In any home, normal wear and tear can cause the main sewer line to eventually back up. This clog can be due to normal blockages from grease and household items or outside problems like encroaching root systems. Whatever the reason, a blocked sewer line is going to cause problems. Resolving the problem should be done as quickly as possible to avoid backups and further cleanup and repair costs. While you can purchase a number of products on the market designed to help homeowners tackle simple drain clogs on their own, seek out a professional plumber or a commercial sewage company for main lines and outdoor issues. Pros use two primary methods to clear out a sewer line: Snaking, or rodding, uses a snake line with an auger on the end. It is usually the least expensive route, running only $100 to $250 or about the cost of a service call. Fixing main line clogs can run twice as much. Most professional plumbers have snakes that are 50 feet
or longer to reach most clogs easily. If the clog is minor, it can be broken up using an auger in a matter of minutes. While it can get the drain flowing again, it is not actually cleaning the entire pipe. The heads are usually smaller than the pipe it’s running through, so it only punches a hole through most clogs. Hydro jetting is a more effective technique and clears more debris than a snake, but increases the price to $350 to $600. Severe and complex work can run upwards of $1,000. Because of the extremely high water pressure, older pipes are susceptible to damage and should receive a video inspection first. Many line blockages take place somewhere inside the house, and can be resolved relatively easily. However, you might also have a blocked main line outside the house. Sometimes these can also be cleared easily, but for a complicated job, you may pay between $500 and $1,000 or more. Outdoor main lines have a wider diameter and can go dozens of feet away, calling for specialized equipment.

Sometimes, your professional will tell you a sewer scope inspection is the right path. This works by placing a small camera on the end of the auger and running it through the pipe. This gives professionals and homeowners a clear view of what is causing blockages, and are particularly worthwhile if you have frequent problems. A scope inspection usually costs between $250 and $500. In many cases, sewer cleaning can clear out an issue and be done with it. However, in some cases, the clog is the result of damaged lines. In that case, you’ll need to hire a sewer repair company. Sewer main repairs cost $1,000 to $4,000 with favorable conditions and easy access. Digging under slabs or in crawl spaces increases the price. Rates will vary considerably depending on the length of the pipe, the complexity of the job, ease of access and your location. Plus, you’ll need to take into consideration cleanup and repair work to your yard and foundation.

SHOOTING THE BREEZE Your home’s outdoor space is the new social spot – here’s how to make the most of it ELIZABETH WELLINGTON | THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER
Summertime is all about that good oldfashioned stoop livin’. When I was a kid growing up in Queens, New York, we’d spend every summer afternoon-into-evening on our stoop. We played hopscotch, jacks and catch. This summer, the stoop is where it’s at. It’s where it’s safe. With a few minor tweaks, we can turn our stoops – and our porches and backyards – into outdoor oases. If we are careful, we can even have two or three friends over. Check out these decorating tips for any outdoor space, whether you’ve got a stoop, roof top, fire escape, porch or full backyard: IF YOU’VE GOT A STOOP What your stoop – or fire escape – lacks in square-footage it makes up in classic, city charm. Make sure you have a comfortable place to rest your bottom on that top step, says Rasheeda Gray, of Gray Space Interior Design in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania. • Pick up seat cushions in summery shades of hot pink, orange, Kelly green or turquoise. If you don’t want to lay out the cash, use some old pillows or cushions to stay comfy, just make sure they have a washable cover. • Potted plants will bring joy to your stoop, too. “The key is choosing the right

size containers for the space,” Joseph Crescenzo, a Northeast Philadelphia Lowe’s store manager, wrote in an email. Too small, your plants will go unnoticed. Try bright blooms like yellow daylilies or a flowering vine, like sweet pea. “These can withstand the summer heat or even the occasional drought,” Crescenzo said. • Swap old house numbers to improve stoop appeal. “It’s a small change,” Crescenzo said. “But you will be surprised how much a new set will change the overall look and feel of your front door.” PRO TIP: Consider coordinating your mailbox numbers, too. IF YOU HAVE A BACKYARD This is the perfect summer to turn your backyard into your favorite vacation destination. • Landscape, landscape, landscape. You don’t want your yard to be marred by weeds and overgrown grass, Greenwood said. Fill your garden with your favorite flowers and herbs like thyme, cilantro and dill. PRO TIP: If you have a wall, attach greenery wall panels. “It’s like an accent wall for the outside,” Gray said. • Hook up your outdoor dining area. While indoor dining is still off limits, your backyard can fill the void. Set up whatever table and chairs you have space for. If you can, make it fancy: Find a beautiful gingham table cloth and matching napkins. Put all of your disposable serving utensils, dishes, silverware and cups in a storage bin that you can keep outside for easy access. Try battery-operated candles and string lights for ambiance: “This can quickly transform the look and feel of the yard,” Crescenzo said.

Your backyard has the privacy for rest, relaxation and even overnight camping. IF YOU HAVE A PORCH Your porch is an extension of your living room, says Jaimi Blackburn, a Villanova, Pennsylvaniabased certified interior decorator. “It’s the first thing that people see so you want it to be welcoming and reflect your style.” So, Blackburn said, give it some color. “Pick a color that makes you happy,” she said. “I love pink and have pink flowers on my porch with all pink accents.” • Get quality outdoor furniture. If you can afford it, pick up some good lawn chairs in a material that can withstand the elements like wicker, stainless steel or teak, Gray said. And find a rug to match. “It’s a nice way to bring the indoors, outdoors,” Gray said.” • Think about comfort and utility. If you have the space add end tables for drinks and reading material. Be mindful of the space; you don’t want so much clutter that you can’t walk around. But leave room for plants. “Greenery is everything,” Blackburn said. • Think about installing a swing or hanging chair, to catch a breeze, a swing or a nap, Greenwood said.

FEEL THE BREEZE Three of the best tower fans to keep you cool
Warm days are still upon us, which makes it a good time to have a tower fan on hand. With vertical designs that typically oscillate from side to side, the right tower fan can quickly cast a cooling breeze across an entire room without taking up a lot of space or using too much energy. On top of that, tower fans offer a good variety of features and designs to choose from as you shop. We’ve found plenty of recommendable models after testing several. Read on for our top three picks. BEST UPGRADE QUIETEST TOWER FAN
Tower fans generate noise, which might be top of mind if you’re planning on using one while you sleep or binge through your favorite TV shows. Fortunately, the quietest fan we tested, the Honeywell QuietSet, was also a pretty well-rounded appliance across the board.
Along with holding its highest-speed setting to a best-in-class 41 decibels (measured at a distance of 30 inches), the QuietSet was also one of the most energy-efficient fans we tested, drawing just 36 watts at full blast. Speaking of settings, the QuietSet offers a whole bunch of them, ranging from a near-silent, 26 db Sleep setting and a comfortably quiet, 28 db White Noise setting up to Relax, Refresh, Cool and Power Cool settings that move greater masses of air while keeping the noise at bay. The $70 price tag makes this model a slight upgrade over your average tower fan, but it looks and feels the part. We wish the warranty ran longer than one year, but that’s just about our only criticism of this impressive tower fan.

BEST OVERALL VALUE Better Homes & Gardens 5-Speed Tower Fan Available at Walmart for less than $50, this Better Homes & Gardens-branded tower fan appears to be a reskinned version of a well-rated model from HomeLabs that sells for roughly twice as much on Amazon. Alongside the sleep timer and the three speed settings, you’ll find two additional modes that simulate a natural breeze. The remote uses magnetism to stay in place on top of the device when you aren’t using it — a nice, high-end touch not commonly found at this price. The sturdy, understated design features a grill that oscillates within a fixed base, making it less conspicuous than a tower fan that turns entirely from side-to-side. While I found it plenty powerful to cool off a medium to large room on a hot day, it still managed to keep things a little quieter than smaller tower fans like the Vornado V-Flow and the TaoTronics TT-F001. We’d like it better if the warranty ran longer than a single year and if the build weren’t quite so plasticky, but those trade-offs are more than fair at this price. If you’re looking for a capable tower fan that feels more expensive than it actually is, this one fits the bill.

When it comes to ultra-high-end tower fans, Dyson is tough to beat. Its latest, the Dyson TP04, is a $550 behemoth with king-size activated carbon and glass HEPA air filters hugging the base intake. That allows it to purify the air it puts out, removing things like dust and allergens from the air you breathe. Dyson claims it can catch particles as small as 0.3-micron wide. Just know that if it’s an air purifier you’re after, you can find lots of good options that cost less. Air filtration aside, the Dyson boasts 10 speed settings ranging from an ultraquiet 28 decibels up to a 48-decibel blast of concentrated air. It was the most comfortable tower fan I tested, too, with a cool, steady stream of air that feels like a much less forceful version of one of Dyson’s bathroom hand dryers. On top of all of that, the TP04 features app-enabled smarts. The app offers a detailed look at the air quality in your home and it lets you create custom cooling schedules, too. You can also use it to customize the fan’s auto-pilot mode to your liking. The TP04 also supports voice controls via Alexa or Siri. All of that adds up to one of the nicest and most fully featured tower fans that money can currently buy. If you want to save some money, the original Dyson TP01, which offers the same design and many of the same features, is still available, too — that one currently costs $160 less than the TP04.

A couple of weeks ago, I received a phone call from one of our lovely customers who had come across a new home decor challenge for us. Like many of us during the time of COVID, she has been using video services like Zoom and FaceTime more than ever, and in doing so, she discovered her desire for a better background. WHAT MAKES THE PERFECT VIDEO-CHAT BACKGROUND? As I tune into the news to watch at-home reporting and chat with my family and friends, I have noticed certain elements work better than others and that clutter creates a noisy environment that makes it hard to concentrate on the person speaking. While there is no foolproof recipe for the perfect backdrop, you can take some steps to project your style through a camera lens.
SIMPLIFY, THEN BEAUTIFY
REFLECT YOUR STYLE, NOT YOUR SCREEN First and foremost, avoid reflective surfaces behind you while video chatting. Mirrors are the biggest offender of projecting your screen back into your camera, but windows and shiny metal decor items can create problems by reflecting light and creating a glare. Cabinets with glass doors can also contribute, and the simplest solution is to open the doors and show off the cabinet’s insides. It’s a great excuse to rework and refresh those shelves and show off your favorite pieces.

Now that pesky reflections are taken care of, it’s time for the fun. Bringing your style into your space without creating a distracting backdrop is all about editing. This is the same technique we use at the store to show off our goodies. If you’re working with shelves, one of our (sometimes controversial) methods is to turn around books to create a neutral canvas for styled items to pop against. While this is not a method loved by all (which I understand; I too adore colorful books!), it creates a quiet backdrop that still looks beautiful. Sans shelves, a gallery wall can create a stunning visual, as well. A display of art can be full of texture and depth without overwhelming your space. Stick with canvases for less glare.

LET THERE BE LIGHT There’s a reason so many selfie sessions take place in the car: all that great natural light. If you have a space in your home with fabulous natural light (and space to work), make it your go-to Zoom spot. If you can, avoid sitting right in front of a window, regardless of whether the window is to your front or back. Sunny days can make your screen hard to see, and backlighting can make you hard to see for your workmates. Of course, we love lamps when natural light is not an option; just try to avoid placing them too close to your camera. Practice makes perfect, so don’t be discouraged if your first attempt at the perfect video setting doesn’t pan out – it is easy to fix.
