ERICA SECCOMBE ‘GROW’ 08.05. – 31.05.2014
This exhibition draws together several bodies of work resulting from Erica Seccombe’s experimental research project into 3D Microcomputed X-ray tomography at the ANU Department of Applied Mathematics. These works are a study of three-dimensional (volumetric) virtual data of living systems.
‘[Beautiful] Monster’ reveals the exquisite architecture of a common garden slater and ‘GROW’explores an additional fourth dimension the moment seeds sprout into life. The installation of 3D printed objects, ‘Collective Unconscious’ and ‘Time Captured’, furthers this investigation of virtual data through 3D printing. The combination of 3D stereoscopic projection and 3D printed objects provides the viewer with a unique, immersive experience of observing microscopic organisms through computational magnification.
More than an illusionary spectacle, Erica sees this work as an aletheiagoria, a term created by the writer Caspar Henderson to describe how knowledge and truth reveals a greater reality of life around us. These works celebrate the power of scientific vision and technology, but they also allow us to contemplate and reflect on being in the world through a moment of wonder.
