Multi-purpose vessels (MPPs) are probably the most interesting of all ship types. they are able to handle a wide range of cargoes due to their versatile and complex design. However, their varying operating conditions and complex design make them a challenge to design, build, maintain and operate. Owners and operators of MPPs need partners that understand the complex technical issues involved and can deliver a problem-solving attitude even at the remote locations in which some MPPs operate. DNV has a broad range of services, including classification and advisory services, to assist owners who are planning to build or who are operating MPPs.

Understanding MPP design MPPs are probably the most versatile, but perhaps the most complex of vessels. Such versatility and complexity requires expertise to arrive at the most effective, efficient and flexible design solution – expertise that DNV has developed through years of experience with approval, supervision, and survey. MPPs, due to their versatility and ability to load heavy and large project cargoes, break bulk and unitised cargoes, whether lifted or rolled on board, are by their nature complex. The wide range of cargoes requires vessels with large holds, with cranes – sometimes working in tandem, and some with ramps. Moveable bulkheads that can also function as tween decks, wide deck areas, container suitability and crane capacity are other design characteristics to be considered. In addition, strength characteristics such as tanktop strength, crane pedestals, hatch cover supports and ice strengthening must also be taken into consideration. Such complexity of design requires a classification society which has the technical competence to evaluate and approve new MPP designs. Through our experience with the approval of MPPs and open hatch bulk carriers, we understand the technical complexities at hand and ensure that the most effective, efficient and flexible solutions are delivered.
Typical MPP designs feature long cargo holds with relatively long distances between transverse bulkheads. To ensure safe operations during crane operations and normal sailing conditions, the relative deflection and interaction between cargo hold hatch covers and the slender double side structure needs to be evaluated.
Ranging from class services to the most advanced advisory services, DNV can help you address the technical issues and help to simplify and expedite the design and approval process.
We provide: Advisory services and specification review services at the design stage - ensuring that all factors are considered. Competitive fees – where the total cost of partnering with DNV is low, allowing you to save money.
