Gene Cubbison joined NBC 7 San Diego in 1983 after reporting stints at KFMB-TV, the San Diego Union, San Diego Daily Transcript, and San Diego Independent. Mr. Cubbison’s coverage experience has included one-on-one interviews with Presidents H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Texas Gov. George W. Bush during his campaign for President; four national political conventions; three major earthquakes; two jetliner crashes; two Super Bowls; and several catastrophic brush fires and floods. Mr. Cubbison has been recognized with numerous awards including citations from the San Diego Press Club (including Harold Keen Award for Lifetime Contributions), Golden Mic/Southern California, Emmy/NATAS Pacific Southwest Chapter, San Diego County Bar Association, and Society of Professional Journalists/San Diego. He received a BA in Communication from Stanford University.

Mark Vitner Managing Director and Senior Economist Wells Fargo Securities, LLC
Mark Vitner is a Managing Director and Senior Economist at Wells Fargo, responsible for tracking U.S. and regional economic trends. Based in Charlotte, he also writes for the company’s Monthly Economic Outlook report, the Weekly Economic & Financial Commentary; and provides regular updates on the housing markets, commercial real estate, regional economies, and inflation. Mr. Vitner joined Wachovia (then First Union) in 1993. Before that, he spent nine years as an economist for Barnett Banks in Jacksonville, Florida. Mr. Vitner’s commentary has been featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, and many other publications. Originally from Atlanta, Mr. Vitner earned his BBA in economics from the University of Georgia, an MBA from the University of North Florida, and has completed further graduate work in economics at the University of Florida. He also completed the National Association of Business Economics (NABE) Advanced Training in Economics program at Carnegie Mellon University. Mr. Vitner is a member of the National Association of Business Economists and co-founded their Charlotte chapter, The Charlotte Economics Club. He serves as a distinguished lecturer and practitioner at the University of Georgia. Mr. Vitner currently chairs the Economic Advisory Council for the California Chamber of Commerce and serves as the Chief Economist for the North Carolina CCIM (Certified Commercial Investment Member).

Josh Williams President and Co-Founder BW Research
Josh Williams, President and Co-Founder of BW Research, has been leading and directing applied economic research studies for almost 15 years. His work typically uses complex research methodologies to find data to reveal the strengths and weaknesses of different policies, strategies and programs. His work is also focused on supporting decision makers with evidence-based conclusions and recommendations. Mr. Williams is responsible for directing economic and workforce research, public opinion studies, and market research studies. Prior to founding BW Research in 2006, Mr. Williams was Director of Research for another West Coast-based research firm. While there, Mr. Williams directed or supervised over 200 research projects over a sixyear period. With a passion and deep understanding of applied research, Mr. Williams has been a keynote speaker at several conferences and summits. Mr. Williams received his BA in International Economics from George Washington University and his MA in Economics from California State University, Long Beach. Mr. Williams also serves as the Applied Research Director of EARI (Economic Advancement Research Institute). When he is not actively engaged in applied research, he can be found coaching at the Carlsbad Thunder Rugby club and trying to figure out a way to get some time in the ocean.

Michael McDonald Developer NORTH CITY
Michael McDonald has developed and managed commercial real estate since 1979 and has completed in excess of 2 million square feet of office, industrial, and retail developments. Mr. McDonald received his BA degree from Stanford University and his MBA degree from Harvard University. Prior to coming to San Diego in the early Seventies, he had extensive work experience in Mexico and South America as a financial analyst for a developmental investment banking firm. In 1979, Mr. McDonald formed Greenwald/McDonald Corporation and developed and managed commercial real estate in San Diego and south Riverside Counties. Then in 1992, he formed The McDonald Group to continue these development activities with particular emphasis in the San Marcos. Mr. McDonald co-founded Urban Villages San Marcos, LLC in 2006 with Gary Levitt to develop NORTH CITY, a 110 acre mixed use development between SR 78 and CSUSM.
Matt Weaver Principal, Land Sales Lee & Associates – North San Diego County
Matt Weaver specializes in the sale of land properties in various stages of development throughout San Diego and Riverside Counties. Mr. Weaver has been with Lee & Associates, since February of 2003, and achieved partner status within three years of his start date. He finished as top producer at Lee & Associates in 2013, and has sold over $1 billion in total sales throughout his career. Mr. Weaver earned his undergraduate degree from the University of San Diego, while also a member of the football and lacrosse teams. He also earned his MBA from University of San Diego in 2004. Mr. Weaver is a member of ULI, BIA and NAIOP, and a member of the Solana Beach Chamber of Commerce. He works mostly representing owners of land in the sale of their property to public and private builders and developers.
Rita Brandin Senior Vice President and Development Director Newland Real Estate Group
Rita Brandin began her career in real estate in Atlanta, Georgia, where she worked for John Portman & Associates. Following the Portman Companies, she worked for the Rouse Company for 17 years, managing and developing regional shopping centers across the country. Ms. Brandin relocated to Las Vegas in 1999 to direct the $450 million dollar redevelopment and expansion of a 2 million square-foot regional mall on the Las Vegas Strip known as The Fashion Show. In 2006, she accepted a position with Newland Communities to direct activities for Symphony Park, a 61acre mixed-use project in downtown Las Vegas under an agreement with the City of Las Vegas, as landowner and Newland as Development Manager. Currently, Ms. Brandin is a member of Newland Real Estate Group’s senior leadership team and is responsible for directing the planning and entitlement activities for Newland Sierra, LLC, a future 2,000 acre master plan community in North County.

Russell T. Valone II President and Chief Executive Officer Market Pointe Realty Advisors
Russell Valone has been an expert in economic real estate market analysis for the Southern California housing market for more than three decades. Mr.Valone is a consistent contributor to the real estate sections of the San Diego Union Tribune, the Los Angeles Times, the San Diego Daily Transcript, the Wall Street Journal, and many other media outlets. Mr. Valone is a principal real estate consultant, specializing in residential projects, ranging from infill high-density residential projects to standard subdivisions to large scale master planned communities. In recent years, as the redevelopment activity has exploded in the San Diego downtown marketplace, Mr. Valone has become a specialist in the low-to-high-rise infill condominium and rental developments, working on numerous high-density projects in San Diego, Los Angeles, Long Beach and Orange County. Mr. Valone has dedicated much of his time to serving the Building Industry and has served numerous years as a member of the Board of Directors for the San Diego County Building Industry Association (BIA).

Alison St John has been a voice on KPBS Radio since 1989, and has served as anchor, producer, TV feature reporter, radio news reporter and is now KPBS' North County Bureau Chief. Ms. St John covered the metro beat during the critical period of the San Diego City pension crisis. She has also covered San Diego issues ranging from education to health care, and she has covered land use issues extensively, looking at the challenges of meeting a growing population while preserving community character, and developing a better transportation system to meet environmental concerns. Ms. St John was born in Tanzania, brought up in Scotland, and earned her degree in Psychology and Sociology from Durham University in England. Ms. St John’s features have won numerous awards from the San Diego Press Club, the Society of Professional Journalists, the Associated Press TV and Radio Association, and the California Golden Mike Awards.
Thomas Capizzi Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer DJO Global
Thomas Capizzi joined DJO Incorporated as Senior Vice President, Human Resources in July 2007. From 2001 to July 2007, Mr. Capizzi served as Vice President, Worldwide Human Resources & Administration for Magellan GPS, a Consumer Electronics company. Between 1997 and 2001, he served as Corporate Vice President, Human Resources for McKesson and then as Vice President, Human Resources, and Chief Administrative Officer for PCTEL, a publicly held Telecommunications and Modem Technology company. Mr. Capizzi has held various other Human Resources Management positions in companies such as Charles Schwab, Genentech, Quantum Computers, PepsiCo and The Hertz Corporation. He has extensive knowledge of leadership development, change management, learning and organization effectiveness, mergers and acquisitions and talent management. Mr. Capizzi received his undergraduate degree in Psychology and Philosophy from Cathedral College/St. John University and his post graduate work in Organizational Development from the New School.
Renato Alesiani Chief Executive Officer Wave Crest Hotels & Resorts
Born, raised and educated in Rome, Renato Alesiani graduated from the National Institute for Tourism and from the Italian Artillery Officer Academy. He has extensive experience in luxury, high-end hospitality, cruise line, and senior housing environments. His background includes working for prestigious brands such as Cunard Cruise Line and Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts. Prior to joining Wave Crest as Chief Executive Officer in March 2011, Mr. Alesiani worked for Àegis Senior Living for seven years, where his final role was Vice President of operations. As CEO of Wave Crest Hotels & Resorts, Mr. Alesiani supervises all business aspects of the Hilton Garden Inn Carlsbad Beach and the new Hilton Carlsbad Oceanfront Resort and Spa, both located along the Coast Highway in Carlsbad. Wave Crest employs around 300 talented and diverse associates. An avid traveler, Mr. Alesiani has visited over 110 countries and speaks several languages. He currently lives in Carlsbad with his wife and two children.
Dr. Sunny Cooke Superintendent and President MiraCosta College
Dr. Sunny Cooke began her tenure as the Superintendent/President of MiraCosta Community College District on January 2, 2015. From 2007 to 2014, Dr. Cooke served as President of Grossmont College in El Cajon. She was awarded a Ph. D in Biology at Georgetown University and completed a postdoctoral training program at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Dr. Cooke is a founding faculty member of Lone Star-Montgomery College in north Houston. Since 2012, she represented all of the San Diego and Imperial Counties community colleges on the Workforce Investment Board and is now the liaison with the State Chancellor's Office regarding economic and workforce development efforts at the regional and state level. She is also championing the region’s "Doing What Matters for Jobs and the Economy" campaign, a community college and industry collaboration that aims to close the skills gap.
Melinda Del Toro Vice President, Human Resources ViaSat
Melinda Del Toro earned both a Bachelor and a Master of Arts degree in Communication from San Diego State University. While at SDSU, she was heavily involved in the Speech and Debate team as both a competitor and later as a coach. She also taught courses in public speaking, group dynamics, and argumentation. Ms. Del Toro joined ViaSat in 2001 to bring a focus to learning and employee development. She helped design ViaSat’s robust succession and talent review process, introduced a competency based leadership curriculum and has made employee engagement a part of the ongoing strategic dialogue. Today as Vice President of Human Resources, she leads a talented team of professionals who thrive on impacting the ViaSat employee experience with innovative approaches to everything from learning to wellness and benefits.
Dr. Michael D. Alston Senior Staff Engineer Qualcomm, San Diego
Dr. Michael Alston is a product of the Baltimore City Public Schools with his K-12 education culminating in completion of the “A”-course engineering option at the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. After earning his BSEE at Carnegie-Mellon, and his MSEE at UC-Berkeley, he became a design engineer at M/A-COM Linkabit where he designed and characterized the first Multi-User Viterbi Decoder (rate=1/2, K=7, n=64). Earning a PhDEE at UC San Diego in 1993, Dr. Alston specialized in the hierarchical physical layout design of microchips. After earning an MBA at the Rady School in 2010, the next startup he hired into (Rapid Bridge LLC) was acquired by Qualcomm in 2011. Dr. Alston is now a senior staff engineer in QCT’s Digital Circuit Parallel PHY Group. He serves on the Boards of Gateways Summer School, and University City Community Foundation, and was Qualcomm’s 2013 Volunteer of the Year.
Dr. Jim Hamerly Interim Dean, College of Business Administration California State University San Marcos
Dr. Jim Hamerly is currently the interim dean of the College of Business Administration at Cal State San Marcos. Dr. Hamerly has over 10 years of teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate level, and specializes in undergraduate and graduate-level courses in Entrepreneurship and Intrapreneurship. He also serves on numerous Boards of community service organizations, new ventures, and business incubators. Prior to joining CSUSM, Dr. Hamerly has over 30 years of business experience, 15 as an entrepreneur, 15 doing corporate research and venturing in larger corporations, including senior executive positions at major corporations such as Xerox, Netscape, and AOL TimeWarner. He continues to serve on over a dozen business boards. Dr. Hamerly holds BS, MS, and Ph.D degrees in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering (from MIT, UC Berkeley, and Carnegie Mellon University).
