OPEN. HERE.
OPEN. Open. When people are open, they are receptive to new ideas, honest in their dealings and candid in their comments. When a place is open, it can be expansive, accessible, and ready to meet other’s needs. When a mind is open, it is limitless in its possibilities. Our libraries serve as the community’s can opener. We are pulling off tops and filling up people, places and minds with words, skills and smarts. We are altering people’s perspectives on how they see the world and providing them with the tools to go out and affect change. We are molding the places we go to, leaving behind empowerment and knowledge. We too, are changed. Opened by our work, we are forever transformed by the people we encounter and the service we provide.
HERE ARE OUR STORIES.
The best part of working in a library for me is the chance to make a real difference for individual people right now, today. It doesn’t take eight semesters and a boatload of money to explore your passion. It doesn’t take six phone calls and eight transfers to get your question answered. It doesn’t take a stop at the bookstore, movie rental place and the bank to get ready for the weekend. Just the library. It really is smart. Very smart.
BOARD OF LIBRARY COMMISSIONERS 2007 Gayle Schaub, President James Botts, Vice President/Secretary Anne Armstrong Cusack LaVerne Blickley Nancy Douglas Ruth Lumpkins Carl Meyering
In the long run we also change the culture, protect individual free speech rights, freedom of the press and intellectual freedom. So what idealistic young person wouldn’t want to spend their life dedicated to libraries? We have a long track record and have proven our value to American intellectual life (is that an oxymoron?) time and again. I have seen a person change their mind and their life with only one book or article. We change lives every day. It changes me every day. Urban, smart, open, easy. Outstanding.
Marcia A. Warner Director
Sophia Ward Brewer really knows the skinny on Lean. “When we leaned Technical Services, we changed the time it took to process a book from 6-8 weeks to 10 days. We also implemented a reclassification system to make it easier for a patron to find materials.” The Lean process is a way to analyze workflows, eliminate unnecessary steps, and cut waste in time and money. The Library has undertaken five Lean processes in the last two years, and Sophia, who was the process leader for the one in Technical Services, now presents on the Lean process to groups around the state. “I originally started working in the Library because I thought it would be a good place for me to work and not really be noticed or hide,” Sophia reflected. “I now realize that God brought me to Grand Rapids and to this library, not really to hide me, but to give me the room, resources, and relationships that I need to grow.” Having worked at both the Main Library and in the branches, she has seen first hand how libraries transform lives. “When I worked at the Madison Square Branch Library, there was a young man who came in and wanted to know if we had any Donald Goines books,” recalled Sophia. “I showed him the books and he checked out a couple of them. Once he had read all the Goines books, he asked for similar gritty street novels. I suggested a biography I had just read, Makes me wanna holler: a Young Black Man in America by Nathan McCall. He reluctantly checked it out and came back and told me that he really enjoyed it. After reading all of the McCall books, he started reading other biographies.” “This is a fond memory for me because I believe that I was instrumental in fostering literacy and reading growth in this patron. I am sure that all of the staff who work with patrons at Grand Rapids Public Library can attest that this scenario happens and is one that makes it all worth it.”

TIM Tim Sage, West Side Branch Manager
Tim Sage was never going to be a librarian. While he was earning his bachelor’s degree in Biology, his boss kept encouraging him to get his master’s degree in Library Science. “I kept telling her, ‘No way. I’m going to do something more interesting.’ But somehow, whenever it was time to get a new job, I always ended up getting one with the Grand Rapids Public Library.”
2007 ANNUAL REPORT
As the manager of the Library’s first branch, uninteresting is not a word that gets thrown around very much these days. “We had a patron request a book that she had read ten years ago,” Tim recounted, “The copy that was put on hold for her came out of book storage at the Main Library. While reading the book, she discovered a letter that her daughter had written to her the first time she had checked out the book. The letter had stayed hidden all of those years – amazing.” In addition to working at the branch, Tim is also the chair of the Hispanic Heritage Committee, which puts on fun family events like Salsa Saturday and Día de los Libros. The programs, which are funded by the Ryerson Library Foundation, highlight both the Library’s resources and Hispanic culture in Grand Rapids. “Putting on an event like Salsa Saturday that really engages many different segments of the community is rewarding,” Tim commented. And popular. Events sponsored by the Hispanic Heritage Committee have grown in attendance by 27% in the last year. A life-long West Sider, Tim is also a life-long library user. “My earliest childhood memory is of being in the old Main Library children’s room and going through the spin racks trying to find the Choose Your Own Adventure books that I had not found all the endings to already. I also remember wondering how the security gates ‘knew’ when a book you had was checked out or not.” For someone who has spent 13 years working in libraries, that’s probably not such a mystery anymore.
REBECCA
Rebecca Near, Reference Librarian
How many people can say that their job includes developing wikis, creating historical exhibits, helping a man find a Venezuelan phone number, researching copyright information for a new board game and recommending Scandinavian mysteries? As a new reference librarian, Rebecca Near does all of this and more. “I started working at the Library out of sheer curiosity while pursuing other career options,” said the dual MFA and MLS recipient. “To my surprise, I found the public library to be a great intersection between the educational, social, civic and cultural communities of the city. I can’t think of another institution with such a wide reach.” Rebecca is truly someone with one foot in the past and one in the future. Her skilled work on many library exhibits can be seen on the fourth level of the Main Library with The Changing Faces of Monroe Avenue display and the upcoming A Place to Hang Your Hat exhibit, both of which are drawn from the extensive Library archives. At the same time, she is one of the first staff members to develop wikis for the Library’s website. These collaborative web pages and research guides are making it easier for patrons to browse Library collections and discover new resources.
2007 ANNUAL REPORT
“One change in libraries, which I think is actually not as earth shattering as sometimes proclaimed, is the prevalence of new and multiple formats. Though this shift in content requires flexibility in learning the mechanisms of new technologies as they emerge, the underlying goal remains the same: To provide exceptional service and kick-ass collections that respond to the real interests of patrons.
My passion for raising funds for the Library stems from the fact that libraries are the greatest equalizer. They offer free access to library materials, resources and the Internet to all people, regardless of income, race or geographic location. They instill knowledge. And knowledge is freedom.
RYERSON LIBRARY FOUNDATION BOARD OF TRUSTEES 2007 William Fehsenfeld, Chair Dirk Hoffius, Vice Chair Marjorie H. Kindel, Secretary Carla A. Grant, Treasurer
The Library expands people’s minds in part through its programming. Celebration of the Book, the Vander Veen Center for the Book lecture series, children’s programming, adult reading programs, and the cultural heritage celebrations such as Taste of Soul Sunday and Día de los Libros, all grow the fabric of our community and bring new audiences to the Library. The Ryerson Library Foundation provides funds to make these opportunities possible – to open the world for the citizens of Grand Rapids.

“It was probably sometime in the ‘80s when there was a big push by orange growers in a campaign for orange juice. The tag line was, ‘Not just for breakfast anymore.’ I think libraries should adopt the slogan, ‘Not just for books anymore.’ “We seem to have so many patrons who are frequent visitors but never check out an item, or only check out media, or just attend our programs, or simply stop by to use our wireless Internet connections, or never set foot in a building but use our online resources… “I think the biggest change is how the Library is so many different things to so many different people.” Margaret E. “I think that the library has to evolve to survive. And that is what it’s doing. My friends and classmates come to the library for research and entertainment. In my circle, the library has a reputation for being a good place to be exposed to new things. I think if the library has the attention of the twenty-somethings, it’s definitely making changes that keep the library relevant and useful.”

“After the writing and approval of a Ryerson Foundation grant this past year, an original wall mural by artist Carol Roeda was installed in the children’s area of the Seymour Branch Library. The mural, entitled Reading Takes You Everywhere, was such a fun and imaginative project to see through to completion. The mural has brought many positive comments and smiles to our patrons. Come see it!”

“A Hispanic family came into the Madison Square Branch Library asking how to get a library card. I explained to the mother

the procedure for getting cards for her and her family. As I explained the policy and fines to the family, they were extremely shocked and amazed that everything was free! The mother told me that in her home country one had to pay to be a member and that the library was typically only used by college students and upper class families. The family was so excited about being able to use the library.

“The Library is a neutral organization that provides free access to the ideas and culture that enrich and advance civilization. What’s not important about that? But also, in a world of consumers where everything has a price, it’s cool that we still seem to agree as a society that libraries are good and necessary, and that it’s not all serious goodcitizenry, but also a refuge for popular culture that everyone can access.”
JASON Jason Hendrix, Technical Services Clerical Aide
“My mother used to take me to storytime at the West Side Library. I loved going to storytime. But when I went to kindergarten, I was told that I was too old for storytime. The trade-off was supposed to be that in kindergarten I would learn to print my name and as soon as I could print my name, I could get my own library card. So I got one fast, only to find out that kids were limited to six books on their card. Adults had limits of 25. So I took my mother’s card (unbeknownst to her) and my wagon and went to West Side to load up. I checked out 25 books, took them all home and asked my mom to read them all to me. She phoned the library instead and spoke to Ms. Bird and Ms. Idema and tipped them off to my scheme. I was restricted to use my own library card after that.”

“I was so excited when I heard that the Library was bringing in author Eric Jerome Dickey for Celebration of the Book. I helped the committee get the word out about Eric’s visit and the event was packed. I think that everyone who was at the lecture waited in line afterwards to meet him. Celebration of the Book is a great event, and Eric’s talk was definitely the highlight of the day.”

2007 ANNUAL REPORT
“I feel that I have fulfilled the Library’s function of expanding people’s minds in my work with children. I have been a storyteller for twenty-five years here at the Library and throughout the City of Grand Rapids. By bringing stories to life and sharing with small children you begin to open them up to different places and cultures they may never visit in a lifetime. My thing is you can go anywhere you want in a book. I have seen this happen many times while I have worked here. Every time I prepare for a storytime, my mind is expanded or opened.”
