DNV’s Risk-Informed Decision Making Engage in a course of action by means of a rational thought process. DNV maintains expertise to address both the likelihood and consequence of failure. Calculating Likelihood of Failure
Calculating Consequence of Failure
Establishing a pipeline’s integrity threat probability requires detailed knowledge of the subject matter. DNV carries competence in a wide range of engineering disciplines to address the likelihood component of risk. Whatever the threat, we have on staff globally recognized subject matter experts (SME’s) to develop models to more readily assess the probability of failure.
Risk’s other component, consequence of failure, is addressed by our proprietary software packages which will custom model the effects and impact of potential leaks or ruptures. Our modeling is tailored to the operator’s specific risk assessment matrix and corporate risk management methodologies.
By utilizing decision trees, DNV considers all factors affecting those threats while only those which are applicable to the situation affect the resulting probability. Decision trees are helpful in mapping a categorical description (i.e. not likely, likely, highly likely) or in quantifying probability based on operator-specific failure data.
DNV’s PHAST (Process Hazard Analysis Software Tool) is the world’s leading consequence analysis tool used by governments and industry in over 60 countries. PHAST is the only software to completely model all stages of a gas dispersion plume. PHAST can be used for a number of failure scenarios to include blasts, jet fires, pool fires, toxic gas clouds, and heat radiation.

Risk-Informed Decision Making
Threat assessment for regulated and un-regulated pipelines and facilities.
Software tools to model and measure both the likelihood and consequence of failure.
Decision support systems – Inspection process too much? Too little? Just right?
Pipeline and facilities due diligence – Determine asset’s true fitness-for-service and value.
Risk-based design studies – Validate design specifications, verify asset was built to those design specs.
Computer and laboratory simulations.
Incident investigations – Determine risk potential, measure barriers from loss or near-miss. Benefit from lessons learned.
