Exercise 01

Exercise 001 | Knot This exercise will be a short mini exercise that will expose you to some basic fundamental concepts for modeling with points and curves. This will help refresh your skills for operating in digital space and the content that you were exposed to in Digital Media 1. Method | In this exercise you will select 1 knot from the series of knots located on the blog (You may not use the example shown in class). You will then proceed to modeling the knot 3 dimensionally, constructing it first in 2 dimensions through methods of point and curve editing. This is a quick exercise and will be due at the beginning of the next class. Process | + Place the photo of your knot in rhino’s top view. (Use the Picture Frame command) + Next you will need to break down the movements of the knot and understand how it is tied. This may require you to find other images or information about that particular knot. +Once you understand how the knot is tied you will create a sequence of points which mimic the movements of the knot being tied. +Select the polyline command and simply connect the dots. Your result will be a planar curve. (flat curve) + Next you will turn the curves control points on and begin to tie the 2-3 curves together. This will require you to work in plan, section and perspective in order to weave the strands together. + Once you feel confident you have tied the knot then you will need to rebuild the knot maintaining the same number of control points but changing the degree of the curve from 1 to 3. + The last part of the process will require you to turn your curves into 3 Dimensional strands by piping the curves. Be cautious not to make the diameter to large. + Be sure that you make a duplicate of each step of the process so that you can document through drawings each step that was required for you to execute the exercise. You may use plan, elevation, and perspective drawings. Simple Make 2D drawings exported to Illustrator will be sufficient for this exercise.

Exercise 01

Printing + Layout | Print your drawing with proper line weights on an 8.5 x 11 high quality print. Use the layout techniques that you have learned to produce a simple yet clear layout. This is a quick exercise and will be due at the beginning of the next class. Extra | You are encouraged to experiment here. Try to test and develop your skills by showing iterations of the knot being tight and loose again. This will take some skills to achieve.
