KEI TAKEMURA
"Hana no Iro" 09.04 – 02.05.2015
"Hana no Iro" Â The meaning of the title is "Color of Flower", taken from ancient poetry by Ono no Komachi, born in 825 AD. The rest of the verse translates as follows: Â "The flower colors wilted and faded away while I meaninglessly existed in this world as the long lasting rain continued"
Kei Takemura is a Japanese born artist who lives and works in Berlin. Our Director Dominik first met the artist during the 2006 Biennale of Sydney when Takemura exhibited a major installation piece and performance at the Art Gallery New South Wales. By an interesting turn of fate, when planning last year’s instrumental cross-continental gallery swap Dominik discovered that the Berlin gallery represented her. Dominik visited Takemura’s Berlin studio and fell in love with her practice and invited her to show in Sydney. Takemura uses embroidery as a channel for recalling her memories of the past. She is fascinated by combining layers of tapestry and the silk-embroidery for her installation works. Her densely personal and emotive worked expresses selfconscious visions of her surrounding environment. Reflecting on the correlation between a viewpoint and an environment, the artist evokes universal memories through her personal reminiscence. Attempting to deliver her memory through the creative act, Takemura transforms feelings of intimacy to an objective invention through an act of stitching. And so, in a delightful and satisfactory continuum from the ‘Sydney – Berlin Gallery’ swap executed in 2014, Dominik Mersch Gallery is pleased to present Kei Takemura’s first Australian solo exhibition ‘Hano no Iro’ in which Takemura endeavours to express the fragility and beauty of this world.
