Liminality

(from the Latin word limen), meaning “a threshold”

Border zones are guarded urban areas, usually having little building activity. Despite their neglected presence, border zones can be potentially suitable for cultural and social mingling by means of architectural intervention. Spaces that house events of culture and art, or spaces used for cultural education for example inevitably transform into public venues that connect participants and users coming from different backgrounds or cultures. Respectively such spaces are capable of bridging cultures, removing boundaries, establishing community spirit and creating collective memories.

CONTINUITY of ground floor activities

NEIGHBORS 01 Lefkoşa has an unique and modest architecture. Most of the time you’ll find yourself in the narrow street of the residential area. These streets are used as garden of houses, children’s playgorund or places which neighbors can socialize.

The main concern of the project is that not to block ‘street life’.So, the ground floor level was designed as empty floor with extra high ceiling. The empty ground floor provides both a square for students and continuation of public activities at ground floor level. This square includes a cafe, fitness center and community space that is capable of supporting film screenings and other events.

The project site is surrounded with attached two/three-storey houses. In order to provide enough distance with the adjacent buildings, the academy buildings was designed as ‘packaged rectangular prism’ without any projection.

DESIGN 02 The building is oriented towards the historical church which is İn South direction, so that all visitors and students can get the best view of Greek-Cypriot,which reminds them that they are part of the border. Main structural tubes also serves as vertical circulation cores. They are only connections between ground floor and upper floors. All circulation on ground floor level was designed according to the these tubes. All streets coming from surrounding environment were intersected at the points where the tubes stand on. In that way,‘street’ life was kept and sustained.

I preferred to use traditional grid system to organize the given dense program for upper floors. The grid was deformed at ground floor level,so that people move comfortably. Cyprus has a hot and humid climate. The deformation of traditional grid system also provides aerodynamic volumes which help to direct wind. So, to get rid of humidity,I used the deformed grid.

LOUVER The louver system articulate itself through the circulation in the building by the help of extreme change in densities. High Density Medium Density Low Density

Single width louvers system : The single width does not provide the 3-dimensionality of the multi-width system, but performs slightly better. Multi-width Low Density : Low density requires wider louvers,and does not provide the proper visual interruptions for certain functions.

Multi-with Medium Density: Medium density allows for large fluctuation in louver spacing.

Multi-width High Density: The high density is read more as a surface instead of a system of components.

FACADE Since Cyprus has quite hot climate,facades were generated according to interior needs. The louvers change density at specific points on the facade based on programmatic conditions; Classrooms have higher density while common spaces like exhibition areas and canteen, have lower density providing clearer views.

The main goal of the project was to create a space that triggers the feeling of beauty and make people feel ‘being Mediterranean’ with the help of light, shadow and material use. In this project common/local Mediterranean materials are used;the most significant one is tulle fabric covering the main structural column lattices. Tulle fabric prevents insects ,allow ingress of wind and remove the boundary between ‘inside’ and ‘outside’

STRUCTURE Cyprus has unique material and architectural understanding, which is result of hot climate. I preferred to use these local features in my design. The interior slab finishes are plywood ,while exterior skin is made of wooden boards ; allowing air flow through the circulation areas in the building. Roof color is preferred as white,absorbing less sunlight, staying cooler in the sun and transmitting less heat into the building

Main intention was to create an empty ground floor level allowing complete visibility and transparency to the surrounding community at ground floor level. Hence, the building construction is made of steel to increase span length between columns. Sendai Mediatheque building by Toyo Ito was analyzed in order to apply similar system to my structural design. The structural column lattices are independent of the facade and increase in diameter from ground floor to the highest floor.

CONSTRUCTION Process as a subtitle of ‘sustainability’

Project site is surrounded by modest,attached two-three storey houses. Hence, in order to minimize the disturbance would be given to neighbors during the construction process, off-site construction was chosen. In addition to that, all roads to reach the project site does not exceed 5 meters width which put a limit on construction vehicles that can reach to the site. So , the steel structural members were produced in factories and assemble on the

site.

a Re-defined Public Space Design In this project, our design focus was ‘transportation ’. Transportation is one of the most debated topics in the agenda of municipalities at present. The notoriously increasing traffic problem in major crowded cities as well as the high rate of mortal traffic accidents on highways have made rail transportation a more preferable, quick and safe system of transportation in Turkey lately. Fast trains that operates in between Ankara-Istanbul and Ankara-Sivas are already planned. The establishment of fast trains as an agent of social welfare on the other hand requires station facilities that are not only equipped with technically advanced infrastructures but also designed to accommodate increasingly more crowds who might need various urban services during their movement.

DESIGN IDEA The new station building was designed at the same level with the previous one. Hence, the railways were carried from the original level to 6m below.

This project focus on reinterpretation of Ankara fast train Station which is planned to be built on a site located behind the existing Ankara Central Railway Station.

The slope rate of passenger train ways and goods train ways were regulated according to the rules, which gives its form to the building.

The project idea started from connecting two sides of the city, which is separated by railways. Bridge like building was chosen as the way to realize this idea.

SOLAR PANELS Programs Accommodation part of the building,which is like a tail, was analyzed in Generative Design Studio. I designed used in movable solar panels and louvers on the facades. design process Rhinoceros Panels,which are located on the ceiling of accommodation part, respond differently for each hour in a day. T-splines They change their direction and angle according to the location of the sun in order to get maximum benefit. Ecotect Analysis Grasshopper Additionally, solar panels,which are located on windows of accommodation part, have openings on their

surfaces changing their dimensions according to interior shadow level.

Accommodation part consists of hostel, hotel and staff housing. This part was located far away from the train facilities as much as possible so as to prevent noise transmission. Inner courtyards were provided for the residents.

has a very unique history, thus although the building (and surrounding buildings) is being renovated, the memories shall never be forgotten. Hence, the existing historical station building preserved and transformed into additional part of the new railway hub. Since a transportation building gives the first impression to visitors, It has always been designed as buildings reflecting their periods. Even,most of the transportation buildings have become symbols of the cities. Since the building has public facilities,according to the given program, like cinemas,gastronomical spaces,shopping areas etc. ,It should have gathering feature in the city. It serves not only to foreign visitors,but also to natives. So the main goal of the design was to create an ‘iconic building’ in the city. 3D PRINT MODEL Physical model was made using 3D Printer that allowed me to express the sleekness of the form. Except transparent surfaces (windows), whole white concrete shell body of the building was symbolized by 3d print ceramic material (figure 03).Floor slab (showing in Figure 01) and surrounding environment was made by laser cuting.

The Recuperator Reclamate land from deserts Design Jury The competition is an investigation on the public and private space and the role of the individual and the collective in the creation of a dynamic and adaptive vertical community. It is also a response to the exploration and adaptation of new habitats and territories based on a dynamic equilibrium between man and nature – a new kind of responsive and adaptive design capable of intelligent growth through the self-regulation of its own systems. There are no restrictions in regards to site, program or size. The objective is to provide maximum freedom to the participants to engage the project without constraints in the most creative way. What is a skyscraper in the 21st century? What are the historical, contextual, social, urban, and environmental responsibilities of these mega-structures?

The Recuperator // definition

At our modern era, deserts cover 33% of the world land area. With their low-moisture air quality, these lands inclined to infect surrounding transition areas which can defined as corrosive/ terrestrial land around hot deserts and also tundras around cold deserts. Transition lands are totally or partially lost their qualified soil for agriculture, which limits agriculture with fallow. Desert has their own independent and strange habitat. This habitat shelters limited being able to live with limited food and arid conditions. In some of these conditions humans are part of the ecosystem. With respect to growing pattern of deserts it is a fact that these conditions are ecologically insufficient and not suitable for any kind of creature. In addition to ecological disadvantages of growing desert lands around the world we could also add that deserts are far away from being a part of global production network. Today it is a fact that regional sufficiency is not arguable. Agriculture and stock farming are major food industries that produce locally for global demand. In such network, deserts self sufficiency is not considerable even we could tag these areas as low productive zones. This quality of the desert is another critical point to add its ecological feature.

01 The Recuperator’s mechanism based on ancient wind towers of Persia (Wind catcher, Malqaf in Egypt). This modern typology of higher-scale version of wind towers has same principle of below ground air circulation to cool circulated air.

Concept 02 Purposed ecological response could simply defined as soil reclamation at the edge between desert and non-desert* zones. Like an infected tissue aid, predefined buffer zone which includes areas from both infected and reliable surface enhanced. Qualities of transition zone and desert would mixed in this buffer zone, however intervention by skyscraper would create intended mix of the qualities which leads buffer zone to become non-desert* area.

For given problem definition; moisture control, airstream control an soil reclamation are proposed steps. Airstream from desert to non-desert* area is limited/ controlled by aerodynamic design/fluid mechanics of the tower. The controlled air is moistened and directed backwards. Range of the impact defines radius of the buffer zone.

Bioclimatic intervention is the main act of The Recuperator to prevent desert growth in terms of land reclamation. Aimed intervention of The Recuperator was achieved by water injection system, wind tunnels, cooling and moisture control system and air exhausts. In addition to mechanical system, skyscraper includes agricultural research facilities, residential units (for researchers and co-workers of agriculture/food industry), eco-tourism center, energy stations and lastly mechanical and technical substructure. To conclude, habitable part of the skyscraper owns spaces which are necessary to manage such system but also needs workforce. Wind tunnel network could be defined as workforce/ substructure of the system. Sudden direction change of incoming wind to wind tunnel triggers the process. Air is cooled and moisturized with surrounding water storage vessels. The collected air is transferred through core part of the skyscraper to exhaust fans at the top part. Air transfer also helps interior cooling as a necessity to success room conditions at habitable area. Fans placed at the air outlets strengthen flow of moisturized air. Flow capacity of the system is also supported with formal dilution. The effective radius of buffer zone is highly related with flow range of humid air. The Recuperator’s network based on reclamation strategy would create invaluable effect for long term intervention process.

PUBLIC DESIGN The project aims to show how even 150 m² area can be used to enable the activation of places and spaces within the town center that have been previously underused. Dome formation was chosen because of its structural and gathering features. It was designed to be used anywhere (but mainly public squares) and for a variety of purposes. It can be used as Theatre, Recital hall, Exhibition space, Performance center Coffee Information center etc. with a little change in interior design. This prefabricated structure is constructed with a folded aluminium shell that opens and closes like a fan with the help of pushing force of a human.

DISASSEMBLED As the benefit of using off-site architecture is to simplify the elements,the concept behind this design was to divide it in basic components that will require a process of few assemblies on site. The extremely lightweight, portable structure’s working system was tested in the smaller scale by using origami cardboards. Minimum and maximum volumes that the structures occupy were calculated. According to these data this temporary structure can be picked up by man power and with a truck.

CONCEPT The folded structures were created to perform multiple functions at different public venues: They have been designed to be used anywhere and to accommodate a variety of events; from serving coffee, to mini concert hall, to an exhibition space.

mini CONCERT HALL Its dome formation makes the structure be able to have multi plan organization. This is a sample organization of traditional / minimized recital hall .

EXHIBITION Another plan organization example have been designed for temporary exhibitions in public squares. The intriguing idea of a labyrinth as an exhibition place was applied to get maximum surface area in 150m². These partition walls can be built by easily accessible and creative materials like plastic bottles, recycled ropes or even cardboards.

Design Main goal is to analyze herbacous plant behaviors under certain degrees of light level or brute force. At natural process of phototropism, the sun works as positive attractor geometrically. (Biologically it works as negative attractor for growing enzymes.) Haptotropism or behavior of plant against physical forces analyzed under cylindrical formation. This force has permanent effects on some plants (Mostly ligneous plants.)

The project aims to ease the pedestrian movement on the one of the problematic spots in METU campus where the vehicular traffic cuts across the student’s pathways. Besides the structural and constructional issues,the context is constituent of this assignment.

** bridge while working as a street light

I designed a bus stop and a pedestrian bridge adapted according to the original topography between cafeteria and the stadium. The structures are covered by photovoltaic panel coverings. Solar and photovoltaic panels on the surfaces provide electricity to the structures. With the help of this system,bridge facade can be used as both lighting purpose during nigh-time and as billboard to inform students of events in the campus,while the bus stop facade gives information about departure and arrivals.

KINETIC STATIC

‘Bridge’ and ‘bus stop’ themes conflict with each other. A bridge always plays host kinetic activities like walking. Opposite to bridge concept, a station usually has static motion like waiting. Forms of the structures derived from this ‘kinetic-static’ idea. The bridge has a fluid geometry reflecting its grounded idea while the bus stop formation mainly based on statically stability calculations. Additionally, fluidity of bridge structure matches with the human movement behavior; There is no sharp change in geometry of the bridge in just the same way as human movement. Through design process, sustainability concept has been analyzed and integrated to each phase ; CONSTRUCTION The structure has been designed to be built off-site and rolled into place once the foundations have been completed, meaning the road will only have to be closed for one night to install the bridge. MATERIAL/SYSTEM These structures has been designed to make structures multi-purposed while saving money and energy. With the help of photovoltaic cells the structures becomes an experience of light and information during night time.

Design Idea To be dreamer as a function: The topic of ‘Function’ was analyzed through the design process. The most significant function of vertical corridor is ‘to make people dream’. To emphasize on that there can be different realities and parallel universes is the most important goal of the project.

Design Idea The idea of vertical corridor was based on the theory of Minkowski Space which is a mathematical physical alternative space setting including time and parallel realities. This space vision, developed after the theory of relativity, is the source of inspiration for modeling transitions between future, past and parallel realities. This space editing make people in İzmir feel the existence of alternative realities ,alternative spaces and surprises. ’Forum’, ‘Vertical exhibition’ and ‘passage’ are the three main usage areas of the pavilion.

01 FORUM,urban hammock: Forum is a circle where public can come together. The circle is covered by knitted manilla ropes, which reminds us a huge hammock, comfortable and quiet urban spaces are rather valuable. The ‘huge’ hammock is not multi-functional space. It can give only two possibilities to people. The first one is to lay on it comfortably and feel relax. The second one is to communicate with it. Although this calm space is sometimes surrounded with design events and openings for vertical exhibition, it’s main function is to be a communication and discussion space for the public. 02 VERTICAL EXHIBITION: It focuses on exhibiting design products. Hence, it does not have an ordinary exhibiton space order. To see 3d objects in the exhibiton from every view, transparent spheres were designed as display units. To make people feel the space, the transparent spheres were hanged at different levels. 03 PASSAGE: This transitional circle is the first place where this ‘dreamer’ form, with its unusual typology, and people interact with each other. Instead of passing through an ordinary passage, visitors pass the place by climbing and slipping on the hyperboloid surface formed by knitted manilla ropes.

Production - Reuse

In İzmir Aliağa Çandarlı gulf shipyard zone, disassembly ships to reuse has been carried on from 1976. Removing the ships that complete their life cycle from the market and putting the ones having high efficiency level and decreasing risks are natural result of the technological process .In addition to that this ‘green industry’ is unique economical tool for the connection of İzmir to the sea, it is a kind of industry helping the ecological balance. Vertical corridor project was designed with the intention of being part of this industry. For this purpose, the manilla ropes, which is one of the material hard to reuse, were chosen as the main design material of the project. Except steel structures and slabs,all surfaces are formed by recycled knitted ropes.

Aim of the competition: The competition aims to rearrange the university campus and the relations with its environment regarding the existing order and the protected forest zone. The existing campus is dominated by asphalt roads which makes the pedestrian circulation difficult. The campus is composed of separated faculties as a result of absence of order. Hence,the main purpose of the competition owners was to get a sustainable campus design enriching social relations.

to be an University campus as part of CITY and NATURE: D端zce University Konuralp Campus is located in the Bolu Mountains as close to the city center. So its relations with both nature and the city has been analyzed through the design process. This design does not propose an one-way relationship network. It builds campuss/ city/nature relationships which is continuously developing and feeding each other. The existing campus has an undefined character because of its interior roads as extension of highways surrounding the campus and non-regulated green zones. The premise of the project was to solve these problems ; PUBLIC AXIS allows a relationship to be formed between the urban fabric and the social funcitons of the university (cultural center,stadium, sport zones etc.) GREEN AXIS combines these public activities and academic life.

Existing Situation: Introverted and untied building fabric,undefined common spaces Result: Absence of common design language,low programmability level of campus settlement, to be a ‘faculty student’ as more dominant than to be a ‘university student’. Solution: Reorganizing building fabric as emphasis on facts below 1. main route_academic alley 2. interaction +entrance+informative signs, stations 3. joints_centers_hubs 4. open meeting areas, shared green zones 5. summer campus/winter campus usage 6. signs showing certain distances and creating referencereference marks marks 7. use of existing formation/natural and passive architecture landscapelandscape architecture 8. hobby gardens, planting areas for students Valley bottoms optimize their micro-climate by working as air ventilators. Because of its nature, these places serve as water basin/collector as well. That can be used for both recreative forms and as part of drainage system. Situation: ecological context and sustainability Solution: technologies used in buildings and material selection from environment friendly materials which minimize fossil fuel consumption during production process | all new buildings was designed so as to be able to collect water/use gray water /decrease heat transfer/have natural ventilation system especially for warm facades, which decrease the need of mechanical air conditioning systems | unfolding of the exterior spaces into the interior spaces with the help of interior courtyards and large openings on the ground | sustainability of interior climate as much as possible | in addition to solar gaining system, underground heat insulation supported with cogeneration hybridization

DESIGN The project site is located on 13.419 m² land southeast side of İstanbul. ‘Fikirtepe, located in the Kadıköy district on the Asian side of İstanbul, is a workingclass neighborhood with a high percentage of informally built houses, multi-floor buildings and shabby single-story homes .

DESIGN PROCESS ‘Fikirtepe is the site of a major urban transformation initiative. In Fikirtepe alone, 50,000 housing projects are expected to be built in the next three years, generating an economy of around 40,000 billion Turkish Liras’ It was a residential design proposal prepared for the clients. They wished to build an attractive building in such competitive urban renewal project site. I was part of this project from the design phase to the final stage which lasted 4 weeks. The site is boarded by an arterial road and three streets other sides. The site slopes up 5 meters from the arterial road to the opposite/parallel street. So a podium with entry level from the road was provided in order to connect the upper level and the lowest part of the site. All commercial- social functions were placed the podium while keeping residents’ privacy. Top of the podium is used as green zone including open swimming pool. The project site is going to be surrounded North-South-East by high rise buildings in the future. Hence, form research and site analysis was done according to the future planning. It was an significant experience for me. Differently from previous projects,I participated, together with the project manager, to the calculation phase for the municipality. CAMLICA HILL

PANELLING All facades were designed as glass panel covering that some of them can be opened and closed by each individual unit. Transparency of the panels changes according to their function. There are 3 transparency level Transparent : (to allow more natural light to enter the building while keeping the facade harmony) Semi Transparent: (to provide shade) Opaque: (to keep privacy) The main principles of the panelling are: -To increase panelling density from the bottom floor to the roof so as to be able to get more sunlight into lower floors inside -North facades have less panelling density compared to south facades -Panel incline comes from the dominant inclined edge of each facade

PANELLING The panelling system of this building serves two functions; 1-operable shading device 2-non-operable shading device Operability feature provides ability to control interior lighting ratio where non-operability keeps common design language of the residences.

DESIGN LANGUAGE The main working space does away with unnecessary partitions in favour of an open plan layout incorporating four stand-alone work stations. Instead of using partitions, other directive components was used in the design like different floor finish materials, fluid lighting elements etc. Main aim was to create well arranged office organization and hierarchy while giving powerful messages to the clients.

MATERIAL Main aim was to create well arranged office organization and make clients trust the company. Hence it is a leasing company, main messages that should be given to the customers were ‘safety’ and ‘power’. We aimed to achieved these results through the use of bare concrete walls, light joinery, silk carpeting and linear/curvilinear focused lighting that replaces the uniform illumination found in typical offices. Materials, such as the plywood used to create socialization spaces’ floors (kitchen,meeting rooms,waiting area)were chosen because of its easy-to-clean feature, low cost, ecological impact and to break the darkness of the interior. Furniture featuring textured materials such as velvet, leather, wood and steel provides a tactile element in each of the administration rooms. Vertical plantation on kitchen wall and waiting area have been selected with the intention of creating a fresh atmosphere.
