f you have just 20 minutes a week to spare, you have time to build your strength and fitness. 20 Minutes to Fitness offers safe, effective training for people of all ages and fitness levels, from older, sedentary adults to elite athletes. 20 Minutes to Fitness uses a medically based approach that includes training on MedX physical therapy equipment, says general manager and physical therapist Casey Breslin. “Our 20-minute workout delivers the same strength-building benefits as working out three times a week lifting weights in a typical gym. It efficiently and systematically builds strength and bone density, and it increases our clients’ metabolism.” Like most women over the age of 50, Sue Matlof began experiencing a decrease in her bone density. Knowing how important strong bones are to overall health and longevity, she booked a session at 20 Minutes to Fitness in Clayton. “That was 15 years ago,” Sue says. “It keeps me coming back because it’s doing good things for my body, and Casey watches over me when I train so I don’t have any injuries.”

very year the winter ‘blahs’ coincide with Hollywood’s award season, when the stars seem impossibly fresh and radiant, glowing like they’ve just come off of a month-long spa vacation. Now St. Louisans have access to a rejuvenating skin treatment once available exclusively to A-listers. The Aquagold finetouch system — a cutting-edge procedure that painlessly lifts, tightens and contours the face — is available as part of the Liquid Gold Facial at St. Louis’ Laser Me medical spa. In fact, it’s the very same treatment Kim Kardashian used to get red-carpet ready for last year’s Met Gala. The Aquagold Fine-Touch system acts as a catalyst for Laser Me’s exclusive Bio Serum Technology, to be derived into the skin with “MicroChanneling”. Laser Me’s serum, which includes both Botox and dermal fillers, has been created to eliminate the appearance of pores, instantly tightening and sculpting your face. Results are immediate. Covered in 24k Gold, the needles are

finer that a human hair. Painless, the small needles are stamped into the upper dermis of the skin, allowing difficult areas to be treated in a way like never before. “We use Micro-Botoxing to target above and underneath the eye area, and around the mouth. The results are really quite instant, soft and beautiful,” says Rachel Schulte, Laser Me’s co-owner and

operator. “It’s perfect for anyone who has never wanted to get injections as well as for those who have had Botox and dermal fillers, as it will prolong the life of your injections.” “Anyone wanting to lift, tighten, sculpt, or someone simply wanting to improve the appearance of their skin is a good candidate for this procedure. But we all want tight skin!” Schulte says. The process starts with the application of topical anesthetics. After the skin is numb, the painless Liquid Gold Facial takes as little as 20 minutes. “You will look beautiful and will seriously glow as you walk out the door, but you’ll see even greater results at one to two weeks,” Schulte says. Botox and injections often come with side effects that take time to subside. “With the Liquid Gold Facial, there is absolutely no downtime! No one will have a clue that you’ve had any aesthetic procedure done, and you’ll look better than when you walked in our door. I don’t know of any other facial that can accomplish what this does,” Schulte says.

The best news is that the results of tight pores and sculpted skin will last two to three months, leaving your face tight and gorgeously sculpted. For more information about the Liquid Gold facial — as well as the many other treatments offered at Laser Me in St. Louis — visit LaserMe123.com.

decrease muscle soreness. The center’s “Super Stretch” equipment stretches the knees, hips, back and shoulders.

Sue Matlof credits her workout with helping her build her bone density, among other health benefits.

Golf and cycling fitness programs are both designed to optimize athletic performance. The cycling program focuses on enhancing strength and stamina in the lower body regions of the quadriceps and glute muscles. Golfers can choose a specially designed regimen that strengthens their obliques, back and leg muscles, while also stretching the muscles used in the golf swing. In addition to building strength, the program increases flexibility and range of motion in the torso and hips. 20 Minutes to Fitness also offers a range of other services, including therapeutic massage, physical therapy, and movement and mobility sessions to help relieve everyday aches and pains. The Clayton location has a state-ofthe-art 3D body scanner that tracks progress by measuring inches lost, muscle gained and body composition and comparing millions of other data points. 20 Minutes to Fitness has studios in Clayton (314-863-7836) and Chesterfield (636-536-1504) as well as Tampa and Sarasota, Florida. espite the stress of work and daily responsibilities, Americans don’t take full advantage of their vacation time and forfeit their chance to relax and restore their overall wellbeing, according to a report from Project: Time Off. The findings from Project: Time Off’s State of American Vacation 2018 showed that a majority of Americans (52 percent) left vacation time unused in 2017, adding up to 705 million unused days. Further, nearly onein-four Americans (24 percent) have not taken a vacation in more than a year, the survey found. Vacation is essential for strong bonds with family and friends, a productive workforce and a fulfilled life. Studies show that regular travel boosts mental health, reduces stress, enhances creativity and even lowers the risk of heart disease. “Traveling has lasting benefits for our mental and physical health, but work-related challenges like the fear of looking replaceable often prevent people from taking much time off,” said Jan Borje, vice president of AAA Travel. “Yet those who take most or all of their vacation time report dramatically higher rates of happiness than those using little to none of their time for travel.”

To help people find ways to use their vacation time, AAA Travel Agency has offices throughout the St.

Louis and Metro East areas staffed by knowledgeable travel agents. The importance of using a travel agent can’t be overstated, Borje explained. While many people get frustrated trying to book their trips online, travel agents have the expertise to research a destination and put all the components together.

Plus, because of its size and partnerships with preferred vendors, AAA Travel has access to benefits and savings that travelers can’t obtain on their own, she said. For example, cruise passengers might be eligible for special onboard credits. “We have great relationships with cruise lines and tour companies, and we know the best ways to save you money,” said Borje. “Our travel agents have been to many of the destinations that people want to visit, so they have firsthand knowledge to help travelers get the most out of their trips.” The hottest destinations right now include Alaska, Ireland, Italy, central Europe, and Canadian rail adventures, she said. In addition, river cruising remains a growing trend. “Our agents are adept at planning everything from weekend getaways to bucket list destinations,” Borje said. “You should always travel with someone you trust, and you can trust AAA.” To find a AAA Travel Agency office near you, call (866) 222-7587 or visit AAA.com.

Located at the corner of Main and Eastgate streets, The Prime Place at Wildwood Town Center will offer a new kind of independent senior living community where residents can celebrate luxury living with apartment homes ranging in size from 680 to 1,300 square feet. With endless possibilities, residents can savor quiet relaxation, explore the town or enjoy the included features. It’s an ideal community where residents can experience a mixed culture of activity and tranquility,” said Michael Kennedy, chairman and CEO at KAI Design & Build, the project’s general contractor. “Prime Place will offer an array of amenities and events where residents can stay engaged but still feel independent.” While typically geared to adults 55 and over, anyone is welcome in the stylish senior community. The focus is creating an environment where residents can enjoy a worry-free home with the freedom to live each day self-sufficiently. The development plans include 48 apartments, featuring one, two and three bedrooms on the second through fourth floors and a 5,000-square-foot restaurant with outdoor patio seating and retail space on the ground floor. While the restaurant is open to the public, a daily dinner is included in the monthly services. “Prime Place is located in a desirable neighborhood,” Kennedy said. “Being located in downtown Wildwood makes it easier to encourage independence, pushing our residents to move forward while immersing into a hospitable community and creating new memories.”

In addition, on-the-go seniors will be in walking distance to several additional restaurants and shops. Along with shopping, residents can take advantage of the nearby movie theater, pharmacy, grocery store, medical offices, gym, parks and trails. oor diet is a leading factor in three major diseases accounting for close to 50 percent of all deaths in the United States, according to the American Medical Association. Considering the fact that everyone has to eat, this is an alarming statistic. “Many people have good intentions when it comes to healthy eating, but they also have a lot of misinformation about what this really means and how to translate this into foods they are willing to eat,” states Dr. Amy Knoblock-Hahn (aka Dr. Amy).

This New Year, whether you are retired or simply looking to downsize, independent living is the best of both worlds. Residents have the choice of being active in the community or having privacy on other days; interacting with new people; gaining the freedom of a maintenance-free home and having all of the benefits, services and utilities included in one monthly bill. Dr. Amy is a registered dietitian nutritionist and health behavior expert. Her practice, Whole Food is Medicine, aims to transform individuals into their healthiest selves through the application of a “whole food first approach” combined with complementary treatment choices and healthy lifestyle behaviors. While many people fall prey to promises of quick weight loss through special supplements, powders and pills, Whole Food Is Medicine recognizes that changes in body composition and health do not happen overnight. In fact, anything that happens overnight is temporary! Dr. Amy shatters common nutrition myths and throws out the cookie-cutter diet plans. Whole Food Is Medicine uses a customized approach to help people reach and maintain their health goals. “Each individu-

al has unique nutritional needs. Age, gender, stage of life and environmental factors influence the types and amounts of foods you should enjoy and incorporate into your daily eating patterns,” states Dr. Amy.

Recognizing that time is another barrier many people face, Whole Food Is Medicine utilizes real-time video technology for all appointments. This enables clients to receive nutrition and behavior consultations through the comfort of their home, office or while traveling. Clients can also access a free app for instant message questions and monitoring between sessions. Research has shown that these technological support tools heighten the ability to achieve goals related to weight, blood sugar and blood pressure. If, like most Americans, your diet is on the verge of killing you – it’s never too late for a change. In fact, studies have shown improvements in diet leading to small and lasting changes in weight can reverse heart disease and cut the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes in half! Most clients who choose to work with Dr. Amy start seeing the results they are looking for within three months.

LipoMelt targets fat while you take a nap A flatter belly in as little as 20 relaxing minutes

aybe you haven’t gotten the results you want with diet and exercise, or you just don’t have the energy to commit to major lifestyle changes. Then it’s time to consider LipoMelt, a safe and effective way to lose inches without pain, surgery or downtime. What could be easier than spending 20 minutes bathed in the warmth emitted from LipoMelt’s unique fat-targeting light therapy wraps? No swelling, no bruising, no side effects — just a slimmer, healthier you, says Dr. Janet Yarger of Life ReShaped, which has been offering the fat-targeting treatments since 2017. “I always encourage people to diet and exercise, but when you combine it

the body naturally. The light also helps improve skin tone and texture. After the light treatment, patients move to a vibration plate for 10 minutes to help stimulate circulation and help the body break down and release the fat. “This is as close to natural weight loss as possible. It’s completely noninvasive, unlike liposuction or surgery,” Dr. Yarger says. Patients often experience a reduction in inches immediately after the first session but Dr. Yarger suggests multiple sessions for best results, along with an anti-inflammatory diet and healthy exercise to help maintain results. After a patient reaches their goal

with LipoMelt you’ll see better results,” Dr. Yarger says. “But even if all you can do is just lay there you’re going to get results. You can come in on your lunch break, lay down for 20 minutes and go back to work — it’s that simple. My patients are shocked by how easy it is and how much they’ve lost.” In fact, Dr. Yarger reports remarkable results. Some patients have lost up to 8 inches total in just one session. “MELTS” STUBBORN FAT Dr. Yarger, a chiropractor, says light therapy has long been used to treat conditions such as chronic pain. But now it’s being aimed at those stubborn fat deposits not-so-affectionately known as muffin tops and saddle bags. LipoMelt works by “melting” the fat out of the fat cells in targeted areas — the belly, arms, legs, hips, buttocks and even face, she says. The technology uses differing wavelengths of light to alter the fat cells so that the fat can seep out. The melted fat is then processed and eliminated from

weight, Dr. Yarger recommends maintenance sessions once or twice a month. The number of initial sessions depends on weight loss goals. A 20-MINUTE POWER NAP For Jennifer, a patient in her 40s who has worked to lose weight after the births of four children, LipoMelt was the key to finally reducing the stubborn areas that weren’t responding to diet and exercise. Jennifer says the procedure is easy and relaxing. “You’re wrapped in warm light, and maybe you nod off for a short 20-minute power nap, and then you’re done.” “LipoMelt has made a drastic difference in places that I thought would only have been helped with surgery,” she says.

Stop suppressing symptoms

Get to the root of the problem using a functional medicine approach

By Jennifer L. Mason, Brand Ave. Studios Contributing Writer

L

ocated in Richmond Heights, The Institute of Natural Health is a functional medicine clinic offering laboratory testing, diagnostic and treatment services such as IV treatment, weight management, hormone therapy, and genetic testing to name a few. With the help of your health history and a physical exam, this common-sense, science-based healthcare practice can help identify the type of treatment needed to improve or sustain your quality of life. Founder and clinical director T.J. Williams, DC, Ph.D. first locates the cause to correct the problem. “We don’t just offer one service, nor do our patients typically come to us for one ailment,” Williams said. “Patients come to us because we get to the root of their problem. Once we identify the cause, then we address that. We do not chase and treat symptoms, we get to the cause.” The mission of The Institute of Natural Health is to provide affordable, natural healthcare to help patients achieve their highest level of vitality and well-being. According to Williams, The Institute receives many of their referrals from patients who are tired of having a diagnosis placed on them and then blaming all of their complaints on that diagnosis or

they don’t want to take medications or have surgery. The testing provides a better understanding of the hierarchy of issues and the order in which to fix them. For example, a patient may come to The Institute for hormone issues, but through testing finds out they have high lead levels. In this case, Williams and his team would treat the lead first because it disrupts the hormones. “We discuss everything in the almost two-hour consultation,” Williams said. “When a patient first comes in, we take an extensive history. We want to know where they grew up, where they lived, how old the house was, if they were exposed to mold or tobacco; we discuss all of the environmental exposures first. A person’s history is typically a good indicator of what we need to look at first.” The Institute of Natural Health believes proper health advice and patient care comes from actually knowing a person’s history — more than what can be gathered in a 10-minute office visit. The Institute works to ensure all of the tests, treatment possibilities and services are available to each patient. “We explain to you in detail what’s going on within your body and we make sure you understand,”

Williams said. Patients are encouraged to ask questions and ultimately, the ball is in their court. According to Williams, the average person in the U.S. is on multiple medications. When The Institute of Natural Health receives a new patient over the age of 60, on average, they are taking a minimum of 11 medications. “Unfortunately, Americans are inundated with medication commercials on TV,” Williams said. “However, people are waking up and realizing the pill-for-a-problem model of healthcare is not working for them.” If conventional medicine has failed you, or even if you just want to remain healthy, consider science-based healthcare at The Institute of Natural Health. Research shows that it takes 17 years for clinical research to be implemented into conventional medicine practice. The Institute of Natural Health bridges that gap. New technology improves bone and muscle strength By Jennifer L. Mason, Brand Ave. Studios Contributing Writer Photos by J. Beauvais Photography

T

here are 206 bones in your body, and it is more important (and easier) to keep those bones healthy than you may think. Besides mobility, the skeleton protects the brain, heart and lungs. With more than 52 million Americans affected by osteoporosis and osteopenia (low bone density), research has proven that physical performance improves with bone strength.

of the way they impact the ground.” OsteoStrong allows all of us who aren’t gymnasts to get the benefit of this highimpact level force without the risks normally associated with it. “We have people from ages nine to 90 using our system comfortably and with amazing results!” says Harper. The process is called osteogenic loading, and it triggers changes in

lower and upper body, the core and the spine. Sessions are always supervised by a trained coach and are quick, painless and measurable. Research shows that to trigger osteogenesis (new bone tissue growth) in the hips, a minimum of 4.2 multiples of body weight is needed. OsteoStrong members reach forces in excess of five to 12 times their own body weight comfortably. “It’s quite possibly the most profound development in physical performance in decades, and it is changing the way our physical bodies age,” says Harper. “We have members who are in their 80s loading six and seven times their body weight very easily.” RECONDITION YOUR BONES The Spectrum System is a medicallybased approach that was invented by a biomedical engineer, Dr. John Jaquish, whose mother had osteoporosis. His belief was that anything that is deconditioned can be reconditioned. “It is one of the first physical medicine products where you can take a high performance athlete, or a deconditioned elderly person — that’s the whole spectrum — and massively affect their physical performance, whether they are carrying groceries or breaking a world record,” said Dr. John Jaquish, chief science advisor for OsteoStrong and author of Osteogenic Loading. All OsteoStrong locations offer a complimentary session to anyone who would like to learn more.

A coach assists a member on a loading machine.

OsteoStrong utilizes a series of four robotic musculoskeletal treatment devices called the Spectrum System. It works for almost all ages and fitness levels and it is currently most popular among athletes looking to gain an edge, as well as those dealing with — or trying to avoid — a diagnosis of osteopenia or osteoporosis. Sessions take only about seven minutes, one time per week. TRAIN LIKE A GYMNAST “The easiest way to understand the concept is to think about a gymnast,” says owner and operator Laura Harper. “Research shows that, of all athletes, gymnasts are the ones building the highest bone density. This is because

muscle density, as well as the thickness of muscles, tendons and ligaments. In other words, it benefits the entire musculoskeletal chain. Many members experience better posture and balance, improved athletic performance, less joint and back pain and have even reversed osteoporosis. CONTROLLED PRESSURE According to Harper, members are self-loading through controlled movements. “Our equipment functions differently than gym equipment — there are no weights or pulleys. It allows members to emulate high-impact in a safe, controlled movement.” There are four machines targeting

OsteoStrong has four Missouri locations; Creve Coeur (314)300-6902, O’Fallon (636)238-8696, Ballwin (636)697-3902, and Clayton (314)541-5661. Visit osteostrong.me for more information.

JOHNNY AND LAURA HARPER Johnny and Laura Harper were the visionaries responsible for bringing Osteostrong to Missouri and are the regional developers for the entire state. Since the Harpers opened in Creve Coeur in July of 2016, there are a total of 13 franchises opening in the next two years, and most are in the St. Louis area. Johnny is focusing on expanding the brand outside of St. Louis. “I have a goal of opening 60 OsteoStrong centers throughout the state and I’m searching for like-minded entrepreneurs that desire to help others while owning a business that is changing lives and has virtually no competition.” With Tony Robbins as a partner, OsteoStrong CEO, Kyle Zagrodsky, has taken the brand international and has created one of the fastest growing holistic wellness franchises in the state. Visit osteostrong.me/franchise to learn about franchise opportunities.

JANA - 54 MEGAN - 23 MEMBERS SINCE FEBRUARY 2018 “My doctor recommended OsteoStrong to me after I started experiencing side effects from osteoporosis medication. After learning there was also a benefit for muscles (myofibrils), tendons and ligaments, I decided to have my daughter join with me. Megan was diagnosed with hypotonic muscles as a baby that caused a lack of muscle tone and a significant muscle nerve delay which impacts her reflexes. Poor reflexes have limited her driving capabilities, but after 10 months of OsteoStrong, at age 23, Megan is able to drive by herself and has her own car! I know I’m strengthening MY bones, but Megan’s results are a dream that we never thought would become reality! Thank you, OsteoStrong!”

COLT - 27 MEMBER SINCE JULY 2018

“I started OsteoStrong to see what it would do for my lifts at the gym. The week before OsteoStrong, I did 4X8 of 620 lbs. on leg press, and 4X8 of 365 lbs. on hack squat. Two weeks after starting OsteoStrong, I was able to do 4X8 of 800 lbs., and 4X8 of 500 lbs., respectively!”

PATTY - 62 MEMBER SINCE SEPTEMBER 2016

“Ten years ago I discovered that I had osteoporosis in my spine. I chose to monitor it and took no injections. Every year, my scans showed no significant changes. I decided to try Osteostrong in 2016. After five months, I had another scan and again had no significant change. But after 22 months of Osteostrong, I had another scan and my spine density increased 8.8 percent! I now have osteopenia instead of osteoporosis. I was shocked and pleased, as was my doctor. My doctor asked what I was doing differently and I told her that I had been going to Osteostrong... I couldn’t be happier with my results or with Osteostrong!”

I have a great staff who specialize in making patients feel comfortable from the time they place the initial phone call until their last appointment.” Dr. Clemens also emphasizes the importance of a timely evaluation. Many hemorrhoid flare-ups can be prevented by a change in habits, therefore eliminating the need for a procedure.

veryone has hemorrhoids. Not everyone will develop symptoms from enlarged hemorrhoids, but it is an extremely common medical condition. An estimated 80 percent of all people will suffer from the symptoms of enlarged hemorrhoids at some point in their lives. When hemorrhoids become enlarged they can result in very bothersome symptoms. External symptoms consist of itching, burning, discomfort/pain and a swelling around the anal opening. Internal symptoms can be a vague pressure as well as a protrusion of tissue through the anal opening during bowel movements (BMs). There is sometimes bleeding as well as difficulty staying clean after a bowel movement. Common risk factors for developing enlarged hemorrhoids are prolonged sitting or standing, heavy lifting, straining during BMs, being overweight and pregnancy/delivery. However, many people develop symptoms without any known risk factors. Hemorrhoidal symptoms can be embarrassing, making it difficult for people to seek treatment. There is a perception that all hemorrhoid treatments are painful, require missing work or activities and have the possibility of severe complications. Betsy Clemens, MD, a board-certified physician at the Midwest Hemorrhoid Treatment Center says it is important to seek a proper diagnosis and discuss treatment options early. Finding the right physician increases the odds that a minimally invasive treatment such as infrared coagulation (IRC) will be successful. During IRC, a device targets infrared light on the enlarged hemorrhoidal tissue which causes the vessels to shrink and retract. According to Dr. Clemens, “IRC is the least-invasive procedure available. Patients have excellent results and are very happy with the entire process at Midwest Hemorrhoid Treatment Center.

2019 resolution: Stop suffering in silence

UltraSlim® is the only noninvasive procedure for immediate fat loss without dieting, exercise, drugs, or surgery. Patients lose fat immediately with our patented process. This device uses a special patented type of light to stimulate and shrink fat cells. The treated fat cells respond by opening temporary pores in the cell and emptying the fat cell contents, releasing all of that stubborn fat you just can't seem to get rid of, without dieting or exercise.

FALL

“Ketogenic diets work by forcing the body to burn our own fat as the preferred fuel source,” Dr. Settle explains. “We interview and test each patient to determine the most efficient way to help them achieve a fat-burning state.” Medi-Weightloss equips patients with supplements and products that are low in calories but high in protein and satiety in order to help the body remain in ketosis and safely reach their weight-loss goals. Patients obtain a better comprehension of how their body works and the understanding that Medi-Weightloss is more than a diet — it’s a lifestyle change. With nearly 100 locations across the country, Medi-Weightloss has helped thousands of people lose more than 6 million pounds over the last 12 years. “Medi-WeightLoss’ claim to fame as ‘The One That Works’ comes not only from helping our patients lose the weight, but most importantly, by transitioning them into our wellness program so that the weight loss can be maintained for a lifetime,” Dr. Settle says. And she’s speaking from experience: Dr. Settle started the program herself in May 2015 and achieved her goal weight by her 50th birthday in July 2015. The pounds have stayed off, too. “I just rang in 2019 by continuing to maintain my goal weight, so I can definitely attest that this program works.”

GAURANTEED 2 INCH WEIGHT LOSS

SPRING

r. Tana Settle, the medical director of Medi-Weightloss in Chesterfield, knows that shedding excess pounds is an intensely personal process, starting with why people want to lose weight in the first place. “It may be that their doctor has advised them to lose weight prior to a surgical procedure, before planning a pregnancy or for general health reasons — for example, to lower blood pressure or treat diabetes. Or, it may be that they just want to lose that last 10 stubborn pounds,” she says. That’s why Medi-Weightloss tailors its scientifically-based program to suit the needs of each patient. Beginning with an individual assessment consisting of a consultation and medical tests, patients are guided through a medically-supervised ketogenic program by an expert team of physicians, nurse practitioners, registered dietitians, trainers, medical assistants and support staff.

If your New Year goals include certain lifestyle changes, you are on the right path to preventing flareups. Lifestyle changes include eating a high-fiber diet, drinking plenty of water and taking appropriate supplements if needed to maintain soft bowel movements; staying physically active; and being smart about heavy lifting. If you suspect that you have hemorrhoids, Dr. Clemens says it’s important to remember that you are not alone. “Many people have symptoms. Do not be scared to come in. Hemorrhoids don’t always require surgery and treatment does not have to be horrible,” she says. Dr. Clemens and the staff at Midwest Hemorrhoid Treatment Center are ready to help you stop suffering in silence.
