JENNY IHN A GLIMPSE: I Saw Another World, More Material Than Ours JENNY IHN
20.11. – 17.12.2014
ARTIST STATEMENT “A few years ago, I found myself praying in and through my art practice. Soon afterwards I came to realize that I was experiencing God in a way that I had not expected. I started to sense responses to prayers that I had prayed: sometimes through the intuitive pulses which drives my art practice; sometimes through the materiality of the mediums I use; sometimes by being reminded of words in scripture; and sometimes through deep and clear convictions—all, in and through the process of art-making. I have come to believe that receiving God in this particular way is something that I can experience and seek, in the here and now, even through what is mundane and thoroughly ordinary, such as the materiality of the art-making process. All of this was a new way of being for me: I am used to compartmentalising the material and spiritual strands of the lived-world as mutually exclusive categories, as opposed to seeing them as aspects of the lived-world which profoundly interpenetrate each other—whereby the other exists through the other, as a seamless whole. Earlier on in the year, I came across something that Karl Rahner, a German theologian, says of my God. This claim of Rahner’s has been quite formative for this particular body of work in its exploration of the interpenetration between the ordinary and the sacred. Rahner, in meditating on a passage in scripture, says of God that He is a God who visits and celebrates a wedding in Cana because He can’t help but join in with human beings in celebrating that which is human, that He is a God who quietly and unobtrusively turns water into wine at a wedding so that even a miracle of God will not disturb human festivities. And, as Rahner suggests in his writings, this current body of work is an attempt on my part to be mindful of the profound and dynamic interrelation between what is material and spiritual, between what is seen and unseen in our world—as a whole.” Jenny Ihn, 2014
