Dear DMS Members, So, what is the difference between a DCS and a SCADA? This has been something that has been asked for many years and will perhaps be more relevant to today’s systems than before. Before I suggest a reason for this let’s try to describe the difference between the two. Each consists of a network capable of supervisory control and data acquisition but in the early days the DCS, consisting of distributed process controllers, was used for continuous or PID control whilst the SCADA, consisting of a network of PLCs, was used for logical or Boolean control, but, as time progressed, so did the control applications and for some time now they are both capable of running any kind of process. Today, they even both use controllers and I/O modules that can be the same shape and format. Little difference then. However, there is still a difference essentially due to why the the original systems were created with their respective architectures. DCS required more redundancy and process unit segregation but also less graphic update latency in most cases and so the dynamic points sourced their data directly from the controller whilst the server was the main source of data in a SCADA. This then is the main differentiator but in the networks of today where bandwidth (network and processor) and processor power are such that the complete plant can be controlled from a single processor, is it time to smooth over the difference between the two? Through their collaboration with Rockwell’s Allen-Bradley, Honeywell were the first DCS to consider this with the Experion PKS being a hybrid DCS (Distributed System Architecture in Honeywell speak) using a SCADA network concept where dynamic data points are accessed from the servers and hence the virtual server can be easily considered in their case. This allows replacement of some of the more processor intensive control strategies to be carried out in the server rather than controller with the server mimicking the controller just as Esscor developed with their FSim solutions used for training and control strategy development. This concept doesn’t have to stop there and I see a time (soon I believe) when we revert to single-loop controller concepts for control segregation with one small difference. Virtual servers with edge computing will allow the processor to carry out this function in the field devices themselves as has been the case with Foundation Fieldbus (although underused for various reasons not to do with criticality) and just as the autonomic nervous system does. This will allow the control system to reduce its footprint and allow greater use of standard computing and networking processors running process control applications and, with the advances in OT system cyber-security features, there will be greater use of open and unified architectures (OPC UA) and control and graphic applications (Wonderware). Standardisation rather than customisation. Kind Regards, Mohammed Loch President and CEO, DMS Global Director Market Development Middle East & Asia Pacific - ISA

Civil Works Nearing Completion on the Duqm Integrated Power and Water Project Strategically located within the Duqm Special Economic Zone Authority (SEZAD), the Duqm Integrated Power and Water Project (DIPWP) involves the development of a 326 MW combined-cycle power plant and a seawater desalination plant with a capacity of 36,000 cubic meters per day. Once completed, the plant will provide power and water treatment exclusively to Duqm Refinery and Petrochemical Industries, both of which are currently under development. As a BOO (Build-Own-Operate) project, DIPWP is being developed by Duqm Power Company (DPC), a special vehicle company formed by Oman Oil Company (OOC) and Gulf Energy Development PCL (Gulf ). Al-Ghanim Cobra Tadagua Sojitz LLC, a consortium of Al-Ghanim International Kuwait, Cobra Group, Tadagua, and Sojitz, is involved in the project as the main EPC contractor. Though the consortium received a Letter of Intent (LoI) for the contract in mid-2018, the LSTK-EPC contract has not been signed until September 2019.

Siemens has bagged an order worth $228.3 million from DPC to supply five SGT-800 industrial gas turbines, five SST-300 industrial steam turbines, and the associated automation and control systems for the combined gas and steam turbine power plant. Siemens will also carry out the maintenance of the turbines for a period of 25 years. Other facilities within the project include marine intake structure, pumping station, seawater supply system, return channels and beach well system. A sub-contract for the detailed engineering has been awarded to Larsen & Toubro by Al-Ghanim Cobra Tadagua Sojitz, while Petrojet has been subcontracted to carry out the civil works for all the packages. With the civil works nearing completion, an initial operation of the plant is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2020. All the units are scheduled to be fully commissioned by the end of 2022.

Liwa Plastics Industries Complex On Stream OQ’s Liwa Plastics Industries Complex located in Sohar, is set for start-up in Q1-2020 to add 1.4 million tonnes per year (Mtpa) to the Sultanate’s plastic production. The new plastic complex is built downstream of the Sohar Refinery, also owned by OQ. The heart of the complex comprises the steam cracker, the polyethylene and polypropylene plants. An upstream gas extraction plant located at Fahud Refinery is being developed as part of the project along with a midstream 280-kilometer gas export pipeline stretching from Fahud to the complex. The official award of the EPC contracts for all the 4 packages of the project took place on 16 December 2015. Tecnimont, the contractor of EPC-2, received a Notice-to-Proceed in May 2016, Tecnimont’s scope includes 2 Polyethylene Plants with a total capacity of 80,000 t/y, high density polyethylene (HDPE) and linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), 1 polypropylene plant with a capacity of 300,000 t/y, PE reactors, PP loop reactor structure, utility pipe rack, purification unit, extruders substation, PE extrusion building, offsite and utilities and 90,000 sqm product warehouse. In June 2019, the company announced that the overall advancement of the project was standing at 94.5%, with

the construction and procurement were fully complete. Assisted Tecnimont in the successful completion of the project was a group of local and international firms including Special Technical Service (STS) that provided the electrical and instrumentation works, Honeywell Process Solutions, Rockwell Group and Yokogawa as the control system solutions providers, and Bahwan Engineering Company as the main power equipment sub-contractor. The suppliers also include, Inco Group as the structural steel supplier, AEG Power Solutions as the complete power solution supplier, Baker Hughes as the monitoring system supplier and Nuova ASP that was contracted to supply a series of lighting fixtures. The entire complex is expected to become fully operational before mid 2020, and once reaches full operational capacity, the complex will reinforce OQ as a significant player in the international petrochemicals marketplace.

INSIGHT! FEATURE

Interview With Husam Abdullah Ahmed al Jahdhami Engineering Function Director Petroleum Development Oman (PDO)

What is PDO’s vision for Digital Transformation? Digital is a key enabler to meet PDO’s strategic objectives and is an area that we are committed to grow and develop to benefit from the myriad of opportunities that exist to enhance production optimisation and risk mitigation in our Company. What is PDO’s internal approach in Digital transformation in relation to vendor engagement? PDO will exploit a Digital Ecosystem of suppliers and partners to ensure diversity in experience and perspective as well as ensure In-Country Value plays a significant role. We are confident that this approach will allow us to benefit from deploying the best in-class technology and latest developments while at the same time helping to support local businesses and to expand expertise here in the Sultanate. Can you share with us success stories where PDO has realized benefits from the Digital Trans formation journey? There are many good examples across PDO. For example the Company has already developed first-ofits kind solutions in Seismic Acquisitions and first-inregion solutions in Digital Drilling through complex Machine Learning algorithms in Image Recognition

and Natural Language Processing. and Digitalisation reduces costs, saves many months of staff time and reduces safety exposure. The benefits are clear and we have only just begun! How do you see professional societies such as ISA impacting your technical resources? Professional societies help provide a wealth of knowledge and experience sharing opportunities and, with Digital, there is so still so much more to learn. We expect ISA and similar bodies will continue to instill professional excellence through education, information sharing and facilitating industry discussion. What are the most common skill, roles, and resources gaps you discovered when undertaking digital transformation? The most common skill gaps that we have identified are in staff with experience in deep data science topics, data pipeline engineering, novel solution software engineering, novel solution IT architecture, and successful agile coaching and delivery. It should be noted that these skills are in short supply around the world, although, that is changing…and we will rectify this imbalance here too. Automation

DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION

Key Technology Trends to Follow for 2020 Industrial end users today are demonstrating an improved grasp on how disruptive technologies and approaches can be implemented effectively in their operations and across their enterprises to gain business value. This is critical for any organization to not only survive, but to thrive long-term in a world where the only certainty is change.

pervasive infrastructure. Moving forward, Industrial IoT Edge 2.0 offerings will place greater emphasis on turnkey solutions that address specific outcomeoriented use cases. This represents a shift away from a simple “run the operations” mentality to use of real-time data analytics to rethink competitive fundamentals.

The new technologies and approaches that ARC Advisory Group analysts are tracking are all poised to either enter the mainstream or – if already there - to continue to gain acceptance. All relate to the overall digital transformation of industry, infrastructure, and today’s increasingly smart cities and municipalities. While far from a complete list, the technologies discussed in this report will almost certainly make an impact on industry, infrastructure, and municipalities in 2020.

Increasing Use of Cyber-physical Systems

Deploying Industrial IoT Edge 2.0 Solutions The edge of industrial internet-enabled architectures is becoming increasingly important. This is due largely to its often-critical role in determining the success of digital transformation strategies. Initially focused on delivering timely, clean data to cloudbased applications, the edge is emerging as an entirely new ecosystem within the overall enterprise architecture. Solution architects now rely on the edge not only for cloud integration, but also as a solution to address manufacturers’ concerns about latency, security, cost containment, and isolation for production

Industrial IoT Edge Solutions Emphasize Self-service and Ease of Use

environments. Edge computing applications, particularly high-value analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) delivered via machine learning (ML), allow data to be processed near its source. The spike of investments targeted at this space helps demonstrate its increasing importance. IT and OT suppliers alike are introducing new Industrial IoT edge hardware, software, and solution offerings. ARC now refers to this as “Industrial IoT Edge 2.0.” It offers important improvements in ease-of-use, self-service, and turnkey operation; while emphasizing business outcomes and application-specific solutions versus

While manufacturers ramp up to meet demand for the

growing “smart product” market, they face challenges developing and manufacturing new and more complex products and systems. These require tight integration between the computational (virtual) and the physical (continuous) worlds. To meet these complexity and integration requirements, more cyber-physical systems will be deployed using advanced simulation platforms that cover model-based mechatronic systems engineering, embedded system design integration, and simulation models that validate product and system design in the physical world. Cyber-physical System Development Process Cyber-physical systems are an engineered system or mechanism controlled or monitored by computerbased algorithms and tightly integrated with both the internet and its users. In cyber-physical systems, physical and software components are deeply intertwined and get much of their intelligence from the use of AI and ML. Factory production lines, process plants for energy and utilities, and smart cities will depend on cyber-physical systems to self-monitor; optimize; and even run infrastructure, transportation, and buildings autonomously. In the future, cyber-physical systems will rely less on human control and more on the intelligence embedded in the AI-enabled core processors. These will run the devices, products, and systems that will be a pervasive part of the industrial world that produces them.

from automation technology will accelerate the development of open process automation systems and related standards. For example, one initiative is being driven by a collaboration of end users, including ExxonMobil, Aramco, BASF, ConocoPhillips, Dow, Georgia-Pacific, and Linde. These companies are members of the Open Process Automation Forum (OPAF) established by The Open Group to identify and select appropriate standards for technology and systems to support in-teroperability, avoid technology obsolescence, and deliver more business value. The goal of this collaboration is to accelerate creation of a standards-based, open, interoperable, and secure automation architecture that addresses both technical and commercial challenges of current systems. A recently developed test bed for use by the collaboration partners will act as the foundation for testing the performance and operation of individual components and standards. The collaboration partners will nominate and prioritize new components, standards, and system features to be added and tested. The results from the test bed will be shared with all collaboration partners and create a foundation for developing future solutions. At the asset/application level, a parallel (and potentially converging) end user-driven effort, the NAMUR Open Architecture (NOA) standard for transferring field equipment information, continues to gain traction in Europe and elsewhere. NOA uses a standardized information model to securely transfer field data from within the control system to cloud or on-premise applications for monitoring and optimization (M+O) purposes. The main purpose of NOA is to reduce the cost and effort required to integrate M+O applications while safeguarding real-time, deterministic process control and instrumentation. NOA demonstrators have shown that the principles behind NOA are sound. Proof-of62 Automation

Ensuring the cybersecurity of information systems and associated networks has always been challenging. Serious vulnerabilities are identified on a regular basis and new threats continue to emerge to exploit those vulnerabilities. Industrial systems share many of the same vulnerabilities and are subject to the same threats. However, the consequences may be very different and, in some cases, more severe. This makes cybersecurity an imperative for the asset owner, who ultimately must bear the consequences of an adverse event. The threat is ongoing and evolves constantly, so cybersecurity should not be viewed as a one-time “project with a defined beginning and end. Since there is no such thing as being fully secure, the preferred approach should also be ongoing. This is similar to the approach used for safety, quality, and other performance-based programs. It’s also not sufficient to focus on specific elements. Instead, asset identification and management, patch management, threat assessment, and so on are all parts of a broader response that must address all phases of the life cycle. This response begins by identifying principal roles and assigning responsibilities and accountability for each stage of the system life cycle. With these addressed, the well-established systems engineering discipline can provide effective tools and methods to help define, plan, and conduct the response.

Digital Transformation Shifting Focus from Digitization to Digitalization Technologies As part of a natural evolution, digital transformation is shifting its primary focus from basic digitization to digitalization. Digitization focuses on technology and infrastructure and involves creating digital versions of previously analog data, such as replacing paper-based work orders with digital work orders and replacing legacy analog field instrumentation and control systems with digital technologies. Digitalization, in contrast, involves using digital data and technologies to improve business or work processes. For example, utilizing data from a digital work order to improve maintenance work processes and execution, or using digital twins to improve asset information and/ or engineering processes. Digitalization can improve the way people work, collaborate, and get things done within a plant, across a company, or across the entire value chain. Examples would include using digital twins to support engineering, augmented reality (AR) for assembly and maintenance, and virtual reality (VR) for training and simulation.

DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION Successful digital transformation involves both digitization and digitalization. Digitization makes it easier to capture, organize, and manage a variety of data; while digitalization enables organizations to gain tangible business value from those data. Digitalization focuses on multi-process disruptive change and how to implement these changes throughout an organization. It engages an entire company and its people, rather than just processes and data.

Digital Transformation Council Provides Opportunities to Learn from Peer Organizations Thanks to the pioneering efforts of many of today’s industrial, infrastructure, and smart city-related companies and organizations, we’re seeing an increasing number of pilot-level digital transformation projects being launched. This includes projects that utilize the technologies and approaches discussed here. Many leading end user organizations have started to see meaningful and measurable results.

Certainly, embracing newer technologies involves a degree of risk. ARC’s research indicates that many digital transformation projects can fail to produce meaningful business value because either the critical cultural and workforce issues were not addressed in advance or the project team was unable to scale up their pilot-level projects successfully. To help overcome these and related issues, ARC encourages end users to engage with their peers via the Digital Transformation Council (DTC), a global, member-driven community for professionals in industry, energy, and public-sector organizations on a digital transformation path. DTC members have an opportunity to share their strategies, experiences, and practices to mutually support each other. There is no fee to participate. FIELD INSTRUMENTS

Are You Putting All Your Eggs In The Same Basket? Incorporating resilience in safety and control layers The future of the process industry is digital. Digital transformation holds many opportunities for plant operators to enhance efficiency, increase flexibility and make their plants future-proof. At the same time, the growing level of automation and connectivity can be a door-opener for serious threats to plant security. In recent years, large-scale professional cyberattacks and chip hardware vulnerabilities affecting industrial plants around the globe have clearly shown the need for the process industry to take segregation and cybersecurity more seriously Why we need Segregation on all layers including Control and Safety? In late 2017 a safety controller deployed in process facility in Middle East was hacked. The safety instrumented system (SIS) was compromised and initiated a plant shutdown. While no damage or injuries occurred, the incident should serve as a wake-up call to heighten awareness of segregation and cybersecurity in the industry as it was the first publicly-known successful attack on a safety instrumented system – which is the last line of defence in any process plant. Furthermore, critical hardware vulnerabilities affecting most modern processors have recently been identified. Attack modes such as Meltdown and Spectre exploited these in order to steal data from computers all around the world. It again reopened the discussion around the layer of protection and additional segregation requirement in different layers. An independent protection layer (IPL) is a device, system, or action that is capable of preventing a scenario from proceeding to its undesired consequence independent of the initiating event or the action of any other layer of protection associated with the scenario

To reduce the risk in all prevention layers International standards provide guidelines and recommendations. For instance Safety Standard IEC61511-2, states clearly that Basic Process Control System(BPCS) & Safety Instrumented System (SIS) should be completely separated, isolated & independent (clause 11.2.4). The standard states that SIS is normally separated from the BPCS for the following reasons a) To reduce common cause, common mode and systematic failures, minimizing the impact of BPCS failure on the SIS b) To retain flexibility for changes, maintenance, testing and documentation relating to the BPCS c) To facilitate the identification and management of the SIS devices, making the validation and FSA of the SIS more straightforward and clear. d) To support access security and enhance cyber security for the SIS, such that revision to BPCS functions or data do not impact the SIS e) To reduce the amount of analysis that should occur to ensure that the SIS and BPCS are properly designed, verified, and managed. This separation can be achieved via identical separation (Same technology) or diverse separation (different technology). For SIL-3 and SIL-4 requirement diverse separation have to be adopted and identical separation is not sufficient. As stated in the IEC61511 standard, that nowadays, users prefer to utilize Programmable Electronics (PE) technology for both the BPCS and the SIS. As it provides maximum flexibility and the ability to interchange information between the BPCS and the SIS. But unfortunately these characteristics can be counterproductive when trying to maintain separation and independence between the BPCS and the SIS. ICSS is a concept with both BPCS and SIS integrated. It simplifies the configuration by using common network domain, common software library, Common Engineering work station. ICSS concept adopted for SIL-3 requirement, directly contradicts with IEC 615112, clause A9.4.2 for having different manufacturers for diversity. It also does not fulfil completely the measures of “Differences as per IEC61511, Clause 11.2.4

Standards and Segregation

There is no safety without security

The purpose of modern functional safety solutions is to reduce safety and security risks to a minimum. Therefore, a holistic approach is needed which not only includes the core SIS (final control elements, logic solver incl. I/O module and sensors), but also its environment like the engineering station, asset management tools (AMS) and handhelds as well as field entry panels and HMIs.

The security requirements deserve to be defined in a similar manner which is to specify protection layers and provide separation between the layers. This is because the security environment is the protecting layer which prevents security threats reaching the SIS. Befitting with this concept, Zones and Conduit concept is described per the international standard for automation security, Automation

FIELD INSTRUMENTS IEC 62443-3-2. A zone, in line with this standard, is a dedicated part of an overall application where identical security recommendation apply. Each Zone is having clearly defined perimeters and dedicated interfaces to other Zones as shown in the Figure - Zone & Conduits (IEC 62443).

For each of the Zones (or layer) we need to define what level of security protection measures are to be implemented These measures are the ‘Foundational Requirements’ as per IEC 62443-3-3 and listed as following: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

Identification and authentication control Use control System integrity Data confidentiality Restricted data flow Timely response to events Resource availability

The intent is to keep the threat or risk in a Zone from reaching another. Hence each Zone acts as a protection layer and any interface or conduit should have enough measures to avoid breach of security. Therefore the BPCS, SIS, Maintenance and Engineering workstation and office zones should be segregated. Why do we need Safety and Security management? A well-structured management plan for the Safety and Security should go in tandem. Data flow requirements, interfaces and required defense systems have to be designed and built according to the International Standards IEC 61508/61511, Security Standard IEC 62443 and others.

The holistic approach should address security and safety management system, secure communication infrastructure and Zones\Layers capable to withstand security breaches. For instance for an effective cyberdefense, the computer infrastructure should be set up with a secure firmware (BIOS) management, reduced access rights and with only the required Windows services activated. Portable devices (Laptops) should not be used as engineering stations as they can be easily moved between zones. The engineering station should be kept completely separate from other functions and the engineering station for one zone should not handle the other zones. All devices (controllers, PCs, remote IOs, firewalls…) should feature an intelligent password management system and install mission specific set of application programs alone which are to be regularly updated with necessary patch management to list a few measures. The need of the day is a lifecycle management approach for both Security and Safety. The design, realization, operation and maintenance should all provide a management plan for Security and Safety. This approach should not be applicable for the industry alone but users, manufactures, vendors, service providers all should take the responsibility to incorporate safety and security lifecycle management for themselves. We need to act now against a common threat. “The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don’t do anything about it.” Albert Einstein Author: Rehan Ahmad, COO and Shafeekh Rahiman, Lifecycle Service Manager, HIMA Middle East

INDUSTRIAL CONTROL SYSTEMS CYBERSECURITY

How to securely bridge the gap between ICS/ SCADA OT and Corporate IT? The business case for connecting OT and IT Critical Infrastructure companies and organizations have usually two separate and fundamentally different networks: on one hand their regular corporate IT enabling all their support functions such as payroll, HR, procurement, etc., and on the other hand the network hosting their production processes such as SCADA, DCS or in general Industrial Control Systems Operation Technology, ICS OT. Even if today these two types of networks rely on the same COTS technologies such as TCP/IP and MS Windows servers, they are still very different in nature. Corporate IT cybersecurity focuses on the CIA trio: Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability. ICS cybersecurity must protect first and foremost the availability and the integrity of the networks and systems controlling and, more importantly, insuring the safety of the industrial process they control. Whereas corporate employees can comfortably perform their function without the corporate network for few minutes (they can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee while waiting), the Industrial Control System must shutdown the plant if the OT network is unavailable even for a few seconds. The loss of production and the time to restart the process would easily cost few millions USD to hundred million USD for large plants. Moreover, the Confidentiality of data on the ICS OT network is not a major concern because most of the data are meaningless for everyone except the Control Systems of the plant. Nevertheless, Corporate IT users, when they finished their favorite hot beverage, may require production information to perform trend analysis, to do the billing or other production related applications. Therefore, the challenge is to provide Corporate IT users with data from ICS OT while preserving the Availability and the Integrity of the ICS OT. The pros and cons of the classical cyber security solutions The first and the usual solution to protect the ICS OT is the Air Gap, aka Sneaker Net for the people who remember floppy disks. Basically, there is no connection whatsoever between Corporate IT and ICS OT. The data required by corporate users are copied on USB memories or DVD-ROM and manually transported to the Corporate IT network to be uploaded. This is not a real-time data exchange, it requires a lot of manpower performing not the most interesting job. The perception,

that Air Gap is the ultimate cyber security, is totally wrong. In general, the USB memories used to transfer the data are not discarded after the transfer and are used over and over to do the transfer. If the corporate network has malware, it can easily infect the USD memory which in turn will infect the OT network once reconnected to it. We have seen customer’s OT networks which have more virus than on Internet. Moreover malware on Air Gap OT networks are harder to clean because of the lack of patching and the difficulty of updating the anti-virus software. The second solution is to use firewalls at the edge of the OT network so that all connections between OT and IT go through a Firewall. Often there is a Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between OT and IT protected by firewalls to act as a buffer between the two networks. All connections from IT must terminate in the DMZ and can’t directly access the OT network. That the best practice and it does offer some security. The real issue is that the firewalls themselves are very vulnerable. http:// cve.mitre.org/ is the website publishing all the publicly known vulnerabilities of all IT products. The leading brand of Firewalls which are supposed to protect your infrastructure have dozens of vulnerabilities and most of them have default hard-coded login/password. These are known as back door to enable Security Services and well-informed hackers to get administrative access to them. This defeats totally their purpose, it’s like having a million-dollar safe but there is one single master key worldwide. Or this is as efficient as setting your nuclear missile launch code authorization to 00000000. Don’t laugh, it was the default for many years in the US. Why firewalls are so vulnerable? Because they are build using an operating system, best case scenario some flavor of Linux, which has vulnerabilities, software which has bugs and vulnerabilities, and configurations which are not secure by default. Even if your firewall was setup properly, and it’s a big if, its configuration has the tendency to drift and the firewall will end up looking as a piece of Swiss cheese: full of holes. The FOX IT Data-Diode: a game changer So you have actual requirements, which you can’t ignore, to bridge Corporate IT and ICS OT networks, but the usual cybersecurity solutions are ineffective to protect your critical infrastructure which is a target for competent and properly funded/motivated hackers: what to do?

Automation

67

INDUSTRIAL CONTROL SYSTEMS CYBERSECURITY It’s near impossible to secure your Corporate IT networks because of its complexity and openness. The question is not if Corporate IT will be compromised but when it will be hacked and how devastating the impact will be. Therefore you need to be 100% sure, not 99.9% sure, that no hacker can jump from IT to OT. This is why you need to easily transfer data from ICS OT to Corporate IT with a device, being 100% sure, that whatever happens, nothing can be transfer from IT to OT. The FOX IT Data Diode is a layer-1 one-way pure hardware device, which guarantees that data are transferred from OT to IT while it’s physically impossible to send anything through the Diode from IT to OT. The Diode is a new class of product: it has no Operating System, no firmware, no logic, and no configuration. It is a simple device, hence its beauty. There is only a fiber optic connection in and wired to an electronic transceiver that converts light to electric signal, then a light emitter connected to a single strand of optical fiber out.

You may think “that’s nice but none of my application on IT or OT is compatible with one-way traffic: they all rely on two-way applications and protocols such as TCP/IP.” If you don’t think so, that’s probably because you need a caffeinated beverage. Actually the Diode is compatible with most protocols and industrial applications as far as the communication is one-way from a business perspective. A proxy on the OT side of the Diode will translate two-way protocols into a one-way communication and send the data one-way through the Diode. At the IT side of the Diode, another proxy will pick up the data, translates them back to twoway protocols and sends them to the IT network. FOX IT Data Diodes have been successfully deployed in the GCC with Oil & Gas companies, Airports, and governmental organizations. In Europe they also protect Nuclear Power Plants, Electricity Distribution networks, and many other critical infrastructures. We hope that we have piqued your interest and we’re available for more details on www.gsn.ae.69 Author : Gilles Loridon, CEO, GSN

It’s physically impossible to send information backward because on the Corporate IT side of the Diode there is

only one emitter and no receiver. The FOX IT Data Diode is the only device in the world certified EAL7+ with the Common Criteria. The best firewalls are certified EAL4+. Because the FOX IT Data Diode has no configuration it can’t be misconfigured: either it works or it doesn’t, there is no maybe. You can give administrative access to the best hacker in the world, Neo obviously, and he won’t be able to send data from IT to OT through the Diode because it’s physically impossible.

INDUSTRIAL CONTROL SYSTEMS CYBERSECURITY

Securing Critical Infrastructure Systems Introduction Enterprises are looking into protecting the interconnected system driven by the convergence of IT and OT to enable them to improve productivity. Smart Factory improves manufacturing efficiency by using industrial IoT technologies and IoT platforms, and integrating with business systems. However, its adoption expands the attack surface, which benefits cyber attackers and increases the risk of operation stoppages. Security is therefore essential to the realization of smart factories. OT Cyber Security Challenges The threat landscape has also changed. Targeted attacks on critical infrastructure have been there since 2010. The hacker groups behind these attacks are usually sponsored by nations. They built device-specific exploits to make significant damage to power companies and etc. So back then, CI operators paid more attention to OT security comparing to smart factories. However, In the last couple years we’ve been seeing more and more major breaches on Smart Factories. The damage were huge like hundreds of $M, but they were still non-intentional attacks like worm propagation. Only in the last 6 months, we have started to see targeted attacks in Smart Factories. Like the ransomware LokerGoga hit Norsk Hydro in this March, and cost Hytro $40M in only first week. Targeted Attacks on Critical Infrastructure (OT/ICS)

network from the business network. The Internet puts an impassable barrier in place that prevents attackers from reaching it. However, an ‘Air Gap’ is no longer an operationally feasible solution in today’s connected world. IIOTs, (Industrial Internet of Things) exposes the previously isolated OT network to cyber threats. Worms Wander: OT to IT The TRITON (or TRISIS) malware attack specifically targeted controllers made by Schneider Electric. That said, if WannaCry and Petya could move from IT to OT, it would be unsafe to think that IT networks would be immune from OT worms. IIoT convergence does not discriminate sides. Insecure Controllers ICS development paralleled the evolution of the microprocessor and personal computer during the 1980’s and 1990’s. Yet Internet-based technologies only started making their way into ICS designs in the late 1990’s. Today, the goals of safety and efficiency are faced with a large gap in basic security. Although controllers are built for ruggedized environments, they lack critical security controls. Negligent Insiders When an accidental or negligent change is made to OT network, that can be just as threatening as an intended one. Whether it’s an employee or a 3rd party contractor does not matter. What does matter is that you know about it - right away.

OT Cyber Security Challenges List

Disgruntled Employees We trust our employees. Sometimes things happen beyond our control and the reactions from individuals put all employees at risk. Whether a disgruntled employee steals code or sabotages a production line or poisons an ingredient, the impacts can be catastrophic.

Low Visibility Because of lack of adequate visibility, if there are vulnerable devices, effective and timely patches cannot be provided to them.

Weak Authentication A malicious person can easily manipulate mission-critical assets without credentials, often because of unsecure industrial protocols.

Unpatched Devices Vulnerable devices cannot be patched in a timely manner because of the need to wait for manufacturing downtimes.

Skills Gap Knowledge about cybersecurity in many OT is insufficient.

• Flamer • Havex/Dragonfly • WannaCry

Malware Moves: IT to OT Although WannaCry and Petya did not specifically target industrial networks, they did reach them. The incidents raised the profile of how malware can move to ICS environments. It opened up perspective that if bad actors wanted to launch a ransomware attack on industrial networks, they clearly could. Airgap Myth Believers Until recently, industrial networks were separated from the rest of the world by ‘Air Gaps’. In theory, an ‘Air Gap’ is a great security measure - disconnecting the industrial 70 Automation

PROCESS MEASUREMENT, AUTOMATION AND SAFETY

Adopting & Adapting Latest Technology in Oil & Gas Industry Over the years, great advancements in Analysis techniques have given us a wide choice of Analyzers. From Lab Analyzers to Process Analyzers, Analytical systems have become robust, simple, require less maintenance, are flexible and do not highly trained professionals to handle them. Parallelly, demand to improve Capital and Operational expenses have been leading EPC, Manufacturers, and System Integrators to adapt & adopt the latest technology in Process Analyzers. Technologies like Tunable Diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS), Tunable Filter Spectroscopy (TFS), VUV Spectroscopy & Raman Spectroscopy, give operators increased confidence on the Analysis due to operational advances like no consumables and simpler Sample Handling Systems. TDL Technology: Tunable Diode Laser has quickly become the big player when it comes to Process Analyzers. Almost every Manufacturer has adopted TDL in their Analyzers. The ability to do stable noncontact measurement without complex Sample handling systems and a maintenance-free reference cell is an attractive proposition for many plants. New Analyzers with TDLAS have the ability to measure upto 5 components in single Analyzer (CH4, O2, CO, H2O, Temperature).

an LDL of 0.1 ppm. This could be only achieved due to the Multipass principle where the path length was approximately 12 meters. The entire Project achievement is an Analyzer with very low CAPEX and OPEX and Analyzer with high uptime availability, minimum human intervention and presence which is perfect for remote unmanned locations. Also, passive cooled shelter is the new solution to deal with the regular Oman environment, keeping the ambient of the Analyzer. Solar Panel system helped meet the power consumption of the Analyzer system to support uninterrupted availability. Data availability at Muscat CCR thanks to digital data transfer through Modbus TCP/ IP over GSM from site TFS Technology: With the innovation of the Digital Era for Hydrocarbon Measurements, TFS has stormed the market as an alternative to Conventional GC. The ability to give a better throughput and precision with a response time T90 less than 1 second helps to enhance the performance and is reliable for speciation analysis in APC controls. Traditional GC’s are definitely the powerful and first principle analyzers but has some limitations in regards to the utilities required like carrier gases, calibration gases, etc. and also the continuous requirement of spare parts and typical response time of about 3-15 minutes makes it more complex in this era of technology. With an ever-increasing install base, TFS technology caters to the name Optical GC with almost no OPEX. Complete Analysis of C1 to C5, hydrocarbons, alkanes, alkynes, and alkenes can be done along with BTU, Wobbe Index & Density.

One such adoption of TDLAS was done in OGC. The Analyzer package was a Solar based TDLAS Analyzer in a Passive Cooled Shelter with Data Transfer over a fixed IP in 8 different remote locations in Oman. The Analyzer used an extremely narrow band to measure the target gas which reduced interference from other species with

One such adoption of TFS was done in ADNOC LNG. The TFS Analyzer was run in parallel with a Conventional GC for almost 1 year. The Analyzer reading was updated every 5 seconds compared to a 460 second cycle on the traditional GC. The Analyzer came factory calibrated and during the run cycle of 1 year, it was never required to calibrate and did not need any carrier gas to run. A simple sample system consisting of flowmeter and Pressure regulator made any periodical maintenance close to nill. At the end of the project, the Conventional GC were replaced with TFS. The sample transport length reduced from more than 50 meters to a mere 5 meters due to the robust design with Zone 1 certification which does not require any Shelter or Cabinets and can act as a standalone unit with a very simple Sample conditioning system. Raman spectroscopy: Although Raman spectroscopy is not a new concept, its adoption is still in the toddler stage when it comes to our Analyzer industry. The Raman effect has the same vibrational modes such as a MID – Infrared but with an excellent spectral resolution, minimum component overlaps and maximum component specificity. The Analyzer can measure multiples streams simultaneously with a detection limit of less than 1 ppm. The ability to insert the probe directly into the Process, the Analyzer is equipped with a fiber optic multiplexer which drastically increases response time and also reduces the dependability of extractive sample and fugitive emissions. 74 Automation

It’s about time to adopt and adapt the new technologies in our Process plants. With new technologies competing, the right choice of the most appropriate technology is the key factor. By choosing the right Analyzer, we not only safe-guard our process, we are also able to optimize and improve it which plays a crucial role in the long run. AIMS always has been the leader in introducing the latest trends in the market. Analyzer Manufacturing locally in GCC is this year’s target for AIMS to achieve Customer confidence and with the massive setup already in place, we are closer than ever to achieve this. The challenge for the end-users of both downstream and upstream is to identify the right partners with proven technical expertise who can assist in designing, developing and manufacturing the right Analyzer system combining the right technology with the right application. Well, that is a challenge for sure and together as an Oil & Gas family we need to face it. Author : Maaz Ahmed Shareef, Project Manager, AIMS

When a Dream Needs a Gentle Push to Give It Wings-Sponsored by Analytical Division Of ISA Growing up as the youngest child in a family of five, abandoned by your father, neglected by your elder brother and sister, with just your mother who is a day laborer in a physically unwell state of health and with the dreams of one day becoming a Chemistry Professor is really hard. This is exactly the condition of Mohammed Sajib Sheik, a 10 year old boy hailing from a slum in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Sajib’s father abandoned the family a long time ago. His elder brother and sister are both married and living their own happy lives while almost totally neglecting the existence of their own mother and brother. Sajib’s mother, Sofia Begum works as a day laborer to provide for herself and Sajib. But, because of being physically unwell, she isn’t able to go to work daily and so the responsibility of taking care of his mother and himself falls on the meek shoulders of young Sajib. He has to works after school, selling newspapers and water bottles to meet their needs. Like all other kids of his age, Sajib too loves playing cricket. He sings as well. But unlike every other kid whose role model might be a cricketer in this cricket crazy nation, Sajib’s role model is Alfred Bernhard Nobel, the world famous Swedish Chemist and founder of the Nobel Prizes, and hence his love for Chemistry. Once, at school, during a session of Science, the teacher was teaching about mixtures and it was a little above the understanding capabilities of a regular Sixth Grader, but Sajib easily understood the concepts and was given the opportunity to perform experiment in front of the whole class, and that too very successfully. He is passionate about his dreams to become a Chemistry professor one day and that is clearly reflected in his academics. But the only thing in his way to achieve that dream is the current situation he is in. No one to help him progress with his education, no one to guide him and help him plot his next steps 82 Automation

in education. And this is where C2C has come in to help him. C2C has taken Sajib under its wings and are supporting him by providing 1000BDT per month to help take care of their accommodation needs so that he can use the money he earns by himself to help complete his education and pursue his dreams of becoming a Chemistry Professor. C2C has a really good idea of how Sajib should carry on his education so as to achieve his dream. The Bangladeshi educational system is basically divided into 7 levels: •Pre-primary: Play School to Kindergarten •Primary: Grade 1 to Grade 5 •Junior School: Grade 6 to Grade 8 •Secondary School: Grade 9 to Grade 10 •Higher Secondary: Grade 11 and Grade 12 •Bachelor’s Degree: 4 years •Master’s Degree: 1 year According to the above given system, Sajib is now in Junior School and has a minimum of 9 years of education left to finally be able to achieve his dream. As per the Government curriculum, basic Science will be taught to all students from Grade 6 to Grade 8. From Grade 9, Science will be broken down into Physics, Chemistry and Biology. And it is also from Grade 9 that the education stream will be divided into Science, Arts and Commerce and this will be followed up until Grade 12. So, Sajib will have to opt for the Science stream from Grade 9 and then continue his education to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry and then opt for a Master’s Degree in Chemistry to increase his chances of becoming a Chemistry Professor. Sajib is currently being sponsored by the Analysis Division of ISA. With a helping and guiding hand behind him, Sajib can easily achieve his dream and build a brighter future for himself and his family.

THE WATER PROMISE – DMS Global joins hands with WATER RELIEF.ORG Clean water has become one of our most precious resources in the 21st century, in fact, one in nine people live without access to clean and drinkable water. The water crisis is real. It’s affecting men, women, children, families, and farmers. Women and children are spending hours a day fetching dirty water which leads to illness and disease, robbing entire communities of their futures. Lack of access to safe water and proper sanitation harms health. When health is affected, it limits education, leading to a cycle of poverty.

A bold commitment should be made to make sure everyone gets a chance to drink water from a reliable source. DMS Global has joined hands with WATERRELIEF.ORG, a nonprofit charitable organization in helping to plant more fresh water wells and pumps throughout Africa and Asia. Recently, DMS Global has taken an initiative to providing funds to dig a well in Ukhiya Village, Cox Bazar District, Chittagong division in Bangladesh. This is to help the refugees from Myanmar who are currently residing in Bangladesh. Every gift has an impact. Let’s share this gift of water with everyone.

A Bangladeshi sporting legend is supporting a project set up by an Etihad cabin crew member to help children in Dhaka escape life in the slums Former Test Cricket Captain, Mushfiqur Rahim, visited the Choice to Change (C2C) school this week along with a team of Etihad volunteers to lend their support to the school’s efforts. Slovakian Eva Kernova founded the C2C to support 25 children in a ramshackle school after visiting slums during a flight layover.

Etihad joined the project by offering staff free flights every two months to visit the school, as well as donating from its guest air miles’ scheme to pay for a bus to transport children from the slum into the school.

Since then, the school has attracted more than 1,000 Mohammed Loch, Ms. Kernova’s partner in the charity, visitors, including almost 600 cabin crew from Emirates said the increasing numbers of airline staff wanting to and Etihad, to help the charity school grow. About C2C

The Choice to Change (C2C) was founded by Eva Kernova, and Sunil Baroi, in July 2010. They chose to change the lives of poverty-stricken children in the slums of Dhaka by paving an educational pathway for them to follow. Attaining any type of formal education would have been impossible for these underprivileged children without the help of such a non-profit organization. The school now comprises of 148 children, 9 teachers headed by a headmaster, social worker, a nurse and a head-cook. In 2013 DMS Global partnered with C2C to cover the administration and marketing costs as well as the responsibility of the fundraising for the school operations as part of their CSR initiative.
