HOW LANDSCAPING CAN PREVENT BASEMENT FLOODING PAUL F. P. POGUE | ANGIE’S LIST
You can take many steps within your basement itself to deal with floods, leaks and other water intrusions. But the single best basement waterproofing measure is to keep water from getting near your basement in the first place. Landscaping is your first and most effective line of defense against a flooded basement. Consider these steps to ease up the water pressure. A landscaping professional can help you sort out your options and recommend the best steps.
GRADE YOUR LAWN IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION You want water flowing away from your house rather than toward it. If the slope of your lawn directs water toward your home, water will pool up around the foundation or basement. Eventually, that kind of water pressure finds a way in. Professional landscapers can turn yard grading into an appealing visual feature.
For instance, they might dig a dry creek in the yard and fill it with river rock or cobblestones. This bisects the yard and flows water around the house instead of toward it.
PAY ATTENTION TO WATER PATHS IN YOUR YARD During heavy rain, watch closely to note where water floods or stands. Anywhere you can see water pooling up, you need to resolve. These pools can alert you to specific problems, such as a sump pump that doesn’t run far enough away or gutters that don’t drain properly.
MAKE SURE YOUR GUTTERS WORK PROPERLY Hire a gutter cleaner at least twice a year to keep gutters clean. Overflowing gutters are among the biggest culprits for basement flooding. They deposit large amounts of water right next to the edge and cause pooling. Additionally, make sure your downspouts are directed away from the house so that water is dropped a good distance away from the home. Professionals recommend at least 4 to 6 feet. If you have room, longer is even better.
LEAVE A GAP BETWEEN MULCH AND SIDING
USE GRASS BARRIERS TO REDIRECT FLOODWATERS
The same qualities that make mulch so effective at protecting soil can also damage your home, especially with wood and vinyl siding. Moisture can wick up from the mulch and begin to rot any siding it’s in contact with. Allow a 6-inch gap between mulch and siding.
This is the opposite of grading in a way — build up sections of your yard with grass or natural barriers in order to create a path for water to drain neatly from the yard. This is tricky work, so rely on a landscaping expert to help you figure out the best way to do it.

Not all that long ago, managing your home network’s security didn’t involve much more than installing an antivirus program on your PC. If only it were still so simple. It’s no longer just about protecting the computer on which you may be working from home and the laptops the kids may be using as online school starts. Odds are good you’ve got a few other internetconnected devices around the house — phones, tablets, game consoles, maybe a “smart” TV or thermostat or refrigerator or light bulb or kid’s toy or security camera or video-streaming gadget or voice-activated digital valet. The average U.S. home now has 11 such devices, according to Deloitte, many of which are vulnerable to hacking. If you don’t want cyber cat burglars traipsing across them, potentially spreading malware or ransomware as they go, you’ll want to secure your entire home network. WHAT ARE THE RISKS? Home networks are a major target for cybercriminals, who use innocuous smart gadgets as stepping stones to loot data from PCs and phones. Or they may co-opt these simpler devices into much larger “botnets” that can be used to wreak havoc across the internet. On average, one in three internet connections from home networks is made

through a device other than a computer or phone, so there’s a lot of opportunity for mischief if you don’t lock your virtual windows to the networked world. You can do it yourself, but that can be a lot of work, and the potential consequences of any mistakes could be significant. For most people, it makes better sense to pay for a network-protection service, whether offered by your internet provider or another business. HOW DOES THIS WORK? Think of your home network as a bunch of cans tied to one another with strings. Those are all your in-house devices and the data they share with one another. Now picture each of those cans tied to thousands of other strings outside your home. They are data connections your devices routinely make to other devices on the global internet. It’s beyond our capacity to constantly monitor all those connections. We need help. A good network-security service sets up firewalls to block unwanted data traffic, but it doesn’t stop there. Since firewalls are imperfect, it will also monitor network traffic using artificial intelligence to detect unusual patterns. It keeps an eye on both your devices and malicious internet domains, alerting you to potential threats and blocking suspicious websites.

Typically, you’ll be able to configure your security and respond to alerts from a laptop or phone. Providers let you block unauthorized users and websites from connecting to your home gadgets. Parents can also often use these services to set rules on the websites kids can visit and limits on screen time. HOW MUCH DOES THIS COST? IS IT WORTH IT? Internet providers now frequently offer security suites if you rent your modem or router from them. From Comcast, it costs $14 a month. Verizon charges fiber-optic FiOS subscribers $25 a month but provides it for free with its premium gigabit plan. If you recently bought your own router, security may come as a free trial and then a subscription. Or you can buy a separate service or standalone security appliance. Figure on paying about $100 a year. Philpott says he’s personally happy to pay a little extra for the peace of mind. I’M NOT AFRAID OF TINKERING. WHAT CAN I DO MYSELF? You’re going to need to roll up your sleeves and get educated if you want to harden your home network’s security on your own. Even then, if you do any kind of sensitive work at home, it probably pays to shell out for extra protection.

The weather is starting to cool off, and in any other year, we would all start to move indoors to keep warm. But we’re still in a pandemic, and a lot of us are looking for ways to keep our socially distant gatherings safely outdoors in our backyards, patios and decks when the temperatures start to drop. One popular way to do that: patio and outdoor heaters. You know, the types of warming devices often seen in outdoor-dining and beer-garden settings. They can help heat an outdoor space well into the colder months of the year and make brisk evenings outside just a little more bearable. And as the COVID-19 pandemic continues, consumers are catching on. Online retailers like furniture seller Wayfair have reportedly seen a 70% increase in searches for patio heaters compared with previous years, and ditto for online retail juggernaut Amazon. And they’re not alone. “Throughout the year, we have seen a significant increase in searches and purchases in the patio category as a whole,” says Molly Parker, vice president of category experience at online retailer Overstock.com. “Additionally, we have seen an uptick in outdoor and patio heaters and fire pits.”

So, what are your options when it comes to buying your own patio heater, and what should you look out for when purchasing one? Here is what you need to know: The first thing to consider when getting an outdoor heater: What kind of fuel does it use? Generally, you have three options: • Electric patio heaters plug into standard electrical outlets and use a heating bulb to warm up your outdoor area. They are low-maintenance and convenient, says Lowe’s Home Improvement store manager Janeen DeVillava, and are good for smaller, enclosed spaces. The downside, according to Parker: They require close proximity to an electric outlet and can be affected by power outages.

Aside from fuel options, another thing to look for is the style of patio heater, which generally breaks down into mounted or hanging, tabletop and standalone heaters (plus fire pits, but that’s another article). Mounted and hanging outdoor heaters attach to a ceiling or wall and stay in place, so they’re more permanent solutions. This style is often electric and better for smaller spaces. Tabletop heaters are more compact and may come in electric or propane gas versions. Generally, they’re more portable and better suited to heating a smaller area, like an outdoor dining table or seating area.
• Propane-powered outdoor heaters use propane from tanks like those attached to your standard gas-powered grill, and they heat up relatively quickly compared with electric heaters. They’re also a little more portable and flexible, as they don’t need to plug into anything. They do, however, sometimes require some assembly, and, as DeVillava says, they are best suited for “well-ventilated outdoor decks and patios.”

When paint is applied in a few carefully selected spots around your home, the effect can be just as dramatic — if not more so — than repainting the entire room. Especially if you choose a high-contrast color, even a small pop of paint can have a big impact. If you want the most stunning result for the lowest cost (and who doesn’t?), try repainting one of the spots below. Even better news: Each of these mini painting projects can likely be accomplished in an afternoon. PAINT THE BANISTER Making over your staircase can drastically change the look of your home, especially if it’s the first thing guests see when they walk in the door. Rather than attempting to paint the entire room or the entire staircase, consider painting just the banister. This project will require less painter’s tape than repainting the stair risers, and
