McCluer’s Robayo-Camargo excels in pursuit of the American dream BY BRIAN WEBSTER STLhighschoolsports.com

Sophia Robayo-Camargo couldn’t speak English when she began a new life in America with her mother nine years ago. Now she’s graduating at the top of her class at McCluer High School and preparing to attend Washington University on a full scholarship. “I’ve always done my best,” RobayoCamargo said. “My mom pushed me to get good grades. The only time I struggled was when I first came to the country and I didn’t know the language yet.” McCluer’s Post-Dispatch Scholar Athlete earned straight A’s while participating in sports in each of her four years at the school. She played tennis in the fall, swam every winter and played soccer each spring. Robayo-Camargo also worked, saving enough money from part-time jobs to buy herself a car. “Sofia puts a lot on her plate and a lot on herself,” said Michelle Ortiz, McCluer’s girls tennis coach, who has known Robayo-Camargo nearly six years. “Even though she’s an accomplished, scholarly student, whenever she was playing tennis, her head was in the game. She was able to schedule her life around her sport.” Classwork always came first, but sports gave Robayo-Camargo something fun to do. “Athletics allowed me to be more involved with the school and community,” Robayo-Camargo said. “It does help to blow off steam and takes away the stress that comes with school.” Listing all of Robayo-Camargo’s accomplishments, particularly on the academic side, would take an inordinate amount of time. What she overcame in order to collect so many achievements and secure her scholarship to Washington University is the better story, according to McCluer High principal Cedric Gerald. “We can look at a young lady like Sofia and know that whatever odds you need to overcome, with perseverance and integrity, you can excel,” Gerald said. Robayo-Camargo spent the first nine years of her life in Bogota, the capital city of Colombia. Her mother, Liliana Camargo de

Flores, fell in love with an American man she met in Bogota. When the two married, de Flores and young Sofia hugged their Colombian relatives goodbye and flew away to a new life in the Chicago suburbs. Young Sofia attended a bilingual elementary school where classes were taught in English. The teachers discouraged children from speaking Spanish unless necessary. “I can tell that it was really hard and frustrating for her,” de Flores said, remembering how her daughter struggled to catch on in that first year. “Her first teacher kept telling me, ‘I know she’s very smart,’ but Sofi would get bored in class and start drawing pictures because she didn’t know what they were talking about.” By her third year in America — thanks to a steady diet of Disney movies at home — Robayo-Camargo’s English had improved so much that she got placed in advanced classes. She demonstrated both a knack for and intense interest in science and mathematics. She had her career path more or less mapped out by her 12th birthday.

“Initially, I wanted to work with children,” Robayo-Camargo said. “I thought about being a pediatrician. But then when my little brother came along, that shifted my focus to OBGYN.” Robayo-Camargo had always wanted a sibling. When her mother announced she’d be getting one, she took an active interest. “I was all up in it,” she said. “Not just because I always wanted a little brother, but because it was another reason to be really involved throughout the pregnancy, the exams and ultrasound.” Her involvement didn’t stop there. “When I was in labor having the baby, she was taking pictures and asking the doctor questions,” de Flores said. Robayo-Camargo entered McCluer with a keen sense of the opportunities that could become available to her. All she had to do was stay on track, which wasn’t always easy when schoolwork, athletics and other extracurricular activities overlapped in challenging, inconvenient ways. “I sometimes had to remind myself of my goals and what is required of me to get

there,” Robayo-Camargo said. “If I have to pull an all-nighter, I will pull an allnighter to get my schoolwork done.” Gerald began his tenure as principal the same year Robayo-Camargo entered as a freshman. He marvels at how comfortably she blended with the rest of the students, despite being what he called a “minority among minorities” in Ferguson. “She had to acclimate herself to a predominantly African-American culture,” Gerald said. “Not to mention she’s a minority female at our school. But she has always taken it on with such grace.” In her freshman year, Robayo-Camargo began working to re-establish the Latino Student Group. She served as its vice president all four of her years at McCluer. “We (Latinos) weren’t really emphasized at our school,” she said. “Being a first-generation immigrant, I know what it’s like to feel unwelcome sometimes. I wanted a place where Latino students could come together and connect.” Robayo-Camargo returned to Colombia the summer before her 15th birthday to reconnect with her own roots and celebrate Quinceanera, the Latin American equivalent of Sweet 16, except it’s a year earlier. “Sofi wanted to be around the folklore, the music and the people,” de Flores said. “So I took her to Colombia and she spent all her summer there with family and her baby brother.” Back in Ferguson, though, RobayoCamargo is as proudly American as any teenager born here. Gerald said she’s performed the National Anthem at several McCluer High events over the years. “She’s talented in so many ways it’s insane,” Gerald said. “She has a great singing voice.” Robayo-Camargo loves both the country of her birth and the land of hope and possibility her mother brought her to nine years ago. The American dream is not some abstract, out-of-fashion idea to Sofia or her mother. It lives inside her. It drives her. “In America, if you want something you can get it,” de Flores said. “But you have to want it. You have to work for it. Sofi is an example of it.”

STATE OF THE ART

Lutheran South’s Rauh uses experience with kidney transplant to paint strong future BY STEVE OVERBEY STLhighschoolsports.com

Madeline Rauh will never forget the initial words from her father minutes after her sixth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly at the Missouri State High School Activities Association state swimming meet 15 months ago. Nathan gazed at the medal around her neck like any proud father. “Then, I asked her, ‘Do I get one too?’” Nathan recalled. “Part of me was out there doing that.” The light moment signaled the completion of an incredible journey for Rauh, now a senior at Lutheran South and winner of the school’s 2019 St. Louis PostDispatch Scholar Athlete award. Madeline grabbed her first state medal with a transplanted kidney in her body, one donated by Nathan a few years earlier. She said it was the best moment of her young life. “It made me look back on things and feel proud of how far everything had come along,” Madeline said. “And how he helped me get to that point.” Less than two years earlier, Madeline wasn’t sure she’d ever be able to swim at a state-caliber level. Diagnosed with a failing kidney months before her freshman year, she spent an entire year waiting and hoping that a donor could be found. Madeline was forced to go though her first year of high school spending nightafter-night hooked up to a dialysis machine to keep her body functioning as normal as possible. Her entire freshman campaign was a day-to-battle with little or no energy in her body. “A lot of nights I just had to stay home,” she said. “I couldn’t go out. I was limited physically.” Explained her best friend and fellow South senior swimmer Isabell Banks, “She

was so sick and I felt so sorry for her. But she never complained. She made the best of it.” All that suffering changed — thanks to Nathan, who still remembers his reaction when he found out that he was a suitable donor. “So happy,” he noted. “Then it was, ‘How quick can we get this scheduled?’” In mid-June of 2016, the two underwent simultaneous surgeries at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Barnes Jewish Hospital with mother Julie by their sides. The operations were a rousing success. “You can’t describe a feeling when you know everything is going to work out,” Nathan said. Actually, the post-surgery recovery was tougher on Nathan, who needed almost six months to return to normal.

“Leading up to it, all she had to go through, it was more difficult on her,” Nathan said. “Then after the surgery, it was harder on me.” Which is normal with kidney transplant patients. What was not normal was Madeline’s quick recovery time. She went right to the water after clearance from her doctor and immediately shaved eight stokes off her times in the butterfly and 200 individual medley, her two signature events. That rapid progression eventually led to the sixth-place finish at state, which Madeline duplicated in February on a return trip to state as a senior. “She’ll go down as one of the best swimmers we’ve ever had here,” Lutheran South athletics director Mark Linneman said. Rauh went on to a stellar performance at

the Transplant Games of America in Salt Lake City following her junior year. She won gold in the 50 butterfly and 50 backstroke and also grabbed five other medals at the national competition, which is held every two years and features athletes that have undergone major transplants. But Rauh does not necessarily want to be known for her swimming skills. Or as the girl with a new kidney. Her passion is art and animation. She has already been accepted to the prestigious Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia. “I love transforming what’s in my head into something aesthetically engaging,” Rauh said. “The storytelling that comes with what you create — it’s a great way to connect with people and make a statement.” A 4.0 student ranked 11th in her graduating class of 119, Rauh’s art can be found all along the hallways at South. She said her best work came out of a series of selfportraits with herself as some of major characters in the Kill Bill movie series. Banks loves Rauh’s recent rendering of music icon David Bowie. “She has such a natural ability,” said Danielle Jahnke, the head of the Art Department at Lutheran South. “Her color sense is amazing. If she wants to do anything art related — she’s going to find a way.” Rauh, who is also a cheerleader at South for the football games, has done volunteer work at Children’s Hospital and with the Christian Friends of New Americans. Plus, she has the ideal summer job — working at the iconic Ted Drewes. There were times when Rauh struggled to find the words to thank her father for the incredible gift. But Nathan said it’s not words, but her actions, that give him the most joy. “The things she’s accomplished and that she hopes to accomplish, nothing makes me happier,” he said.
