MAINS '10 C HOSEN FOR NATIONAL P UBLICATION

tudents and parents nationwide know that a critical component of a college application is the essay. A successful college essay can tip the scales in a student’s favor by conveying his or her ability in written expression and the student’s distinct character and personality. The essay Paul Mains ’10 wrote while he was a Senior at Doane Stuart was selected as one of just 8 new additions to the latest edition of Fiske’s Real College Essays That Worked. And, in Paul’s case, it certainly helped in securing him admission to Yale, Haverford, Kenyon, Middlebury, Vassar, Williams, and Carleton College in Minnesota, where he is now entering his sophomore year. The Fiske guide is the #1 best-selling book on writing college essays. College counselors across the country were asked to submit noteworthy entries for consideration. Mains’ essay is a witty and introspective narrative documenting his experiences as a cashier at CVS. Director of College Counseling Kathleen Bracken commented, “Paul’s essay immediately evidenced the qualities of a stellar piece of writing, as so many of our seniors’ efforts do.” Visit DSnews.org to read Paul’s essay in its entirety!

C ONWAY, SA '42 MOURNED BY D OANE STUART COMMUNITY

F

lorence W. (Horne) Conway, 85, died peacefully on June 6, 2011 at her daughter's Delmar home with loving family present. Born July 20, 1925 in Albany, N.Y., Flossy was the youngest daughter of Margaret and Allen Horne. She graduated in 1942 from St. Agnes School where she made many, dear lifelong friends. After graduation she worked for the New York Telephone Company in Albany until her marriage to William T. Conway in 1945. She loved telling stories about growing up on Ramsey Place in Albany during the Depression and World War II. They were hard times, but she had many happy memories to share. Flossy was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who cherished her family, and who was actively involved in the lives of her five children. Flossy was delighted when her alma mater, St. Agnes, merged with Kenwood to form the Doane Stuart School, and she enthusiastically supported the new school during her service as president of the St. Agnes Alumnae association. Carpinello and Boies, Schiller & Flexner give the greatest of gifts, safeguarding the right to be the interfaith and truly independent school that we all value.

I

n February, 2010, George Carpinello (Lexi ‘08, Emerson College ’12) provided the School with the tools needed to defend itself from the legal action filed by the Society of the Sacred Heart, in St. Louis, claiming we owed them $1,250,000 in rent for the years since we left the Kenwood campus. Boies, Schiller & Flexner, LLP, took on the case on a pro bono bases, as a gift to the School, and has aggressively defended our position in court, to what would have otherwise amounted to hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees. Mr. Carpinello, and the firm of Boies, Schiller & Flexner, LLP, of which he is a partner, continue to do everything to preserve, protect and advance the mission of our School and the character of our special community. For his generosity and dedication to the School, Mr. Carpinello was honored at the 34th annual Gala and Auction as our leading trustee of the year. We are forever grateful to Mr. Carpinello and to Boies, for their commitment to safeguarding the values and principles for which our School stands.
