SARDI Port Adelaide provides a balance of private and public space, converting the existing buildings to a milling museum and function rooms, while allowing the research to positively impact the community with the filtered floating swimming pool and research aquariums on display in the main atrium space.
Summary Of Form Generation
Magnetic ‘filtration’ forces in the flour milling process inspire form between large metal deposits.
Existing buildings hold potential energy and also emit ‘force’.
The waves of force are disrupted by magnetic force.
A cut is angled to allow the building to become a filter of water, sun and air.
Forces dictate circulation through the structure.
Structure acts as a filter while maintaining forces from the existing imposing brick buildings.
Aluminium caps line the walls and provide space for services, water pipes and hot air ventilation.
The green roofs are irrigated by water retained and circulated on site.
The high, double glazed ceiling windows allow light to cascade down the curvaceous walls while achieving a animated ‘rippled’ effect as the sun penetrates the thermochromic slurry.
The SARDI boat has a docking station on the west portion of the site, where an inlet for water has been created. A roller door enables the docking space to be completely open when required.
The main atrium space serves as the primary circulation through the structure while also housing two thousand 10L aquariums for marine research and testing. These are situated on the ground floor of the structure, in view but out of reach for visitors.
The large lecture theatre contained acromat seating and can hold functions or presentations with a capacity of almost 230 people. The seating and staging can be customised as required.
The large vegetated facades retain the symbolic ‘power’ or ‘force’ from the existing structures while conversely welcoming the user to approach and touch the greenery in which they are clad.
Wheelchair access at both the front and the rear of the site allow all visitors to enjoy the space and these curved ramps serve as the primary entry and exit to the structure.
A floating, filtered pool resides on the north side of the site, inviting the public to use the space for water sport and recreation on hot summer day.
River water is filtered through the SARDI building. After removing contaminants, the filtered water is returned to the river via the filtered floating pool which is made of permeable layers.
Utilizing the various piped water systems running through the walls, the restaurant windows use thermochromic slurry for shading the west-facing windows.
Animation is reflected onto the walls of the interior of the structure, as though subjects are inside a water tank - often like the subjects they study. WINTER
Evaporation & condensation falls along the underside of the titanium dioxide coated, transparent photovoltaic solar cells. The water cools the interior of the structure by removing heat from between the double-glazing. Hot air can still escape the interior space via vents in the walls which lead to the roof. Heating and cooling of floors can be achieved via the water which is run in pipes through the match-cast, post-tensioned, concrete walls of the structure.
FILTER INSIDE WALL CAVITY
Both fresh water and river water are sourced and filtered through and by the building, for the many tanks in use by marine biologists and researchers. Clean, filtered water is returned to the river via the filtered floating pool, which allows the fresh water to return to the river.
SUMMER
The green facades and green roofs are drip irrigated by a water system running through the walls and floors of the building. TANK 1 (H2O)
WINTER (Maximum light/heat penetration)
TANK 2 (H2O + thermochromic lurry)
SUMMER (Slurry darkens at set temperature, reducing light and heat gain)

India Offshore Studio
A high-density residential and urban design project on a redeveloped brownfield site near New Delhi.
The ever-increasing need for housing in populous cities has lead to the construction of high-rise soldiers: generic, uniform structures standing to attention in rows, yet in isolation of one another. Unfortunately, too often they draw attention for the wrong reasons. These separate monoliths that stretch to the sky offer little in the way of social infrastructure and they lack the ability to connect members of the community along the ground plane.
The typical ‘block’ living space has been extracted from the default high-rise form and reorganised in a similar fashion to the successful ‘Habitat 67’ building typology.
Outdoor patios, terraces, and gardens are formed without sacrificing the valuable activity found on or near the ground plane. This scheme also addresses the local social context by emphasising walkability and trade, providing a route for a skytrain to connect to the existing This scheme seeks to create a walkable, high-density community liv- metro line and university, providing adequate open public space, and ing environment while establishing individual identity for the residents, it seeks to unite both medium and high income earners through two their houses, and the site as a whole. different, yet similar building typologies.

The Bluff Lookout
A PUBLIC SHELTER & LOOKOUT ATOP ‘THE BLUFF’ (ROSETTA HEAD) IN VICTOR HARBOR Rosetta Head, commonly known as ‘The Bluff’ in Victor Harbor is a popular destination for locals and tourists, especially during whale-watching season. Southern Right Whales can be seen from from The Bluff during June-October, and due to wintery weather, a public shelter and lookout would suitably provide protection from the elements.
The design also preserves the iconic view of Victor Harbor, with the lookout positioned slightly west of the summit. While hidden from vehiclular view, the lookout stands as an obvious destination from the visitor carpark or for those on the walking trail to the top.
With options for information signs to be erected, revenue raising via fixed binoculars and photo opportunities for tourists, ‘The Bluff Once the location of a whaling station, the lookout pays homage Lookout’ respectfully integrates local history, public need and conto the history of the site in function and design inspiration. Web Development
AN INNER-CITY MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENT
‘Web Development’ was a project designed in 2012, as part of the ‘Architecture Processes’ course. The scheme revolves around the idea of ‘web’ - a metaphor highlighting the meeting of various programs found in the Hindley Street area. The aesthetic of ‘web’ was explored in the facade for the structure, which extends to the ground at various points and engulfs or creates metal street furniture for the public.
be reused on each level. At night, the expanded metal mesh emanates web-like shadows onto surrounding buildings.
The structure contains commercial programs on the double-height, ground floor, four levels of office space fronting the street, and a residential component on the quieter edge of the site. A rooftop garden is shaded by the mesh facade which extends over portions of the roof and allows for deciduous creepers to grow The expanded metal mesh facade, which partially shades windows on the mesh. Residents have a separate rooftop garden to office while allowing light to penetrate the interior, also guides rain water to staff.

Drummond Circuit
Design work and visualisation for a residential dwelling - construction completed in 2012. In 2011, I was approached to design a house to suit the needs of an expanding family. I completed the visualisation and design work alongside my formal studies before passing on the design for final documentation. Construction completed in late 2012.
Challenges and opportunities were found in the unique shape of the site and in the consistent gradient. A split-level design created a sunken lounge on the western wing, while the two wings allowed for a sheltered patio and outdoor entertaining area.
The house comprises of two ‘wings’; one for the married couple and the other for their children. The two wings are joined by a large open living area with stunning views and high, north-facing windows which allow light to softly permeate the space as it is reflected off of the raked ceiling.
Becoming more familiar with the process of residential construction and being a part of the various stages was an invaluable experience. Through frequent liaison with the clients, an ongoing dialogue was developed to achieve a livable and sustainable result.
The West: An engaging, multi-layered edge faces Churchill Road. Restaurants and shops in the style of the represented countries occupy the street frontage.
Vicissitude
AN urban design project centered on fostering a nurturing community for new immigrants. With the growing diversity among Australia’s people groups and the various languages and traditions associated, ‘Vicissitude’ identified Kilburn as an ideal place to create a community hub which blatantly celebrates and integrates new immigrants, with opportunities for affordable housing and education. Acknowledging the challenges many immigrants face upon arrival to Australia, this concept promotes equality and opportunity by creating a safe, social community with transport, recreational facilities, and community gardens to serve as the bridge between cultures.
‘Vicissitude’ builds upon an existing but ‘hidden’ identity of Kilburn, incorporating low-maintenance, medium density residential housing, with a focus on fostering ‘community’ and skill-building for new migrants and those in the low socioeconomic demographic. Vicissitude. noun. 1. a change or variation, or something different, occurring in the course of something. 2. interchange or alternation, as of states or things. 3. regular change or succession of one state or thing to another. 4. change, mutation, or mutability. (Macquarie Dictionary)
The site is split with residential and community buildings on the east, while commercial and mixed-use structures sit on the west. Symbols on the flags of represented immigrants’ countries form points of interest (eg. water fountains, kitchens, gardens, etc).
One of the few ‘green open spaces’ in the area is raised and expanded out over the roofs of the proposed surrounding structures. This increases the open green space, creates natural seating for local sports, and shields the space from traffic and noise pollution below.
A park with flat sporting areas, room for picnics and relaxation atop the roofs is achieved. Grassed mounds are sloped for drainage and seating. A safety fence for youngsters and stray sporting balls is to be installed along the top edges.
The design results in a safe, walkable community for all ages. The unique character and the multi-cultural identity of the site seeks to attract outside visitors to the commercial areas. Newcomers to the country are able to showcase their culture’s cooking at one of the various themed outdoor kitchens which sit close-by to the community gardens within the eastern portion of the site.

Many different design languages and individual identities form to become one. Various elements and styles of traditional architecture in each of the represented countries will be ‘stacked’ on top of one another and placed side-byside. This will achieve the verticality required for the medium-density goal, while also creating an experience unique to Kilburn and the surrounding suburbs.
In conjunction with the proposed method, ‘false facades’ can be created by painting cultural representations of each type of architecture on the face of economic, efficient ‘box’ shaped forms.

The LightHouse
RESIDENTIAL TOWER within a re-purposed railway site
On an aging and degenerate rail yard site, a high-density living alternative was designed and centered on three fundamental requirements: work, play and rest. ‘The Lighthouse’ sits within a village which explores the analogous relationship humans share with machines in regard to movement, transport and industry.
Comprising of a cyclindrical core which houses services and two elevators, The Lighthouse rotates 45 degrees each week so residents have an-ever changing view.
On each floor, an outdoor ‘green room’ is situated, allowing light to penetrate to the core of the structure, as well as serving as a With three distinct zones (commercial, residential and recreational), semi-outdoor space for residents. Animation
Short computer animations constructed with 3d Modelling software During my Bachelor of Design Studies, I completed the ‘Digital Media’ stream alongside the architecture pathway as I am passionate about photography and video production.
‘fly-through’ animations for some of my architecture projects, but beyond that, I have learned the importance of ‘story’ and the power of influence it holds.
I worked on creative projects including short films “Fetch!”, “The Cart”, and “Coco the Nut”. Various programs were used throughout the Digital Media pathway, such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Autodesk 3D Studio Max, Adobe Flash CS3, Adobe Photoshop and Trimble Sketch Up.
Alongside friend and colleague, Michael Nixon, I worked on “Fetch!” - a 3D animation which follows a mischievous dog who is left home alone and tempted by an ill-placed bone.
The skills I learned in this pathway assisted me in creating
I was responsible for the environment design and the public presentation of ‘Fetch!’, which included the construction of a Flash website and presentation package.
Concept Modelling
Examples of various physical models constructed via abstract process.
In 2011, during the ‘Architecture Elective Studio A’, students were By investigating literal and figurative extractions from the layers of required to derive physical form from the ideas and experience they vellum inspired by the site, plans and sections could be adjusted had encountered after a site visit to the Islington Rail Yard in Kilburn. and manipulated while still visibly related to the site in some way. The old railway site was rich in texture and history, and it provided inspiration through evocative materials and forms on site. Using layers information, sketches, notes and photographs, I constructed various physical models via this abstract process of form creation.
Applying simple movement or bending related to the train tracks and mechanics on the site. Various materials translated into solidity, permeability or fractures. Exposing the core of models represented the eroding existing buildings around the Islington Rail Yard.
