Modernism What Is It ?
Modernism is a movement that was dominating the world of art and design in the late 1800’s. Going down to the routes of modernism show that artists were trying to create a world that would break free from the suffering and conflict. Visually the term means designing around the grid using set frames all being confined to a kind of set rule.
Modernism was what really got modern graphic design into orbit. The movement is split into segments such as Cubism, Russian Constructivism and more famously the Bauhaus. The combination of Cubism and Futurism are what really helped create modern graphic design. Modernism went on to influence further movements such as Dada, helping develop the world of graphic design.
The meaning of the term ‘Modernism’ is the term used to embrace the diverse range of art movements and ideas that emerged during the early beginning of the 20th century. It helped profoundly influence the subsequent development of art, architecture and graphic design. For sure there was a wide spread utopian belief that mechanization and technology if properly used

could help produce a better less divided society. Modernistic design is a very refined and restricted form of art in being based around grids and certain colours. Modernistic design tends to be very specific in the design that comes out of it. People could say that it is an inexpressive form of art or an inexpressive form of design method that restricts a designer or artist from fully showing what their talent can help create.

Modernism What Is It ?
One of the most well
known and influential designers associated with Post-Modernism Neville Brody, is a face of what the term Post-Modern means. His new experimental designs such as the highly recognizable Oceans 11 are some great examples of what Post-Modern design is. In this new era breaking away from the grid was something that brought high levels of determination
for designers to use their imagination and experimentation to wrap and create the wildest new graphic design. Text flowing off the page, shapes and colours in random positions and combinations all come together to create some amazing work. Post Modernism has influenced many designers and traces can still be found in design work from artists of this era.
The Post-Modernism era arrived on the
scene after the Modernism era, with the intention of breaking from the grid and changing peoples assumptions about art and design. Despite the grid being some what of a revolution to the world of art and design in how it allowed it to move forwards people still began to find the new Post-Modern style of graphic design to be much more of an interest to look at and be involved with rather than the older and seemingly more restrained modernistic style of graphic design.

What
Are We Now?
So is this where we stand? Looking at a re-invention of the two... Modern PostModernism? The vast acceleration of design is causing a high production rate for artwork and it’s development. Each using their own style and methods of creating the new graphics. Design has always gotten it’s inspiration from pretty much everywhere. Allowing designers to experiment with any technique they like and merge it with another. This is generally the development of PostModern, allowing the creating of hybrid like designs showing a rapid development in technique and technology. A main cause for the arguing is that modern illustrators tend not to use the grid in their work. Using their own compositional structures and making the most of what they’ve got. In the design world are we still in the post modern era? This is something that has been a main cause for argument for a long time now. For sure we have moved on from Modernistic styles but surely todays design is just a mature version of PostModern design? Coincidently there are elements embedded within modern graphic design that suggest that the two past movements are still there deep inside. Newer generations of designers are being re introduced to the two older

movements so inspiration is coming from the older sources. But with the advancements in technology and the designers way of thinking it has to mean that the embedded parts of history in design are so minute that it is extremely hard to fully relate it to design from the 1900’s? It is definitely something that no one can truly work out or find enough sources to suggest. have we have moved on?

Artist Typeface
This segment of work has been
provided by DLTDesign. This is our way of giving a designer a chance to show how they respond to briefs and challenges in the designers world.
Keeping in mind the dilemma in
trying to work out what era the graphic design world is in. An example of what people suggest the reason we’re still in a combination of both modernistic and post-modernistic times are the two typefaces shown to the right and below.
Below is a segment where we found a little more into what a designer does through their day.
Both of these typefaces to an extent are restrained and are built using the grid, and yet still have just enough flare to break it. Is this the combination of both being used in modern work we have spoken about? Is this style one of the infamous hybrid designs that are developing all the time? A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AS DLT DESIGN
8:30am__ Wake up and shower (I feel more refreshed in the morning).
Do we have to eventually have to
accept that we may be developing the design world but never expanding and creating a new graphic design? When will the day come that we can definitely say that we are neither Modernistic or Post-modernistic?
9:15am__ Sign in. Load up where I left off plan the days work. 11:45am__ Venture out to find food and to stretch my legs. 1:00pm__ Work on pressing deadlines, aim to reach a certain target by the end of the day. 3:00pm__ Head out grab any supplies needed then head home.
For sure this is one of the best parts about graphic design, it is just so mysterious and no one can tame it. Never the less here at NGD we will never rest in trying to find you what we find to be the definition of New Graphic Design. We will find it, but the question is..When will we find it?
New Graphic Design April 2013
4:00pm__ Continue working to progress ideas and work forwards (being at home I tend to be more creative). 7:00pm__ Finish off work for the day watching TV and catching up with my flat mates. 12:00am__ Do personal experimentation to improve my skills (I tend to work better at night).
