Anticipate and reduce future failures Help secure re-licensing Implement causation models to integrate failure modes and operational causes (e.g. safety culture, human performance, asset management) Assist in making sound system, structure and component (SSC) investment decisions Use quantitative leading performance indicators in proactive plant management related to both management systems and SSC performance.
Nuclear Waste Storage We have been conducting research for the Hanford tank reservation, which contains approximately 50 million gallons of liquid radioactive waste. The waste is stored in 177 underground double-shelled storage tanks. Current plans call for treatment and disposal of the waste. While plans and arrangements are being finalized for the treatment and disposal, DNV is conducting ongoing research to better understand the effect of the waste composition on tank integrity risks. We are also helping to establish operational guidelines for extending the operating life of the tanks. As a result of our efforts, the operating companies at the Hanford site have saved several hundred million dollars in operating expenses through waste stream reductions.
Success Stories We have utilized our dynamic research, engineering and risk management approach to successfully help a number of clients manage the life of their nuclear facilities. Following are some examples: Buried Pipe Corrosion With our extensive experience in cathodic protection and pipeline integrity assessment, we have worked with several nuclear utilities assessing their buried pipe infrastructure and made recommendations on system upgrades and modifications. This has included evaluating the underground piping, condenser water boxes, tube sheets, intake structure cofferdams, barge slip, traveling screens, storage tanks, and building and cooling tower foundations. Heat Exchanger Corrosion A nuclear plant was experiencing galvanic corrosion problems with component cooling water heat exchangers. Specifically, carbon steel baffles appeared to have experienced rapid degradation due to galvanic coupling to stainless steel tubulars. Utilizing our understanding of the regulatory constraints and our expertise in materials and corrosion to quantify the extent of the problem, we were able to make a recommendation for alternative materials and design alternatives to mitigate corrosion and extend next generation heat exchanger life.
