Pipeline & Facilities Integrity Management Integrity Assessments

DNV offers a dynamic blend of research science and engineering prowess. We help assure continuous delivery while extending the asset’s life and improving efficiency, safety and productivity. DNV is a single source provider of services that optimize the value of your pipeline throughout its entire life cycle.

Trusted globally since 1864

Integrity Assessments Identify ways in which your asset is changing over time. DNV delivers ways to ease the assessment process while maximizing the quality and the quantity of useful data. We will help develop a complete meaning and understanding of your assessment results. What differentiates DNV from other pipeline assessment companies? First, we maintain a staff of research scientists and integrity engineers who are globally recognized for having largely ‘written the book’ on ILI and DA standards, fracture mechanics, SCC, corrosion and risk. Our staff carries an in-depth range of supporting subject matter expertise (SME) and engineering disciplines in areas to include corrosion, SCC, seamweld integrity issues, fatigue and more. To maximize the applicability of assessment data, we’re staffed with mathematical and statistical experts who can identify trends that provide you with a complete understanding of your pipeline’s integrity.

ILI often generates more questions than answers. DNV maintains an expert staff of ILI specialists who hold a working knowledge of ILI technologies, operations, and analysis. We weave this expertise into our understanding and experience in pipeline operations, engineering, maintenance, codes, standards and recommended practices.

ILI systems audits, qualification, verification Remediation planning, prioritization, dig optimization (pig-and-dig) Data alignment, mining, interpretation Run comparisons - Flexible (as-needed) runcoms for defect growth: Statistical appraisal → Joint-to-Joint → Signal-to-Signal Remaining life / Time-to-failure calculations for threats such as corrosion, cracks (i.e. SCC, HIC, fatigue), mechanical damage, and hard spots DNV’s CorLAS™ Fracture Mechanics Software RSTRENG-like assessments for cracks and corrosion Inspection intervals, regulatory response and strategies Dent / bending strain Pipeline movement / subsidence studies Onsite secondment of qualified integrity engineers Workshops and training Over 150 years of ILI experience

Direct Assessment DNV took active roles in establishing the DA process for corrosion (external and internal) and SCC. Consequently, we impart a working knowledge of all four phases of Direct Assessment, even for the most difficult-to-access pipelines.     

Review of pipeline operating and service failure history Establish test criterion and strategies Identify and assess failure modes Theoretical studies based on previous pressure tests Establish remaining life/time to failure of ‘just surviving’ defects Determine serviceability of the pipeline (post-test) Calculate effects of fatigue as a function of pressure cycling Finite Element Analysis Full scale laboratory testing

Statistical and analytical tools such as Probabilities of Exceedence and Rain Flow Cycle Counts can be used to determine if a predicted threat is truly a failure threat.

Regulatory Support With a near-150 year heritage of managing risk, DNV has generated a tremendous degree of credibility with industry operators and regulators alike. Consultation and representation can be applied in a number of ways. To assist with complex operating/regulatory issues, rationale can be formulated using sound engineering critical assessments for some compliance waivers to more stringent class location requirements, re-assessment intervals, pressure up-rates, change of use methodologies, corrective action orders, and other unique applications. We have the science and engineering competencies to extend asset life while ensuring safe and continuous pipeline operation.
