bio/letter

I am currently a fourth-year undergraduate student at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo where I am pursuing a Bachelor of Architecture degree and minoring in Sustainable Environments. While here, I have developed skills and talents in hand drafting, sketching, modeling, and many digital tools. I am fluent in AutoCAD, Revit Architecture, Sketchup Pro, Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Autodesk Vasari, and many others inlcuding advance rendering plugin experitsise through Sketchup and VRAY. I have a great knowledge in materials and construction methods as well as hands-on experience. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to work with my Dad in his architecture office, dealing with clients, visiting job sites, and contributing in design and production works. I have also gained an incredible amount of architecture experience while working at firms such as HOK in San Francisco and Gensler in Los Angeles. Recently at Cal Poly, I enrolled in an architecture design studio class and was given the project of designing a 25,000+ sf Youth Arts Academy consisting of Art, Music, Dance, and Theater departments. This project was unique in that we had an actual client working with us on our designs. At the end of the quarter, through a panel jury, our client chose my project as “the most outstanding design and concept“. As quoted by Clifford Clark “In fact, awarding your design 1st place was a unanimous decision of all the judges who will eventually be teaching in some capacity at our academy.“ I believe my self-motivation, eagerness to learn and generate feedback from faculty and peers has set me apart from the other students. Currently this project has completed the schematic design phase, and fundraising is in progress to supply the cost for this project to be built. I am very motivated to learn more about design and architecture and its application outside of my education, which is why I’m writing to you today. I would love an opportunity to intern with your office to gain an inside perspective as well as valuable trade knowledge from you and your peers. I would like to thank you in advance for your time and consideration when reviewing my attached resume and portfolio and I look forward to the opportunity of speaking with you soon. If you are not currently seeking any interns, I would still love the chance to speak with you during an informational interview and hopefully learn about your unique perspective on architecture design. Also, I would be happy to address any further questions or queries you might have.

Affordable Housing: Hayes

Valley

located in San Francisco in the Hayes Valley, this 85 unit affordable housing complex integrates the surrounding vibrant and revitalized neighborhood with an open site and building to encourage social interaction. In coordination with the Mayors Office of Housing in San Francisco to perform a feasibility study to see what sort of affordable housing could be built on the Parcel O site in the Hayes Valley of San Francisco. Historically, this site has been used for the offramp for the 101 freeway. After the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989, the freeway closed down and it has been vacant since then. Recently, the site has been used for an urban organic farm. Conceptually, the design takes its roots in the former freeway and the idea to incorporate as much public access and open space. This design contains high space efficiency with 85 one bedroom, two bedroom, and three bedroom units, computer lounges, an office lobby, a large multipurpose room, and parking for 40 cars. The building also contains 50% open space to create a very bright liveable community. The main design gesture was to use the former freeway path to slice the building in two halves all while being connected through a series of bridges emphasizing social interaction. The freeway was vital for the growth of the Hayes Valley, and its memory should live on in built form. The site program also includes the Living Alley concept for the extension of Hickory Street between Octavia Boulevard and Laguna Street. To create an icon in the Hayes Valley, the exterior is expressed in a very contemporary manner with bright colors to attract residents and create an exciting piece of architecture in the neighborhood.

N Street Lofts: A Social Re-Emergence

In the midst of many designing factors including site, climate, program, zoning, history, and regulations, the N Street Lofts emerge. To create a facility that is both environmentally sustainable and yet innovative, creative, and dynamic, this structure boasts a strong conceptual idea along with the practical performance factors . The N Street Lofts materialize out of this collision of parts. This housing complex sets the stage for the future, both in its non-traditional approach of community but also in its inhabitants. These lofts are apart of a cohousing community meaning that every resident has their own living quarters, or a small 1200 sf apartment, but come together and socially share in the activities of fitness, leisure, cooking, and many others. The tower emerges from the site forces and twists to respond to both the past and future of the residents. By opening up both cor ners of the structure, the hope is that not only do the recently retired adults benefit from the city, but that the city of Merced can benefit from the baby boomers. The undulating perforated metal skin cladding of the lofts acts as both a solar shading device but also a strong component in the building. It displays the lives of the users in the way they control the openness or transparency of their units and at night, glows showing off the facility and the lives of the retirees. Sustainability wise, the N Street Lofts is orientated to capture the prevailing winds and to use those to passively cool the units and spaces. The combination of passively ventilated rooms, solar shading devices along the south and east facades, thermal mass, high efficient photovoltaic panels, and cool green roofs, creates a zero net facility that is both beautiful to the environment but also to the community of Merced. The final design achieved a -51 for zero net energy.

After researching the surrounding areas of Merced, it became clear that this unique site is perfect for the transition between work and retirement. 3 main ideas, TRANSIT, CITY, RESIDENCE transform the site into this emerging force for the city of Merced and the recently retired baby boomer adults. The three smaller images to the right show, one the building massing and density of the area, two the main transportation routes, cars in yellow, bikes ANALOG ITERATIONS in green, and trains in blue. The final graphic portrays the zoning of this site with commercial in the south and residential and civic towards the north.

Youth Arts Academy

is a community center slash school for children ages fourteen to twenty to discover theater, dance, music and art at a fun and prestigious place. The architectural spaces of dance and music cantilever out to incorporate contextual ideas as well and creating a dramatic and dynamic exterior. This new 23,000 square foot academy is located in Grover Beach Califor nia. Grover Beach is a small beach community located on the central coast of Califor nia,15 miles south of San Luis Obispo. It is positioned on a small site 100’ x 117’ and neighbors a church, a children’s exploratorium, a public library, and a public park. The concept of this building is interaction and intersection of the arts and media. The program consists of a theater plus backstage and seating, a dance studio, an art studio, a music studio with small lear ning spaces, a classroom, and student lounge/study spaces. The form of the building was reflected off of my initial concept models and site analysis models where the four spaces (Theater, Dance, Art, and Music) are all connecting/intersection through a shared space/circulation space. The two studios on the front south facing facades are the Dance (yellow) and Music (Orange). The colors of the building suggest playful interactions, a friendly and fun lear ning environment, and an icon for Grover beach. This project was chosen first place and is currently in the process to get built. In the second phase of the project, I spent alot of time dealing with the client, discussing changes, materiality, costs, and city restrictions. Concept

youth arts academy

My initial concept on day one of architecture studio was the interaction and intersection of students and the arts alike.

1

My second conceptual model played of the concpets earlier but it focused more on the ideas of the influence of the school.

2

This conceptual model looked at the context of the site and its influences of surrounding schools, academys, and music, dance, and art institutions.

3

Like the previous conceptual context model, this piece looked at how the surrounding contextural elements reacted to the site.

4

This model showed the seperate spaces and how they interacted and intersect as well as with its contextural influences.

5

Like previous, this one began to express more of the forms as well as the interior expressions of the concepts of interaction

San Luis Obispo Center for Art and Design

is a local art and design school adjacent to the Cal Poly campus which would serve as a new campus for the Art and Design department at Cal Poly. 1507 Slack Street is the new location of the San Luis Obispo Center for Art and Design. This new 11,058 square foot facility contributes to lear ning, practice, and the living of art and design in an alter native and innovative experience. This project is located directly adjacent to the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo campus on Slack St. This building strives to become zero net energy and encourage the students to lear n about sustainability and efficient techniques in building design. Separated in two zones, this center has public and private portions. The public spaces contain circulation, galleries, cafe, and restrooms, while the private spaces available only to the students, administration and faculty contain,4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, one common area complete with a kitchen and living areas, and four unique and alter native studios. Each studio is designed specifically for a different art; dance, graphic design, fine art, and architecture. each space is open to the north to capture the views towards Cal Poly San Luis Obispo campus and the surrounding hills and to achieve lighting with no direct sunlight. The site is San Luis Obispo, Ca and there are strong southwester n winds in the spring through summer months. In response to this factor I created a air space in the 2nd floor to use displacement ventilation and floor plenums to ventilate the building in the summer and hot seasons. Solarly, I designed the building to shade itself and with the majority of the glazing surfaces facing north to eliminate glare and solar heat gain. The building also contain a series of Green roofs to eliminate the carbon footprint, to provide shade, remove heat, act as an insulator, and reduce air pollution.

Science Center San Luis Obispo

is a local science museum to serve San Luis Obispo as well as the central coast to discover and lear n about technological innovations, the solar system, and our beautiful planet. San Luis Obispo is the perfect and much needed location of a brand new Science Center that is able to serve both the central coast and hopefully become the premier Science Museum in Califor nia. In San Luis Obispo the nearest Science Museum is currently 150 miles away in Fresno and then followed by San Jose 185 miles, and Los Angeles 200 miles. All decent science museum are not within 3.5 hours. Designed and influenced from the site, the building shifts on the axis from the local landmark bubble gum alley and the cor ner of Marsh st. and Broad st. The two spikes at the end of the museum serve as dynamic circulation columns. Programmatically, this museum contains a series of Galleries and exhibits on every floor, museum store, restaurant, and a planetarium. This project incorporated the idea of chiseling out and creating voids in 1/3 of a box to create a building. This created unique spaces, courtyards, and outdoor areas. This quarter long project was a very challenging and a tur ning point in my architectural education. This project was selected to be displayed in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design main office and received a grade of A+.

We focused on documenting and synthesizing the capacity of Los Angeles’ infrastructure and how the limits of each system may physically impact the future built form of Los Angeles. Once these variables, which include building information and zoning, energy, waste management, and water were universally known and their units of measure understood, scenarios for the future were presented.

rates of use (ten thousands)

As with any city, Los Angeles’ infrastructure exists as both physical and operational systems. Many of these systems remain an enigma, unimaginable and seldom envisioned at their maximum capacity, while others, such as Los Angeles notorious automotive thoroughfares are easily imagined, if not an everyday reality for many Angelenos.

Downtown Los Angeles; bound by the highways 101,110, 10 and the LA river, contain six primary consumer types. These 6 building types make up the majority of DTLA consumtion in square footage, population, water usage, electricity, natural gas, and waste.
