It was 1945. World War II was at an end, and Union Station was jammed with military personnel returning from overseas. Everyone was eager to get back to family life, and the demand for affordable housing was overwhelming. Having fulfilled their duty to their country, three enterprising young St. Louisans, John J. Fischer, his brother Ed Fischer, and brother-in-law Lawrence “Bud” Frichtel decided to start a construction company. Guided by the principle, “Do the job as perfectly as possible – the first time,” their first subdivision, Mary Knoll in St. John, sold out quickly, and the company began to gain a reputation for innovative design and superior craftsmanship.

THE FABULOUS ’50S By the mid-1950s, the “baby boom” – and the housing boom – were in full swing. More than half of American families owned a car, and the move to the suburbs was on. Anticipating the trend, Fischer & Frichtel acquired a 410-acre tract just north of the proposed Mark Twain Expressway, known today as I-70, and west beyond the Outer Belt, now I-270. Designed for 1,800 homes, the community they called Carrollton

made headlines as the first masterplanned community to be introduced to the Midwest – complete with schools, shopping centers, churches, parks and an elaborate recreational complex. The scope and success of this project launched Fischer & Frichtel to a position of leadership in the local industry. When the Blanchette Bridge opened in 1959, Fischer & Frichtel was among the first major homebuilders to cross the Missouri River into St. Charles. And during the ensuing years, the company continued to be at the forefront of the metro area’s expansion. THE NEXT GENERATION In 1984, sole ownership of the company was transferred to the Fischer family, and John W. Fischer was named to the presidency at the age of 31. The son of John J. Fischer, he literally grew up in the business, spending his summers as a teen working on the company’s jobsites. Under his supervision, Fischer & Frichtel has grown exponentially, garnered countless national and local awards, and earned the respect of its industry peers and the innumerable repeat customers who will settle for nothing less than a Fischer & Frichtel home.
