The Commissioner of Education, Charlene M. Russell-Tucker and Governor Ned Lamont presented Superintendent Joseph DiBacco and Ansonia High School Principal Paul Giansanti with the Commissioner’s Award for being the school that showed the highest FAFSA completion amongst similarly sized schools. According to the commissioner, Ansonia’s FAFSA completion rate increased by 14 percentage points from 51% in 2020-21 to 65.5% on 2021-22

The FAFSA challenge helps students complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). By completing the FAFSA, students access critical resources to pursue their post-secondary goals. “The FAFSA Challenge is making a big difference in the lives of thousands of deserving and talented Connecticut students,” said Governor Ned Lamont. “We are thrilled to see how innovative, collaborative, and results-driven partnerships can

generate such a wonderful return on investments and life-changing opportunities for our students, families, and school communities.”

Erin Corso, Lead School Counselor at Ansonia High School, says that “the class of 2022 was great and our staff is incredibly dedicated to our students. Every single teacher and staff member in our building would bend over backwards for a student who needs help either completing the FAFSA or revising an essay.”

Commissioner Russell-Tucker explains that “the CSDE runs the FAFSA Challenge because we want all students to know that college and/or technical school is an option for them, and that tuition need not be a barrier to attendance. While not every student needs a postsecondary education to find professional fulfillment and success, too many students rule it out entirely because of concerns around affordability. That’s what this work aims to change – to broaden students’ imaginations for what is possible for them after they leave our schools, regardless of their intention at the beginning of their senior year.”

In addition to the recognition, the CSDE is granting Ansonia High School a $5,000 prize, which will be used to incentivize the class of 2023. Corso says that the prize will be used to raffle off Prom Tickets, iPads, and even a Scholarship to students that complete the FAFSA. “We are so proud of our staff, the students, and their parents for taking the time to fill out the FAFSA application and raising the bar for all schools in Connecticut,” Superintendent DiBacco said at the award ceremony. “We are Ansonia Strong! This is a powerful reminder and an amazing opportunity for our students in Ansonia!”
