The Poles Aren’t Cold Anymore…. but the Artists Are! In January, seventeen artists brought color and warmth to Anchorage during the cold white Alaska winter, by installing about thirty pieces of original art around Town Square Park, the Center for the Performing Arts and surrounding streets. The ideas for Poles are Cold came through brainstorming during our October 2011 AKWS meeting at HugiLewis Studio, where we talked about how to stimulate more community interest in the visual Brush Strokes

Anchorage artist Katie Sevigny will talk about the business of art at our February 8 Members’ Meeting at Sourdough Mining Company. Katie studied art at the Chicago Art Institute and the Academy of Art in Chicago before moving to Haines, Alaska in 1994 as a young adult in search of a better life. Katie and Craig relocated to Anchorage in 2000 and they married in 2002. They now have three children, the youngest of whom was born just last October. Between her growing family and a busy schedule, Katie lives her dream of being a successful artist and runs the Katie Sevigny Studios Art Gallery in Anchorage. Her presentation is bound to be exciting and informative.

THEME: “THIS AND THAT” The Girdwood Center for Visual Arts is hosting a multi-media art show. We are looking for artwork composed of at least two different media. Submissions may be made to the gallery January 25th – February 3rd. The entry fee is $5.00 per piece for non-members and $2.00 per piece for members. The show will be on display February 1st through February 26th. The gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11AM – 4 PM.The show opens with a reception on
February 4th from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the GCVA, next to the Bake

Artist Kesler Woodward will be visiting the Anchorage Museum from Fairbanks for a two day workshop on Sydney Laurence. He will be removing paintings from the gallery walls to look at the backs of some of the paintings. We will also be bringing paintings that are not currently on display out of the vault. This is a great opportunity to learn more about one of Alaska’s most famous artists.
