors, and connects the courtyard with the STREAM Center. The building received major upgrades throughout its core, as only the original footprint remains the same, including a new roof and flooring, windows and walls. Also incorporated is an all new HVAC, electrical, plumbing and cabling. Finally, the new Media Laboratory will be equipped with 25 brand new Macintosh computers.

STREAM
O
Innovation Center:
n June 1, 2016, the STREAM Innovation Center completed its first full school year of use. We asked faculty to reflect on their new classrooms, equipment, and now the overall facility has helped them in facilitating learning for our students. Here is what they shared with us.
“Thank you for the opportunity to be able to teach in the STREAM Center. This is a beautiful building that has benefited the students this year. The math rooms are large and I’m able to group my students in alternative ways in comparison to the previous years. My current seating arrangement allows students to be in groups of three or four which allow the students to work collaboratively. This has helped the students in that they can explain challenging concepts to their peers. The floor to ceiling whiteboards are an asset as I can have most of my class up at the board working on questions and I can quickly visually see who has done a question correct or incorrect. My Honors Geometry class was able to put up many proofs on the board as a result of having these boards. The views of the football and baseball fields have been a source of entertainment for the students and me - we all get distracted by the view!” – Melissa Marnell, Mathematics
“The STREAM Center has had an immediate impact on my teaching. Obviously, the space is far superior to my old classroom. It is larger and has a much better layout. It also has a fully functional prep room that makes labs easier to prepare and perform with students. Student hands on experimentation has increased and I have been able to try new experiments in both Honors Chemistry and AP Chemistry. I have also been able to decrease the group size on several labs in chemistry to make sure kids are getting a better hands on experience. Our regular chem-

istry class has benefited the most because we have been able to have the students work in groups of two during lab experiments. I feel the students responded well to the new space. Group work was much more productive because the students could actually meet with their groups and not be bothered by other others because they had the space to work by themselves. I am looking forward to next year. It took us a long time to get settled and organized in this awesome new space. Now that we are here and organized, I think next year will be even better.” – Spencer Shively, Science Department Chair
“I teach robotics and the tables in the STREAM Innovation Center are twice as large as those in the old lab. Our side counters hold a secure charging station for the 100+ batteries we need to charge overnight, every night. I have enough convenient and secure storage for the robotics equipment. Formerly we had shelves in a back room. The aforementioned back room was also the power tool workshop and storage area for the Robotics Club. It was definitely too small and too crowded, and out of sight from the classroom. Our new lab has a large cage for the power tools to be stored and operated safely. The walls around the room are populated with numerous electrical outlets, turning every counter into a potential workbench. We have support racks around the ceiling which can support 500 pounds. There is an abundance of storage in the cage for tools and more in the classroom.” – David Fryman, Robotics and Chemistry Not only did the faculty give the STREAM Innovation Center rave reviews in its first year, but our students also had wonderful things to say about the facility. “The STREAM Center has positively impacted my learning. It has made it easier to learn with all of the new technology that it
First Year Retrospective introduced. I like how everything is brand new which helps me learn.” “The STREAM Center impacted my learning in a positive way because I no longer have to move to a different classroom to perform labs. The classroom is very modern because we can watch Biology videos without the glare of the sun using electronic shades operated outside the classroom.” “Having the STREAM Center has made my learning much better. I feel happy when I enter the building because of all of the light and big space. Overall, the STREAM Center was worth the investment and it is a beauty on our campus.”
Spartonics Success
With the help of the new space in the STREAM Innovation Center, the Spartonics Robotics Club recently made it to the semi-finals of the FIRST Robotics regional competition held at UC Davis. Our Spartonics came in third place in the competition and almost qualified for the upcoming World Championships in St. Louis. This has been their best showing in several years, and with a combination of dedicated students, plus the extra space afforded them in the new building, will hopefully set the stage for even bigger and better things down the road!
Finished But Not “DONE”
While the STREAM Innovation Center is fully operational, we still need to raise approximately $3.4 million of the total $20.5 million construction cost. Additionally, we are extremely fortunate for the $4.5 million pledge from the Wayne and Gladys Valley Foundation specifically designated for our STREAM Center. However, this pledge will expire on September 1, 2017 if we cannot demonstrate broad and significant support from the De La Salle community. In other words, if the school is unable to close the $3.4 million STREAM Center funding gap, the Wayne and Gladys Valley Foundation’s pledge is off the table and the funding gap will grow to $7.9 million. Construction on the next phase of our project – a new Athletic Performance Center – will commence once the STREAM Center is fully funded.
Our campaign is truly at an important
crossroads, and we need your support.
We have achieved so much thus far, but there is still much work to be done!
This campaign stresses participation from the entire De La Salle community. We recognize that each family has been blessed financially in different ways, and even the most modest gifts will help our school reach its full potential. The time to act is now. Please contact Mark Chiarucci at chiaruccim@dlshs.org or (925) 2888106 to learn more about naming opportunities or to make a pledge, or return the enclosed envelope with your gift. Join De La Salle and the entire community in support of this historic undertaking.

Thank you all for this opportunity and I look forward to seeing you on campus soon.
AL
I am excited to begin another two year stretch of intensive De La Salle activities. As a board member for the past two years I have seen how a small team of dedicated and passionate alumni can really make an impact on how we as alumnus revere our alma mater. In our efforts to contact all of you we have been able to increase the physical and emotional presence of alumni on campus. The students at De La Salle are fortunate; all of them. This school offers a unique experience for a kid of any background and with any skill sets to grow as a young man in his own way. We walk in as inquisitive and often unsure young people, and we walk out better at what we care about and with a much stronger sense of who we are. My goal for the next two years is to talk with all of you and gain a better understanding of how you would like to see the school grow, of how you can get involved with other alumni, as well as how you would personally like to help the current and future students of De La Salle. I invite all alumni and De La Salle family to call me at any time. I would especially like to speak with any of our alumni from the 1970’s and 1980’s who are interested in hearing more about the Alumni Board or the school in general. After graduating from De La Salle I went to the University of Denver to study Real Estate Finance. Commercial Real Estate and Development are my professional strengths as a 36 year old father. Chasing my two year old daughter is definitely my other strength in life and so far I have been able to catch her every time. I have held roles in Real Estate Development, Commercial Asset Management, and Commercial Lending. In 2009 I travelled to New Orleans to study for my Masters in Business Administration at Tulane University. I am actively involved in both the University of Denver and Tulane Alumni groups here in the Bay Area.
The De La Salle Alumni Association serves the entire De La Salle family by deepening alumni engagement in the life of the school. Our gratitude goes to these Alumni who serve the school as members of the DLSAA Board of Directors. They are committed to our Catholic, Lasallian tradition and to ensuring the school’s enduring ability to carry out its educational mission.

Patrick Ball ’90: In May of 2016, Patrick joined MemSQL as Vice President of Worldwide Sales, after four years at Cloudera. MemSQL delivers the fastest database platform for real-time analytics. Global enterprises, including the Fortune 1000, use MemSQL to meet growing consumer demand for instant services and personalized digital experiences. As part of this exciting role, Patrick is responsible for growing revenue, scaling the team, and driving sales culture.
Johnathan Bellusa ’93: John is married and has a beautiful family, wife Kassie, and 2 children, Juliana and Vincent. John began in the mortgage Industry in 2003 while working as a police officer in the City of Oakland. He enjoys being in the business of helping people, because of the tremendous support Sierra Pacific Mortgage provides. In 2005 and 2006, he served on the Board of Directors for the California Association of Mortgage Brokers. In addition, John hosted a home loan/real estate radio show "The Bottom Line with Jonathan Bellusa" on CBS's 106.9 FreeFM. He is currently on the Board of Directors for De La Salle High School Alumni Association in Concord, CA. A proud member of the Colombo Club in Oakland, CA. and the San Francisco Italian Athletic Club in San Francisco, CA, John retired from Law Enforcement in 2015 and is working full time for Sierra Pacific.
John Hayek ’94: John started the 2016-2017 school year with a new position - Principal at Ivy and Oasis High Schools. Hayek is not new to the Fallbrook area. As a matter of fact, he has lived in Fallbrook for 13 years, and worked 12 of those years as an employee of the Fallbrook Unified High School District. “For eight years I was an English teacher at Fallbrook High, was athletic director for two years, and assistant principal for 4.5 years,” said Hayek. “Alternative education is something I’ve always been interested in, and when the job came open it was great timing.” This will be Hayek’s first principal position, but he feels that this is an ideal transition after being an assistant principal at a comprehensive high school. Nick Mattos ’00 & Gina Finnegan: Little did he know that saying ‘yes’ to an invitation to the DLS/CHS Grand Reunion would lead to saying 'I do' to the love of his life. In fact he almost didn’t go, until his mom persuaded him to make the trip up from Los Angeles. Nick enjoyed seeing the football team play on Friday night, but Saturday night was something special. The evening began pretty ordinarily with some appetizers and drinks in the DLS courtyard, but then he saw Gina’s smile, and knew he had to say hello. They reminisced about shared classes and 90’s music over dinner, and by the end of the festivities, didn’t want it to end. Thankfully she invited him to an after party at her friend's house, and they’ve been going strong ever since. After a few months of long distance dating Nick returned to the Bay Area to start a new job at St. Mary’s College. This summer, while on a trip through Yosemite, Nick asked Gina to join him on a lifetime of adventures, and she enthusiastically said ‘yes’. They’re planning their wedding for June 2017, and thanking their lucky stars that they attended the reunion. Collin Lafayette ’10: As a freshman at the University of Oregon, Collin Lafayette lost interest in his stated major, business, fairly quickly. Instead, he found himself regularly helping out his roommate with his Product Design Program homework. Lafayette taught his roommate about line weight—for example, how a thicker line could distinguish a border—and how subtle use of shading can offer 2D drawings depth and realistic detail. “I was always interested in design, and my parents were saying ‘You should be an artist!’ I was like, ‘I don’t want to be an artist. I want to try to make some money,’ ” Lafayette says, whose passion for design eventually got the better of him. “I feel like I developed a creative eye for aesthetics at a young age, and [the] Product Design [Program] gave me the opportunity to pursue this skill.” Lafayette, along with his project partners, designed an electric golf-cart sized vehicle called the URRU. This design was ultimately submitted to the international Michelin competition, where it placed as a finalist. Lafayette and his group were one of two winning teams from the United States. The competition included more than 900 entries from university design students, freelance designers, professional design studios, and automotive companies from around the world. Lafayette graduated in June 2015 with a degree in material and product studies. He eventually landed a gig as an industrial design intern at Arcimoto and was hired full time the summer after he graduated. He went on to play for five more seasons with the Broncos before being signed by the Bears in 2013 where he played for two more years.
The 1998 Football Team: The National Championship 1998 Football Team beat top ranked Bakersfield and then topped Southern California power house Mater Dei, in one of the biggest high school games in California history. Their dedication and commitment to one another were second to none, and they made the 1998 season a perfect undefeated season, including winning the NCS title, State Championship, and were ranked first in the nation that year. The 1998 varsity team was arguably one of the best teams in De La Salle football history.
The 1997 Swimming and Diving Team: Winners of both the BVAL and the NCS title, the 1997 Swimming and Diving Team was one of the best in De La Salle history. Five seniors went on to swim at Division 1 colleges. Several All Americans were on the team. Many of the team members went back to coach swimming and diving including two of them, who have come back and taught and coached at De La Salle.
