Hubert Scheibl is one of the most important and significant representatives of abstract-sensitive, gesture-intense painting. DOMINIK MERSCH GALLERY is very proud to announce ‘Riffs of Real Time’, his first solo exhibition in Australia. Scheibl’s work both on paper and canvas is difficult to categorize. Sublime, fathomless, overwhelming, and sensual are some of the adjectives used to describe his practice. The lush, sensuous and nervous elements of the artist’s paper works reveal the speed and immediacy of their graphical gesture. The timeless aspect of Hubert Scheibl’s paintings derives from his remarkable skill of capturing the inner light behind the picture plane, which creates a sense of deep space; it is here that the viewer is drawn unwittingly into a matrix of gesture and color. Scheibl provides this sense of emotional free fall as the painting defines its own sense of time and place. This exhibition offers a fantastic overview of Scheibl’s oeuvre with paintings and works on paper from the past twelve years. Hubert Scheibl has been exhibiting extensively worldwide, e.g. at the Venice Biennale, the Bienal Internacional de São Paulo, as well as in Paris, Munich, Vienna, Helsinki and Barcelona, among other cities.
