Can you imagine?

T

ry to imagine for a moment what Doane Stuart would be like without our inspiring Golub Interfaith Chapel, the spiritual and social center of our School, where we celebrate candlelit Christmas Chapels and solemn Yom Kippur remembrances, among other spiritually and communally uplifting events. Can you imagine? Doane Stuart without a chapel seems preposterous. However, this easily could have been our fate, but for a leap of faith. Our School community took that leap of faith together in 2009 when we purchased and renovated our new campus. We acquired the thing we needed most – a safe, permanent home for our children to grow spiritually, intellectually and in community. We took this risk knowing that this campus home would provide the canvas on which we could paint a brilliant future. Quickly our canvas became a wonderful work in progress. The twin, elegant Saint Agnes Drawing Room and Kenwood Parlor (replicating the parlors we left behind), graced the top floor, and our glorious Chapel, with its hand-tooled art deco detail, reinvigorated the traditions that guide us. Soon the Commons leapt to life, lit from above by skylights and from within by the renderings the children etch on the 1930s slate black boards, repurposed as its sustainable walls. A short time ago we had no home to call our own, no halls to fill with bustle, no classrooms to fill with inspiration. But now, we are home.

Now, can you imagine if we simply stopped here? We can’t, and so we ask you to join us as we continue to grow our collective ability to fulfill our mission, the mission that our visionary donors enabled, the mission our faculty bring to life each day. While we have a new campus, which would not have been possible without the support of our benefactors, we also have financial obligations we must meet, some stemming from the restorations required to outfit the campus, and some required to continue the growth and development of our School. As we plan for a future in which we can confidently imagine each fall brimming with new educational opportunities and each spring concluding with yet ever more brilliant images of the benefits of a Doane Stuart education, we need your help. We have a proud past and, with your help, we can secure a strong future. And we are grateful for all that everyone has done to support our School - we could not have accomplished all that we have in the past decade without our students, parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends - such as you. But it is now time to “finish the picture” for the sake of our students – the students of today, of tomorrow and of the generations that are to come. Contribute to the Campaign, and help us to take our next step together, into the brilliant picture of Doane Stuart’s future.

DOANE STUART LAUNCHES ROOFTOP SUSTAINABILITY PROJECT

O

n July 24, The Doane Stuart School began installation of over 100 solar panels on the flat roofs of the School’s Rensselaer campus.

The 25,920 Watt Net Metered, Grid-Tied Solar Electric System, installed by Monolith Solar Associates, LLC of East Greenbush, is estimated to produce 31,104 KWH of power, annually. By adding the solar panels, the School will see a significant reduction in energy costs, which will be redirected to support academic programs and to benefit faculty across all divisions of the School. In January 2012, Headmaster, Dr. Richard D. Enemark said of the project, “This is yet another step toward overall sustainability, and our dedication to the environment, with the added benefit of boosting funding to our curriculum, and to our outstanding teachers, in the process. It is truly a win-win.” As of the time of this release, each of the solar panels has been installed. Crews must now coordinate with electricians and with National Grid to connect the solar supply to the School’s power grid.

Green Roof and Solar Stats

In addition to the installation of the solar panels, in December 2011, Doane Stuart was awarded a $1,298,000 grant to create the Regions first and only “Green Roof.” The Grant is funded through a subgroup of The Environmental Facilities Corporation of the State of New York, The Green Innovation Grant Program. The School is currently in the planning stages for the “Green Roof.” Construction is anticipated to begin in the Spring of 2013. The roof of the 117,000 square foot campus building is an ideal location for this “Green Initiative”. The addition, which was built in 1995, provides an expansive canvas for students to design a space that will benefit generations of Doane Stuart students, and the wider community. The multi-use Green Roof will cover the entirety

of the 1995 addition, 22,200 square feet in total. The project will provide both an environmentally friendly space and rich opportunity for students to engage in sustainable design. Doane Stuart students will play a central role in the design phase of the new Green Roof, which will include grasses, science lab stations and unparalleled vistas across the Hudson River. Upper School students (grades 9 - 12), under the supervision and leadership of area landscape architects, including Doane Stuart alumni/ae, former teachers, and current parents, will participate in landscape architecture as an academic class, meeting on a weekly basis. The culmination of this class will be a final project, a collaborative design for the multi-use Green Roof landscape. Students will draw on the content of their course work throughout the year, integrating various requirements of its eventual function as a "living lab" in planning and designing the space. Headmaster, Dr. Richard Enemark said of the grant, “This is, of course, a great triumph for us, as the only school in the Capital Region to receive a grant at all. It is a boon to our science program, our ongoing sustainability efforts and our dedication to the environment.” The Green Roof at Doane Stuart will not only be an asset to our students and to our school, but to the larger community, facilitating the opportunity of educating the public on the myriad benefits of Green Roof technology. It is our fervent hope that with the installation of a multi-use Green Roof at Doane Stuart, the first of its kind to be constructed at a school in the Region, we will encourage other schools and non-profit organizations to follow our lead, helping to maintain a “green Renaissance” in the Capital Region. In doing so, we wish to continue to foster a culture of environmental awareness and sustainability. Doane Stuart’s Green Roof will be an icon in the Capital Region, attracting students, faculty, and professionals to the area, and to the School. By creating a truly landmark Green Roof, Doane Stuart, in partnership with New York State, will

elevate the standing of the Capital Region, making it ever more attractive to professionals and families, highlighting the vast intellectual and cultural capital we have to offer as a community. “The goal of the Green Innovation Grant Program is to find innovative projects that can manage rain where it falls, decreasing the volume of runoff at that location and reduce the need to handle storm water through traditional and more-costly infrastructure,” said Matthew Driscoll, President and CEO of the New York State Environmental Facilities Corp. which administers the Green Innovation Grant Program. “The Green Roof at Doane Stuart will provide the additional benefit of educating young people on the value and science of green projects. One day, Doane Stuart graduates may become the environmental scientists and engineers working to improve the environment through advancements in green technology.”

MORE CAMPUS NEWS Doane Stuart Receives nod from State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation

Doane Stuart Hosts Sustainable Capital Region Workshop Continuing Doane Stuart’s commitment to sustainability, on Tuesday, July 24, the School will host the second of three public workshops in the region for Sustainable Capital Region: A Cleaner, Greener Communities Program, as part of The Capital Region Sustainability Plan. The event is expected to attract a large group of interested executives and policy makers. The honor follows the $1,298,000 grant awarded to the School, in December 2011, to create the Regions first and only “Green Roof.” The Grant is funded through a subgroup of The Environmental Facilities Corporation of the State of New York, The Green Innovation Grant Program.

Following a detailed review by the State Review Board of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, and the Commission of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (SHPO), Doane Stuart’s 27-acre Rensselaer Campus has been approved for listing on the State Register of Historic Places. The School’s nomination for Historic Status has been forwarded to the National Register in Washington, D.C. If the Keeper of the National Register in Washington approves the nomination, Doane Stuart’s campus will be listed, also, on the National Register.

In addition to the construction of the “Green Roof,” the School will further its sustainability efforts this August by installing over 100 Solar panels on the remaining flat roofs of the campus. The Capital Region Sustainability Plan is part of the Cleaner, Greener Communities program, a major environmental initiative announced by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo last year. The Capital Region Sustainability Plan is a coalition effort of Capital Region municipalities and organizations, funded by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), to craft a smart growth plan for Albany, Columbia, Greene, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Warren and Washington Counties. This project is part of the Cleaner, Greener Communities program, a major environmental initiative announced by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo last year. The Capital Region Sustainability Plan will enable the area counties to more effectively align plan goals with the strategic planning efforts being done by the Capital Region's Regional Economic Development Council.

Golub Interfaith Chapel Doane Stuart is pleased to have been chosen by the Golub family to name its interfaith chapel. Our mission stresses education for students from every quarter, where the joy of discovery is valued, while emphasizing serious study, social responsibility, and the foundation for a strong faith. The Golub family has been impressed by the ways in which Doane Stuart encourages the exploration of ideas and the growth of self awareness through building understanding, tolerance and respect for the beliefs of others. Because of this, the Golub Family has chosen to honor Doane Stuart. The entire Doane Stuart community is grateful for the dedicated and continuing support of the Golubs (Neil, Jane, Mona and Ira ’15). We are honored to have the Golub name grace our magnificent Interfaith Chapel and will remember and think of each of them – whether gathering for All-School Morning Meeting, drama rehearsals, worship, organ or piano recitals, or simply taking a moment for quiet reflection - every time we enter our Chapel.
