KEYNOTE SPEAKER: SIMONA A. BLACK, DNP, MSN, ACNS-BC Dr. Simona A. Black is a Colonel in the United States (U.S.) Army Nurse Corps and has over 26 years of extensive clinical, leadership, and policy development experience. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama. She later earned her Master of Science degree in Adult Health Nursing from the University of Texas at Austin. In 2018, she earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in Nursing Administration from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Black is a board-certified Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) as well. Dr. Black’s experiences include serving as a Nurse Manager at the Family Practice Clinic in Baumholder, Germany; the Surgical Intensive Care Unit during Operation Iraqi Freedom in Bagdad, Iraq; the Intensive Care Unit at the Combat Support Hospital in the Republic of Korea; the Wounded Warrior (Neuro-Surgical) Unit at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C; and the Surgical Unit at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Furthermore, Dr. Black’s experiences also encompass serving as the Senior Clinical Policy Officer with the Office of the Army Surgeon General in Falls Church, Virginia; Executive Officer to the Chief of the Army Nurse Corps in Falls Church, Virginia; the Director of Nursing, Medical-Surgical Department, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland; the Assistant and Chief Nursing Officer at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital in Fort Belvoir, Virginia; and as the Command Inspector General, Regional Health CommandAtlantic in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. More importantly, Dr. Black’s military service provided her first-hand experience to apply her skills and knowledge in foreign countries to include Germany and Korea. Likewise, Dr. Black’s assignment to Iraq provided her the unique opportunity to care for the critically ill and injured Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and local nationals during combat. Dr. Black’s passion for to serve also extends to her community. She continues her commitment to service as a volunteer on the local and national level with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated; Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated; and the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America where she has also held several leadership positions. Dr. Black is an active member in her professional organizations as well to include the Virginia Nurses Association, and Sigma Theta Tau, Incorporated. Dr. Black has received numerous awards during her career and has been recognized for her leadership and community service. Dr. Black’s awards include: the Order of Military Medical Merit (O2M3), the Legion of Merit (LOM) award, and numerous other military awards. Most of all, Dr. Black’s greatest accomplishment is as a wife and mother. She is married to Michael Black, Esq. of Compton, California for 23 years and they three children Christen (22), Rachel (21), and Sydney (11).

ABOUT DNPS OF COLOR DNPs of Color (DOCs), is a 501c3 Nonprofit Nursing organization, whose mission is to increase diversity in doctoral studies, clinical practice, and leadership for nurses. DNP, short for Doctor of Nursing Practice, is the highest level of education a nurse can attain which focuses on clinical practice. DNPs influence healthcare outcomes through healthcare policy, organizational leadership, and translating nursing research into evidencedbased practice.
MISSION To serve DNPs of Color through networking, mentorship and advocacy to increase diversity in doctoral studies, clinical practice and leadership.
VISION To inspire, empower and transform the landscape of nursing by increasing diversity in the doctor of nursing practice degree.
