This year, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch asked its readers to vote on the businesses, community amenities, people, restaurants, and services that reflect Southwest Illinois’ unique values. With over 100 winners, the greatest of Madison, St. Clair, Monroe and Macoupin counties found their place on this reader’s-choice list of The Best of Southwest Illinois.

This year, three national businesses were also recognized as the best of Southwestern Illinois for their contribution to the area. ABOUT THE EVENT On July 26, Gateway Classic Cars in O’Fallon, Illinois will be hosting The Best of Southwest Illinois event to celebrate all of these amazing local winners. training in 1960, Bernice Thompson visited black patients in the basement at Barnes Hospital because it was segregated.

Nearly 60 years later, she underwent a brain scan on the hospital’s 10th floor as a volunteer for a research study on Alzheimer’s disease.

Thompson, 81, is part of a movement at Washington University to overcome the history of mistreatment of African-Americans in medical research and improve the diversity of its clinical trials.

“I really do want to see more AfricanAmericans participate in the studies,” Thompson said. “We need to know how we can help each other survive.”

Borroni, 57, got called once more for stagehand work, but not again. He felt useless, he says, and started feeling overwhelmed. The world had changed with lightning speed from the St. Louis he knew back in 1978, the year he was locked up for murder.

“The whole technology thing really blows my mind,” he says. “I felt out of place. I couldn’t relate.”

Frustrated, Borroni walked to the St. Louis Public Library last month to try to send an email to his sister, his only five minsurviving relative, and spent five utes manipulating a phone she gave him to send a text.

Gun violence has changed the routines of the women who lead Moms Demand Action, which started after the 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

“We’re not free until we can live our daily lives without fear of getting shot,” said Jessica Coleman of the St. Louis chapter of the group that advocates for gun violence prevention. “We owe it to our kids to solve this.”
