If you’re a borderline hoarder with serious home-organization issues in desperate need of some professional advice, follow The Home Edit on Instagram. Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin started The Home Edit, a home-organization business based in Nashville, Tennessee, in 2015 after a mutual friend introduced them. After a four-hour lunch, they left as business partners, Shearer says.
Whatever chemistry the pair has is clearly working. The company, which has five employees in addition to Shearer and Teplin, has completed dozens of projects in at least 13 cities, with plans to eventually have teams in Los Angeles and New York. Notably, Julianna Zobrist, Christian singer and wife of Cubs player Ben Zobrist, took full advantage of their services. If your home is in dire need of organization, Shearer and Teplin say ease into it: “Always start with a drawer,” they say in a joint email. “It’s like practicing on a bunny slope before heading to the top of the mountain.” When you’re ready to pursue loftier organizational goals, from playrooms to pantries, the organization experts have you covered there, too. With so much of the U.S. workforce — and their families — now cooped up at home to combat the spread of the novel coronavirus, it’s not a huge surprise that home internet is showing the strain. If you’ve had a business videoconference stutter while your teenagers play Call of Duty online, or found yourself unable to stream the news while your spouse uploads huge data files for work, you have a good idea of the problem.
HELP FOR YOUR WI-FI If you are experiencing problems with your Wi-Fi internet connection, here are some suggested solutions: BUY A WI-FI RANGE EXTENDER A Wi-Fi extender increases the range of the connection throughout your home, hitting the corners with weaker service. They range in price, depending on how big your home is and how much boosted speed you want or need. FIX THE ROUTER LOCATION The placement of your router is vital. Move it if possible to a room at the center of your home and in an elevated position, away from other devices emitting signals such as a microwave. CHANGE YOUR ROUTER If you’ve moved your router to an optimal position and updated the most recent firmware, and the internet is still slow, it might be time to change routers.

CONNECT TO ETHERNET Getting a direct connection between your router and your device is more reliable than connecting wirelessly, with less chance of interference slowing the connection. If you don’t have ethernet cables handy at home, you can get them from Amazon. If your device does not have an ethernet port, get a converter. TAKE A BREAK If everyone in the house (and neighborhood) is on the internet at the same time, maybe it’s a good time to take the opportunity to log off for a bit.
IS THERE A BANDWIDTH PROBLEM? The internet’s core is managing the spike in traffic just fine, experts say. It has massive capacity to handle Netflix, YouTube, Zoom and other streaming services. True, Netflix has just throttled down its video quality in Europe at the request of authorities there. But the company already stores its programs on servers close to users’ homes already, and there’s no evidence that it’s clogging networks.
IF THE INTERNET IS SO STURDY, WHY DOES MY CONNECTION STUTTER? The problem partly lies in the so-called “last mile,” the link that connects your home to the ultra-high speed internet backbone. Most U.S. homes get their internet from cable companies and

thus connect to the broader network via coaxial cable, a legacy of the cable TV era. These connections provide faster “downstream” speeds to your home than “upstream” speeds back to the internet. Since videoconferencing sends equal amounts of data both ways, simultaneous sessions can clog the upstream channel and disrupt service for the entire household. If that happens, one quick solution is to have some family members switch to audio-only, which conserves bandwidth. This also applies to anyone in multiplayer online games, where — per a wag on Twitter — the banter between players often resembles conference calls with occasional shooting.
WHAT ELSE CAN I TRY? You could also order a service upgrade, although that might not be strictly necessary. Some providers are temporarily offering more bandwidth, particularly for families with school-age children, in response to the COVID-19 crisis. Others have dropped service caps that charge extra when data usage passes a certain threshold. The relatively few U.S. households with their own direct fiber-optic connections have the same bandwidth in both directions and shouldn’t experience serious hiccups.

Whether you’re buying a first home or are a decades-long owner, adequately insuring your home is crucial. Yet, according to real estate data provider CoreLogic, in 2017 about one in four homes were underinsured by at least 20%. A policy that covers less than 80% of your home’s replacement value is risky. Many policies have an “insurance to value” clause that stipulates coverage must be a minimum amount; 80% is common. If you file a claim and it is determined you’re underinsured by 20%, your claim could be prorated, meaning only paid in part. You don’t want to have to chip in $100,000 to rebuild your $500,000 house. So, consider these ideas: FOCUS ON THE COST TO REBUILD You probably know what your home’s current value is. But when it comes to insurance, the market value of your home isn’t what matters. It’s the cost to rebuild. That might be less than market value, if land values are high where you live.

CONSIDER AN UMBRELLA LIABILITY POLICY A standard homeowner’s policy typically provides up to $100,000 in liability coverage if you are responsible for an accident inside or outside your home. It can also provide coverage if you are sued. You can supplement this with an umbrella policy that buys peace of mind cheaply: $1 million of protection typically costs less than $400 a year. SHOP AROUND If you own a car, check with your auto insurer. When you bundle policies you can qualify for a premium discount of up to 20%. Do a broader search, too. Not in a DIY mood? An independent insurance agent will shop different insurers. The Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America has a free search tool for finding local agents.

An insurance agent can provide the local cost to rebuild per square foot. If you know a good local contractor who deals with new construction, ask for estimates. If you have high-end finishes, consider increasing your square-footage cost estimate. Another option is to hire

Besides, it’s smart to avoid the temptation to make small claims, as sometimes insurers raise the premiums at renewal for policyholders who make small claims. Ask about other discounts, such as for installing a home security system.

A sparkling credit score can also help. An insurance-based version of credit scores is used by many insurers in setting premiums. (The use of credit information to set homeowner insurance premiums isn’t allowed in California, Maryland and Massachusetts.) DON’T SETTLE FOR ‘ACTUAL CASH VALUE’ COVERAGE A policy spells out how the insurer will figure out what you’re entitled to in a claim. Actual cash value (ACV) coverage will disappoint. It pays you based on the depreciated value of your home and possessions. So, let’s say a fallen tree puts a big hole in your roof that’s 20 years old. An ACV policy pays to replace a 20-year-old roof. That’s a lot less than what the roofer charges for a new roof. Replacement value is the way to go. In fact, you should consider extended replacement cost coverage, where your payout can be up to 125% of the policy’s value. Insure your possessions for replacement value, too. You don’t want a check that only pays to replace a 10-yearold couch. Policies often limit coverage for possessions at somewhere between 50% and 70% of the policy value. And there are limits on valuables. A standard policy may limit jewelry coverage to $2,000. If, after careful inventory, you decide that’s not enough, consider policy tweaks to increase coverage.
