DESIGN RECIPES
The neutral color will never go out of style CATHY HOBBS
Tribune News Service
here was a year when on all the runways, gray was the “it” color. You literally saw gray everywhere in fashion. Then there was the trickle-down to home decor. Did gray ever go out of style? The answer is no. In fact, the color gray is hotter than ever, especially in home decor. Have you noticed that gray tends to be an extremely popular wall color choice? Why? Because of its versatility and ability to blend with so many other colors. When it comes to how and when to use the color gray, here are some top tips.
T
Do’s
1
Do blend tints, tones and shades of gray together in a single space.
2
Do use gray as an overall wall or accent color.
Do look for ways to incorporate dominant furniture pieces in gray into a space such as a sofa or area rug.
3
GRAY AREAS
Do consider gray if you are looking for a dark color shade that isn’t quite as harsh as black.
Do pair gray with bright citrus colors such as green, yellow and chartreuse to help create an interesting sense of contrast.
5
Don’ts
ABOVE: Gray bedding is paired with lamps with gray lamp shades in order to create a cohesive and uniform color statement.
Don’t blend warm grays with cool grays. Cool grays have a lot of blue undertones, while warm gray has more tan and yellow. They don’t always blend together.
1
2
Don’t be afraid to use dark shades of gray like charcoal, which can often feel elegant.
Don’t overlook opportunities to bring in gray accent pieces like area rugs, side chairs and even lamp shades.
3
RIGHT: Cool grays help to define this kitchen space, pairing light gray chairs with an area rug, with similar tones.
4
Don’t use dark shades of gray in small rooms, as dark colors can make small rooms feel smaller.
Don’t be afraid to use gray in different rooms of the home, from social areas such as living rooms, to kitchens and bedrooms. Gray is a versatile color that can be used in almost any room of the house.

HOME IMPROVEMENT
How to avoid red flags Hire only licensed, bonded and insured pros who maintain a local and established presence. You want to find someone who will back their work if there are problems years down the line. eyeballing how much an insurance company will pay for a particular roof and do the bare minimum to cover it while claiming the entire insurance check. Then, once the storm has passed, the company vanishes, never to be seen again.
Beware
The scare tactic
contractor
Here’s a true fright: You hire someone for a job, such as installing a new roof, and they quickly start talking about five other things they should fix right away. And, oh yeah, they’ll cost a lot more money. RED FLAG
red flags DREAMSTIME
When hiring for roof repair after a storm, make sure you look for locally owned and licensed contractors rather than “storm chasers” with dubious licensing. PAUL F. P. POGUE | Ask Angi
t’s frightening to think the contractors you pay to work on your home may not always have your best interests at heart. While most pros take their duty of good work seriously, there are still those who seek to take advantage of people’s trust. Fear not, though; there is a solution for every underhanded scheme. And in all cases, the best solution is to stop the fraud before it starts. Here’s our rundown of some of the most common scams and the best way to avoid them.
I
The excessive down payment RED FLAG
Your contractor asks for a down payment that seems high for the job.
Down payments are entirely normal since contractors usually have big material purchases to make. However, a crooked contractor can THE SOLUTION
12
easily take the money and run, and often ask for more than they should. Be skeptical of any contractor who asks for more than ¹/³ the cost of the job. (Some areas, such as California, govern down payments with specific limits. Be aware of your state and local laws.)
The guy with extra materials Someone knocks at your door. “Hey, I was doing a roofing/siding/driveway/etc. job in your neighborhood, and I had some materials left over. I’ll work on your house at a discount so I don’t waste them. What do you say?” RED FLAG
This is one of the classics. Good contractors don’t use leftover materials on second jobs. Odds are this person has some low-quality materials and is going door-to-door with the scheme. If you hire them, the THE SOLUTION
work will be shoddy, and you’ll never see them again. Politely turn them down and close the door.
The storm chaser A recent storm did significant damage to your roof. You need repairs, but most companies are booked solid because everyone else in the area got hit by the same storm. Someone shows up at your door saying they’re willing to work on your roof and even work with your insurance company. RED FLAG
Roofing experts say this is one of the most common schemes because it’s so tempting to believe. Storm damage often takes weeks for local roofers to catch up with, and you want your roof fixed ASAP. Storm chasers know people are desperate, so they travel around with pop-up businesses to weather-ravaged areas. They’re good at THE SOLUTION
STLtoday.com/homes
It’s easy to fall for this one because it’s so logical. If you’re doing a big job, such as removing a roof, it makes sense that you’ll uncover other invisible problems. To avoid this, always get a second opinion before tacking on additional, expensive extras to a project that’s already underway. Also, look out for scare tactics in their wording. If they say, “Your chimney is about to crumble!” rather than “Your chimney could use some structural work,” be skeptical. THE SOLUTION

MOMENT RF
HOME DECOR
Choose a durable upholstery that wipes clean.
It’s easy to clean under elevated furniture.
Patterned rugs don’t show dirt quickly.
DESIGNED TO CLEAN
for elevated furniture 1 Opt When shopping for sofas, credenzas, side tables and really all types of furniture, look for those elevated on legs. Even better: cabinets that attach directly to the wall and levitate off the ground. This way, you’ll be able to easily vacuum or sweep underneath them. For a hands-free cleaning routine, invest in a robotic vacuum that can do all the cleaning for you.
2 Choose
5 choices that make your home easier to maintain KATHRYN WEBER | Tribune Content Agency
ypically, we design and decorate our homes to fit our sense of style — and then those decor choices dictate our cleaning routines. We dust our open shelving weekly and wipe down the marble countertop daily. But what if the process was reversed? What if we designed our homes to make them as easy to clean as possible? If your goal is a low-maintenance home that requires very little time spent cleaning, here are the decor choices to make. Go ahead, design your way to a quicker cleaning routine.
T

the right paint finish If you have messy pets or young kids who are likely to get smudgy fingerprints and errant crayon marks on the walls, avoid matte paint finishes. Instead, opt for the smoothest, shiniest paint finish that will look good — typically eggshell for walls and semigloss for trim. On these glossy surfaces, dirt and grime can be wiped away more easily.
STLtoday.com/homes
3 Select a
durable sofa
When you’re searching for an easy-clean sofa, the upholstery makes all the difference. Leather is easy to wipe clean — just be sure to sop up spills right away and condition it once per year. If you prefer fabric sofas, look for those with stain-repellent treatments or stain-resistant microfiber. Otherwise, choose a slipcovered sofa so you can toss the cover in the washing machine. Consider that darker colors will hide stains better, but it might not be the best option if you have a pet with white fur.
4 Skip open shelving
Elegantly styled shelves look enviable on Instagram, but in reality, they require a lot of extra dusting. For a speedier cleaning routine, stick with glass-front cabinets so you can show off your favorite items while keeping them dust-free.
5 Opt for
patterned rugs
That solid-colored rug might look great in the catalog, but lint, pet hair and other everyday messes will be immediately obvious. Go for a brightly patterned, busy floor covering if you want to go a few days between vacuuming it; you’ll know it needs a vacuum, but probably no one else will notice if your muddy pup took a nice long nap on your multicolored rug right before all of your guests arrived.
