Earlier this year the St. Louis County Council approved managed archery deer hunts for several St. Louis County Parks. These hunts will be managed in cooperation with the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). Where: Greensfelder, Creve Coeur, Jefferson Barracks and Edgar M. Queeny parks for archery When: Nov. 7 – 30 Registration: July 1 – 31 for one fall hunt. You will be disqualified and will not receive a preference point if you apply for more than one hunt. Regulations: Hunters will be required to attend a pre-hunt orientation by the St. Louis County Parks Department and the MDC. Hunters will be notified of time and location. Hunters will be required to hunt from elevated stands. Locate the no-hunting zones as designated by supplied maps. Distance regulations from residences, pavilions and pedestrian/ bike paths will be strictly enforced. There will be 30 hunters drawn for each managed hunt. Hunters will be allowed three tags, two antlerless and one antlered deer tag. The antlered deer tag will be allowed to be filled only after the hunter has harvested an antlerless deer. The tags purchased and used for these park hunts will not count against other annual deer tag limits. For hunters lucky enough to be selected for a managed hunt, congratulations, good luck, have fun and remember to be courteous to all you encounter. You are the face of our hunting community and how the public perceives hunters will be based on their interactions with you. Register online between July 1 and July 31, 2020 at mdc.mo.gov.

There’s more than one way to
CATCH A TROUT COMPILED FROM THE MISSOURI DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION
Want to catch more Missouri trout? You may need to change your methods as the seasons and local conditions change. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) shares how to increase your chances. EQUIPMENT A hand net to land a trout (which easily break the line when pulled out of the water) A stringer labeled with your name and address Hemostats to remove swallowed hooks Waders or waterproof boots (Remember that some parks allow wading while others do not. Make sure you know the regulation for your park. Also, felt or porous-soled waders are prohibited in Missouri trout streams.) A fishing vest to carry the essentials Polarized sunglasses to reduce glare and enable you to spot trout beneath the water’s surface Rod and reel A basic spin-cast rod and reel will work fine, but other combinations can be more effective. Ultra-light rods and spinning reels are more flexible and easier to feel a strike. Rods 6 to 6½ feet long prove to be better for casting and make it easier to use a float. An ultra-light spinning reel is especially made for light lines such as 4-pound test. Baits, flies and lures Trout rely mainly on their sense of smell as well as sight to detect food sources. For this reason, there is a variety of colored scented baits available to catch trout. Common commercial brands include Berkeley’s Power Bait and Zeke’s. They both come in an assortment of colors and utilize scent attractants. Velveeta cheese and bread are also excellent choices. Hatchery-raised trout have fed on small brown pellets for most of their lives. For this reason, locally made dough baits can prove exceptional for catching trout. This type of bait is usually found in the park store. METHODS Drift fishing This method can prove to be very effective in any condition. You can cover a large area and present your bait to a number of trout. Start by using a split shot approximately 12 to 24 inches from your hook. Use a leader if fishing is slow. Adjust to water conditions accordingly (larger split shot and longer leader for deeper, fastmoving water). Use a small treble or salmon hook. If you use a treble hook, mold your bait (Berkley’s Power Bait, Velveeta cheese, Zeke’s cheese, bread or locally made dough bait) on the hook so that it is covered entirely. Use just enough bait to conceal hook and no more. If you use a salmon hook simply hook the salmon egg through the middle. Cast upstream from the fish (if visible) and keep pace with your bait by slowly reeling in the slack line as the current pushes it downstream. Trout may bite lightly so be ready. Setting the hook BRAND AVE. STUDIOS
requires a medium pull back on the rod. A hard hook set on trout will cause you to catch less fish. Trout can be choosy and may like one color on a given day but not the next. Try different colors if one is not working for you. Another helpful hint is to find out what other fisherman are using and this may save you some time. Flies and lures may also be used for this method. Float fishing This method is similar to drift fishing with the exception of using a floater (bobber). A small slender floater is recommended. Adjust your floater accordingly with the depth of the trout. Set the hook when the floater makes a sudden movement. Fishing with jigs There are several different artificial lures out there; however, marabou jigs have proven themselves year after year. They come in a variety of sizes (1/16-ounce to ½56th of an ounce) and colors. Effective colors are yellow, olive, white, black, brown or a combination of colors. You can drift fish your marabou with or without a float. No split shot is required unless it can improve your presentation in swift/deep water or when using light jigs. Heavier jigs may require trimming the tail to about half or more. Experiment with different techniques such as a slow vibration (“jigging”) retrieve. Immediately set the hook when you feel a strike. Avoid setting the hook on sight alone and rely more on feel. Like with bait, experiment with different colors. Tight lining Bottom fishing may be the easiest method, yet it can be very effective. Use your polarized glasses to spot trout in slow moving water and prepare for a relatively carefree fishing experience. Rigging consists of using the desired hook with bait and crimping the appropriate split shot 12 to 24 inches above the hook. Cast your line upstream from the fish and let the bait settle to the bottom. Reel up your slack line and sit back and relax while you wait for a strike. Watch your pole closely for the slightest movement because trout may bite lightly. After a few minutes reel your line in and check your bait. Freshly bait your hook and cast in a different spot. Avoid using this method in high water. TIPS FOR SUCCESS Murky water conditions You can use heavier line and a heavier split shot during murky water conditions. The murky water will help conceal heavier line. A heavier split shot or lure is often required because the water level will tend to be higher and swifter when murky. Clear water conditions Use clear nylon sewing machine thread or two-pound test line for leader line on a clear sunny day. Trout will often see larger line and shy away under clear water conditions. Use your polarized glasses to locate fish. Trout generally tend to school up in deep holes when the spring level is low. For more detailed information about your fishing trip such as stream conditions, directions or any question, please contact the hatchery office located in each park. STLTODAY.COM/OUTDOORGUIDE
Recipe: Stuffed Trout BY MISSOURI DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION
Trout have been described as “the quintessential low-fat, low-sodium food.” It is a wonderful source of protein and low in calories. Fish are the only significant source of oils containing Omega-3 fatty acids. These oils are beneficial as a preventive in heart disease, arthritis and other ailments.
Ingredients:
3 stale rolls or several pieces of stale bread 1 egg 1 c. milk 1/3 c. chopped onion 1/3 c. chopped raw bacon 4-12” trout 8 oz. crabmeat Pinch of oregano Juice of ½ lemon Salt and Pepper 2 dashes Worcestershire sauce
Instructions: Split and bone trout, but do not separate the halves. To prepare stuffing, soak bread in milk, squeeze dry and add egg. Sauté bacon and onions until the onions are limp but not brown. Add the crabmeat and sauté for five minutes. Add to bread mixture, then stir in remaining ingredients. Spread the stuffing on ½ of each trout and fold the other half on top. Sprinkle top of trout with paprika and brush with melted butter. Bake in 400 degree oven until skin is brown and crisp.

Everything you need to know for a successful spring turkey hunt CONTENT PROVIDED BY THE MISSOURI DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION
Consider these tips for a successful spring turkey hunt. Time of Day — Many hunters are in the woods before dawn, and most turkeys are killed before 8 a.m. However, turkey hunting after 8 a.m. can be rewarding. Most people leave the woods by 10 a.m. If you have the patience to stay late, there are fewer hunters in the woods competing for available birds. Location — It is important to start your hunt from a good location. Be careful not to hide too well. You want to be able to see in every direction in order to spot approaching hunters. Consider any movement in the woods to be another hunter until you can positively identify the object. Attracting a Bird — Hooting like a barred owl or cawing like a crow usually encourages a turkey to gobble and are preferred ways to locate the birds early in the morning. Hooting and cawing may get him to gobble without making him look for you. Various Calls — Variations of the yelp are the most frequently used calls. Most spring turkey hunters yelp from three to seven times — it’s not critical how many times, but rhythm is important. It really does not matter whether you are raspy or smooth, or using friction or diaphragm calls. Rhythm is the most important feature of effective calling. Pre-recorded tapes of turkey calls can help you learn the various calls and associated rhythms. It takes Practice! Sometimes you can use every call in the book and you still have trouble getting the gobbler to come in those last few critical yards. Possible reasons and solutions: • A physical barrier, such as a wovenwire fence between you and the turkey or another hunter or predator may have caused him to abandon you for the moment. • You may have called too loudly. Generally, turkeys only call loud enough to be heard by another turkey. When your call is too loud, the gobbler assumes the hen is close and he begins to strut and display. • Try turning your head to project the call behind you and the gobbler may move closer. • Be patient, you may be able to wait him out. If the gobbler has hens with him, eventually the hens may leave and your periodic calling will start working on the gobbler’s mating urges. • How often and how loud you want to call varies with the situation and will come naturally to you with more experience. • Keep the turkey interested. If he loses interest, he may move out of the area or go to another
BRAND AVE. STUDIOS
hen. Remember, the gobbler responds to stimuli and to lure him in, you must emit the strongest, most seductive stimulus while interacting with him. EQUIPMENT — Proper equipment can make the difference between an enjoyable or miserable hunt. A good idea is to develop a checklist, especially if you are traveling a great distance to hunt. Be prepared for the unexpected. Shotgun Selection — A 12-gauge shotgun is the standard among turkey hunters. Smaller gauges, particularly 20 gauges, are a great choice for young hunters. • Shooting at a turkey at more than 40 yards is not recommended, regardless of which gauge shotgun is used.
STLTODAY.COM/OUTDOORGUIDE
• Your choice of choke may make the difference between a clean kill and a crippled bird. The most popular is an extra-full choke, which gives the tightest pattern. A tight pattern is important in order to strike the vital headand-neck area. • Many hunters now use shorter-barreled shotguns, which are lighter and easier to maneuver. The most common shot sizes are Nos. 4, 5 and 6. Pattern your gun with several sizes and select the load and shot size that pattern best. Bow hunting — Bow hunting for turkeys is challenging. Use a broadhead design that inhibits full penetration, which generates more impact and kills a turkey more quickly. Turkey calls — Another important piece of equipment is a turkey call. There are a variety of calls on the market but basically they fall into two categories–friction calls and air-operated calls. Friction calls are probably the easiest to use. Two surfaces are rubbed together, creating friction that produces sound. Box and slate calls are examples of friction calls. Air-operated calls create sound when air is passed through or over the call. The three basic air-operated calls are the yelper, the tube call and the diaphragm call. All of these calls require practice to become proficient. Your best bet is learning from an experienced caller and from the turkey. Audio and video tapes may also be helpful. General Equipment — Other equipment you may need for the hunt includes: a knife, compass, topographic maps, rope, first-aid kit, insect repellent, rain gear, camera and your turkeyhunting permit. Camouflage clothing, including hat, gloves, face paint or mask, can be helpful and are considered essential by some hunters. A blaze-orange hat or vest is recommended when moving in the woods, and another vest or orange sash is suggested for wrapping your turkey when carrying it out of the woods. Physical Preparation — One other important consideration before the hunt is yourself. Missouri turkey hunting can be physically demanding. Prepare yourself for the long walks, steep hills and adverse weather conditions. Prehunt scouting will help you get into shape.
