Message from the President
Dear Friends of De La Salle,
Mark DeMarco ’78 President
We have provided
the basic structure
for the Academy to be successful, and now it is time for it
to spread its wings.
UNION FALL 2019
If you are like me, you are probably starting to ask the question—Where has the time gone? It is hard to imagine that for some of us (those who were born before 1969), was it really 50 years ago that Apollo 11 landed on the moon? Okay, enough said—you get the gist of time flying by. In this light, we need to enjoy each moment and celebrate the blessings God has given us. As another school year is underway, it is hard to believe this is my 13th year at De La Salle as President. In April, I wrote to our community in the Spartan Spotlight regarding the De La Salle Academy, and at that time, the Union had already been sent to you. So, I now share this information with you. Effective July 1, 2019, the De La Salle Academy is no longer a Division of De La Salle High School. It has become a separate school sponsored by the District of San Francisco New Orleans. When the Academy was established in 2014, the agreement for funding was for five years. This funding agreement ended June 30, 2019, and with Mr. Hofmann’s sudden passing, a new agreement was not completed. When we established the Academy, the organizational structure of the Academy was set up so that it would not be financially dependent on the High School, and securing outside funding for the Academy could not impact fundraising for the High School. During the past year, this arrangement has proven to be problematic for the High School on many levels. As we discussed what the best option for the future of the Academy would be, I, along with the Board of Trustees, determined it would be best for the Academy to stand on its own as a school. I see this transition like nurturing a young bird
preparing to leave the nest—it’s now time for the young bird to leave the nest and fly on its own. We have provided the basic structure for the Academy to be successful, and now it is time for it to spread its wings. The District of San Francisco New Orleans has agreed to sponsor the Academy. The transition between De La Salle High School of Concord, Inc. and the new school was seamless, especially for the students and families who are served. The separation from the High School had many details to work out and was a little more challenging. In the end, the Academy will occupy the same location. The business operations of the Academy, currently run by the High School, have been transferred to the new corporation. De La Salle High School was proud to establish a solid foundation for De La Salle Academy with the late Ken Hofmann. We look forward to welcoming qualified students to De La Salle High School upon their graduation from the Academy. The financial support they will receive from the generous $15,000,000 estate gift from Mr. Ken Hofmann will benefit them greatly at the High School. As always, we thank you for your continued support of Lasallian, Catholic education. In the Spirit of Saint John Baptist de La Salle,

The De La Salle “Union” is a bond of unity for the extended De La Salle family — alumni, parents, alumni parents and the many friends who make up our school’s growing family.
The School Seal
The school seal is an important part of the identity of De La Salle High School. The symbols used to make up the seal have particular meanings that reflect the values and purpose of the school. In the center of the seal is the Chi Rho (Kye Row). This is the Greek abbreviation of the title “Christ.” The first two letters of the word Christos or “Christ” are “Chi” and “Rho,” represented in the Greek alphabet as a capital “X” and “P.” The fleur-de-lis, with “lis” meaning lily in French, reminds us of our French origins with Saint John Baptist de La Salle. The lamp is a symbol of knowledge, reminding us of our primary purpose as a school — education. The section of broken chain represents freedom — freedom from ignorance. The chain surrounding the seal signifies strength and unity. “Les Hommes de Foi” is French for “Men of Faith.”

About the cover: De La Salle High School and Bob Ladouceur go hand in hand. One is rarely mentioned without the other. With over 40 years of service the school, the
numerous lives impacted by his mantra “The Perfect Effort,” it is no question why this man means so very much to our school and students; past, present, and future. His name will live in perpetuity through the dedication of the Ladouceur Athletic Performance Center, but his legacy will forever be entrenched in the tradition, mission and teachings at De La Salle High School. COMMENCEMENT
2019
President Mark DeMarco ’78 Graduation Address
This is a much-anticipated day for the Class of 2019! And, you may have noticed a group that processed in with the graduates—they are members of the first graduating class of 1969 who are celebrating their Golden Diplomas—they graduated 50 years ago and celebrated last night with a dinner. We welcome them back today! There is an amazing documentary on the life and work of Fred Rogers, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” The documentary ends with a lovely tribute to Mr. Rogers. It is part of his 2002 Commencement Address at Dartmouth College. In honor of this important day, I would like to share this part of his address with you and I have changed just a few words in it… “I’d like to give you all an invisible gift. A gift of a silent minute to
think about those who have helped you become who you are today. Some
of them may be here right now. Some may be far away. Some, like my
Theology Professor, who is in Heaven. But wherever they are, if they’ve
loved you, and encouraged you, and wanted what was best in life for you,
they’re right inside yourself. And I feel that you deserve quiet time, on
this special occasion, to devote some thought to them. So, let’s just take a
minute, in honor of those that have cared about us all along the way. One
silent minute. Whomever you’ve been thinking about, imagine how
grateful they must be, that during your silent times, you remember how
important they are to you.”

UNION UNION FALL FALL2019 2019
The neighborhood was important to Mr. Rogers. And it got me to thinking, what is really important in our neighborhood at De La Salle? Well one thing is that a lot of people have lived here for a while—and I thank the faculty and staff for their long term commitment and stability in our neighborhood. Another characteristic for me, what I hope we have instilled in you is integrity, one of our Integrated Student Outcomes—A De La Salle Graduate is a Man of Integrity. As many of you have mentioned to me, it is really hard to define integrity and that it is sometimes easier said than done. Here is what I hope you remember, having integrity means doing the right thing in a reliable way. It's a personality trait that people admire, since it means a person has a moral compass that doesn't waver. It is perhaps the most important principle of leadership because it demands truthfulness and honesty. Integrity means telling the truth even if the truth is ugly. It is the practice of being honest and showing a consistent and uncompromising adherence to strong moral and ethical principles and values. As you prepare for what lies ahead, remember that when there is irreconcilability with what you are being asked to do that violates your integrity, then you must act accordingly even if there are personal consequences. Can you imagine what the world would be like if we all embraced integrity? In today’s world I think integrity may be counter cultural as to how society wants us to be. My hope is that as you leave us today, you will guide your life
under one of the most important outcomes of our school. We have given you the tools to be a Man of Integrity— not only in word but in our actions as your older brothers and sisters. Now go and unleash it on the world and make it a better place. Class of 2019—May God and our Founder, Saint John Baptist de La Salle, guide you as you begin the next chapter of your life and please know this neighborhood will always be here for you.

Rithik Castelino, Class of 2019 Salutatorian Speech
De La Salle is unique in the diversity that we have here on campus. We have students who've risen against the odds. We have athletes and artists, actors and musicians; gay, straight, black, hispanic, asian, caucasian, and here we all are breathing the same air, enjoying and celebrating together: This moment. We talk a lot about brotherhood here on campus. That one word is a collection of ideas and emotions. That one word seems hard to describe at times, so let me expand it to a sentence or at least to a possible explanation. Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai—Roughly translated from Hindi, it means: I see my God in you. This idea of seeing God in the people around me, used to seem like the usual religious ideas that I would find in my pastor's homilies: homilies which I would usually be day dreaming through by the third sentence, but looking back now, I can see truth in those words. I recall Jesus in the eyes of my brothers when we were singing at the top of our lungs "Lean on Me" during Kairos, though many of us honestly didn't know the words. I see the truth in those words when I think of Mr. Graham getting up in front of the class with an awe-inspiring amount of passion and not because he has to, but because of some deeper love for the work that he does; when I see the way that teammates hug each other with each victory. I saw it in the way we crowded around the inner court for Ryan Abele. And you all can think of more examples than I can list in this speech. Times when you also felt this inexplicable, unexplainable feeling of joy and warmth as you connected with another human being. If no one has ever told you this before, let me tell you now; that is brotherhood. Those are the moments when we truly see the face of God. When I see you Class of 2019, and when I think of the way we've acted these four years in the presence of life's daily struggles and gifts, I see Brotherhood. Now this time might seem tinged with a bit of nervousness as we look into the future and remember that the world we will be going out into is struggling with massive problems such as global warming, anti-

immigrant sentiments, and rocky foreign relations. But as one of the greatest doctors that I know once said: "That's ok because if you're very wise and very strong, fear doesn't have to make you cruel or cowardly; fear can make you kind." Now this seems like a strange idea doesn't it? Fear is something that we are usually told is a paralyzing emotion, something that leaves us weaker and more vulnerable. You might think of that test which you were so scared of that you failed to study for it, but then ... I also invite you to think of that moment in the sports game or performance, or that other test, when you were scared, but you used that as motivation to push on. "Fear doesn't have to make you cruel or cowardly." And looking back at those problems and thinking about the gifts that De La Salle has given to us: the lessons in Faith, Integrity, and Scholarship, I'll say with confidence that we have the necessary tools to take the fear we might face today and use it to change the world. So let's be the men who change the world with our passion and our love. Let's be the men who stand up against sexual harassment and violence. Let's be the men that I know us to be who will rise up for what we know is right. And if you ever feel hesitant to do so, look into the eyes of the brother next to you. And remember that you are not alone. Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai—I see my God in each and every one of you, and he will never leave your side.
Connor Livingston, Class of 2019 Valedictorian Speech
Twelve years of schooling, eighteen years of living, hundreds of quizzes and tests, and thousands of school days have all culminated to this moment. This moment, on this stage, in the year 2019 at De La Salle High School. In fact, everything we have ever done, everything we have ever experienced, from Hirsch tests to Pelster essays to talks from Mr. Aliotti, brings us to this present moment. Welcome yourself into it. Welcome, faculty, staff, students, family members, and guests into this moment. Take a look around, take it all in. Because this moment right here, together at De La Salle High School will never come again. But this is graduation, you say,
campus news
this is one of the defining days of our lives! Well what makes this day, this moment, any different from all the rest? Truthfully, nothing does. Nothing makes this day any greater than our first one on this campus. Now, we may tell ourselves that we have been brought to this precipice of no return where our lives change forever the moment we step out of these halls towards college or whatever the next phase of our life holds. And while it is surely true our lives change, the moments don’t. Every moment we live is an opportunity. And none are more or less great than any other. What I mean is that while it is good to be excited and joyous and probably a little or a lot nervous at the prospect of moving beyond the halls of De La Salle, it is important to remember that the people around us, the opportunities we have, the time we spend, the moments we find ourselves in are always important. They are always precious. Four years ago when I stepped onto this campus for the first time, this idea was nowhere near my train of thought. The idea that people, opportunities, and time are all precious, I mean sure that’s nice but why does it matter? Slowly, over the course of my four years here, the idea began to take shape. Beginning with my freshman year, as I learned time management in Mr. Hirsch’s math class, while being introduced to miracles and the Bible in Sister Jodi’s freshman religion. Next, I would spend two years exploring the works of Dickens, Melville, and Shakespeare in English while delving into the birth, death, and resurrection of this remarkable country in U.S. History. But I didn’t really appreciate the magnitude of it all until this year, when I went through Kairos and the always mind-blowing discussions in Mr. Graham’s English class. I think I can speak for most seniors when I say that the culminating experience of De La Salle’s unique community would be the Kairos Retreat. And what is the caption that graces everyone’s ensuing Instagram photos from Bishop’s Ranch? Live The Fourth. And I do not think I am revealing any Top-Secret Kairos secrets by translating that today to simply: Live. Live out your moments. Because they are all our moments. At De La Salle, one thing is emphasized above all else. It’s about those shared moments, with classmates, with family, with friends, when we look at the person next to us and see our own struggles reflected back. As a cross country and track runner here at De La Salle, this idea subconsciously became incredibly important. Every time I found myself brought to my knees, humbled and gasping for air
by one last 400 or hill rep that broke my heart for the hundredth time, it would only take a look at my teammates in similar stages of pain and agony to feel the hardened resolve and friendship tempered by hundreds of miles run together. It helped me appreciate those moments of pain, of joy, spent together. You see as a runner, moments in time are especially important to me. They are the difference between a race won or lost, a record broken or forever lost to history. These moments in time determine my success. In fact, they determine all our successes. But what does that success mean, how does it manifest? All of us have dreams, maybe it’s to start a company, maybe it’s medical school, or maybe it’s the Army. Regardless, all of us want to be successful in our lives. Our parents, teachers, coaches, peers have all told us of the potential we have to be successful and surely De La Salle has set us on the path. But what does that mean? Is it the number of zeros in your bank account, or is it starting a nice family, maybe it’s writing a book or opening a surf shop. Whatever you may think it is, I think the American poet Ralph Waldo Emerson has you beat. He said, “To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.” Emerson says that because you lived here, in this very moment, not in the past, not in the future, but in this moment right now. To live here and help others breathe easier, that is to have succeeded. And you can make your millions and go get that doctorate and chase after every dream and goal imaginable, but remember at the end of the day what makes us successful. It’s the challenges faced, the lives touched, the moments shared, the people we raised out of darkness. It doesn’t take being St. Jean-Baptiste de La Salle, and it can’t only take place at De La Salle. What it does require, however, is that you appreciate your moments in this life and you take hold of each and every one, together with those people you share this success with. And I am extremely proud today to take hold of this moment right now with the class of 2019 and share this success with my brothers.

This educator “works tirelessly,” “is selfless,” and “is constantly meeting with kids.” Another peer wrote, “I admire and actually aspire to giving students the quantity and quality of feedback that [this educator] gives students. [This teacher] is 100%+ dedicated to academic coaching and mentoring and helping students to achieve strong standards.” Another colleague summarized many of the qualities that this educator’s peers celebrated over and over by writing that this educator, “is not only an outstanding teacher, but a wonderful human being. Great colleague, unpretentious, very humble. Extremely dedicated to his profession and to his students.”
This educator’s Department Chair wrote a beautiful and moving assessment of this teacher’s gifts and contributions:
“His ability to connect the literature in his classes to the experience of the human condition is exemplary. He has an innate ability to establish relevancy and encourage depth of
understanding. He is deeply committed to honoring the dignity in all humans, especially his students. He holds his students to very high standards, not only in terms of their learning but in terms of the respect they exhibit toward their fellow man/woman. He gives freely of his time, spending countless hours with students at lunch and after school. He is also a man who looks out for the "marginalized." He is a gifted teacher and a special human being.” It is with great pleasure that we announce our newest Lasallian educator of the year. Please help us in congratulating Mr. Rick Graham as our Lasallian Educator of the Year for 2019.
For Serving Our Community, We Thank You
At the end of the 2018-19 school year, De La Salle High School saw pivital members of their faculty, staff, and the Christian Brothers depart from Winton Drive. June of 2019 marked the retirement of three cornerstones of De La Salle High School, whom had more than 80 years of combined service to the school, and whose combined years as educators was in excess of 110 years. Mrs. Mary Ann Mattos, who most recently served as the Director of Academic Services, was at De La Salle for 20 years, Mr. Jack Dyer, who retired as the Vice President for Campus Life, was at De La Salle since 1997 (22 years), and English department faculty member Mr. Steve Oelschlager retired after 40 years at the school. July of 2019 also saw the closing of the Christian Brothers Community on the De La Salle Campus, as Brother Lawrence Haley, FSC and Brother Anthony Lenz, FSC were reassigned.
De La Salle Bids Farewell to Brothers Community After 54 Years on Campus
Brother Lawrence moved to Mont La Salle in Napa, Calif., to be the Director of the Holy
Family Community, where the retired Brothers live. Brother Lawrence completed his time at De La Salle as a Religious Studies teacher and in the Advancement Office as the webmaster and campus photographer. Prior to that he spent time as the Sports Information Director for the Athletics Department. Brother Anthony, joined the De La Salle community in 2015, becoming the first Brother to serve at the De La Salle Academy, where he worked in the library and also served as Recess and Homework Hour Supervisor for the school. He was reassigned to Saint Mary’s College in Moraga. De La Salle began the 2018-19 school year with three Brothers on campus, but Brother Michael Saggau, FSC, moved to Napa in September of 2018. De La Salle President Mark DeMarco said, “This is an end of an era since the founding of the school in 1965. It was a vibrant group of Brothers who served our community so well. The Brothers will be missed. I know we all have wonderful memories of the men who served us on a daily basis. We are a school because of the foundation they laid for us, and we are in a strong place to continue the Lasallian Mission at 1130 Winton Drive.” Even with the departure of the Brothers from De La Salle, the Board of Trustees ensures that the Lasallian, Catholic principles on which the school was founded, will remain alive. The faculty and staff of the school will continue to operate according to the educational and spiritual principles of the Brothers and their founder, Saint John Baptist de La Salle, as the Five Core Principles guide the work of any Lasallian school.

20 YEARS
De La Salle Celebrates the Retirements of Three Employees with Over 80 Years Combined Experience at School
Mary Ann Mattos, was at the school for 20 years. Although Mrs.
Mattos is the shortest tenured of the three retirees at De La Salle, she worked in education the longest, at 44 years. “I knew from the time that I was in first grade that I wanted to be a teacher. When I was growing up, there was never a Halloween that I didn’t dress up as a teacher. From the very beginning, there was nothing more that I wanted in life than to make my passion the same as my career.” For the past four decades, Mrs. Mattos has followed that passion through her Catholic school learning as a student at the Ramona Convent and Saint Mary’s College. Right out of college she was a middle school history teacher, then she spent 15 years at Carondelet High School as the Dean of Discipline, before working for the Oakland Diocese for six years as an elementary school principal. Having been in the Lasallian charism at Saint Mary’s, and the fact that her husband Mike is a former Brother, her connection to De La Salle High School was a perfect fit. She joined the De La Salle Community in 1999 as the Director of Studies, before quickly moving into a Vice Principal for Academics role. “What makes me feel the best about coming to work at De La Salle is that I have done something to either help, inspire, motivate, or challenge the kids. The heartfelt, one-on-one connections have mattered the most. It’s humbling to hear so many people say thank you for all that you have done for our family. That whole notion that it takes a village and working with families has really been important to me.” Mrs. Mattos and her husband Mike, who have a son Nicholas (DLS Class of 2000) and a daughter Rebecca (CHS Class of 2002), will now share their retirements together, as they travel, fish in the Sierras, and start working on her “Bucket List”— which includes more than 100 items. “It’s time to begin the next chapter of my life, and this seems like a clear and wonderful time to do it. I want to be able to enjoy the years I have ahead of me.”
22 YEARS
Jack Dyer ended his time at De La Salle after 22 years, retiring from
his position as the Vice President for Campus Life. Working at Catholic high schools for more than 30 years, Mr. Dyer served a number of roles while at De La Salle, which started as a faculty member in 1997. “I like the exchange of information and personalities, I’m a people person in that way. As I worked this job, the multiple changes that took place throughout the day were fulfilling, but also exhausting at times. I love what I do, I love the people I work with, and I love the kids, but I’m ready to move on to the next phase of my life.” Before joining the De La Salle family, Mr. Dyer spent 10 years as a science teacher at Saint Patrick-Saint Vincent High School in Vallejo, Calif. Mr. Dyer’s first role at De La Salle was also in the science department, taking over as the school’s marine biology teacher. After five years as a faculty member, Mr. Dyer moved into the school’s administration department as an assistant principal. Over his last 15 years, he continued to serve the students on a daily basis, as he was involved with many Campus Life events, Student Leadership activities,

oversight of the many campus clubs and student organizations, and he even coached the De La Salle and Carondelet trap team for the past several years. “As a teacher and through leadership, I’ve recognized that students need to have a voice as part of education, we have to give them the opportunity to provide their input. Through leadership we teach them that and then they have to utilize those skills. Sometimes when you do that they surprise you, especially the kids that are quiet.” While working at De La Salle, Mr. Dyer and his wife Karen, saw their three sons William ’09, John-Michael ‘11, and Sam ’15 graduate from the school.

and was a mainstay in the school’s English department ever since. Over the past 40 years, Mr. Oelschlager has seen a number of changes to the school, but one thing always remained the same—the relationship with his students. “I have learned trust from the students, and I believe they trust me. I can say that I trust a lot of my students for their insights and opinions, and how they see the world. They taught me to look at the world through their eyes.” Although Mr. Oelschlager will retire as a fulltime faculty member, he will continue to serve the De La Salle community as a summer school teacher and a volunteer tutor in the De La Salle Learning Center. In addition to continuing to work with De La Salle students during his retirement, Mr. Oelschlager would like to learn to play the harmonica, travel to Mt. Rushmore, the Grand Canyon, the South, and cruise to British Columbia and Alaska, all while trying his hand at writing. Maybe someday you will see the name Steve Oelschlager on the spine of a book. “What’s kept me at De La Salle all these years is the community, the people I work with, and the kids. The responses from the students make me feel great, loved, appreciated, and I know that I have done something with my life that has contributed and given back.”
As De La Salle High School moves through the 2019-20 school year, it will be with a different feel. The Brothers will be gone and employees who have loved, guided, inspired, and instructed the many students over the past two to four decades will be missed. But the Lasallian tradition of the school that these individuals lived everyday will continue to be an integral part of the daily life on the2 Winton Drive campus. Page 1

The
LIBRARY De La Salle
S
tudents in high school today are sometimes called the “Internet Generation”—the first to grow up with easy and regular access to the online world, a place where search engines could take them to wherever their inquiring minds lead them. But in this wired world, the school library, with its stacks of books, study spaces and experienced librarians still matters, and at De La Salle High School, it is as crucial to education as the classroom. “They’re intellectual spaces and physical spaces that foster and make possible the type of cross-disciplinary culture that De La Salle is seeking to instill in students,” says Vice President for Academic Life, Heather Alumbaugh. Libraries, Dr. Alumbaugh says, are as important now as they were in the founding days of the United States, when Benjamin Franklin viewed them as the “first institution of democracy.” And with librarians who are “very innovative and very attuned” to the needs of the student body, they foster the habits of the mind that lead to critical thinking and an engaged and empowered citizen. “They’re very good at meeting boys where they are, and getting them to where we need them to be,” she said, pointing to the SpartanGuides as one example, and to the fact

A Flourishing Place that the library is “literally packed all the time” with boys. At many public schools in California, librarians are scarce, with only one librarian to nearly 8,000 students, according to the California Department of Education. De La Salle, with a student body of about 1,050 students, has two full-time and one part-time librarian. Librarians are on the faculty and on every major committee, and have been involved with the 21st Century Curriculum initiative of the school. The integration of the library with the curriculum and Mission of the school is crucial to students, who may be learning not just lessons, but also which books fit their reading style and how to navigate ways of getting to the latest and most reliable research and thinking online. Elaine Seed, the head librarian who has been at the school since 1997, says that some people may not be aware of the changing role of the library and students over time. “People tend to think of libraries the way they were in the ’50s, and think that’s how they should be now,” Seed says. But like Dr. Alumbaugh, Seed thinks that libraries should not be just a collection of books on shelves and a quiet space. “When Benjamin Franklin first started libraries in the United States, it was more in the sense of a community
gathering place,” she said. “They were places where there was access to information that is always free. Where you see flourishing libraries, you will see flourishing democracy and informed citizens. Every dictator has always burned books and controlled the press.” The library, which was remodeled in 2009, is that kind of flourishing space, well-lit with traditional shelves and study carrels, but also with large monitors for joint learning, rooms for group discussion or quiet, and an active after-school hub not just for study and homework but also communal activities like puzzles and board games like Monopoly, Risk, and chess. Seed jokes that she’s “convinced that anatomically a teenage boy cannot whisper.” So boys are also able to learn or socialize, without fear of constant shushing. “Every day, they are talking and laughing with each other,” she says. They are also allowed to eat at a patio outside the library, extending the community beyond the plate glass windows. The library has some 17,000 books, used not just for research or classroom reading but also for the Accelerated Reading program, and in forms ranging from books the boys’ grandfathers would recognize, but also graphic novels and audio books to meet different learning styles. Its online SpartanGuides (spartanguides.dlshs.org.), have a wealth of information for books and research papers for a wide variety of courses at the school, as well as areas where students can look up material on how to research reports, prepare for careers and even for special events on campus, such as the partnership with the co-founder of Mentors for Violence Prevention which were included during the Annual Respect Week. The library staff helps students learn how to learn, Alumbaugh says, teaching media literacy and research skills so that they can recognize reliable sources and information that may not be the first items to appear in a search engine query. “There are certain skills that you need to acquire that you’re not going to acquire for yourself,” she says, citing the difference between an abstract and a published article. “You can’t be a thinker without knowing how to do these kinds of things.” Seed says librarians read every class syllabus, and tries to

gear book displays and offerings to complement what students are learning in the classroom. For instance, if a class is looking at the 1960s, there will be books about events during that period, such as black power, John F. Kennedy, and the Cuban missile crisis. She also makes sure to have books with information that boys will want to read, such as growing up, health, and sports, that may not be assigned in class. The library also is sensitive to students who are struggling, with a book club geared for them to achieve their outside reading commitments. “We don’t lower our expectations,” Alumbaugh said. “We increase their access to those skills.” Seed say she tries to keep a variety of books that boys will be interested in, noting that they are often not interested in the same kind of novels, many with female protagonists, that girls are likely to read. De La Salle students are not very interested in biographies, she says, but they love science fiction and adventure. They prefer sports fiction to sports non-fiction. Seed, with her decades of experience at work and with her own children, also gives practical advice to the students, including to drop something they don’t like. “I tell the boys, life is too short to read a book you can’t stand,” she says with a smile. Even boys who claim nothing interests them always find something that captures their attention. “It’s a real hit for us when we turn the kid on to reading,” she says. And Seed says librarians help students who may not like to read see the reason for improving their skills, pointing out that they need to read to fill out a job application, vote, and be an active citizen. Going beyond reading and learning, the library helps fulfill its role of contributing to student success by keeping a lending library of textbooks in case a boy has left his text at home, and some aids such as lapdesks for boys who may have trouble sitting still at a table. Alumbaugh says the library is a vital place for students, and that she uses it all the time herself. “Anything I ask the students to do, I do myself,” she said. “I’m constantly in the library.”

Student Athlete Managers Give
“The Perfect Effort”
Behind the Scenes
O
n the De La Salle High School campus there are 14 California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) sanctioned athletic programs with a total of 36 teams across the varying levels. In total, approximately 800 of the 1,040 students at De La Salle will participate on one of these teams. However, not all the participants are student-athletes. Some of these team members are student managers, who normally spend more time involved with the daily team activities than the players. “Our student-managers embody the Mission of the school,” said De La Salle head varsity football coach Justin Alumbaugh ’98. “They do it because they love the team, the school, and the comradery that goes along with it.” These student managers in many ways are part of the team, although they always seem to go unnoticed on the field. But to their teammates and coaches, they are an integral component to the team’s success. The team student manager is in the middle ground between coaches and players. They are students like the players, but they don’t actually compete, and they work with the coaches on a number of activities, but don't actually coach. “The student managers for our basketball program play a vital role in all day-to-day operations within our program,” said varsity basketball coach Justin Argenal ’04. “They are often a bridge between our student-athletes and coaches. De La Salle basketball managers function as a part of our team.” These “teammates” go unnoticed to the fans because they don’t get the recognition the players do, mostly because you don’t see them on the playing field. But they are very active with their respective teams. “We lift and run with the team and that’s no small thing in a De La Salle practice. We’re there for the entire practice, and before and after practice as

well,” said football student manager Jonah Hinckley ’19. “We are part of the team and we help our teammates. Even though we’re not on the field with them, we are the ones getting things ready for them and helping them be successful.” The student manager’s role is important to making life a little easier for the coaching staff by handling the behind-the-scene tasks, while being supportive teammates for the players. Coach Alumbaugh added, “They put in countless hours of behind-the-scenes work. While they don't receive their names in the paper or the attention from fans during the game, they are essential to the success of our team and represent the type of selfless dedication that our founder preached.” Across the different sports at De La Salle a student manager’s role varies, but each team’s student managers are extremely important. Nothing happens at practice that a manager does not have their hands in. Coach Argenal added, “Our student managers participate in all off season training in the fall, spring, and summer. During the winter season they help set up for practice, help our practices stay on task

by running the clock, are in charge of filming, help with scouting, play a major role in gear inventory, and the list goes on and on.” Whether it be rebounding a ball in basketball, adjusting a helmet in football, or fixing a glove on the baseball field, the managers are the first line to help the players, while also making sure the coaches have everything they need to run a smooth practice, and ultimately helping the program. De La Salle won five North Coast Section Championships during the 2018-19 school year (football, basketball, wrestling, lacrosse, and baseball). The football team, basketball team, and baseball team all have student managers, and each contributed to their team’s ultimate achievement. “When you see the players succeed and you know that you played a role in their success,” says Rocco Locicero ’19, basketball student manager. “The players make us feel that we are part of that success and included in everything.” What do the student managers at De La Salle do? In the De La Salle basketball program, they are responsible for making sure the clocks are set up and the balls are pumped up and work scoreboards, the clock, and the pads during practice. With the football program they workout with the team before practice; during practice help the coaching staff with drills; then after practice, breakdown and edit practice video for the coaches and players to watch. “As a manager here, I was able to live out what the De La Salle football experience is supposed to be,” said Hinckley. “I learned a great work ethic, respect for others, and sacrificing your mind and body for others. It gave me the opportunity to learn life skills that I don’t think I would have learned. These skills will carry over into my future, allowing me to build relationships, have a good work ethic, and be respectful of others.” For baseball, the five managers are responsible for assisting the coaches with daily tasks for practice, and on game days they track pitches, manage the scoreboard, play music between innings and for walkup songs, manage the GameChanger scoring app, and post updates on the De La Salle baseball twitter account.
“The most rewarding thing about being a manager is that you’re part of the team and a part of every win,” said baseball student manager J.J. Abele ’19. “During away games it’s really cool because you get to be in the dugout and cheer on the guys – and you can even heckle the other team. It's just a lot of fun being a part of the team. We get to do the work behind-the-scenes and still get to experience the wins.” But with those team responsibilities, the student managers are also the ones that when something goes wrong, the coaches turn to and say ‘what happened’, or ‘get it fixed as quick as possible’. It’s a very underappreciated role that most college athletic programs have. De La Salle is unique in that most high school programs don’t have student managers that are as involved as the ones at De La Salle. “Other people have come in and told us that we are doing the same work that a college basketball manager does,” said Locicero. At most high schools, student managers primarily keep team stats, and the team takes care of most of the other aspects of getting prepped for practice. But De La Salle Athletics has a bit of the college feel. “We have been blessed with several great managers that have gone on to manage at the collegiate level, and I feel like that tradition will continue with our current managers within the program,” said Argenal. “I have even had college coaches come to our practices and tell me that they want to recruit our managers! I am very thankful to have them!” Life as a student manager in high school isn’t the most rewarding role. Many spend countless hours completing tasks that seem to go unnoticed by most, but to the coaches and players in these programs the student manager is a key component to each team’s ultimate success. During the 2018-19 school year at De La Salle there were two managers for the varsity football team, two managers for the varsity basketball, and five managers for the varsity baseball team. 2018 Football Student Managers Jonah Hinckley ‘19 Chris Yakas ‘20

n Sunday, October 6, 2019, the De La Salle High School Community gathered to dedicate and celebrate its newest facility, the Ladouceur Athletic Performance Center. The day celebrated the opening of the new center, but also honored the man in which it is named in honor of—Bob Ladouceur. Bob Ladouceur’s success can be measured, not only on the scoreboard, but by how he has taught and inspired, young men to learn about the rhythms for a successful life of meaning and service. His impact and legacy will be felt for years to come. Construction is complete and the students, coaches, and staff have taken occupancy of the newest refurbished and remodeled space on campus. But the game isn’t over yet. We are on the brink of the final touchdown to bring this project to completion. With the help of our De La Salle community, the school has secured $5,000,000 for the facility, but an additional $750,000 is needed to bring this effort to a close. Help us bring this Perfect Effort to a completion, by investing in our students. 18

The De La Salle Alumni Association continues to build on our efforts to educate alumni on the various funding initiatives of the school. Many are still surprised to learn that tuition does not cover the full cost to educate a student throughout the school year and our endowment is still in its infancy (in comparison to other schools) – but continues to grow…

Alumni: Cameron Colvin ’04 – The Brotherhood Endures Like steel, Cameron Colvin ’04 was forged in fire.
is father died when he was 6, and his mother when he was 15. His best friend and teammate on the De La Salle Spartan football team—Terrance Kelly—was murdered in Richmond in 2004, shortly after they graduated and the Spartans achieved a record 151-game winning streak. At Oregon University, which he had planned to attend with Terrance, Cameron was beset by injuries, but his ability led him to achieve his childhood dream of playing professional football for the San Francisco 49ers. The lessons Cameron learned as a Spartan and as football player —commitment, accountability and humility—are now leading him to excel in his current professional and personal life as an entrepreneur, business owner and a philanthropist. “I remember when we first got to high school, Coach Ladouceur or Coach Eidson said, ‘These are the guys you’re going to be tied to for the rest of your life,’ ” Cameron said in a telephone interview from his office in Phoenix. “That’s true. You’re building your character, who you’re going to be the rest of your life.” “Being accountable for your actions outweighs 151 games,” he said. “You have to look your brother in your eye and say, I have to be accountable.” For Cameron, as for other Spartans, his brothers included not just the football team, but all the Spartans in the hallways and classrooms. “The school was amazing,” he remarked. “When I first arrived there (from junior high in Pittsburg), I had no clue about the culture and the brotherhood. From the very first day, De La Salle pretty much changed my life.” The Brotherhood was a central part of his De La Salle experience. “We can say there are two different sides of brotherhood,” Cameron said. “It comes down to leaving no man behind. It was like that in the school aspect as well. There were so many guys who didn’t play football or any sport who became best friends of ours. The entire program was a brotherhood. Everyone had a common goal and everyone helped one another.’’ It is not surprising, then, that Cameron has tried to continue to help others in his professional life. After football, he founded CamCo Inc., now CamCo Commercial, an international real estate company whose goal is “to empower the future leaders of our world by creating a network of businesses and business opportunities that will provide employment for thousands of people around the world.”

He is also CEO and founder of Rise Above Development, a venture capital and real estate development company and Rise Above Creative Solutions. Rising above was a constant in Cameron’s life. He and the Spartans managed to do that on the football field with the 151game winning streak, which was the subject of the 2014 movie “When the Game Stands Tall,” based on the book by Neil Hayes. Ser’Darius Blain portrayed him in the movie, which features the stories of many players, including Cameron during the time of his mother’s death, his friend and teammate Terrance Kelly, the culmination of the 151game streak, and the murder of Terrance Kelly. The book and movie went on to explore the following 2004 football season when the streak ended. “I think it was a great thing. They told our story,” Cameron said. “People were very intrigued by what happened. I was proud for them to tell the story of how amazing Terrance was.” Although Coach Bob Ladouceur tried repeatedly to downplay the streak, Cameron remembers as locking him and other players in. “They programmed us not to worry about this thing,” he said. “But when you’re 15, you think about it. I thought of it as an extra motivation. It was like upholding a tradition.” Several of his teammates went with him to Oregon University, joining older Spartans already playing for the Ducks. “Oregon was a phenomenal place. Our entire goal was to implement the Spartan Way to our teammates. Of course you get some pushback,” he said with a laugh, noting that being accountable to others and looking out for teammates was not always everyone’s priority on other fields. He said his De La Salle teammates remain “my best friends.” “With my mother passing, I was able to bond with so many guys on that team. Those guys were there with me. Those guys can call me at any time.” Cameron prepared himself for life after football, saying “I’ve always looked at myself as more than an athlete.” His Rise Above company fits where he stands.
“It’s raising our standards every day, and that’s how you excel and go to those next levels. Every day as a Spartan, it was about rising above. There’s always something to rise above.” Cameron loves the challenge and the negotiation of real estate and investing, saying, “You have to study the market. It’s like football. You have to study.” As a high school student, he studied future careers at the Thursday night team dinners at different players’ houses, asking his teammates, “What does your dad do? I’d hear ‘my dad is a stock broker, my dad owns car businesses.’ I thought about how does one buy stocks, own dealerships.” With his success, he has also become a philanthropist, a natural for him because, “I was that kid that needed a helping hand. I was the kid who needed a pat on the back.” Cameron is the CEO of Linking Sports & Communities, a nonprofit whose mission is to enhance relationships between athletes, sports organizations and communities. He also puts on large turkey drives in Pittsburg, along with alumni from De La Salle and Carondelet high schools. Cameron is also an author, with “NeverStop: Cameron Colvin’s 12 Principles of Success,” a 2016 book in which he chronicled how he overcame tragedy, and “NeverStop: The Power of Daily Affirmations.” He also shares affirmations and insights on Twitter under the handle @DrCamColvin. With his busy schedule, including international travel for his business, Cameron doesn’t get back to De La Salle much, but he said it continues to have a profound effect on his life. That includes history teacher Bob Sansoe, who also was the team photographer. “This guy was literally no nonsense,” Cameron said. “If I wasn’t prepared for a class or didn’t do the reading, I’d hear about it. You’re intimidated by someone who holds you accountable, but those are the kinds of people who breed great men. To this very day when I see him it’s literally like running into a father figure.” Cameron said he wanted to share some words for students now on campus: “Be patient, trust your journey and surround yourself with good people. Those three things can really change your outlook of everything that’s going on.”

A Letter from the President of De La Salle Alumni Association: Scott Roberts ’93
Dear Spartans,
With the growth of great programs and facilities, it’s truly an exciting time to be a part of the DLS mission. 2019 has been a momentous year with the expansion of the alumni community to include a new Student Alumni Association, the opening of the Ladouceur Athletic Performance Center, and the 2nd annual DLS Giving Day! Join us and give back on Tuesday, Oct 22nd, to celebrate #BecauseDeLaSalle Day.
DLS was, and continues to be, an important part of the lives of so many of us. The teachers, coaches and staff helped shape us into the men we are today. I am so honored to announce the recognition of someone who was a force of change in my life; a favored teacher and in my case, coach, Bob Ladouceur. Thousands of us had the good fortune to have studied and played under his tutelage over the years. Those of us lucky enough to have played for him are familiar with his mantra which was, and is still today, "We're not asking you to play a perfect game. That's impossible. What we're asking of you -- and what you should be asking of yourself -- is that you give a perfect effort." That mantra has carried forth through The Perfect Effort in support of the Ladouceur Athletic Performance Center. This tribute to Coach Ladouceur is a small way of recognizing his legacy and thanking him for the immeasurable impact he has had in our community, on our campus, and in the lives of so many men. The facility, named in his honor, increased the workout space by 250% and will impact 38 teams, 7 Club Sports and a whopping 860 student athletes with an average GPA of 3.2.
DLS gave us more than a simple High School education: we made life-long friendships; learned what it meant to work on a team; developed a strong worth ethic and life-long passion for learning and giving. As Alumni, we play a significant role in determining the future development of DLS. We came to learn and left to serve. Your gifts ensure deserving students receive the necessities of a quality educational experience including up-to-date facilities and much needed scholarships to attend this prestigious institution. Your support provides students more than just a place to go to school. Your donation gives them the opportunity to live the Spartan brotherhood and affords them a quality education to propel them into a bright future.
Support from alumni like you made the building and opening of the Ladouceur Athletic Performance Center and the possibilities it opens for students into a reality. We’re thrilled the Center is open and hope you will come by and see the changes for yourself.
As always, we’d love to hear from you about what you’re doing. Drop us a line, or just come on by.
Thank you again for the honor of serving as your Alumni Association President. There’s never been a better time to re-engage and be reinvigorated with Spartan Pride!
Go Spartans!

Program leaders hope to help produce more well-prepared doctors to advance health for California's largest ethnic group. According to a study by the Latino Physicians of California, less than 5 percent of physicians in the state are Latino. “We have a very diverse state, said Cynthia Mendez, a Family Medicine Doctor at Kaiser Permanente. “More than 40 – almost 50 percent of our population is Latino, and that doesn't actually match our workforce for physicians.” The program's long-term goal is to help close the gap that exists between the number of Latino patients and doctors in California. “I hope to encourage more Latino students to not only enter the medical field but health professions in general and health policy just to meet the needs of the population in California,” Barajas said. Barajas will be attending UCLA in the fall, where he will be studying psychology and neuroscience. He says the Prep Médico program has given him a firsthand look at how important it is for doctors to establish a relationship with their patients. (Author: Daniela Pardo, www.abc10.com)

De La Salle Celebrates its First Golden Reunion with the Class of 1969
e La Salle celebrated its first Golden Reunion this past May. Members of the Class of 1969 celebrated this tremendous milestone throughout graduation weekend. As part of weekend’s festivities, members of the class attended the school’s Baccalaureate Mass on Friday evening, and a campus tour led by current faculty member Greg Brown-Davis ’97. On Saturday, a hosted reunion dinner with classmates and guests was enjoyed by all. On Sunday, class members were part of the procession in the Class of 2019’s graduation ceremony, and each attendee received the De La Salle High School’s first ever Golden Diplomas. We look forward to welcoming back many members of the Class of 1970 for next May’s celebration.
The Power of Prayer and Brotherhood After the Class of 1969’s Golden Reunion, the Alumni Relations Office received a heartfelt communication from the spouse of one of our alums, Jill Meyer. Unfortunately, due to open heart surgery, Chris Meyer was unable to attend the reunion and his wife Jill had to learn how to be computer savvy quickly to cancel reservation and inform classmates of his unfortunately lack of attendance at the reunion. Through the grapevine, Jill and Chris learned that he was mentioned at the Mass that was held on Friday night. They were in awe of the power of prayer being lifted up for them and all in need. Chris came out of surgery around 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 25th during the Reunion Weekend. He was off the breathing tube quickly and stayed off of it. Family members returned to the hotel that evening, and later the next day an intern mentioned to Jill and her family that Chris had had a visitor. They learned it was a gentleman that said he had gone to school with Chris at De La Salle. “It turned out to be Jim Morrow who Chris had not seen for 50 years. Jim went to De La Salle for six months during his sophomore year until his family moved to Texas. This gentleman took the time before his plane flight back to Texas from San Jose Airport to find the ICU unit, told the intern who he was, and asked if Chris wanted to see him. In my book, that is a miracle…Jim took that “God” sent moment and followed it through with the gift of God’s love and mercy to stand next to Chris’ bedside and bless Chris with a friendship that has had a 50-year absence to it. I am in awe at this gentleman’s true heart and soul and sharing it with Chris. I would love to pass on a huge ‘THANK YOU’.” Thank you Jill Meyer for sharing your wonderful story and to Jim Morrow for his thoughtfulness. On behalf of the De La Salle community we send prayers and well wishes to you and Chris for a continued speedy recovery.

From Father Lasalle ‘69 “Being promoted to the Golden Diploma was a powerful moment. This experience affirmed the truth that De La Salle is so much more than an academic institution. We are a family that together and by association lives in our lives. My class and I may have graduated 50 years ago, but being able to share Graduation Day with the Class of 2019 told me so powerfully that DLS is my home. More than ever, I am proud to say I am a Spartan from De La Salle!” Vive Jesus dans nos coeurs. A jamais.

De La Salle and Carondelet Fall Reunions
We had a very busy reunion season this past fall. Almost 400 Carondelet and De La Salle alumni and their guests came back to celebrate with their classmates, while also reconnecting with our schools. In addition to class reunions, we also held athletic reunions with a variety of sports hosting alumni back to campus and either competed in competition between alumni and varsity players or joined in pre-game events. Besides a number of athletic reunions being scheduled; including baseball, swimming, wrestling and lacrosse, we are also beginning the planning process for joint class reunions with Carondelet next summer and fall.
